A suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting that erupted near a residence hall on the Eastern Kentucky University campus on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred just after 3:30 p.m. local time near Whitney Young Hall, a student residence building. One student was killed in the attack and another was wounded, investigators announced Tuesday.

The deceased victim was identified as De’Jon Darrell Fox Jr., age 19, a freshman from Indianapolis, Indiana. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital after being transported from the scene. The second victim, also a KSU student whose name has not been released, was listed in stable but critical condition as of December 10, 2025.

The suspect, Jacob Lee Bard, age 48, of Evansville, Indiana, was taken into custody at the scene without further incident. Bard is not a student, faculty member, or employee of Kentucky State University.

According to police reports, the incident began as a physical altercation, after which Bard produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds. The specific make and model of the firearm have not been publicly disclosed.

Bard was booked into the Franklin County Regional Jail and charged with one count of murder and one count of first-degree assault. A motive has not been officially released, but law enforcement has described the shooting as stemming from a personal dispute between the involved parties and stated it was isolated, with no ongoing threat to the campus or public.

“This was not a mass shooting or a random incident based on what I’ve been told, and the suspected shooter is already in custody. That means that while this was scary, there is no ongoing threat and I believe our families are safe, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced in a statement.

KSU President Koffi C. Akakpo said in an official statement: “We’re mourning the loss of one of our students… We are in close contact with the families and are providing every available support to them.”

The university announced Tuesday night that it had canceled all classes and final exams for the remainder of the week and made counseling services available to students, faculty, and staff.

The investigation remains active with the Frankfort Police Department and Kentucky State Police.
