Kamala Harris honeymoon polling gives her a boost in every swing state

Vice President Kamala Harris received a honeymoon polling boost, giving her higher shares in every swing state.

By early July, former President Donald Trump had a major lead over President Joe Biden in every swing state, sending panic throughout the Democratic ranks. This panic led to pressure that forced Biden out of the race, replacing him with Harris. Following a week of positive press coverage, Harris experienced a honeymoon bump in the polls, closing or even surpassing Trump’s lead in several swing states, according to a recent Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll.

The new poll, taken from July 24 through 28, found Harris was leading in Arizona by two points; in Nevada by two points; in Wisconsin by two points, and in Michigan by 11 points. Trump was up by four points in Pennsylvania and two points in North Carolina, and the two were tied in Georgia.

The poll surveyed 4,973 registered voters in seven swing states, with differing sample sizes in each, including 804 in Arizona, 799 in Georgia, 706 in Michigan, 454 in Nevada, 706 in North Carolina, 804 in Pennsylvania, and 700 in Wisconsin.

Some Republican figures, including pollster Richard Baris and GOP strategist Ryan Girdusky, criticized the poll results.

“It’s bad methodology. Small samples. Wild swings and wide margins between similar states aren’t real,” Baris argued.

Nevertheless, the poll reflects the improving chances of Harris following the official launch of her campaign. While still trailing Trump in most polls, she has largely closed the significant gap that had formed after Biden’s shaky debate performance on June 27.

Harris tries to goad Trump into a debate: ‘Say it to my face’

Vice President Kamala Harris Tuesday taunted former President Donald Trump for failing to lock in a debate against her during a star-powered rally in Atlanta.

“The momentum in this race is shifting and there are signs that Donald Trump is feeling it,” Harris told the 10,000-person crowd crammed into Georgia State University’s Convocation Center. “You may have seen he pulled out of the debate in September he had previously agreed to.”

“He won’t debate, but he and his running mate sure seem to have a lot to say about me,” she said. “Well Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage because as the saying goes, if you’ve got something to say, say it to my face.”

Harris also went on offense as Trump and Republicans politically attack her for being President Joe Biden‘s “border czar,” promising to sign the bipartisan border and national security bill that was negotiated by the Senate earlier this year. The White House and campaign remain adamant she is responsible for addressing the root causes of migration and is not Biden’s “border czar.”

“In this campaign, I will proudly put my record against his any day of the week — any day of the week, including, for example, on the issue of immigration,” Harris said.

“I was the attorney general of a border state,” she added. “Donald Trump, on the other hand, has been talking a big game about securing our border, but he does not walk the walk.”

Despite the bravado, Harris underscored former President Barack Obama‘s message in his endorsement of her last week, that she is an underdog before November’s election.

“Let’s level set,” she said. “We have a fight in front of us.”

Harris was introduced by Atlanta-born rapper and singer Quavo, with a special performance by fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

“I know my ladies in the crowd love their bodies,” Megan Thee Stallion said before she started performing her new song, “Body.” “If you want to keep loving your body, you know who to vote for.”

Although the vibe of Harris’s rally was in stark contrast to any of its Biden counterparts, her message was remarkably similar to that of the man she replaced on the 2024 Democratic ticket last week and is hoping to replace in the White House next year, including encouraging people to sit down before she started speaking.

“By many indicators our economy is the strongest in the world. But while inflation is down and wages are up, prices are still too high,” she said. “You know it and I know it … on day one I will take on price gouging and bring down costs.”

One difference included her discouraging people from chanting, “Lock him up,” something Biden did not do in Michigan earlier this month nor Harris in Wisconsin last week.

Earlier, Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock (D-GA), in addition to 2022 Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams, helped to warm up the audience.

“Don’t know if you all heard about it, but apparently Donald Trump is too scared to debate Vice President Harris,” Ossoff said. “The candidate dodging debates is the candidate losing.”

It was Biden’s disastrous debate against Trump on June 27 that drew widespread concern about his mental acuity and kicked off the pressure campaign among Democrats that culminated with Biden bowing out of the race on July 21.

“Some days I feel sorry for Republicans because they’ve got to figure out how to run a criminal against a prosecutor,” Warnock added. “Kamala Harris is getting ready to prosecute the case. The American people are the jury and we’re going to get the verdict right.”

The short, strange life of ‘weird’ thumbnail

The short, strange life of ‘weird’

THE SHORT, STRANGE LIFE OF “WEIRD.” For a brief moment, every Democratic talker in the United States was calling former President Donald Trump and running mate Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) “weird.” They’re still doing it now, but in the last 24 hours or so, the vogue of “weird” appears to be dwindling. And that leaves the question: What was that about?

Several press accounts suggest it got started last week when Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), who just happens to be on presumptive nominee Vice President Kamala Harris’s short list for running mate, “called Trump and Vance ‘just weird’ in an MSNBC interview, which the Democratic Governors Association, of which Walz is chair, amplified in a post on X,” according to ABC News

Then the Harris campaign, just days in existence, began calling Trump and Vance “weird” on every occasion it could. Last Friday, the campaign sent out a press release headlined “JD Vance Is a Creep (Who Wants to Ban Abortion Nationwide).” The first sentence of the release: “JD Vance is weird.”

Subscribe today to the Washington Examiner magazine that will keep you up to date with what’s going on in Washington. SUBSCRIBE NOW: Just $1.00 an issue!

By the weekend, shows on MSNBC and CNN were talking about it, giving Walz credit. The head of the Democratic National Committee predicted victory in November in part because its Republican opponents are “weirdos.” Later, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), who pulled herself out of the vice presidential pool, claimed the “weird” talking point was breaking through because of the Republican agenda and “the way they address people, it is bizarre. It’s weird. It is weird. … And weird is a kind of a funny phrase to use because it’s bizarre.”

By then, it seemed that every Democratic official and every Democratic ally in the press was calling the Trump-Vance ticket “weird.” Look at this collection of clips to see one after the other after the other after the other.

Does it work? Who knows? The Democrats speaking in unison obviously believe it does. But here’s one very odd thing about it: President Joe Biden, who was the 2024 Democratic candidate until he was deposed by a group of party insiders, based his campaign on the threat he claimed former President Donald Trump posed to democracy. Say what you will about it — and it was basically malarkey, as the president might say — it was serious malarkey. It was a big, deeply solemn accusation.

And now? Oooh, they’re weird. As a whole, on cue, the Democratic Party changed the focus of the campaign from saving democracy to saying the other side has cooties. That was an extraordinary decision, to say the least.

A few days ago, Politico suggested that Democrats may have de-emphasized democracy in favor of “weird” because democracy just wasn’t selling. Biden, Politico reported, “believed deeply in making the issue of democracy a central theme of the campaign. But the president’s remarks on the subject often featured a grave tone and a heaviness that, more than three years after the January 6, 2021 insurrection, the country had seemingly tuned out. Polls showed voters rated Biden and Trump roughly evenly on questions of which candidate would be better to protect democracy.”

That is a big, serious question. With Biden’s charge in mind, voters could see the sitting president advocate removing Supreme Court justices because he did not like their decisions; they could see his Justice Department indicting his opponent not once but twice; they could see Biden’s supporters trying to remove Trump from presidential ballots — they could see all of that and reasonably wonder which candidate would better protect democracy. No wonder people got a little tired of things. So the Harris team thought it might be better to just dump the big, serious Biden campaign theme in favor of … “weird.”

There are those who argue that “weird” itself is a serious message. The Atlantic’s David Frum suggested that it was a shrewd campaign appeal directed at millions of women, who will get the anti-Trump, pro-Harris message even if Trump supporters don’t. “‘Weird’ is code for ‘expresses obsessive hostility to women, including the women in his own personal life,’” Frum wrote, “and because MAGA Republicans don’t get the code, they don’t understand why they are losing the argument.”

Maybe. A huge gender gap has characterized this entire campaign, with Trump having a big lead among men and Biden having a big lead among women. Through the ouster of Biden, Trump’s lead was a bit bigger than Biden’s, meaning Trump led in polls both nationwide and in key swing states. Maybe “weird” will be the magic word that turns any women who do not already support Trump against the former president. Or maybe not.

In any event, now, although it’s never a good idea to speak too soon, it appears the “weird” wave might have crested. Some Trump supporters started posting images of the Biden administration’s celebration of transgenderism, men dressed in women’s clothing reveling on the White House lawn, alongside photos of Vance and his family with the caption “JD Vance is weird.” That led to other sorts of pushback on the “weird” theme. And then the Harris campaign released its first big ad, and it was an entirely conventional case for her candidacy — no “weird,” no memes, just a straight old-fashioned campaign commercial. And now “weird” doesn’t seem to be popping up every second on some media outlets and in social media. So maybe we are approaching the point where it all seems overdone. And then, voters can hope, the campaign can move on to being a campaign.

And then, voters can hope, the campaign can move on to being a campaign.

, THE SHORT, STRANGE LIFE OF “WEIRD.” For a brief moment, every Democratic talker in the United States was calling former President Donald Trump and running mate Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) “weird.” They’re still doing it now, but in the last 24 hours or so, the vogue of “weird” appears to be dwindling. And that leaves the question: What was that about? Several press accounts suggest it got started last week when Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), who just happens to be on presumptive nominee Vice President Kamala Harris’s short list for running mate, “called Trump and Vance ‘just weird’ in an MSNBC interview, which the Democratic Governors Association, of which Walz is chair, amplified in a post on X,” according to ABC News.  Then the Harris campaign, just days in existence, began calling Trump and Vance “weird” on every occasion it could. Last Friday, the campaign sent out a press release headlined “JD Vance Is a Creep (Who Wants to Ban Abortion Nationwide).” The first sentence of the release: “JD Vance is weird.” Subscribe today to the Washington Examiner magazine that will keep you up to date with what’s going on in Washington. … And weird is a kind of a funny phrase to use because it’s bizarre.” By then, it seemed that every Democratic official and every Democratic ally in the press was calling the Trump-Vance ticket “weird.” Look at this collection of clips to see one after the other after the other after the other. GOP senators call for more Secret Service whistleblowers after assassination attempt

Senate Republicans urged Secret Service agents Tuesday to become whistleblowers and report their concerns about the agency to Congress after some had already anonymously come forward with information about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Sens. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) indicated that whistleblowers have been able to fill in key details since the shooting on July 13, which left one dead, two seriously injured, and Trump with a minor injury.

“We need more whistleblowers,” Johnson said. “We need people inside the agencies who are willing to talk to us, tell the American people what’s really happening.”

Johnson’s remarks came during a press conference the lawmakers held right after a Senate hearing on the shooting, where acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe and FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate both testified.

Blackburn applauded whistleblowers who had already come forward, pointing to a report in RealClearPolitics of an internal email allegedly written by a Secret Service whistleblower decrying the bureau’s perceived culture of “CYA,” an acronym for “cover your a**.”

At the hearing, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) confronted Rowe about a whistleblower report he received indicating that the Secret Service was offered the option to use drone technology at the Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the shooting occurred, but an agent repeatedly rejected the offer.

“There was an offer to fly a drone on that day,” Rowe said. “We probably should have taken them up on it.”

Rowe was put in the hot seat after his predecessor, former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, resigned following her inability to answer numerous questions at a similar hearing about the stunning security failures that led to the assassination attempt. The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to access a nearby rooftop and fire eight shots into the rally crowd.

Several senators at the hearing zeroed in on communication failures between the Secret Service and local law enforcement at the rally, but Cruz grilled Rowe on reports that the Secret Service had at times denied additional security requests from Trump since he left office.

Rowe said Trump was provided all the security assets his team requested for the rally, but he indicated that there were times in the past couple of years when this was not the case.

Cruz said he believed Secret Service leadership “made a political decision to deny these requests.”

“Secret Service agents are not political,” Rowe replied.

Later at the press conference, Cruz commended Rowe for doing “marginally better” than Cheatle but was still unconvinced that politics were not a factor in the Secret Service. Cruz reiterated the plea for more whistleblowers, saying they could shed light on the matter.

“I want to underscore the call that has come from multiple senators for whistleblowers,” Cruz said. “I believe the rational inference from the evidence we know now is it was political bias at the top, at the leadership of the Secret Service, that led to insufficient agents and insufficient resources being devoted to protecting President Trump.”

Venezuelan military high command throws support behind Maduro as loyalty of military brought into question

The leaders of the Venezuelan military reaffirmed their support for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro amid a contested election that has split the country’s military.

The Venezuelan election results had Maduro winning, results Democratic Unitary Platform candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia denounced as fraudulent, claiming victory as well. Mass protests broke out in the aftermath, leading to violence. The clashes with police have brought into question the loyalties of the military, with some videos published on social media showing military units sympathizing with or even defecting to protesters.

On Tuesday, the military high command reaffirmed its loyalty to Maduro, putting the military establishment firmly behind the incumbent president.

“We reaffirm the most absolute loyalty and unconditional support to Nicolas Maduro Moros, Constitutional President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Our Commander in Chief, legitimately reelected by the People’s Power,” Defense Minister General Vladimir Padrino Lopez said in an address.

Lopez said there was a coup attempt against Maduro and that the military would move to “defeat” it.

“There is a coup in progress, so President Nicolás Maduro has stepped up to stop it again and with him the people who elected him president, all the institutions, the Bolivarian armed forces, and the democratic institutions,” he continued.

At the same time, videos emerged on social media showing soldiers interacting in a friendly manner with protesters, contrary to orders.

“If you can’t maintain order and peace, then I will have to take action myself to defend them,” a soldier told a group of protesters.

“With all due respect to the soldiers, the idea is not for the military to fight against its own people,” one of the protesters responded.

“If you respect us, we’ll respect you,” the soldier said.

Two separate videos appeared to show riot police mingling with protesters to cheers.

US announces $500 million in funding for Philippines over China threat

The United States announced $500 million in military funding for the Philippines on Tuesday to modernize the country’s armed forces in what Secretary of State Antony Blinken called a “once-in-a-generation investment.”

Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with their Filipino counterparts, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo and Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro Jr., in Manila on Tuesday, where they announced new updates to the alliance. They also met with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

During the meeting, the U.S. committed to allocating $500 million in foreign military financing from the fiscal 2024 Indo-Pacific security supplemental to establish a Roles, Missions, Capabilities Working Group and implement the Philippines-Security Sector Assistance Roadmap, which outlines the jointly determined priority capability requirements of the Philippines Armed Forces, among other things.

“This level of funding is unprecedented, and it sends a clear message of support for the Philippines from the Biden-Harris administration, the U.S. Congress, and the American people,” Austin said.

Blinken added, “Both of us share concerns — and many other countries in the region share concerns as well — about some of the actions that the People’s Republic of China has taken, escalatory actions in the South China Sea, the East China Sea, and elsewhere.”

Both U.S. secretaries were in Japan earlier in the week, where they met with Defense Minister Minoru Kihara and Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa in Tokyo on Sunday. Austin and Kihara met with the South Korean defense minister for a trilateral ministerial meeting, which was held for the first time in Japan.

Austin described this new pact of U.S. allies in the Pacific region as a “new convergence” of “likeminded allies and partners.”

Ahead of the trip, the defense secretary told reporters, “Our ties with Australia and India are stronger than ever. We’ve improved our relationships with Vietnam, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, and many more.”

The Pentagon considers the Chinese Communist Party the biggest threat to the international rules-based order and has characterized them as the U.S.’s “pacing threat.” In the last several years, China’s military has frequently clashed with the Philippines and other Pacific countries regarding Beijing’s claims of sovereignty around the region.

Vance attacks ‘dangerously liberal’ Harris while touting his own family roots

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), former President Donald Trump‘s 2024 running mate, heartily attacked Vice President Kamala Harris in battleground Nevada on Tuesday.

Vance has hit the campaign trail hard since being selected as Trump’s running mate during the Republican National Convention earlier in July, but his claims that “crazy cat ladies” in the Democratic Party are propping up Harris’s White House bid drew sharp condemnation last week.

On Tuesday, at the first of two Nevada rallies, Vance instead opted to go after Harris’s “dangerously liberal” track record, including past statements from her short-lived 2020 presidential campaign, and instead contrast them with his humble upbringing in rural Ohio.

“Kamala Harris has broken, I think, that foundational promise that if you work hard and play by the rules, you ought to be able to live a good life in this country now. That’s why so many Americans no longer believe that their children will be better off than they are, and I hate to say it, if we elect Kamala Harris, they’re going to be right,” he declared Tuesday.

Vance specifically recounted his childhood and being raised by his grandmother Bonnie Blanton Vance, whom he affectionately referred to as “Mamaw.”

“I grew up in a family where things were often tight and tough, but I made it because, first of all, this is a great country that provides opportunities to its citizens, and we are grateful for it. Now, I also made it, of course, because I was raised by a tough old bird I called Mamaw,” he continued. “I’m so grateful for all the strong women out there, especially the strong grandmas and the strong moms.”

Vance got off to a rocky start as Trump’s top surrogate, but reports and Republican insiders indicate there are no plans for the Republican vice presidential nominee to pull any punches.

However, Vance’s Tuesday afternoon rally was mocked by the Harris campaign after a “Vance” signage emblazoning the front of his podium slipped off its hold in the middle of his remarks.

“Status of the Trump-Vance campaign right now,” the Harris campaign tweeted alongside a video of the incident.

More campus DEI offices shut down in Alabama, Missouri, and Iowa ahead of fall semester thumbnail

More campus DEI offices shut down in Alabama, Missouri, and Iowa ahead of fall semester

Diversity, equity, and inclusion offices at universities in Alabama, Missouri, and Iowa are shutting down ahead of the fall semester as more schools respond to laws barring the ideology.

Auburn University announced Monday evening that it would be dissolving its DEI office by Aug. 15, following an announcement last week that the entire University of Alabama system would close DEI offices at its three schools as well.

The moves from the Alabama schools come after Gov. Kay Ivey (R-AL) signed a bill in March that outlawed school events and programs that require certain racial or sexual check marks in order to participate. The bill also bars racial or sexual discrimination through favoritism and teaching that “meritocracy or traits such as hard work ethic are racist or sexist.” All public schools in the state are required to comply by Oct. 1.

While Auburn has not yet announced future plans for offices with similar goals as a DEI office, the University of Alabama system did, simply moving DEI chief Dr. Christine Taylor, whose title was vice president and associate provost for diversity, equity and inclusion, to helm the newly formed Division of Opportunities, Connections and Success.

Schools across the country facing legislative DEI bans have made similar moves, simply moving employees and renaming offices that will ultimately continue to inject DEI ideology into the operation of the university.

The University of Missouri announced Tuesday that it would also be shutting down its DEI division, coming after the school’s DEI Vice Chancellor Maurice Gipson announced he would be departing the school in August.

Mizzou President Mun Choi held a press conference Tuesday announcing a reorganization of the office. In a written statement, Choi said, “In the Missouri Legislature, 13 pieces of DEI legislation were introduced during the past two years. … Our proactive responses played a role in averting the passage of these bills. These responses included the elimination of diversity hiring statements; the ending of race-conscious admissions and scholarships; and ensuring that inclusion means inclusion for all.”

Last week, thanking Gipson for his service, Choi said the two would be speaking about how to keep DEI alive at the school, while responding to political pressure to get rid of the ideology. Choi said no employees will lose their job.

Last week, Iowa State University closed its DEI offices following recommendations from the Board of Regents and state lawmakers, cutting five positions total, though three were already vacant.

The closure followed directives from the board to eliminate DEI offices and restructure them. The directives were passed in the state legislature as well, which added punishments for violations. The law barred DEI offices, DEI-specific employees, and DEI spending, except when the spending is required for accreditation or by law.

Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua gives ‘green light’ to members to attack cops: officials

The Venezuelan street gang Tren de Aragua is believed to have given what authorities are calling the “green light” to attack and kill police officers, federal authorities have warned.

A bulletin by the Colorado Information Analysis Center, a screenshot of which was shared with Fox News Digital, warns that a police department in New Mexico have received information from federal partners that members have been encouraged to attack police officers in Denver.

“The Albuquerque New Mexico Police Department (APD) has released this officer safety bulletin to notify law enforcement of information regarding the Tren De Aragua criminal organization and reports that TDA members in Denver have been given a “green light” to fire on or attack law enforcement,” it says.

BORDER STATE LAWMAKER SOUNDS ALARM ON BLOODTHIRSTY VENEZUELAN GANG ENTERING US: ‘THEY HAVE NO RULES’

The information was first reported by The New York Post, which cites a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) memo in Chicago providing similar information citing also “credible human sources from Colorado” and warning that “we have a TdA presence here in Chicago.” NewsNation reported that an officer safety/situation awareness bulletin had gone out to Border Patrol agents reporting similar information.

Denver Police Department told Fox News Digital that it was aware of the warning.

“As with any information about possible criminal activity that may impact other jurisdictions, details are shared across agencies. DPD is monitoring and making officers aware of the safety concerns shared by our law enforcement partners,” the statement said.

APD said it couldn’t confirm any information in media reports, and said that disclosure of internal police bulletins “could put investigations and/or officers at risk.”

HSI did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.

The notification is the latest warning in regards to the Venezuelan street gang, some members of which have come across the southern border.

“Keep your eye on this gang,” Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens warned in May. “Their criminal activities represent a serious threat to our communities!”

Customs and Border Protections (CBP) has previously distributed intelligence bulletins to agents revealing the tattoos and identifiers for the gang.

TdA is said to specialize in extortion, kidnapping, murder and sex trafficking. Federal authorities have been warning that the gang is trying to establish itself in the U.S., where police are already linking it to organized crime. The FBI has also warned that the gang could team up with the bloodthirsty MS-13.

The gang drew additional attention when it emerged that the brother of the suspect in the killing of Georgia student Laken Riley had ties to the gang. Both are Venezuelan illegal immigrants. Recently the Treasury designated Tren de Aragua a significant transnational criminal organization and offered financial rewards for the conviction of three of its leaders.

John Fabbricatore, a former ICE field office director who is now running for a congressional seat in Colorado as a Republican, told Fox News Digital that the gang has got a foothold in the state and is taking over apartment buildings. He said that the gang has taken advantage of the ongoing border crisis.

“This whole border situation over the last three and a half years has allowed countless criminals to be allowed into the United States, and we’re seeing an uptick in crime, especially in illegal immigrant crime throughout the US, and sanctuary cities are just magnetizing it,” he said.

He also joined others in warning about the gang, saying they are involved in drug trafficking, large-scale operations and other crimes.

“For United States citizens, for people here within the United States, they are a dangerous gang. And with them just putting out a green light on police officers here in the United States, we could potentially see police officers being shot at by these gang members because they do not fear the law enforcement in the United States,” he said.
