CBS Evening News’s Norah O’Donnell to step away from anchor desk

CBS Evening News’s Norah O’Donnell announced she will soon leave her role as anchor and managing editor of the nightly news program.

In a memo shared with staff on Tuesday, O’Donnell said it was “time to do something different” and that she would transition to the role of a network correspondent after the 2024 election.

O’Donnell has spent the last five years as the CBS Evening News anchor. Before that, she co-hosted the network’s morning news show.

“I have spent 12 years in the anchor chair here at CBS News, connected to a daily broadcast and the rigors of a relentless news cycle. It’s time to do something different. This presidential election will be my seventh as a journalist, and for many of us in this business we tend to look at our careers in terms of these milestone events,” O’Donnell said.

Effort to ‘wash Harris clean’ of Biden administration mistakes is tall order: Sarah Bedford thumbnail

Effort to ‘wash Harris clean’ of Biden administration mistakes is tall order: Sarah Bedford

The Washington Examiner’s Sarah Bedford said the time left until Election Day leaves Vice President Kamala Harris little time to reassure voters that she is “the steady hand that can fix everything.”

While appearing on Fox News’s The Evening Edit, Bedford noted the significance of Harris’s choice of a running mate in that effort. Bedford pointed out that Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), who is being floated as a contender for the role, may be more about winning the state of Arizona and less about policy and balancing the ticket.

“I think that Kamala Harris, you know, she doesn’t have a lot of room for error with so little runway left in the election, so why she would choose someone who evokes some of the Biden administration’s worst moments and calls attention to the fact that the Biden administration is perceived as being so weak on national security, that foreign policy has become a mess on Biden and Harris’s watch, why she would choose a candidate who reinforces some of those worst narratives about the Biden administration doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense,” Bedford said.

“Not a lot about what the Democrats have been doing lately makes a lot of sense, unless you look at it through the lens of them just wanting to win elections,” she added. “Arizona is a key state. Mark Kelly is from the key state, and that seems to be some of the only calculations going into the VP search: who helps Kamala win, not necessarily who is the best governing partner.”

Bedford contended that the entirety of Harris’s campaign, including who she chooses to be her vice president, will have to battle “the mistakes of the Biden administration.”

“They’re going to do everything possible to wash Harris clean of the mistakes of the Biden administration, and it’s true that elections are not won and lost on foreign policy, but the mess that we’ve seen on the world stage on Biden and Harris’s watch, I think, underscores that deeper perception that the people in charge right now don’t know what they’re doing — on any front, on the economy, on the border, and on foreign policy,” Bedford said.

“I think on that front, Harris is going to have a hard time reassuring people that she is the steady hand that can fix everything,” she continued.

Trump explains Melania thought he died in assassination attempt: ‘Thought the worst had happened’

Former President Donald Trump said former first lady Melania Trump still cannot talk about the assassination attempt that took place earlier this month.

“She was watching live,” Donald Trump told Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle, explaining he later asked her what she felt in the moment. “She can’t even really talk about it.”

“When I went down, she thought the worst had happened,” he added.

Donald Trump coyly noted that his wife’s inability to discuss her feelings is “OK because that means she likes me or she loves me.”

“Let’s say she could talk about it freely, that wouldn’t be — I’m not so sure which is better, but she either likes or loves me and that’s nice,” Donald Trump said.

The 2024 Republican presidential nominee said he was feeling good himself since a bullet grazed his right ear at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

Donald Trump has agreed to meet with FBI agents for a victim interview as part of the bureau’s investigation of the event.

The assassination attempt has sparked intense criticism of the Secret Service, causing several Republican lawmakers to investigate the event. Despite the criticism, Donald Trump praised the Secret Service agents’ bravery, saying they rushed to him onstage while bullets were still flying through the air.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following her testimony before the House Oversight Committee last week. Since then, the House has also voted unanimously to establish a task force to investigate the assassination attempt and expose security failures that left one person dead and three others, including Donald Trump, injured.

Dana White touts Trump as ‘real American badass’ at RNC thumbnail

Dana White touts Trump as ‘real American badass’ at RNC

Ultimate Fighting Champion President and CEO Dana White touted former President Donald Trump as “the real American badass.”

White spoke at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday night, introducing Trump as he accepted the GOP presidential nomination for a third consecutive time.

“I’m telling you what I know, and I know President Trump. I know President Trump is a fighter,” White said. “The higher the stakes, the harder he fights, and this guy never ever gives up. So what is at stake here? The answer is in President Trump’s text, and I quote, ‘A fight for our country.’”

“I know President Trump is literally putting his life on the line for something bigger than himself. He is willing to risk it all because he loves this country. And I know he wants what is best for the American people,” the UFC president continued. “All American people. I know he is running for president to save our American dream.”

White’s speech drew several cheers and applause as he encouraged voters to elect Trump, praising his “badass” leadership.

“I know I will choose real American leadership and the real American badass,” White said. “I am not telling you what choice to make, I am not telling you what to think. I am telling you what I know. I know America needs a strong leader in the world, needs a strong America. I know Donald J. Trump is the best choice for president of the United States. My fellow Americans, it is my honor to introduce the 45th and soon-to-be 47th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump!”

White has supported Trump for several years. Their relationship dates back to the early 2000s when the former president began hosting UFC events at his properties.

Trump is often seen visiting UFC fights alongside White. In June, shortly after Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records by a Manhattan jury, the former president drew roaring applause and a standing ovation while attending UFC 302.

White appeared at both of the previous two RNCs where Trump accepted the nomination.

World War II and D-Day Veteran Sgt. William Pekrul drew a standing ovation as he told the Republican National Convention crowd that with former President Donald Trump “back in Commander-in-Chief, I would go back and reenlist today.“

Pekrul added that he would also “storm whatever beach my country needs me to.”

The WWII veteran also shared memories of his days fighting overseas and witnessing “the horror of the Nazi’s war camps.” He said he and his fellow service members “gave thanks to almighty God for delivering us from evil.”

Speaking of his fellow veterans, Pekrul noted that there “aren’t many of us left today, but for those of us who are here, America is still worth fighting for.”

Scalise slams Joy Reid’s idea of being ‘guardians of memory’ about Trump after assassination attempt thumbnail

Scalise slams Joy Reid’s idea of being ‘guardians of memory’ about Trump after assassination attempt

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) blasted MSNBC host Joy Reid after she shared concerns that former President Donald Trump would “rewrite himself” as both a “hero” and “victim,” suggesting the need for “guardians of memory.”

Reid’s comments, made during the first night of the Republican National Convention, follow Saturday’s assassination attempt against Trump.

“People are concerned and expressing concern that we won’t be the guardians of memory and that we will allow Donald Trump as he is, you know, bathed in the glory and grandeur of his party to rewrite himself as both a hero and a victim, that people who are the most vulnerable to not just the things he’s done but the things he’s promising to do and that that will then happen without a guardian,” Reid said during her RNC coverage Monday night.

While speaking with the Ingraham Angle on Tuesday, Scalise balked at Reid’s notion of being a “guardian of memory.”

“Who appointed people who fuel hatred every day as the guardians of memory? What memories are they talking about?” Scalise asked. “Middle America is fed up with all the far-Left malaise with high prices at the grocery store, with an open border. Trump’s the only one talking about those issues, and the Left doesn’t want to talk about them. It’s why they say all this hyperincendiary language about Donald Trump that’s got to stop, but they can’t stop doing it because they don’t want to talk about real issues.”

Scalise also drew a comparison between Trump and Ronald Reagan.

“It was the Jimmy Carter years of malaise that gave us Ronald Reagan, and think about where we are today,” the House majority leader said. “Biden has given us worse times than the Jimmy Carter years. I think at that point, you see America turn around and say, ‘We need to turn to a better time.’ And that’s where Donald Trump is.”

“Donald Trump gave us a great four years, great economy, great opportunity for people. Everybody was doing better. And this time around, I think you are seeing President Trump even more sharp focused on what those needs are that people want,” Scalise continued. “They want a strong leader. They want somebody who is going to secure the border, who’s going to tackle these issues that Joe Biden created. And the energy has never been higher. Our unity, by the way, Laura, I have never seen us this unified, and that’s saying a lot.”

Amber Rose slams Left’s ‘lies’: ‘Realize the truth. American families were better when Donald Trump was president’

Celebrity model and rapper Amber Rose touted a hopeful outlook when thinking about former President Donald Trump returning to the White House, calling on voters to “cut through the lies” of the Left.

Rose spoke on the first night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, admitting that she was once against Trump.

“I’m here tonight to tell you, no matter your political background, that the best chance we have to give our babies a better life is to elect Donald Trump president of the United States,” Rose said to a cheering crowd.

“I believed the left-wing propaganda that Donald Trump was a racist. My father said, ‘No he‘s not, Amber. What are you talking about?’ When I insisted, he said, ‘Prove it.’ To prove my father wrong, I did my research and looked into all things Donald Trump,” she continued. “My message to you tonight comes from a humble place. The Left told me to hate Trump and the people who support him. When you cut through the lies you realize the truth. American families were better when Donald Trump was president.”

Rose also shared about the time she met Trump and former first lady Melania Trump.

“He was kind and generous and funny as hell,” she said of Trump. “Very funny. The First Lady was gracious and smart with a smile that would brighten up any room.”

The model, whose full name is Amber Rose Levonchuck, announced her support for Trump in a social media post, sharing photos of her with Trump.

On Monday night, she reiterated her support before the RNC crowd, drawing smiles from Trump as he watched.

“You know our country is in trouble. When you go to the store and buy. For your family, you are shocked. When you fill up your gas tank, you are pissed. I know I am. And when you turn on the news, you are just exhausted. Inflation is out of control. And you know in your heart it was not like this under Donald Trump,” she said. “We were safer, wealthier and stronger. A vote for Donald Trump is a vote to put money back in our pockets and good food on our kids‘ plates. Or, as Trump would say, it‘s a vote to make America great again.”

In addition to her work as a model, rapper, author, and TV personality, Rose is known for her high-profile relationships with rappers Wiz Khalifa and Kanye West.

Electric vehicles require more repairs than gas-powered cars: Study

A new study found that owners of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are more likely to experience problems than those who own gas-powered cars.

J.D. Power recently announced its 2024 Initial Quality Survey, showing that new EV owners reported problems at a far greater rate than those driving traditional combustion vehicles.

The study analyzed data gathered from more than 99,000 buyers and lessees of 2024 model cars, showing EV drivers reported a rate of 226 problems per 100 vehicles in comparison to 180 problems per 100 gas-powered cars.

The most commonly reported problem related to false or unnecessary warning messages, including vehicle’s driver assistance systems, reverse automatic emergency braking, and backseat warnings.

Controls and displays were the second-most common problem, with EV drivers reporting such concerns 30% more often than those of traditional combustion cars.

Infotainment errors, including those related to connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay systems, were another commonly reported frustration among drivers.

“It is not surprising that the introduction of new technology has challenged manufacturers to maintain vehicle quality,” Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, said. “However, the industry can take solace in the fact that some problem areas such as voice recognition and parking cameras are seen as less problematic now than they were a year ago.”

The McKinsey and Company’s Mobility Consumer Pulse Survey also recently found that nearly half of EV owners in the United States desire to purchase a gas-powered car as their next vehicle.

Another study found that nearly one in five charging stations in the U.S. are considered faulty, causing EV drivers significant frustration and “range anxiety.”
