California learns the marijuana industry is far from dope

It turns out the legal marijuana business in the Golden State is not golden at all.

For all of the promises that legalizing marijuana would create a boon for tax revenue and allow a previously underground industry to flourish as a legitimate business, California marijuana vendors have faced so many problems that they are now shifting to selling hemp, a legal form of marijuana that has much lower THC than conventional marijuana.

The main problem for California’s dope sellers is that there is simply not enough demand for recreational marijuana. This is, of course, a shocking development for marijuana vendors who were utterly convinced that everyone and their mother wants to smell like a skunk and inhibit their mental faculties.

The vendors, who entered the market about six years ago, believed the industry would only grow exponentially over time. But as it turns out, the market for legal marijuana users is finite, and the regulated market must compete for a number of morally flexible customers who are still perfectly content with buying from unsanctioned dealers.

Luckily for these entrepreneurs, there is a solution: hemp. Unlike regular marijuana, hemp, which comes from a different part of the marijuana plant, is legal on the federal level, largely unregulated, and is easily sold to the masses, including in many beauty products and skincare creams.

One marijuana vendor told the California outlet SFGate that the shift in product emphasis provides the ability to sell online and in 30 states, something that cannot be done with regular marijuana. And the best part is vendors can pass off hemp as practically the same thing as regular marijuana without paying the same vendor costs to the state, all the while ensuring that their old customers won’t go elsewhere.

California, much like other states that have legalized marijana, is learning that the industry is not so lucrative for the state as it seemed. Instead, all the legalized industry did was offer short-lived profit while making public spaces smell bad.

California Democrats say they’ve waited a lifetime to watch Harris nominated at DNC

Deborah Cunningham-Skurnik has been to Democratic National Conventions in the past, but this year just feels different.

“I’ve been waiting for this,” the California Democratic Party regional director told the Washington Examiner. “[The party] is on target with their messaging, and it’s really resonating well with Democrats. No party preference and even moderates seem to be very eager to volunteer and donate.”

Cunningham-Skurnik, a DNC elected board member, is among nearly 500 Californians headed to Chicago to celebrate the nominations of Vice President Kamala Harris for president and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) for vice president.

In all, more than 4,000 credentialed delegates will be in the city Monday through Thursday for nightly televised celebrations with speeches to fire up the base.

“This is my third convention,” Cunningham-Skurnik said. “I was a Clinton delegate in 1992, President Obama in 2012, but this one is going to be even more historic in so many different ways. I’ve been a feminist my entire adult life. My degree is in history with a specialization in women’s studies from UCLA. This has been my dream, to get a woman president.”

Cunningham-Skurnik said President Joe Biden’s late decision to step aside and endorse Harris as his replacement has given Democrats a real shot at stopping former President Donald Trump from returning to the White House.

Harris secured the Democratic presidential nomination earlier this month, culminating a long career and dramatic rise to become the nation’s first black woman selected as a major party’s nominee. Her nomination also capped one of the most tumultuous months in political history, which not only included Biden withdrawing from the race but also an assassination attempt against Trump.

Harris, born in California to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, has quickly energized voters across the country and raised more than $300 million in a month. She and Walz have hosted rallies with crowds topping 10,000.

“She is bringing so much sunshine to the Democratic Party and not just in California,” Cunningham-Skurnik said. “Look at Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Nevada. The amount of people who showed up … spontaneous and organic. Her crowds will start chanting things and it’s like, ‘Woah!’ These are all things I have wanted our party to do for a very long time.”

Former Sonoma County Mayor Sandra Lowe agrees.

Lowe, who will also be making the five-night, $3,000 trip from the West Coast to Chicago, told the Washington Examiner that some of her friends are wishing they had signed up in advance.

“A lot of people who didn’t try to become a delegate are disappointed now because they would have loved to have been there,” she said. “A little (fear of missing out) going on there. A lot of people thought, been there, done that, went there last time. It’s a beautiful month here in California … I don’t think I’ll do that this year. And then all of a sudden it’s like, ‘What? California? I want to go!’”

In addition to a nightly parade of speakers, performers, and party enthusiasts, the DNC will also adopt and unify a comprehensive party platform, taking formal stances on issues such as reproductive rights, immigration, and economic policy. There will be caucus breakfasts, councils, and meetings where delegates will discuss everything from poverty to military needs.

Giovanni Chavez, the president of California Young Democrats, will also be front and center at the convention.

California Young Democrats is the official youth arm of the party made up of Democrats 13-35 committed to “activating the youth vote, empowering Young Democrats in their community, electing Democrats to office, and building a generation of progressive leadership.”

Chavez, a labor union lawyer, told the Washington Examiner that the group is seeinga huge resurgence of energy and excitement now that Kamala Harris is at the top of the ticket.”

“Young Democrats will be working hard to get Harris elected,” he said. “We plan on walking doors up and down the ballot in California and in some of our neighboring states. We also plan on hosting a small-donor fundraiser for the Harris campaign. The stakes have never been this high, and now we have momentum on our side.”

In addition to official events, some Californians, such as Skyler Sikes, are expecting to go off-campus for events in downtown Chicago. Sikes, who will be visiting her aunt in nearby Evanston, Illinois, told the Washington Examiner she wants to attend “DemPalooza,” an open-to-the-public event at the McCormick Place convention center.

The dangerous Kamala Harris price control farce thumbnail

The dangerous Kamala Harris price control farce

Despite groveling coverage of Vice President Kamala Harris by the liberal press, she still needs to solve an intricate puzzle: how to distance herself from President Joe Biden’s failed and unpopular economic record, all of which she supported, while at the same time not actually changing any underlying policy.

So far, she has stalled for time and still has not given a substantive interview or press conference since she helped push Biden out of the race. Even the most supplicant press corps in a generation is getting impatient with Harris’s refusal to answer even the most basic questions about public policy.

Enter Harris’s major speech on economic issues this Friday in North Carolina, where she will reportedly combat the Biden-Harris weakness on inflation by blaming “corporate greed” and promising to direct the Federal Trade Commission to set new price controls on “food and groceries” to fight “excessive corporate profits.”

The details of how Harris will set food prices and determine which corporate profits are “excessive” and which are not, are, according to the most friendly press outlets, “not immediately clear” and “light on detail.”

Don’t expect any more clarity in Harris’s Friday speech.

Blaming corporate greed for inflation is as old as the hills, but unlike those hills, it is not based on solid ground. Biden has been trying the same argument for years now. His most recent State of the Union speech focussed on corporate “price gouging” and “shrinkflation.” With Biden as the salesman, most voters weren’t buying. But with Harris at the top of the ticket, Democrats hope voters will take a second look.

Democrats have plenty of polling to show voters may buy the story. The left-wing think tank Data for Progress, founded by Sean McElwee of Abolish ICE fame, has been pushing polling data showing that 75% of voters support “the federal government fining companies that raise prices past the rate of inflation.” Blueprint, a polling firm created for the sole purpose of helping Democrats win in 2024, shows that while voters believe government spending is the top contributor to high inflation, “corporate greed” came in second.

If you talk to any economist, even Democratic ones, they will tell you this is all ignorant nonsense. It’s not as though corporations can raise prices willy-nilly in a competitive market without losing sales, nor did corporations suddenly get greedy after Donald Trump left office. And as bad as the “corporate greed” diagnosis is, Harris’s price control solution is even worse. Price controls lead to lower production and even higher prices on the black market.

In all likelihood, Harris will never implement the price controls she is threatening now. It is a purely political talking point that polls well and can be cast aside as soon as the election is over. Like Harris, it is almost entirely fake.

But just as Biden has abused the Department of Education to create illegal student loan amnesties, Harris could abuse the FTC to implement price controls.

We have seen a similar farce play out in California. Democratic policies have been jacking up the price of gas in the Golden State for years. Instead of admitting their own policies are causing the high prices, California Democrats have instituted policies to punish oil companies for gouging. The end result is fewer oil companies active in the state and even higher prices.

It is the same playbook we’ve seen in socialist countries across Latin America: Flood the economy with spending, trigger inflation, and then promise to crack down on “corporate greed.” The next stop is government ownership of oil production, which is something California Democrats are actually considering.

The reality is there is no difference between Harris and Biden on economic issues. If anything, Harris would have spent even more money than Biden. She is a fraud. But to the extent that she is different, she is more authoritarian and left-wing than he is. Which is saying something! Something not good.

CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER   It is the same playbook we’ve seen in socialist countries across Latin America: Flood the economy with spending, trigger inflation, and then promise to crack down on “corporate greed.” The next stop is government ownership of oil production, which is something California Democrats are actually considering.  The reality is there is no difference between Harris and Biden on economic issues. If anything, Harris would have spent even more money than Biden. She is a fraud. But to the extent that she is different, she is more authoritarian and left-wing than he is. Which is saying something!
