House Speaker Johnson slams White House’s silence on Olympics opening ceremony controversy: ‘An endorsement’

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., slammed the White House Tuesday for failing to address the controversial Olympics opening ceremony skit that appeared to showcase drag queens reenacting the Last Supper with Jesus and his disciples.

“The White House has had every opportunity to condemn the Olympics’ shameful mockery of the Last Supper, but they refuse to do it,” Johnson wrote in a post on X. “Their silence should be taken as an endorsement. The more than 200 million Christians in America should take note.”

During Tuesday’s White House briefing, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to answer questions about President Biden’s take on the performance.

“I don’t have anything. I appreciate the question, I just don’t have anything to share,” Jean-Pierre said while shrugging and smiling.

BIDEN, HARRIS CALLED OUT BY RELIGIOUS GROUP FOR STAYING SILENT ON ‘INSULTING’ OLYMPICS LAST SUPPER DRAG PARODY

When reporters said Christians were offended by the opening act, Jean-Pierre giggled and continued to dodge answering what Biden’s stance was on the performance.

“I just answered your question. I don’t have anything else to add,” Jean-Pierre said through chuckles.

Biden, who has often spoken about his Catholic faith, has yet to comment on the event.

First lady Jill Biden praised the opening ceremony as “spectacular” in remarks from Paris but did not specifically comment on the drag queen skit.

When asked about the opening ceremony and backlash from the religious community, neither Biden nor Vice President Kamala Harris’ offices responded to Fox News Digital.

Other Christian U.S. leaders called the scene “insulting” and part of a “war on our faith.”

JILLIAN MICHAELS BLASTS OLYMPICS OPENING CEREMONY FOR ‘HYPOCRISY’ FOLLOWING LAST SUPPER ‘MOCKERY’

Johnson spoke out right after the performance and called it an attack on Christian values.

“Last night’s mockery of the Last Supper was shocking and insulting to Christian people around the world who watched the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games,” Johnson previously said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “The war on our faith and traditional values knows no bounds today. But we know that truth and virtue will always prevail.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also called out the performance, echoing Johnson’s comments.

“The mockery of Christians during the Olympics opening ceremony is a symbol of cultural decline,” DeSantis wrote.

Biden’s call for SCOTUS overhaul par for the Democratic course; experts call changes a ‘pipe dream’

President Biden’s latest call to overhaul the Supreme Court and his warning that “extremism is undermining public confidence” in the bench, is part of an ongoing pattern of institutional criticism, some legal experts have said.

Biden called Monday for term limits and ethics guardrails for the justices to “prevent abuse of presidential power and restore faith in the Supreme Court.”

Over the past few decades, Democrats have clamored for institutional change, usually after facing political headwinds from a decision.

Another example followed the 2016 election, when Democrats like Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts called for the abolition of the electoral college.

BIDEN’S SCOTUS CRITIQUES LARGELY UNPRECEDENTED, EXPERTS SAY

Warren argued in 2019 during a campaign stop in Jackson, Mississippi, that non-swing states are not often visited during the general election, and their voters are often overlooked.

At the same time, other Democrats were livid at the fact former presidental candidate Hillary Clinton scored many more popular votes than Donald Trump, but Trump won by 77 electors.

In 2013, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid, D-Nev., invoked the “nuclear option” to eliminate the 60-vote threshold for Senate-vetted nominees.

At the time, Sen. Mitch McConnell warned Reid, “You’ll regret this, and you may regret this a lot sooner than you think.”

Within a few years, McConnell’s premonition came to pass as Democrats erupted at the Kentucky Republican after he utilized Reid’s precedent to extend the “option” to Supreme Court nominees and quickly shepherded Trump’s picks through the confirmation process.

Democrats have decried censorship of journalists on X during Elon Musk’s tenure, while having limited qualms with the Jack Dorsey-led Twitter censoring the New York Post’s Hunter Biden bombshell.

Legal experts characterized the reality of the proposed changes as exceedingly unlikely.

SCHUMER PLANS TO STRIP TRUMP OF IMMUNITY FOLLOWING SCOTUS RULING

“With respect to Biden wanting to institute term limits on Supreme Court justices, this is a pipe dream at best,” said Ken Belkin, a criminal defense and civil rights attorney in New York.

“U.S. Supreme Court Justices’ terms are set by the Constitution, and they are set for life — so long as the justice serves in good behavior. In order to set term limits like President Biden proposes, it would require a constitutional amendment.”

Belkin noted the tenuous process to pass a constitutional amendment. Thirty-eight state legislatures must approve it.

Expanding the court, he noted, could, however, be done through legislative action.

“The attacks on the Supreme Court are being inflamed by certain politicians and media outlets who seem to either have a fundamental misunderstanding of the court’s role or are intentionally misleading the public,” Belkin added.

“The court does not exist to rubber stamp one’s policy preferences whether they be liberal or conservative.”

Another legal expert offered that there is indeed a trend on the left to overhaul institutions.

“Clearly, if the left sees something that it doesn’t like, it ordains it to be a problem that has to be fixed. Here, of course, they are trying to monkey around with the one branch of government that is, that they don’t control, and that is supposed to be independent,” said former Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Malcolm.

Malcolm, now a senior legal fellow at the right-leaning Heritage Foundation, said judges have a lifetime tenure because they are supposed to be independent, and that it is the transition to six conservative justices on the bench that has made the left “go nuts.”

Malcolm noted justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito had been under fire from Democrats for accepting trips from wealthy friends, pointing out silence on that side of the aisle when the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg did the same thing.

Throughout Biden’s decades in office, Malcolm said, Biden has never voiced such support for court reforms, but he has done so with 99 days to go in his political career.

“This is blatantly political [and] designed to rally the Democratic base,” Malcolm said.

“It’s not about trying to address a so-called problem or a serious effort at reforms.”

As for the political angle of the apparent pattern, Article III Project President Mike Davis said Biden is corruptly trying to “selectively disqualify” justices he doesn’t like.

“And our president, who politicized and weaponized his Justice Department to destroy his political opponent, now wants to destroy the Supreme Court who stopped him,” said Davis, whose organization has a textualist interpretation of the Constitution and helps vet and confirm judicial nominees such as Justice Neil Gorsuch.

“[Biden’s] vice president aided and abetted him every step of the way,” Davis added.

Davis called the behavior on the left “the gravest threat imaginable to our republic,” saying Biden and Harris are essentially trying to destroy a co-equal branch of government.

“Both are the ‘dictator’ and ‘danger to democracy’ they project onto their political opponents,” Davis said.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

VP Harris holds rally in crucial battleground state days before Trump at same venue

ATLANTA — Vice President Harris headlined a rally Tuesday evening in battleground Georgia’s capital and largest city, where she stood in front of the largest crowd this cycle for the Democratic Party’s national ticket.

Hours before the vice president arrived in Atlanta, the Georgia State Convocation Center was filling up with supporters. And minutes before Harris arrived, her campaign told Fox News that there were over 10,000 people filling the packed venue.

The rally, which featured a performance by hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion, appears to be another sign of the energy and excitement that’s returning to the party nine days after President Biden’s blockbuster announcement that he was suspending his re-election campaign against former President Trump and endorsing his vice president.

“We have a fight in front of us,” the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee said to cheers from the boisterous crowd. “The momentum in this race is shifting. And there are signs Donald Trump is feeling it.”

1 OF THESE 5 DEMOCRATS COULD BE HARRIS’ RUNNING MATE

Biden’s immediate backing of Harris a week and a half ago ignited a surge of endorsements for the vice president by Democrat governors, senators, House members and other party leaders and elders. Within 36 hours, Harris announced that she had locked up her party’s nomination by landing the verbal backing of a majority of the nearly 4,000 convention delegates.

2024 AD WARS: TRUMP, HARRIS RACE TO DEFINE VICE PRESIDENT

Harris, near the top of her 18-minute speech, took aim at Trump over the issue of border security, which many Republicans see as the vice president’s political achilles heel.

“In this campaign I will proudly put my record against his,” Harris said, before highlighting her border security efforts as California attorney general.

Harris argued that Trump “has been talking a big game about securing our border, but he does not walk the walk.”

She pointed to a border security bill with some bipartisan support that was making its way through Congress earlier this year before Republicans turned against the measure after prompting from Trump.

“It was all set to pass, but at the last minute Trump directed his allies in the Senate to vote it down,” Harris said.

She charged that the former president “tanked the bipartisan deal because he thought it would help him win an election” and pledged that “as the president I will bring back the border security bill that Donald Trump killed.”

Trump, his campaign, and allied groups, have repeatedly criticized Harris over the past week over the surge of migrants over the nation’s southern border during the Biden administration.

Harris was tasked by Biden in 2021 with leading the diplomatic outreach to tackle the “root causes” of migration in Central American countries. It led to her being dubbed the “border czar” both by the media and Republican opponents, although the White House has rejected that description.

The Trump campaign took to social media to respond.

“Kamala is actually *BRAGGING* about her record on immigration. HERE ARE THE FACTS: As Border Czar, Kamala ferried 15+ million illegals directly into our communities. She thinks illegal immigration “is NOT a crime.” She wants to abolish ICE. She thinks you’re stupid,” the Trump campaign claimed.

Hours earlier, the Trump campaign – in its first major ad blitz of the general election – charged that Harris had “failed us” in securing the border.

Harris, in her speech, criticized the former president for not agreeing to debate her.

“He won’t debate but he and his running mate sure have a lot to say about me,” she said, as she pointed to Trump and Sen. JD Vance’s attacks on her in recent days.

To cheers from the crowd, Harris emphasized “if you have something to say, say it to my face.”

The stop by Harris is a key test of the Democrats’ momentum on the ground in the key southeastern battleground state where Biden narrowly edged Trump four years ago.

Once a red bastion, Georgia has become extremely competitive in presidential, Senate and gubernatorial elections in recent cycles, thanks in large part to the growing strength of Black and Latino voters, who make up a key party of the Democrats’ base in the state.

HOW LONG WILL THE HARRIS ‘HONEYMOON’ IN THE POLLS LAST?

But Biden’s disastrous performance against Trump at a late June debate that was held in Atlanta fueled questions about his physical and mental abilities to serve another four years in the White House.

It also spurred a rising chorus of calls from within his own party for the 81-year-old president to end his bid for a second term in the White House.

Trump’s edge over Biden in the key battleground states, including Georgia, started to grow in public opinion polling in the wake of the debate.

The former president is intent on winning Georgia in November.

And hours before Harris arrived in Atlanta, the Trump campaign announced that the former president and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, will hold a rally on Saturday at the Georgia State Convocation Center, where Harris held her event.

Trump will likely also fill the venue as the former president has been drawing large crowds at his rallies since launching his 2024 campaign over a year and a half ago.

The Harris campaign, ahead of the Atlanta rally, highlighted the campaign’s large ground game advantage over Trump’s campaign in the swing states.

Battleground states director Dan Kanninen noted that the campaign has 24 coordinated offices in Georgia, far ahead of the Trump campaign, which opened its first office in June.

“This battleground advantage will almost certainly be decisive in a race likely to be decided by just tens of thousands of votes,” Kanninen said.

The vice president, ahead of the rally, met with local abortion rights activists in another sign of how she plans to showcase the issue as a central part of her White House campaign.

The vice president, ahead of the rally, met with local abortion rights activists in another sign of how she plans to showcase the issue as a central part of her White House campaign.

, ATLANTA — Vice President Harris headlined a rally Tuesday evening in battleground Georgia’s capital and largest city, where she stood in front of the largest crowd this cycle for the Democratic Party’s national ticket. And there are signs Donald Trump is feeling it.”  1 OF THESE 5 DEMOCRATS COULD BE HARRIS’ RUNNING MATE Biden’s immediate backing of Harris a week and a half ago ignited a surge of endorsements for the vice president by Democrat governors, senators, House members and other party leaders and elders. Within 36 hours, Harris announced that she had locked up her party’s nomination by landing the verbal backing of a majority of the nearly 4,000 convention delegates. 2024 AD WARS: TRUMP, HARRIS RACE TO DEFINE VICE PRESIDENT Harris, near the top of her 18-minute speech, took aim at Trump over the issue of border security, which many Republicans see as the vice president’s political achilles heel. “In this campaign I will proudly put my record against his,” Harris said, before highlighting her border security efforts as California attorney general. Harris argued that Trump “has been talking a big game about securing our border, but he does not walk the walk.” She pointed to a border security bill with some bipartisan support that was making its way through Congress earlier this year before Republicans turned against the measure after prompting from Trump. “It was all set to pass, but at the last minute Trump directed his allies in the Senate to vote it down,” Harris said.  She charged that the former president “tanked the bipartisan deal because he thought it would help him win an election” and pledged that “as the president I will bring back the border security bill that Donald Trump killed.” Trump, his campaign, and allied groups, have repeatedly criticized Harris over the past week over the surge of migrants over the nation’s southern border during the Biden administration. Libertarian presidential candidate Chase Oliver: Social Security a ‘bankrupt Ponzi scheme’

Libertarian Party presidential candidate Chase Oliver is on a mission to slash government and promote free-market solutions to America’s problems.

In an age of rising government spending across the board, it’s an ambitious goal, but Oliver has already knocked off both Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Donald Trump in securing the Libertarian Party’s nomination.

TRUMP COURTS LIBERTARIANS TO DRAW PARTY ACTIVISTS AWAY FROM RFK JR.: ‘IF WE UNITE, WE ARE UNSTOPPABLE’

Recently, he sat down with Fox News Digital at FreedomFest in Las Vegas for an interview.

Often billed as America’s third-largest political party, the Libertarian Party considered appeals by both Trump and RFK Jr., before moving forward with Oliver after seven closely contested rounds of voting at the party’s national convention in Washington, D.C., in May.

Oliver is a former Democrat who supported Barack Obama in 2008, before becoming disillusioned with the party’s foreign policy.

Oliver argues that the two-party system is rotten, and that both parties are fundamentally failing Americans when it comes to individual and economic freedoms.

“Well, I’m running for president because I think voters deserve to have more than two options on their ballot,” he said. “They deserve to have a choice that’s fighting for each and every person’s individual liberty that supports the power of free markets, voluntary exchange, and doesn’t seek to use government as the solution on the left or the right. And so I’m happy to be that choice for voters.”

TRUMP, IN HOSTILE TERRITORY, FACES BOOING DURING LIBERTARIAN PARTY CONVENTION AS MEMBERS PICK THEIR NOMINEE

Prior to being elected the Libertarian Party nominee, Oliver was most famous for acting as an alleged spoiler in Georgia’s 2022 U.S. Senate race, forcing the election into a runoff. Oliver disputes the term “spoiler.”

“Well, I always say you can’t spoil what’s already rotten, which is the two-party system. But I was happy to be a choice for those voters. We had a runoff system for that very reason. And it’s why I encourage things like preferential voting or instant runoff voting, ranked choice voting, whatever you want to call it,” he said. “Because that removes the so-called spoiler effect and allows for voters to put their first preference first and, rank it on down the line. So I was happy that I paused the voting for about four weeks, but the eventual winner was the guy who was leading on the first ballot. So I don’t really feel like I spoiled [the race].”

Oliver said he’ll start making considerable cuts to the size of government on day one.

“The first pledge that I would make is that any budget sent to me that isn’t balanced would be a vetoed budget…We have to challenge the Congress to actually start cutting government, and it has to come from, not just one department or the other,” he said. “In fact, you can remove whole departments…things like the Department of Education can immediately be dismantled, removing that from the federal taxpayer’s balance sheet. But in every department of government, there’s at least redundancies…I would cut down everything, including the third rail of American politics, Social Security.”

Oliver said he believes that Social Security is an unsustainable “Ponzi scheme,” and calls for it to be replaced with a program based on market investments.

“It’s bankrupt. It’s a Ponzi scheme. We’ve paid into the system. We don’t get out what we were promised. And ultimately, it’s going to go belly up because the math just doesn’t work. And so it is a failed federal program. Much like many federal programs,” he said. “It costs too much and it doesn’t deliver. And I think it’s better for us younger voters or for younger folks especially, to be given our money back so we can invest in the marketplace. I don’t want to take it away from my parents or grandparents who are living on those benefits, but I’m never going to get those benefits, even if I pay in until the day I retire.”

LIBERTARIANS SELECT CHASE OLIVER AS PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE, VERY LITTLE SUPPORT SHOWN FOR TRUMP, RFK JR

On immigration, Oliver said he believes that market equilibrium will solve the immigration problem. He’s an advocate for free movement of people across borders, but also a staunch opponent of the welfare state.

“The free market is going to bring the jobs here…If we had a free movement of people, they would come, if there’s work here. They wouldn’t, if there isn’t. I understand we have got to remove the welfare benefit. That is something that libertarians have been fighting for over 50 years,” he said. “We can walk and chew gum at the same time. We can tear down the welfare state, while also allowing people to come in here and work.”

Oliver’s foreign policy and economic policy converge on a vision of American leadership where economic engagement and trade drive our values and interests, as opposed to overseas military involvement.

“Some of the most patriotic people are people who have fled these authoritarian dictatorships in Latin America and around the world,” he said. “We need to let them come here and utilize their economic output, their economic power here…And ultimately, what you do is…we export our values with market forces and with free and voluntary exchange, instead of the bomb, the bullet and the drone.

“This actually…helped tear down the Berlin Wall. It wasn’t just Ronald Reagan saying ‘tear down the wall.’ It was Wrangler jeans and McDonald’s and Coca-Cola and all the American exceptionalism that people wanted on the other side of the Iron Curtain that helped tear down these things and bring those forces to bear.”

Finally, Oliver said he is enthused by last year’s presidential election of the self-described “anarcho-capitalist” and fellow Libertarian Javier Milei in Argentina, and hopes that it is a sign of the rising global appeal of libertarian ideas and principles.

“Ultimately, we’re going to wear them down and, see, hopefully the people back at home rising up against socialism as they did in Argentina, against Peronism,” Oliver said. “We now have a libertarian head of state in South America. I hope he’s not the last one, and I hope we can export that…and bring that to North America as well.”

Cuban regime’s reported return to meddling in US elections a ‘badge of honor’ for targeted critics thumbnail

Cuban regime’s reported return to meddling in US elections a ‘badge of honor’ for targeted critics

With a presidential election drawing near, 90 miles off the U.S. mainland, the Communist Cuban government is reportedly attempting to once again influence down ballot races as it did two years ago.

One such target-rich area is reportedly South Florida, where a large majority of Cuban émigrés and Cuban-Americans now live after their families escaped the regime long controlled by the Castro brothers.

In a Monday briefing with reporters, an ODNI official confirmed the Cuban government is attempting to counter American candidates opposed to the communist regime, according to the Miami Herald

During the 2022 election, the intelligence community discovered Cuba had attempted to “denigrat[e]” certain candidates there. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., who was born in Cuba and represents the Florida Keys and part of Miami-Dade, said at the time he believed he was one such target.

LAWMAKERS TORCH FEDS’ CUBA REGULATION ADJUSTMENT AS ‘LIFELINE TO GREATEST ENEMY IN OUR HEMISPHERE’

Other lawmakers suspected of being targets of Cuban interference at the time included fellow Miamians Mario Diaz-Balart and Maria Elvira Salazar — both Republicans.

A source told Fox News Digital that one avenue the Cubans have used to target such lawmakers is to utilize social media so-called “bots” that attack Republicans from the political right, to make them unpalatable to the greater electorate.

Salazar said Tuesday she is the “No. 1 enemy… in Congress” of Miguel Diaz-Canel’s regime in Havana.

“[I]t is no surprise to me that they are trying to subvert our elections,” said Salazar, who notably represents “Little Havana,” just west of downtown Miami.

“Our American democracy is stronger than these weak attempts to silence their critics. We will be watching in 2024.”

TOP REPUBLICAN, 70, CALLS CHEATLE’S SLOPED ROOF DEFENSE ‘THE FINAL STRAW’

Gimenez added Tuesday that he wears “like a badge of honor” the target Cuba has reportedly placed on him.

The former Miami-Dade County mayor quipped that his goal is to remain in Congress longer than the regime remains in El Capitolio Nacional. Diaz-Canel is the first non-Castro to rule the island since Fulgencio Batista was overthrown in 1959.

“I would expect myself, Maria and Mario would be their main targets again — along with Sen. Rick Scott,” Gimenez said in the interview.

“I guess it’s something that we live with here in South Florida: the fact that the Cuban regime thinks that we are their enemies.”

“We are their enemies. We want freedom for the Cuban people. And we won’t stop until we get freedom for the Cuban people. So, take your best shot, what can I say?”

When asked whether Congress can or should act against Cuba’s efforts, Gimenez was hesitant.

“I’m not sure what Congress can do about it,” he said, adding that if they were to do anything it would very likely fall in the censorship or “fact-checking” realm.

He said he opposes censorship and has concerns that fact-checkers “fact-check” based inherently on their own ideological bend — suggesting such action would do more harm than good.

“The responsibility really lies with the people and to determine what they’re reading is true or false,” he said. “So, I’m not concerned about it that much.”

At the other end of the Tamiami Trail, Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., also condemned Cuba’s behavior.

“The Communist Cuban regime is an oppressive dictatorship that has inflicted unimaginable horrors on the Cuban people,” the Naples lawmaker said.

“In South Florida, we stand for freedom. In South Florida, we stand for human rights. And in South Florida, we will never surrender to the evils of communism,” he said.

Donalds said such election interference from across the Florida Straits should never be tolerated.

Fox News Digital reached out to the ODNI for comment, and was provided a copy of the agency’s report on foreign election “threats” during the 2022 cycle — wherein Cuba was cataloged beside Iran, China and Russia.

Much of the report was redacted, but in unredacted pieces of the Cuba section, the agency assessed that Havana tried to undermine “electoral prospects of specific U.S. congressional and gubernatorial politicians it perceived as hostile.”

The report indicated that political parties across the board, including Republicans and Democrats, were the focal points of attention. It further highlighted that South Florida’s heightened interest in the island nation made it a particularly susceptible hotspot for influence.

Another angle the Cuban government has sought to influence American voters has been through the media. According to the report, they have sought to build relationships with journalists who share their opposing views of Congress’ Cuba critics.

Gimenez said that sounded like a good strategy for the malign regime, while quipping, “The fact they can find useful idiots in the American media — that’s a problem for the useful idiots.”

Schumer silent on Biden oil purchase after blasting Trump for ‘bailout for big oil’

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., didn’t criticize President Biden’s Department of Energy for a massive oil purchase to help replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) despite slamming former President Trump in 2020 for attempting to include a similar purchase in a stimulus package.

The DOE announced a purchase of 4.65 million barrels of oil Monday to replenish the SPR, which has been tapped by the Biden administration, to assist with high gas prices.

The department bought the oil for an average price of $77.

GOP, DEM SENATORS UNITE TO CONDEMN ‘HORRIFYING’ TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT

“From the beginning, this administration has put the economic and energy security of the American people first. This milestone is a proof point that when the Biden-Harris administration makes and implements a plan, we deliver for the American people,” Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said in a statement.

“As promised, we have secured the 180 million barrels back to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve released in response to Putin’s war in Ukraine, and we accomplished this while getting a good deal for taxpayers and maintaining the readiness of the world’s largest Strategic Petroleum Reserve.”

SCHUMER WON’T COMMIT TO SENATE VOTES FOR BIDEN’S LONG-SHOT RADICAL SCOTUS OVERHAUL

There was little response to the oil purchase, which was not heavily advertised by the president or the White House. For Democratic and Republican lawmakers, it went largely undetected as the investigation into the failures that led to the attempted assassination of Trump earlier this month attracted most of their attention.

Two key pieces of legislation related to online safety for minors and a potential expansion to the child tax credit were slated for votes during the week, drawing additional attention.

TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT: NEW TEXTS SHOW LOCAL POLICE SCRAMBLED TO ASSIST WITH COVERING RALLY

Schumer’s office did not provide comment to Fox News Digital when asked if there was a difference between Trump and Biden’s oil purchases for the SPR and whether the president was similarly “bailing out” large oil companies.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Trump’s administration sought to include $3 billion for purchasing oil to replenish the SPR at a low price in the $2 trillion pandemic stimulus package. Oil was roughly $30 per barrel in March 2020 as prices trended sharply downward. The Trump administration’s proposal was ultimately excluded from the final draft of the legislation following significant pushback from Democrats.

Schumer referred to the Trump administration’s request as a “$3 billion bailout for big oil,” Roll Call reported at the time.

Senate passes bill to protect kids online and make tech companies accountable for harmful content thumbnail

Senate passes bill to protect kids online and make tech companies accountable for harmful content

The Senate overwhelmingly passed legislation Tuesday that is designed to protect children from dangerous online content, pushing forward with what would be the first major effort by Congress in decades to hold tech companies more accountable for the harm that they cause.

The bill, which passed 91-3, has been pushed by parents of children who died by suicide after online bullying or have otherwise been harmed by online content. It would force companies to take reasonable steps to prevent harm on online platforms frequently used by minors, requiring them to exercise “duty of care” and ensure that they generally default to the safest settings possible.

KIDS AND SMARTPHONES: HOW YOUNG IS TOO YOUNG? EXPERTS REVEAL IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS

The House has not yet acted on the bill, but Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has said he is “committed to working to find consensus.” Supporters are hoping that the strong Senate vote will push the House to act before the end of the congressional session in January.

The legislation is about allowing children, teens and parents “to take back control of their lives online,” said Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, who wrote the bill with Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee. He said that the message to big tech companies is that “we no longer trust you to make decisions for us.”

The bill would be the first major tech regulation package to move in years, and it could potentially pave the way for other bills that would strengthen online privacy laws or set parameters for the growing use of artificial intelligence, among others. While there has long been bipartisan support for the idea that the biggest technology companies should face more government scrutiny, there has been little consensus on how it should be done. Congress passed legislation earlier this year that would force China-based social media company TikTok to sell or face a ban, but that law only targets one company.

“This is a good first step, but we have more to go,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

If the child safety bill becomes law, companies would be required to mitigate harm to children, including bullying and violence, the promotion of suicide, eating disorders, substance abuse, sexual exploitation and advertisements for illegal products such as narcotics, tobacco or alcohol.

To do that, social media platforms would have to provide minors with options to protect their information, disable addictive product features and opt out of personalized algorithmic recommendations. They would also be required to limit other users from communicating with children and limit features that “increase, sustain, or extend the use” of the platform — such as autoplay for videos or platform rewards.

The idea, Blumenthal and Blackburn say, is for the platforms to be “safe by design.”

“The message we are sending to big tech is that kids are not your product,” Blackburn said at a news conference as the Senate passed the bill. “Kids are not your profit source. And we are going to protect them in the virtual space.”

Several tech companies, including Microsoft, X and Snap, have supported the legislation. But NetChoice, a a tech industry group that represents X and Snap, along with Google, TikTok and Meta Platforms, called it unconstitutional.

Carl Szabo, a vice president and counsel for the group, said in a statement that the law’s “cybersecurity, censorship, and constitutional risks remain unaddressed.” He did not elaborate.

Blumenthal and Blackburn have said they worked to find a balance between forcing companies to become more responsible for what children see online while also ensuring that Congress does not go too far in regulating what individuals post — an effort to head off potential legal challenges and win over lawmakers who worry that regulation could impose on freedom of expression.

In addition to First Amendment concerns, some critics have said the legislation could harm kids who wouldn’t be able to access information on LGBTQ+ issues or reproductive rights — although the bill has been revised to address many of those criticisms, and major LGBTQ+ groups have decided to support the proposed legislation.

The bill also includes an update to child privacy laws that prohibit online companies from collecting personal information from users under 13, raising that age to 17. It would also ban targeted advertising to teenagers and allow teens or guardians to delete a minor’s personal information.

Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, sponsored the original legislation in 1998 — the last time Congress passed a child online safety law — and worked with Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana on the update. Markey said that the online space “has come a long way” since the first bill and new tools are needed for parents as teens have struggled with mental health.

As their bill stalled for several months, Blumenthal and Blackburn worked closely with the parents of children who have been harmed by social media — either by cyberbullying or social media challenges, extortion attempts, eating disorders, drug deals or other potential dangers. At an emotional news conference last week, the parents said they were pleased that the Senate is finally moving ahead with the legislation.

Maurine Molak, the mother of a 16-year-old who died by suicide after “months of relentless and threatening cyberbullying,” said she believes the bill can save lives. She urged every senator to vote for it.

“Anyone who believes that children’s well-being and safety should come before big tech’s greed ought to put their mark on this historic legislation,” Molak said.

Biden top adviser Anita Dunn leaves White House for super PAC supporting Harris

President Biden’s senior adviser Anita Dunn, who has longtime ties to former President Barack Obama, is leaving the White House to join a top Democratic super PAC to support its efforts to elect Vice President Harris in November, Fox News has learned.

Dunn served as a political strategist and adviser to Biden on his 2020 campaign and served in the White House during his first term. Sources told Fox News that Dunn was effectively exiled from Biden’s inner circle in the days and weeks following his disastrous debate performance against former President Trump in June. Dunn played a heavy role in preparing Biden for that showdown.

“Four years ago, when I launched my campaign for the battle for the soul of our nation, I was grateful Anita Dunn was right there with me. I’ve known Anita throughout my career,” Biden said in a statement Tuesday.

“She’s served our nation through three Administrations and countless campaigns for candidates at every level. She’s not only a key senior member of our team that helped us win a historic election in 2020 – she’s also been an invaluable part of our White House.”

KAMALA HARRIS’ TREATMENT OF STAFF UNDER SCRUTINY AS REPORTS OF POOR OFFICE CULTURE RESURFACE

Biden said Dunn is “tough and tested, and her experience and intellect have helped us deliver historic results for the American people.”

“I deeply value her counsel and friendship and I will continue to rely on her partnership and insights as we finish the job over the next six months,” Biden said.

Dunn said it has been “an honor and privilege to serve in this White House, with this President and this team, during this transformational term.”

Fox News has learned that Dunn is joining Future Forward, the super PAC, and will help with their efforts on behalf of Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

It’s unclear what specific role Dunn will be assuming at Future Forward or what her duties will entail.

Before joining the White House, Dunn served as a senior adviser on Biden’s presidential campaign.

A source told Fox News that Dunn was widely credited with having steered the 2020 Biden campaign “so ably” after Iowa and New Hampshire – an interim period before then-Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon was brought on board.

Dunn also previously served as a chief strategist for Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and then served as his White House communications director until 2009.

HARRIS NOW BACKING AWAY FROM SEVERAL FAR-LEFT STANCES SHE ONCE PROMOTED

A source told Fox News that when Biden decided to announce the suspension of his re-election campaign amid pressure from within the Democratic Party after the debate, Dunn found out about his decision just one minute before the public – on a call with the rest of Biden’s staff.

Multiple sources told Fox News there was a long-standing rift between Hunter Biden, Dunn, and Dunn’s husband, Bob Bauer. Dunn and Bauer had advocated that Biden keep his son’s legal issues far away from the White House.

After the debate, sources said Hunter “got his way” and the inner circle began to exclude Dunn.

A source familiar with Dunn’s exit said she could have remained in her role should she have chosen to.

Dunn’s departure is being quietly celebrated by some Biden-Harris administration staffers who have had frosty relations with her throughout her tenure, sources said. The sources suggested staffers believe Dunn was behind a series of leaks – including one pushing for the ouster of White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre to an unsolicited job opportunity at Emily’s List. Jean-Pierre’s departure never materialized.

Additional sources within the White House voiced suspicion to Fox News that Dunn also may have been responsible for leaks about Hunter Biden’s presence in Biden’s meetings with senior advisors, while pressure was building to end his campaign and his family encouraged him to remain in the race.

Sources told Fox News that Hunter was pushing his father to dismiss Dunn at the time – a move fueled by their longstanding rift.

Other sources within the White House rejected the idea that Dunn would have played a role in any of the recent leaks, including some others which sought to direct blame over the debate fallout to aides closest to the president.

New Secret Service chief grilled on ‘pattern of negligence’ within agency after Trump assassination attempt

FIRST ON FOX: A group of House Republicans is accusing the U.S. Secret Service of a potential “pattern of negligence” amid continued fallout over the attempted assassination of former President Trump.

Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., is leading a letter to acting USSS Director Ronald Rowe raising alarms about a recent report suggesting the agency could be facing some negative revelations in a forthcoming Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General report about the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“It is unfathomable that an assassin was able to gain access to and fire shots at President Trump from an unsecure building with a direct line of sight to the rally stage. It is equally unfathomable that public reporting suggests that U.S. Secret Service had identified the building as a potential vulnerability and failed to include that vulnerability within the security perimeter or otherwise ensure the security of the roof,” the lawmakers wrote of the July 13 shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

TRUMP SHOOTING: TIMELINE OF ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW GUNMAN EVADED SECURITY

The letter then pivoted to a Politico report, stating, “Public reporting indicates that the Secret Service is in possession of a draft report by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General (DHS OIG) focused on Secret Service’s preparation for and response to events on January 6, 2021.”

“The story specifically states that the release of the report ‘could cast light on a series of embarrassing security lapses for the agency,’” the letter said.

“Congress, and the American people, deserve to understand whether the security lapses at the July 13, 2024, rally are part of a larger pattern of negligence on the part of the Secret Service.”

TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT: TEXTS REVEAL OFFICERS WERE AWARE OF THOMAS CROOKS 90 MINUTES BEFORE SHOOTING

Republicans are asking Rowe for a summary of the DHS watchdog report’s findings and recommendations for the Secret Service, and how those steps were carried out ahead of the Trump rally shooting, by July 31.

The letter is also signed by Reps. Eli Crane, R-Ariz., and Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo.

The Secret Service has been under a mountain of scrutiny in the wake of the shooting, which saw a 20-year-old gunman kill one rally attendee and critically injure two others. Trump himself was shot in the ear and rushed offstage by security agents.

TRUMP RALLY SHOOTING VICTIMS’ FAMILIES BREAK SILENCE, THANK COMMUNITY FOR ‘OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT’

The pushback led to the resignation of former Director Kimberly Cheatle last week after a heated House Oversight Committee hearing.

Rowe testified in an equally high-pressure scenario before the Senate on Tuesday, where he told lawmakers on the Homeland Security and Judiciary committees that the rally shooting was a “failure” of his agency.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Secret Service for comment.

Dem Fundraising Arm ActBlue Accused Of Partaking In Massive Money-Laundering Scheme thumbnail

Dem Fundraising Arm ActBlue Accused Of Partaking In Massive Money-Laundering Scheme

The New Atlantis

ActBlue Charities Inc., the most prominent political action committee for Democrat and progressive causes, is being accused of engaging in a massive money-laundering scheme involving a largely number of allegedly fraudulent donations.

Investigative researcher Parker Thayer, who works with the Capital Research Center, shared a screenshot showing tens-of-thousands of donations allegedly sent by the same Michigan individual.

“A single donor in the small town of Monroe has supposedly donated over 20,000 times since 2019, totaling >$40,000,” Thayer wrote. “They live in a 1,000 sqft house built in 1956.”

(STAY INFORMED! Download the FREE Trending Politics app)

Another donor in Brighton, Michigan has made more than 2,500 donations since October 2023. That individual’s address was listed as a retirement home.

“There are dozens more donors like the examples above, and there are two explanations,” Thayer wrote. “1. [ActBlue] is preying on seniors with poor memory by repeatedly sending them requests to sign up for stacking monthly contributions. 2. Some sort of straw-donor scheme is happening.”

Earlier this year, James O’Keefe reported on a number of suspicious ActBlue donations that mirror those made by Thayer. As part of his investigation, O’Keefe and others conducted interviews with alleged donors — most of whom were seniors — who were shocked to see the number of donations being made in their names.

In March, O’Keefe traveled to Maryland and spoke with residents whose names and addresses were linked to tens-of-thousands in donations to ActBlue and other left-wing organizations or political candidates. Almost all residents said that they had donated to ActBlue and other campaigns, though all denied making large contributions.

Federal Election Commission data analyzed by Election Watch, a citizen journalist group, revealed that hundreds of senior citizens across the nation had been making hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of individual donations to ActBlue and other campaigns.

One senior citizen had made 1,009 individual donations for a total of $18,849.77 since 2022. While she did say that she had made donations to ActBlue and Joe Biden’s election campaign, she vehemently denied having donated more than $18,000 and was shocked by the news.

A citizen journalist in New Jersey recently uncovered additional evidence of pointing to alleged campaign finance fraud targeting senior citizens in New Jersey.

One elderly woman began sobbing after being informed that over $86,000 had been donated to left-wing political campaigns in her name. “86-thousand-dollars? Oh my, that’s…I… I did that?” the distraught senior citizen said. Over 5,300 individual donations had been made in her name over the course of two years. The donations ranged from just one dollar, all the way up to $5,000.

“I don’t remember giving hundreds of dollars to Pelosi. I was just giving more like 10 dollars, I don’t remember,” the woman said while looking at the list of contributions made in her name.

On September 30, 2022, 108 donations were listed in her name. “In one day? No wonder they keep contacting me as if I’m – and they keep giving me recognition as if I’m one of the best that they have,” she said.

“It’s trivially easy to find massive, repeated donations to ActBlue that use stolen identities and, quite possibly, stolen credit cards,” Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk wrote in an X post.

“For example, one person in Virginia has been named in 22,619 separate donations since 2019, totaling more than $800,000. Obviously, she’s being exploited for some kind of money-laundering operation,” Kirk continued. “ActBlue raises from all fifty states. We have fifty state AGs. When will one of them take action?”

In response to Kirk’s post, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares vowed to investigate. “My office is aware of these allegations and rest assured, we are looking into it,” he said.

When will one of them take action?” In response to Kirk’s post, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares vowed to investigate. “My office is aware of these allegations and rest assured, we are looking into it,” he said.
