Economy could prove decisive factor in election, Sarah Bedford argues

A volatile economy could prove to be the decisive factor in the November presidential election, Sarah Bedford argued.

In an appearance on Fox News’s Your World with Neil Cavuto, Bedford agreed with Cavuto’s assessment that current market volatility could see a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis. Such a situation could prove exceedingly difficult for Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I think the past couple of months, we’ve seen a lot of uncertainty in the race from things that have nothing to do with the economy, Joe Biden’s age, the fact that Donald Trump has a brand new opponent, but the fundamentals of the race are still centered around the economy, around voters’ concerns about inflation and the affordability of their lives,” she said. “That’s difficult for Kamala Harris, right?”

Bedford said the Harris honeymoon period is unlikely to last and the race will soon revert to one based on policy issues.

“Because once the excitement of her new candidacy starts to die down, this is still a race where voters are largely dissatisfied with the incumbent administration,” she said. “It’s a change election because she’s the vice president; she doesn’t represent change any way on the number one issue for voters, which is still the economy.”

Harris’s strategy since launching her campaign last week has largely been to focus on hot-button Democratic issues, such as abortion, LGBT rights, Project 2025, and former President Donald Trump’s alleged threats to democracy. Bedford argued that this could backfire if voters’ concerns about the economy don’t start to take center focus.

“And you know, we don’t hear Kamala Harris speaking directly to voters fears about inflation,” she said. “She wants to make this race a referendum on Donald Trump. And the problem with that, for her, is that voters largely have positive memories of the economy under Donald Trump, again, their No. 1 issue that they’re voting on. Things were overall just better — quality of life, better, under the Trump administration. So if the focus is on Trump’s fitness for office, that’s not necessarily a good thing for Democrats.”

Harris has led a Democratic recovery in the polls, suffered after concerns over President Joe Biden’s decline. After the president dropped out and Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee, polls have the two almost evenly split.

Lloyd Austin revokes plea agreement for 9/11 mastermind, fires official in charge of military commissions

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revoked the plea agreements for the 9/11 terrorist attack mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two others, and relieved the official in charge of military courts in Guantanamo Bay.

The move puts the possibility of the death penalty back on the table for the trio. It was announced in a memorandum on Friday. In justifying his decision, Lloyd said that the severity of the matter meant that the decision to accept a plea deal should rest with him alone.

“I have determined that, in light of the significance of the decision to enter into pre-trial agreements with the accused in the above-referenced case, responsibility for such a decision should rest with me as the superior convening authority under the Military Commissions Act of 2009,” he wrote. “Effective immediately, I hereby withdraw your authority in the above-referenced case to enter into a pre-trial agreement and reserve such authority to myself.”

On Wednesday, the Department of Defense reached a plea deal with Mohammed, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Ramzi Bin al Shibh, three men accused of planning the attacks and murdering nearly 3,000 people. The details of the deal weren’t made public.

The deal was met with outrage from Republicans, prompting the White House to distance itself from the decision.

“We had no role in that process,” national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Thursday. “The president had no role. The vice president had no role. I had no role. The White House had no role.”

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) demanded further information about the decision in a letter to President Joe Biden earlier on Friday, criticizing the alleged lack of transparency in the process.

“The specific terms of the pre-trial agreements remain undisclosed to the public or families of the victims,” he wrote. “You are allowing these terrorists to avoid the death penalty, signaling to our enemies that the United States is reluctant to pursue full justice against those who attack our nation.”

9/11 Justice, which represents families of the victims of the attacks, said they were “astounded and deeply frustrated that our families were not consulted or even notified in advance of the plea deal or its subsequent revocation.”

President Brett Eagleton said: “These monsters need to be forced to share every piece of information they have about the attacks and be held fully accountable for the murder of our loved ones. It’s not just about punishment, it’s about uncovering the full truth.”

Speculation Josh Shapiro is Kamala Harris’s veep pick reaches fever pitch with video from Philadelphia mayor

A video from Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker supporting Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) as Vice President Kamala Harris’s pick for running mate has reinforced speculation that her decision has already been made.

“We’re getting behind Kamala Harris for president and Josh Shapiro for vice president,” various speakers said in the video.

The video endorses Shapiro as her pick for various reasons, including his pro-labor and “progressive” policies, and only suggests he is Harris’s running mate towards the end of the video. Some online speculated this was a leak that was supposed to be published only after he was announced on Monday, but the video could just be arguing Harris should choose Shapiro, not that she already has. Further, neither Harris nor the Democratic National Committee paid for it.

As of writing, the video has been up for several hours and is pinned to the top of Parker’s X page.

“Proud to be back with so many leaders from across our region supporting @KamalaHarris
for President and @JoshShapiroPA for VP! We are One CITY, One REGION, and ONE Commonwealth United!” she captioned the video.

The video features footage from a rally of several labor leaders advocating Shapiro to be Harris’s running mate. It is almost identical to a previous video released by Parker last week, with participants saying Shapiro is running as Harris’s vice president tacked on in the newest version.

“This isn’t a leak. It’s a video compiled from a press conference last week of PA electeds campaigning to get Shapiro selected as the VP pick,” Democratic strategist Walid Shahid said.

Philadelphia Magazine writer Ernest Owens said in X the video was indeed a leak and has caused a “firestorm” behind the scenes.

Shapiro is one of several leading candidates to be Harris’s running mate. She is set to announce her pick sometime ahead of a joint rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Hunter Biden sentencing set for November

Hunter Biden’s sentencing for his felony gun case is set for Nov. 13.

Biden made history in June, becoming the first son of a sitting president to be criminally convicted over three charges related to a 2018 gun purchase. He was convicted of lying on a federal form about his drug use to purchase a firearm, submitting a false statement into a federal record, and unlawfully possessing the firearm for 11 days.

He will report to a Wilmington, Delaware, courthouse Wednesday, Nov. 13, for his sentencing, eight days after the presidential election.

The court filing laying out the court date included further instructions regarding logistics, such as when to submit the presentence report and what to communicate with the probation officer.

Biden’s legal troubles didn’t end with the gun trial, however. He will head to court next month over a federal tax evasion trial in California, where he faces six felony and three misdemeanor charges.

Judge Mark Scarsi has scheduled a hearing for Aug. 21 to review the various requests about what evidence and testimony to permit at trial, while the trial itself is set to begin on Sept. 9.

Virginia attorney general demands answers about suspected ‘dummy accounts’ donating to Democrats

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares demanded answers about suspicious donor activity on ActBlue, a Democratic political action committee.

In July, conservative activists sounded the alarm on suspicious donations made through ActBlue, including some cases in which single donors made tens of thousands of separate donations worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Miyares said Monday that he was aware of the allegations and sent a letter to ActBlue demanding answers Friday.

In the letter, he said the organization has been accused of “fraudulent, deceptive, and/or otherwise illegal activities in the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or have aided and abetted others in doing so,” pointing to instances of “hundreds of thousands of dollars of contributions through individual donors in the Commonwealth in volumes that are facially implausible and appear suspicious.”

“Taken together, these circumstances appear to indicate that contributions via ActBlue are being made from fictional donors or dummy accounts, or that information reported by or through ActBlue may be fraudulent,” Miyares wrote. “Alternatively, these circumstances may indicate that contributions via ActBlue are being made without the reported donors’ consent or awareness. Accordingly, these contributions and ActBlue’s facilitation thereof may violate multiple provisions of Virginia charitable and criminal law.”

Miyares requested that ActBlue send his office a detailed description of the group’s “processes and procedures for verifying the legitimacy and accuracy of donor and contribution information as well as the processes and procedures used in verifying information reported to regulatory bodies.”

“Given the seriousness of these allegations, I expect to receive your substantive response by August 12, 2024,” he added.

Virginia was one of several states where suspicious donations were uncovered.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) sounded the alarm over possible fraud from ActBlue in April 2023, demanding an investigation from the Federal Electoral Commission.

“It should come as no surprise that ActBlue serves as a vessel for fraud, considering the intentional lack of security engrained within their donation processes and systems,” he said.

In the letter, he said the organization has been accused of “fraudulent, deceptive, and/or otherwise illegal activities in the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or have aided and abetted others in doing so,” pointing to instances of “hundreds of thousands of dollars of contributions through individual donors in the Commonwealth in volumes that are facially implausible and appear suspicious.” “Taken together, these circumstances appear to indicate that contributions via ActBlue are being made from fictional donors or dummy accounts, or that information reported by or through ActBlue may be fraudulent,” Miyares wrote. “Alternatively, these circumstances may indicate that contributions via ActBlue are being made without the reported donors’ consent or awareness. Accordingly, these contributions and ActBlue’s facilitation thereof may violate multiple provisions of Virginia charitable and criminal law.” Miyares requested that ActBlue send his office a detailed description of the group’s “processes and procedures for verifying the legitimacy and accuracy of donor and contribution information as well as the processes and procedures used in verifying information reported to regulatory bodies.” “Given the seriousness of these allegations, I expect to receive your substantive response by August 12, 2024,” he added. Trump insiders blaming Kellyanne Conway for bad press around JD Vance: Report

Trump’s inner circle is blaming GOP strategist Kellyanne Conway for the bad press around Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).

In interviews with 20 Trump campaign staffers, allies, confidants, and advisers, with the Bulwark, more than a dozen people, unprompted, blamed Conway for the negative press coverage of Vance. They believe Conway is leaking damaging information to the press, portraying Trumpworld as questioning the pick of Vance. The rumors have reached, and are apparently believed by, Vance and his biggest ally in Trump’s camp, Donald Trump Jr.

“He’s p****d off about it. He knows it’s her,” a Donald Trump Jr. confidant told the outlet.

A confidant of former President Donald Trump said attacks against Vance from within the ranks of Trumpworld were “100% from Kellyanne.”

Conway was a leading figure in advocating against Vance as a running mate for the former president. She preferred Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) or Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), reportedly saying at a Fox News meeting before the pick that the former president would only “pick Vance over my dead body.”

Republican strategist Ryan Girdusky, citing the article, characterized Conway’s moves as a “smear effort” against Vance.

Conway denied the allegations in an interview with the Bulwark, deriding the dozen sources as “gossip girls” and jealous “ankle biters.”

“When it comes to concerned people questioning the vetting or selection of JD Vance, the calls are coming in, not going out,” she said. “I’m not calling them and saying this is bad. People are asking me. They’re not just asking me. They’re asking lots of people.”

The accusations are a departure from an unusually stable Trump campaign, which the report credits to the friendship of the leading triumvirate — Trump campaign senior advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita and strategist Tony Fabrizio. The former president’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns were plagued by leadership infighting and frequent leaks.

The insiders speaking with the outlet described the current period as more stressful than the Republican primary, the former president’s legal troubles, and even the assassination attempt.

The Trump campaign was put on the defensive for the first time since the June 27 debate after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee. She has since narrowed the polling gap with the former president.

Ayatollah Khamenei issues order to strike Israel directly: Report

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued an order to strike Israel directly in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, according to a report.

Three Iranian officials, including two members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, told the New York Times the order was issued after an emergency meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council on Wednesday. The reported order comes as the Iranian government publicly vowed retaliation after the head of one of its allies was killed in the heart of its capital.

However, the exact nature of the attack is still unclear and possibly not even decided yet. The Iranian officials said multiple options are being considered, including missile and drone strikes against military targets in Tel Aviv and Haifa. Another option being considered is a coordinated attack from Iran, Yemen, Syria, and Iraq.

The officials also said Iran would make a point not to hit civilian targets, likely to avoid escalation.

Khamenei also told the armed forces to prepare for a potential response from Israel or even the United States, anticipating a possible expansion of the war.

The description of the retaliation options sounds similar to that undertaken by Iran in April in response to the assassination of an IRGC leader and other officers in a Damascus air strike.

In April, Iran launched its first-ever direct missile attack against Israel, though most of the missiles were intercepted and Israel suffered only minor casualties and damage.

Hezbollah, a close ally of Iran based in Lebanon, is also likely planning retaliation for the assassination of Fuad Shukr, a senior commander who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. Iran and the group could coordinate their response to raise their chances of breaching Israel’s vaunted missile defense system.

Harris to hold rally with VP pick Tuesday before they blitz swing states

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to unveil her running mate before a joint rally on Tuesday.

Since launching her campaign last week, speculation has swirled as to who Harris will pick as her vice president, with many strategists believing it will be a centrist Democratic governor. She is set to unveil her pick shortly before a joint Philadelphia rally next week, according to Politico.

After the Philadelphia kickoff rally, the two will hold rallies in Wisconsin, Detroit, Raleigh, North Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Phoenix, and Las Vegas.

“Next week, Vice President Harris and her future running mate will crisscross the country together to campaign to the voters who will decide this election. As a strong reminder, and as she said today, Vice President Harris has made no decision on a running mate,” the Harris campaign said in a statement.

The choice of Philadelphia as the launch of the Democratic duo may hint as to who she is leaning toward, however, as it will be in Gov. Josh Shapiro’s (D-PA) own state.

Shapiro has been campaigning for Harris at several stops, taking shots at former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).

Other contenders for the running mate spot include Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Govs. Andy Beshear (D-KY) and Tim Walz (D-MN), and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Harris has narrowed the gap with Trump in polling after Trump achieved record heights against President Joe Biden following the latter’s shaky debate performance on June 27. The president finally stepped aside under immense pressure from allies last week, making Harris the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Vance says he is the product of ‘strong women’ after ‘childless cat ladies’ criticism

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) said he is the product of “strong women,” amid criticism from Democrats over past derivative remarks he made about “childless cat women.”

At a rally in Reno, Nevada, Vance touched on his upbringing, mainly by his grandma. He used the story to implicitly counter allegations of sexism leveled by Democrats, who took issue with past comments he made about “childless cat women.”

“Now some of you know my story, and some of you don’t, but I grew up in a poor family,” he said. “I was raised by my grandmother. I called her Mamaw.”

“And I’ve been the beneficiary, I have to say, of a number of strong women in my life, especially my beautiful wife,” Vance added.

“But I’ve lived the American dream because of those strong women, especially my grandmother,” he continued. “I was able to go and enlist in the Marine Corps, and go to school, and get a good job, and become a husband and father and all the things that I’ve dreamed of. In fact, I’m living it right now, getting to spend this wonderful evening with you fine people.”

In a 2021 appearance on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show, Vance denounced “childless cat ladies” running the United States who “want to make the rest of the country miserable, too,” referring to Vice President Kamala Harris and other top Democrats.

Speaking with Fox News’s Trey Gowdy on Sunday night, the vice presidential candidate attempted to clarify his remarks, alleging Democrats such as Harris have become “anti-child and anti-family.”

“If you look at the full context of what I said, it’s very clear the Democrats have tried to take this thing out of context and blow it out of proportion, which is what they always do, Trey, because they don’t have an agenda to run on themselves,” Vance said. He then attempted to contrast Republicans with Democrats while saying it’s important for the country to be “pro-family.”

“Of course, for a whole host of reasons, it’s not going to work out for some people,” he said, referring to people without children. “We should pray for those people and, of course, have sympathy for them. I still think that means we should be pro-family, generally speaking, as a party, and I think that our country has become particularly hard for parents, especially under the policies of Kamala Harris.”

Kamala Harris honeymoon polling gives her a boost in every swing state

Vice President Kamala Harris received a honeymoon polling boost, giving her higher shares in every swing state.

By early July, former President Donald Trump had a major lead over President Joe Biden in every swing state, sending panic throughout the Democratic ranks. This panic led to pressure that forced Biden out of the race, replacing him with Harris. Following a week of positive press coverage, Harris experienced a honeymoon bump in the polls, closing or even surpassing Trump’s lead in several swing states, according to a recent Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll.

The new poll, taken from July 24 through 28, found Harris was leading in Arizona by two points; in Nevada by two points; in Wisconsin by two points, and in Michigan by 11 points. Trump was up by four points in Pennsylvania and two points in North Carolina, and the two were tied in Georgia.

The poll surveyed 4,973 registered voters in seven swing states, with differing sample sizes in each, including 804 in Arizona, 799 in Georgia, 706 in Michigan, 454 in Nevada, 706 in North Carolina, 804 in Pennsylvania, and 700 in Wisconsin.

Some Republican figures, including pollster Richard Baris and GOP strategist Ryan Girdusky, criticized the poll results.

“It’s bad methodology. Small samples. Wild swings and wide margins between similar states aren’t real,” Baris argued.

Nevertheless, the poll reflects the improving chances of Harris following the official launch of her campaign. While still trailing Trump in most polls, she has largely closed the significant gap that had formed after Biden’s shaky debate performance on June 27.
