Rep. Harriet Hageman Announces ‘Devastating’ News

The New Atlantis

Congresswoman Harriet Hageman (R-WY) said her family is reeling following a devastating series of wildfires burning across her district over the weekend.

Hageman, who defeated former Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) in the 2022 Republican primary, fought back tears as she described the displacement of her loved ones after their home was consumed by the flames burning near McGinnis Pass. Her childhood home sat on Wyoming’s eastern border, roughly 100 miles north of Cheyenne, before the rustic property was burned up by wildfires traveling through Haystack Range. “It’s been pretty devastating,” Hageman told Cowboy State Daily.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

From Washington, the Republican lawmaker was working the phone lines to ensure her brother Hugh and older sister Julia in Torrington were able to care for their 100-year-old mother Marion Hageman, who lives in a local nursing home. “I just saw her a couple of days ago when I was home. I’m not even sure she even knows about this fire yet,” said Hageman of their mother. “It was a very old log house, with very thick walls because they didn’t split the wood. It was very cold in the wintertime,” she recalled. “We had one woodburning stove, and we would take Montgomery Ward catalogs when we were younger and put them on the stove and heat them through, and then wrap them in fabric and take them to bed to stay warm.”

The family were unfortunate victims of shifting winds which authorities on Friday had warned were quickly changing the direction of wildfires still burning out of control. “Attention!!! Residents of Hartville and Whalen Canyon Evacuate Now! The winds have changed and the fire is advancing west. Pleasant Valley residents begin evacuation process,” the Platte County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook. Residents of Hartville and nearby Whalen Canyon were forced to evacuate for the second time in less than a week.

Others who evacuated including an entire animal shelter which reported that all staff, volunteers, and furry friends were safely displaced. “This evening we had to make the difficult decision to evacuate Kindness Ranch,” the Kindness Ranch Animal Sanctuary posted to its Facebook page. “The fire was picked up by the wind and headed our direction,” adding “large animals (are) houses safely in metal buildings with lots of food, water and a dedicated small number of staff staying back and caring for them. We are all safe, the animals and humans.”

Rep. Hagemen won her seat in 2022 with the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, who backed her allegation that Cheney was doing everything in her power to hurt his chances at returning to the White House. Cheney, a native of Wyoming and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, co-chaired the select J6 committee in Congress which has been condemned by many House Republicans for offering a slanted, revisionist report on the 2021 Capitol building riots. Hageman said her family is working to quickly pick up the pieces and reset their lives in their homeland hills.

“We grew up in an area we referred to as ‘The Hills,’” Hageman said. “We grew up in the Haystacks, and in a house that was on the Cheyenne to Deadwood stage trail. It was an old, old home, you know, 100-plus years old.” The home was “very special to all of us. That’s where we were all raised. It burned.”

BREAKING: Wall Street’s ‘Fear Index’ Rises To Startling High As Global Markets Crash

The New Atlantis

Wall Street’s primary index gauging volatility in the market has reached its highest level since Covid-19 shuttered the entire global economy, suggesting catastrophic times are ahead in the not-too-distant future.

Global markets plunged Monday morning as selloffs among traders stoked fears that a recession is on the horizon. Nasdaq futures fell 5% one business day after last month’s jobs report showed a slowdown in hiring, coupled with remarks by Fed chairman Jerome Powell suggesting he would delay any rate cut until at least September. The selloff began in the early morning hours in Japan where the Nikkei 225 fell 12%, the greatest drop since the crash of Black Monday in 1987, according to the Wall Street Journal. Shortly thereafter, American markets punished its tech sector, with shares of Nvidia, Meta and Apple each losing 9% or more. Berkshire Hathaway announced it would begin unwinding its stake in the iPhone maker, adding insult to injury. The European STOXX 600 declined 2.6% at 487.15 points, its lowest since Feb. 13, the New York Post reported.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), which tracks turbulence in American markets, has been the gold standard for gauging uncertainty during periods of financial unrest dating back to 2004. Using data from the past 30 days, the VIX computes what markets may do in the near future, giving traders a window into whether the floor will be filled with calm waters or a churning sea of waves. Unlike other stocks, VIX cannot be bought or sold directly, so instead traders must grab a stake through ETFs or other derivatives. The index stood at 65 on Monday morning, the highest since March of 2020 when it sat at 85.47, CNBC reported.

Goldman Sachs upgraded its prediction of the chance of a recession from 10% to 25% though cautioned such a risk was “limited,” the outlet added. Still, the flagship Wall Street bank’s note of concern put a fine point on the market’s hope that the Fed will institute emergency rate cuts to keep the market from slipping into historically low levels, especially during the final months of a presidential election year.

Powell has been bearish about cutting rates too soon as the Fed hopes to accomplish a “soft landing” in the market, bringing inflation down to a target rate of 2% without driving a surge in consumer spending and job growth that could throw the economy back into jeopardy. That target appears to have narrowed as of Monday morning, putting another layer of pressure on the Fed chairman to soothe fears on Wall Street. “The Federal Reserve has been late in cutting rates, but that has been true for some time. The policy error is making things worse for lower-income households,” UBS economist Paul Donovan told the New York Times.

Investors who don’t need to liquidate right away should not panic, however, said senior equity analyst Dan Ives of tech outlet Wedbush Securities. Appearing on CNBC Monday, Ives reminded stockholders that while a “massive fear panic” may stoke impulse sell-offs, they should instead “view this as more of an opportunity” to hold their assets through a tough time or look for deals in the price dips.

WATCH: Jesse Watters Makes Jessica Tarlov MELT DOWN In Hilarious Exchange About Kamala

The New Atlantis

A re-surfaced exchange between “The Five” hosts Jesse Watters and Jessica Tarlov is making the rounds. In the segment, the two hosts sparred over the merits of former President Donald Trump’s recent race-based criticisms of Vice President Kamala Harris.

When the hourlong show turned to a discussion about whether Harris is emphasizing her Black heritage to advance her nascent campaign for president, Tarlov took exception, criticizing Trump for focusing on an issue that may come across as tone-deaf to the 41 million Americans who claim biracial heritage. “There is something crucial that Republicans keep doing that is a major turnoff to the black community, and that’s insulting Kamala Harris. You don’t take someone so meaningful to that community and say she’s a diversity hire,” she told her four colleagues.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

Watters was quick to reply, humorously asking, “Can I speak for the black community for a second?” and joking that he is one percent Black. “No!” Tarlov shot back in a clip noted by the American Tribune. Continuing on, the Fox host noted that the network has a Black community correspondent who has conducted multiple man-on-the-street interviews and found little support for Harris. “We have Johnny go out and speak to the black community two times a week, and they do not support Kamala Harris. Speaking very broadly there,” he rebutted. Tarlov responded that Republicans are doing a disservice to themselves when referring to the vice president as a “diversity hire,” a warning that U.S. House Republicans have also given their colleagues as they urged lawmakers to focus on her track record rather than her race.

“If you have one of the highest achieving black women in the country who’s now made it to the vice presidency, and Republicans and people who talk about her on-air say she’s a diversity hire, she only got where she was going because she slept with Willie Brown,” she responded. Watters and fellow host Greg Gutfeld both cut in. “She did!? I didn’t know that!” Watters simultaneously asked, “She slept with Willie Brown!?” Tarlov responded, “Is that not true?” Watters then followed up, “I didn’t know that. Is that how she got ahead in politics?” Tarlov maintained, “No, of course not!” “I love it when people accuse us of spreading rumors by actually citing rumors,” Gutfeld said, wrapping up the conversation.

WATCH:

Opposition researchers have been brushing up on Harris’s personal relationship with Brown, the former speaker for the California state legislature and San Francisco mayor whom she dated in the 1990s. At the time, Brown was 60 and Harris was 29, and he has since taken credit for boosting her career in state Democratic politics, citing her appointment to a state commission she relied on to win her first election for district attorney. Aside from President Trump’s claim that Harris only recently “became Black,” some conservatives are raising questions about the pair’s relationship and whether she dated Brown despite the chasmic age difference to gain a foothold in elected office.

JUST IN: Trump Reveals Surprising Phone Call With Zuckerberg, What He Said About 2024 Election

The New Atlantis

Former President Donald Trump offered insight into a recent phone call he received from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg following the July 13th assassination attempt against him, telling Fox News he believes the onetime critic is now firmly in his corner.

During a Thursday interview with Maria Bartiromo, the 45th president spoke warmly about his call with the Facebook founder who praised him as a “badass” for standing up after being struck by a rifle round and pumping his fist in the air. A historic photo of Trump’s blood-smeared face in front of an American flag backdrop captured the moment and was even set to grace the August cover of Time Magazine, but still, the social media giant accidentally censored it. Zuckerberg called to apologize and much more, according to President Trump.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

“So Mark Zuckerberg called me – first of all he called me a few times. Washington has put Facebook in its crosshairs going back to the 2016 elections when reports emerged that Russian intelligence officials were using the platform to spread disinformation about the Trump and Hillary Clinton campaigns. As a result, Zuckerberg promised in congressional hearings to tamp down on false political rhetoric and in recent years has ordered his company to restrict political advertising in a bid to lower the temperature of a virtual town square that awards anger and engagement. The Facebook founder has also refashioned his own image, taking up kickboxing and posting annual 4th of July videos of him wakeboarding while drinking a beer and holding an American flag.

He joins rival X owner Elon Musk in supporting – at least tacitly – President Trump, another indication that Silicon Valley is torn between supporting a Republican many privately despise but feel will be good for business versus a liberal Kamala Harris more in line with their “values.” On Wednesday more than 100 tech investors like Reid Hoffman and Vinod Khosla pledged to fundraise and campaign for Harris, the New York Times reported. That puts Zuckerberg and Musk at odds with the industry’s money crowd, though both have well-established platforms that answer to shareholders instead of private financiers.

“So Mark Zuckerberg called me – first of all he called me a few times. He called me after the event and said ‘that was really amazing, that was very brave,’ and he actually announced he was not going to support a Democrat because he can’t, because he respected me for what I did that day,” he told host Maria Baritomo. “I think what I did, to me it was a normal response. JUST IN: Re-Surfaced Bombshell Could Tank Kamala’s Top VP Pick

The New Atlantis

Washington insiders are banking on Vice President Kamala Harris selecting Pennsylvania Gov. Joshua Shapiro to be her running mate, a prospect that has women’s rights groups up in arms about his sordid past.

The Daily Beast reported that the National Women’s Defense League on Thursday issued a missive to its members titled “Gov. Shapiro’s Failures Enabled Sexual Harassment” which lays out in damning detail the allegations against the Democratic executive regarding his “handling of past complaints of sexual harassment inside the Pennsylvania Governor’s office.” Advocates are calling on the vice president to lock Shapiro out of the running one year after he quietly agreed to a six-figure settlement with a former aide who alleged she faced sexual harassment inside his office. The deal involved a non-disclosure agreement, a stipulation that other Democrats have said stifles the ability of victims to speak out for fear of legal retribution.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

“Governor Shapiro’s office should have done a better job preventing sexual harassment happening in his own office by former cabinet secretary Mike Vereb, including protecting the survivor who bravely came forward, ensuring that any other potential survivors felt safe in speaking up, and ensuring the harasser didn’t have the opportunity to do further harm after the complaint,” Emma Davidson Tribbs, director of the National Women’s Defense League said. “We deserve leaders who will not brush sexual harassment under the rug, but will put accountability above politics. We need leaders who prioritize effective policies, protocols and a culture that prevents sexual harassment and protects survivors.” She added if Gov. Shapiro “really wants this to be full and transparent,” then he should allow the woman to speak freely about the ordeal.

The governor’s office responded though declined to include details about why his former aide was paid $300,000 for her troubles. “Governor Shapiro and his Administration take every allegation of discrimination and harassment extremely seriously and have robust procedures in place to thoroughly investigate all reports,” his spokesperson Manuel Bonder stated. He directed reporters to focus on the governor’s “long track record of protecting survivors and prosecuting predators” when he was attorney general, including exposing “child sexual abuse and cover-ups within the Catholic Church.”

“Those procedures are implemented in every instance where complaints of discrimination or harassment are made and all allegations are promptly and fully investigated to ensure employees feel comfortable to report misconduct. In order to protect the privacy of every current and former Commonwealth employee involved, the Administration does not comment further on specific personnel matters.”

As a popular swing-state Democrat, Gov. Shapiro fits the mold of a potential running mate in a critical state where former President Donald Trump’s populist policies and pro-fracking stance have cut into Democrats’ traditional blue-collar base of voters. However, the sexual harassment scandal has led other state Democrats to question whether he would be a smart addition to the vice president’s ticket. One Democrat running for state treasurer previously suggested that Harris select someone who “doesn’t sweep sexual harassment under the rug.”

Other landmines around Shapiro require Harris’s consideration. He was previously investigated for accepting several luxurious seats at sporting events, a potential violation of the state’s ban on gifts to elected officials. Meanwhile, progressive anti-Israel activists have leveled antisemitic attacks at the Jewish governor, suggesting his selection would unfairly elevate pro-Israel policies in a potential Harris-Shaprio administration. Others believed to be on Harris’s shortlist include red state Gov. Andy Beshear and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) has been floated as part of the mix, but recently Harris fundraisers asked Wall Street supporters to make quick donations ahead of a potential limit on federal donations to a ticket that includes a sitting state official.

WATCH: Biden Wanders Off, Boards An Empty Plane After Bizarre Photo-Op With Freed Americans

The New Atlantis

A clueless President Joe Biden made a gaffe for the ages on Thursday night as he and Vice President Kamala Harris arrived on the tarmac to greet Americans recently freed from their years-long imprisonment overseas.

The arrival of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan was greeted with ecstasy by senior administration officials who coordinated the largest prison swap with Russia and Germany since the end of the Soviet regime. Whelan had been imprisoned since 2018 after Russian authorities convicted him of espionage-related charges, and Gershkovich had been serving a 16-year sentence since being convicted 17 months ago for similar false crimes. Both men were supposed to be welcomed with open arms by the president and vice president, a feel-good photo op that quickly went from bad to worse.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

A clip of the men’s arrival showed President Biden standing at the base of the plane shortly before the two men put their feet on American soil for the first time in years. Shortly before they disembarked from the aircraft, Biden wandered away to speak with a man and woman who appeared to be family members of one of the men. He kept his back turned to Gershkovich and Whelan as the rest of the crowd applauded their appearance, and even Vice President Harris managed to stay in character long enough to briefly hug the journalist.

WATCH:

What happened next defies explanation. Biden, seemingly curious to see something in the empty plane, left the ceremony to climb its stairs and go inside. Harris and the two Secret Service agents come together and watch the president disappear as if he were taking the private jet to the next leg of its nonexistent journey.

WATCH:

Despite the president’s bizarre behavior, administration officials had the opportunity to tout a long-sought foreign policy win that was kept in the limelight by the Journal’s continued coverage of its own reporter long after he faded from public consciousness. Two years earlier, President Biden celebrated the return of WNBA star Brittney Griner after she spent more than two years in a Russian detention center on a marijuana-related conviction. At least five Russian nationals were released as part of the deal which included some imprisoned in Germany. Among them were a millionaire implicated in a hacking scandal, a convicted murderer, and several men with ties to Russian intelligence services.

Former President Donald Trump ripped the White House’s deal on Thursday in an angry Truth Social post, claiming he would have accomplished the exchange without giving anything in return to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Are we releasing murderers, killers, or thugs? Just curious because we never make good deals, at anything, but especially hostage swaps. Our ‘negotiators’ are always an embarrassment to us! I got back many hostages, and gave the opposing Country NOTHING – and never any cash. To do so is bad precedent for the future. That’s the way it should be, or this situation will get worse and worse.”

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby disputed Trump’s characterization on CNN. “The previous administration also conducted prisoner exchanges. The previous administration also had to make tough decisions to get Americans home. … That’s what you have to do when you have people in harm’s way over there. You’ve got to make these tough decisions. It’s not easy.”

Dan Bongino STUNNED By Shocking Revelation From Trump Shooting: ‘How Do You Miss That?’

The New Atlantis

Conservative host Dan Bongino reacted to new footage of the Trump shooting on Thursday, telling viewers it was “implausible” that Secret Service agents missed intercepting the gunman according to new cell phone footage that recently emerged.

The Washington Examiner captured Bongino’s remarks about the shaky footage from former President Donald Trump’s July 13th rally in Butler, Pennsylvania where a 20-year-old gunman was able to fire off multiple rifle rounds and strike him once before being shot and killed. The former director of the Secret Service, who has since resigned, as well as the acting chief, have both stated that multiple hurdles existed to neutralizing Thomas Crooks before he opened fire. That doesn’t stack up against the evidence, Bongino argued.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

“If you’re looking at the three o’clock, how the hell do you miss this?!” Bongino said on his show as he played new footage from a counter-sniper as he located Crooks on a nearby rooftop. “This is a cell phone camera! This is not a zoom, high, telephoto, freaking lens used to film a Marvel movie! It’s a cellphone! You can see the guy clear as day! How did they miss this?!” Asking “What is left to defend?”, the former Secret Service agent said the agency is asking Americans to “believe the implausible” about just how impossible it was to try and stop Crooks from firing the first round.

Acting Secret Service Director Robert Rowe testified on Capitol Hill that the agency accepted culpability for the historic security failure but appeared to imitate his predecessor’s argument that local law enforcement were responsible for securing the perimeter of the rally. Earlier this week, Rowe was found to be “directly involved” in denying Trump’s team a full array of Secret Service resources, including additional counter-snipers for the rally. Several sources familiar with agency machinations told RealClearPolitics Rowe worked closely with former director Kimberly Cheatle to turn down requests by the Trump campaign for “magnetometers, additional agents, and other resources to help screen rallygoers at large, outdoor Trump campaign gatherings.” Specifically, Rowe ordered that Secret Service snipers not attend Trump rallies that were outside the driving distance of the agency’s Washington, D.C. headquarters. The drive time from the nation’s capital to Butler is approximately four and a half hours northwest, conceivably putting the rally location far outside Rowe’s radar.

On Wednesday FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate provided lawmakers an update on his investigation into the failed coordination between the Secret Service and local authorities admitting for the first time that the agency’s anti-drone technology suffered a meltdown that day. He also announced that a failed chain of communication prevented warnings about the gunman from reaching counter-snipers at least 30 seconds before the shooting began. “If we’d had that information they’d have been able to address it more quickly. It appears that that information was stuck or siloed in that state or local channel,” Rowe admitted before pointing to other ways in which the Secret Service did its best to partner with police in Butler, Pennsylvania that day. “It is troubling to me that we did not get that information as quickly as we should have. We didn’t know that there was this incident going on, and the only thing we had was, locals were working on an issue at the 3 o’clock, which was to the president’s right which was where the shot came. Nothing about the man on the roof, nothing about a man with a gun, none of that information ever made it over our net.”

Olympics Outrage Explodes After ANOTHER Biological Male Crushes Female Boxer

The New Atlantis

A second biological male boxer competing in the Paris Olympics female division decimated their opponent in the opening rounds of the match, reigniting widespread criticism of the event’s handling of transgender athletes one day after a similar boxing match incident.

Lin Yu-ting, 28, competing for Taiwan, punched Uzbek fighter Sitora Turdibekova to the point of tears on Friday after three rounds of a punishing assault that drew international headlines for its one-sidedness. Videos of the match circulating online show Lin delivering crushing blows to the face and body of Turdibekova who walked away after the third round with her head hanging in defeat. Lin was allowed to compete despite previous disqualifications by the International Boxing Association for failing their gender test. The two did not embrace or congratulate one another as Lin was declared the winner.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

WATCH:

Some observers saw the outcome as an inevitable conclusion of a decision by the International Olympic Committee to adopt a liberal inclusion policy that allowed both Lin and Imane Khelif of Algeria to compete despite being removed from competition by the IBA in 2023. Instead, the IOC rescinded the boxing authority’s governing status over the sport and adopted a more relaxed set of rules established by the IOC’s Paris 2024 Boxing Unit. IOC spokesperson Mark Adams deflected when asked about whether the committee bears any responsibility for the outcome of both matches. “I would just say that everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules. They are women in their passports,” he told the news outlet. “These athletes competed many times before for many years,” Adams added. “They didn’t just suddenly arrive.”

Women’s sports activists led a 24-hour campaign to draw attention to the plights of Turdibekova and Angela Carini, the female fighter who faced off against Khelif. Former champion collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines called for the X community to rally behind Carini in a Thursday post that generated over 150,000 reposts. She has since posted videos of Lin’s fight and reposted several other takes critical of the IOC for allowing both matches to go forward.

Both biologically male fighters were found to have XY chromosomes which the IBA argued gave them innate physical advantages over the field despite their transition to female genders since birth. The Khelif-Carini match ended in the 46th second after the Algerian fighter pummeled Carini so hard that her chin strap was dislodged, forcing her to retreat to her corner. Twenty minutes later, the Italian boxer appeared before reporters where she apologized to her nation for failing to last more than a minute. “I had entered the ring to fight,” Carini said in Italian after. “I didn’t give up, but a punch hurt too much and so I said enough. I go out with my head held high.”

Catherine Herridge Identifies BOMBSHELL From Secret Service Senate Hearing: ‘Incomprehensible’

The New Atlantis

Veteran Capitol Hill reporter Catherine Herridge singled out remarks by the acting chief of the Secret Service on Tuesday suggesting that the federal government’s ability to coordinate with local officials may be no better than it was before 9/11 despite billions of dollars spent to break down the information siloes that led to the attacks. She also identified an “incomprehensible” admission regarding a drone operated by the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks.

The bombshell disclosure came during Robert Rowe’s testimony before a joint Senate committee investigating how lapses in security allowed a deranged gunman to come within an inch of killing former President Donald Trump last month. The director affirmed a question by Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) asking if it’s accurate that local authorities had “no way of communicating with the Secret Service” or a counter-sniper for at least 30 seconds before they reported the gunman was on a nearby roof. “Would that be enough time to react prior to the firing of those shots?” the senator asked.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

“Senator, if we’d had that information they’d have been able to address it more quickly.

WATCH:

Before promising to break down the siloes which led to the July 13th attack, Rowe also disclosed that the Secret Service’s capability to intercept the gunman’s drone was more limited than previously known. ““Do you have the capacity to stop a weaponized drone?” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) asked him. “What I will tell you, sir, is that we have technical security measures that we utilize” but only a “limited” ability at “temporary sites” like the rally, Rowe replied. “What I can tell you is on this day the [counter-drone] system had technical difficulties and did not go operational until after 5 o’clock.” Crooks operated his drone between 3:50 pm and 5:01 pm.

Sen. Cornyn quickly connected the dots, asking if gunman Thomas Crooks would have been more successful if he had chosen to use a weaponized drone instead of his AR-15 rifle in the attempted assassination. “In this case, the shooter had a rifle, but somebody who wanted to kill a president or former president or candidate for president would not need a rifle. They could use a drone, correct?” he asked. “It is a potential threat vector,” Rowe replied.

WATCH:

Rowe has been linked to previous denials of additional security requested by the Trump campaign even after the Republican received death threats during his campaign for reelection. Last week former FBI Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned after placing blame on local authorities for the shooting, leaving her deputy in charge of producing an analysis on how security failed that day. Crooks, a recent high school graduate, has not been linked to a firm ideology, and conversations with those who knew him suggested he was anti-establishment in general despite being a registered Republican and recently donating to a progressive pro-Biden political action committee.

Two of the largest mainstream media outlets are slashing jobs and shuttering major departments in a bid to cut costs as viewers increasingly tune out from their liberal news coverage.

ABC and CNN, both of which have struggled with sluggish ratings in recent months, are putting some prime positions on the chopping block, according to The Hill and New York Post. ABC’s parent company Disney has ordered the news network’s “Good Morning America” show to find a stunning $19 million in savings however it can despite being one of its top-rated programs. That figure is up from an originally projected need of $17 million in savings and must be completed by the end of the fiscal quarter on September 30th, according to insiders who spoke with the Post.

In addition, Disney is looking to pare back its staff at other cable networks NatGeo and Freeform by a combined 140 positions. The cuts may come as a slap in the face to low-level employees; sources say the eight-figure salaries of ABC’s top reporters — including Robin Roberts, Michael Strahan and George Stephanopoulos — aren’t expected to be touched. Instead, it’s behind-the-scenes bookers and producers who will be let go. “They all have contracts, so there will be no cut at that level,” a former ABC News exec said of the hosts, who are estimated to make between $17 million and $18 million each. “But they will have to cut jobs.”

Over at CNN, the once “most trusted name in news” will be winding down its entire opinion section. One opinion editor announcing the news wished his former colleagues the best and wrote down their hope that the team’s “paths cross elsewhere,” — a bittersweet farewell that portends more job cuts. “Just a quick note to let you know that unfortunately CNN has decided to shut down the opinion section,” an opinion editor sent in an email obtained by The Hill. “I hope our paths cross elsewhere!” CNN confirmed the shuttering of the section but did not elaborate on rumors of staff reductions. “We did make the decision at the beginning of the month to sunset the opinion vertical on CNN.com; as a result, we will no longer have a standalone Opinion section,” a spokesperson said in the statement.

Some of the CNN opinion pages’ most recent think pieces include hot takes on inclusivity at the Paris Olympics and a column titled “Project 2025 is coming for our kids, too” by Veronica Goodman, a progressive activist. CNN CEO Mark Thompson has asked his team to look for savings amid a devastating slump in ratings that has even included slashes to the seven-figure salaries of its top anchors and reporters. Earlier this month the network announced plans to lay off at least 100 employees and didn’t rule out the possibility of further cuts. Thompson, in a memo sent to staff on Wednesday, outlined his plan to shave down the company’s payroll, mostly through a merger of the television newsgathering and digital news divisions. The shift away from traditional TV will be painful, he added. “We recognize its potentially enormous impact on the individuals affected,” Thompson wrote to his 4,000 employees worldwide. He declined to provide the Journal with further details about his shift to digital but said the move would “be significantly built out of CNN.com.”

In May the network reported its lowest viewership levels in decades. Between May 13th and 19th, CNN nabbed an average of 83,000 viewers in the crucial 25-54 age demographic between 8 and 11 p.m., the lowest level seen in over 30 years. Across all demos, the network lagged far behind its peers in a news ratings race it no longer appears qualified to run. In the past period, CNN garnered 494,000 viewers compared to 2 million for Fox and 1.1 million for MSNBC. Thompson at the time attributed the sagging ratings to a holdover effect as his CNN transitions away from traditional news and directs more of its focus to pop culture topics.
