Majority Of Americans Support Strikes On Drug-Trafficking Boats, Poll Finds

The New Atlantis

A recent survey from Harvard CAPS/Harris found that a comfortable majority of Americans support the Trump Administration’s strikes on drug-trafficking vessels operating off the coast of Venezuela.

In September, the  poll found that 71 percent of registered voters support the policy of blowing up boats that traffic illegal narcotics into the United States from Venezuela. This includes bipartisan  backings, as 89 percent of Republicans, 67 percent of Independents and even 56 percent of Democrats expressed a favorable opinion.

The December edition found that overall support had dipped slightly, but still remains favored with 67 percent of respondents.

This figure is notable given relentless focus on the issue from Democrats over the last several weeks, a number of whom have accused the Trump Administration of carrying out “war crimes” and even murder.

Democrats have repeatedly made the claim in reference to a September 2 operation in which a follow-up strike was ordered targeting survivors of a strike on a drug boat. Admiral Frank “Mitch” Bradley, who currently serves as the commander of U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), briefed lawmakers last week that he had ordered the strike himself, while War Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday stood by Bradley and said he also would have ordered the strike if he was in command.

Bradley added that the drug traffickers targeted were still in communication with fellow traffickers and were attempting to salvage narcotics at the time of the strike. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) said following the briefing that actions taken by the traffickers indicated that they were still in the fight, adding that the strike was valid due to “fog of war.”

“Double-tap” strikes have also been recorded under previous administrations, including former President Barack Obama. Just three days into his presidency, Obama authorized two drone strikes in Waziristan, Pakistan. Three hours apart, the strikes were the first of his administration and an early instance of double-tap tactics. At least 20 civilians were killed in the strikes.

Still, some Democrats, including Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), have claimed that Hegseth and U.S. service members are guilty of “murder.”
