Why the US chip manufacturing industry has struggled to ramp up in Arizona

Cultural clashes between Taiwanese managers and American workers are hindering efforts to expand chip manufacturing into the United States.

The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is one of the world’s most valuable companies, producing unfathomable numbers of advanced computer chips the modern world relies on. Most of them are produced in a single factory in Taiwan, something the company is seeking to change. In May 2020, TSMC announced plans to open two plants on the outskirts of Phoenix. Four years later, that plan has proved more difficult than expected, largely due to a culture clash between Taiwanese managers and American workers.

“We keep reminding ourselves that just because we are doing quite well in Taiwan doesn’t mean that we can actually bring the Taiwan practice here,” Richard Liu, the director of employee communications and relations at the site, told the New York Times.

According to the outlet’s interviews with 12 TSMC employees and executives, cultural differences in work expectations have led to frustrations among both Taiwanese and American employees. The former expect much more vigorous working conditions than the latter are willing to tolerate.

The interviewees reported several occasions when employees quit over disagreements about work expectations, especially expectations to work outside of normal hours. Taiwanese managers sometimes call employees into work in the middle of the night for work emergencies.

TSMC has struggled to handle growing tensions, leading to the company giving managers communication training. The frequency and size of meetings have been reduced after some workers complained about their unnecessary nature.

The TSMC’s working culture is so intense that it has faced similar issues in two other countries it is attempting to expand into, renowned for their vigorous working cultures: Japan and Germany.

In Phoenix, more than half of the 2,200 workers were imported from Taiwan, despite the company’s pledge to create 6,000 jobs. It plans to move this ratio toward more local hires after the completion of the factory, according to the New York Times.

“We want to make this site a successful site and a sustainable site,” Liu said. “Sustainable means that we cannot keep relying on Taiwan sending people here.”

To make that sustainable future a reality, there has been a push to improve and expand engineering programs at local colleges, and universities.

Besides beefing up electrical engineering programs, schools are also partnering with TSMC through apprenticeships and internships to expose students to the job and the culture of working in the new tech environment.

Schools have also invested in building their own “clean rooms” — incredibly complex, sealed-off, sterile areas where chips are manufactured under stringent conditions. The new spotless environments are a departure from the facilities commonly associated with American manufacturing.

“We have a generation of students whose parents have never once stepped foot into an advanced manufacturing factory,” Scott Spurgeon, the Phoenix center’s superintendent, told the outlet. “Their concept of that is still much like the old mom-and-pop manufacturing where you show up every day and come out with dirty clothes and dirty hands.”

TSMC has received billions of dollars from the Biden administration, which is seeking to boost the U.S. semiconductor industry. The company itself has pledged $65 billion for the project.

The start date for production has been pushed back amid several obstacles — the first plant is expected to begin production in the first half of 2025, while the second is not expected to begin production until 2027 or 2028.

Pelosi punts responsibility for role in Biden ouster: ‘I won’t answer that question’

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) isn’t taking the credit or the blame for being a key factor in pushing President Joe Biden out of the 2024 race.

Pelosi is widely believed to have been one of the deciding figures in Biden’s decision to drop out of the race despite his repeated insistence he had no plans to withdraw. But while she implicitly acknowledged her leading role in the affair, speaking with a small group of reporters as part of a book tour, she refused to admit she ever directly asked Biden to drop out, lest former President Donald Trump win, according to the Washington Post.

“I won’t answer that question,” she said when asked if she ever directly told Biden he needed to drop out or Trump would win.

Pelosi said she was pushed to nudge Biden to drop out after seeing no path to victory.

“Now, I was really asking for a better campaign,” she said. “We did not have a campaign that was on the path to victory. Members knew that in their districts.”

Those members, possibly “hundreds,” calling her to express their concerns about winning in November were reportedly at the center of a tense conversation between the former speaker and the president.

She told reporters that accounts of her getting into a fight with Biden about polling and demanding Mike Donilon, a top adviser, on the phone to talk instead of the president never happened.

More than wanting Biden to remain in the White House, Pelosi appears to have preferred seeing another figurehead if it meant a defeat for Trump.

“My goal in life was that that man would never set foot in the White House again,” she said, referring to Trump. She predicted “an unfolding of events that were just putting rose petals in front of him to go there.”

Overall, the former House speaker declined to give any specifics about her conversations with Biden, with whom she has been friendly for 40 years.

“So, we are friends for a very long time. I love him so much. We pray together. I cry over it, I lose sleep over it and the rest, but that’s what evolved,” Pelosi said.

She added that the two haven’t spoken since shortly before he stepped down as the Democratic nominee.

However, Pelosi has attempted to remain in Biden’s good graces since his ousting and recently suggested that his face should be added to Mount Rushmore.

Los Angeles resident passed over in US-Russia prisoner swap pleads guilty to treason

A Russian-American ballerina pleaded guilty to treason in a Russian court after being passed over in a recent major prisoner swap.

Ksenia Khavana, also known as Ksenia Karelina, was arrested while visiting Russia in January on treason charges. She pleaded guilty on Wednesday, according to multiple Russian sources. Her lawyer, Mikhail Mushailov, told RIA Novosti that her verdict would be announced tomorrow, though other sources speculated it would come at a later date.

“She admits her guilt, yes,” he said.

She faces up to 20 years in prison, according to the Moscow Times.

U.S. Consul General Stuart Wilson attended the hearing to show his support, according to SOTAvision.

The outlet also reported that the judge presiding over the case was the same who oversaw the espionage trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

She was accused of “proactively” raising funds “subsequently used to purchase tactical medicine, equipment, weapons, and ammunition by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”

Khavana disputed the charges, claiming she was only donating funds to humanitarian groups. She once donated $51.80 to the New York-based nonprofit organization Razom. It’s unknown if the charges stem from this donation.

David Axelrod says Trump ‘unsettled’ by ‘transformation’ of Democrats’ ticket

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod said the choice of Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate has transformed the presidential race to the detriment of former President Donald Trump.

In a roundtable appearance on CNN’s The Source, Axelrod praised the performance of Harris and Walz in their first joint campaign appearance.

“Such an interesting transformation has happened,” he said. “Suddenly, Donald Trump feels like the embattled incumbent. I mean, that’s the way he’s behaving. And they are presenting themselves as the turn-the-page candidates. And that’s the field that we got tonight.”

He added that Walz specifically “delivered some heavy blows” against Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) but with “that kind of gentle humor that actually lands well.”

Walz made fun of Vance during his and Harris’s Tuesday rally by alluding to a crude sexual joke about the Ohio Republican, which was based on a doctored page from his memoirs.

Axelrod suggested that Trump was being knocked off balance by the change in the Democratic ticket.

“And I have to say, Trump is getting — he’s unsettled by this change in the environment. You can see it in his tweets and so on,” he said. “And there is a kind of grinding quality to the Trump campaign right now that plays very badly against what you saw tonight, which was very joyful and positive. And there was this feeling of possibility.”

On Sunday, Axelrod warned that Democrats were experiencing “irrational exuberance” over Harris and that Trump still held the upper hand.

“It’s absolutely Trump’s race to lose right now,” Axelrod said on CNN Newsroom. “He is ahead. And he is ahead in most of the battleground states. They’re close. They can be won by either candidate.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) predicted that Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) can win “pretty big” in November if they stick to progressive stances on economic issues.

In an appearance on CNN’s The Source, Sanders praised Harris and Walz and said they could win by a large margin if they followed a certain path.

After listing several progressive policy proposals, including expanding Medicare and Social Security and raising taxes on the wealthy, the Vermont socialist said such policies are supported by over 70% of the country.

“So I think to the degree that the vice president and the governor can stay focused on economic issues that benefit working people, demand that the billionaire class are paying their fair share of taxes. You know what? I think they’re going to not only win — I think they have a chance to win pretty big,” he said.

Sanders praised Walz as a potential running mate days before the decision was made, arguing that he would best represent the working class.

“I am very impressed by Walz,” Sanders said. “I think you have an excellent governor who understands the needs of working families, so I hope very much that the vice president selects a running mate who will speak up and take on powerful corporate interests, and I think Tim Walz is somebody who could do that.”

After losing the 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries, Sanders has rallied behind the Democratic ticket, becoming a major booster of President Joe Biden and now Harris.

Nine killed, including six children, after vehicle plunges into Florida canal

Nine people were killed, including six children, and one wounded when a vehicle plunged into a western Palm Beach, Florida, canal.

The sole survivor, passenger Jorden Hall, 26, was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries, according to an accident report obtained by Fox 29. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that four people were pronounced dead on the scene, while another five were rushed to the hospital where they died soon after.

The three dead adults were identified as Pamela Wiggins, 56, Leiana Alyse Hall, 30, and Anyia Monique Lee Tucker, 21. The six children were ages 14, 8, 5, 5, 3, and 1.

Due to unspecified reasons, the SUV on Monday failed to clear a sharp turn and crashed through a guardrail, flipped over, and plunged into a canal at around 7:30 p.m. No one in the vehicle was utilizing “safety equipment” at the time of the crash.

AOC paints Left and Walz as ‘normal’ compared to ‘weird’ Trump-Vance ticket

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) marketed progressive Democrats and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) as “normal” in contrast to the “creepy” ticket of former President Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).

In an Instagram livestream, Ocasio-Cortez reaffirmed her support for Walz, portraying Vice President Kamala Harris’s selection of him as a uniting moment. She contrasted the Harris-Walz ticket with that of Trump-Vance, which she portrayed as “weird” and “creepy.”

“And I think the two of them together really show what America is actually about and what our values actually are, and Trump and J.D. Vance are, like, the creepiest people you’ve ever met in your life,” she said. “Like, truly, I think, like, I mean, where do we even start with J.D. Vance? Like, he’s weirdly obsessed with women’s bodies and reproductive systems.”

In a line consistent with that of most Democrats but a departure from her standard progressive iconoclastic approach, the New York Democrat pitched the 2024 presidential ticket as a return to normalcy.

“They are creepily obsessed with LGBT people like nobody. I don’t think normal people are this concerned with what’s going on in other people’s situations, you know, like, kind of, keep your hands to yourself, right? They don’t know how to do that. And we’re here to kind of make things normal,” Ocasio-Cortez said of Trump and Vance.

Ocasio-Cortez was, however, quick to clarify that it was only a certain kind of normalcy, stressing the need for continuing “progress.”

“But not just normal. Actually to try to commit to a policy agenda that … ensures that we make progress, and I think that we really want to try to make that part of our conversation,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

She portrayed her kind of politics as a true normalcy, arguing that the establishment Democrats were an aberration from the historic Democratic Party.

“Anyways, what I was going to say is that I am looking forward to a Democratic Party that is moving past the kind of ’90s-era triangulation politics and moving and getting back to our roots of being FDR Democrats, of being populist working-class labor Democrats, with the added integration of a modern intersectional lens,” Ocasio-Cortez said, “that is aware of racial rights, that is aware of women’s rights, that’s aware of and fights for civil and LGBT rights and integrates the material identity values, not just superficial.”

When reached for comment, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung directed the Washington Examiner to a statement from Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt, in which she said, “It’s no surprise that San Francisco Liberal Kamala Harris wants West Coast wannabe Tim Walz as her running-mate – Walz has spent his governorship trying to reshape Minnesota in the image of the Golden State.”

“While Walz pretends to support Americans in the Heartland, when the cameras are off, he believes that rural America is ‘mostly cows and rocks’. From proposing his own carbon-free agenda, to suggesting stricter emission standards for gas-powered cars, and embracing policies to allow convicted felons to vote, Walz is obsessed with spreading California’s dangerously liberal agenda far and wide,” she added. “If Walz won’t tell voters the truth, we will: just like Kamala Harris, Tim Walz is a dangerously liberal extremist, and the Harris-Walz California dream is every American’s nightmare.”

Trump deploys Vance to dog Harris and her VP pick on campaign trail

Former President Donald Trump is sending Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as an attack dog against Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate on the campaign trail.

Vance, aiming to take the charge against Harris’s running mate, is set to make appearances in parallel with the Democratic candidates for three days across four battleground states, Politico reported. This will start with an event in Philadelphia on Tuesday, which corresponds with the first joint rally by Harris and her soon-to-be-announced running mate.

A person familiar with the matter said Vance’s events will have sections in which he speaks with the media, making them events rather than rallies. “Everyday Americans” affected by the Biden administration will take center stage.

Vance is expected to focus his attacks on three crucial elements of Harris’s record — immigration, crime, and the economy — three topics consistently ranked as some of voters’ biggest concerns.

After beginning in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Vance will continue on Wednesday to Detroit and Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and then Raleigh, North Carolina, on Thursday.

After a rough start as Trump’s running mate, characterized by blistering media coverage and wavering from some Republican allies, the Ohio Republican has sought to be an aggressive campaigner for the Republican ticket, holding events across the country and participating in media appearances. In the coming weeks, he plans to appear in media outlets that are more hostile to the Trump campaign.

Harris is set to announce her running mate sometime before her Tuesday rally, with top contenders including Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Govs. Andy Beshear (D-KY), Josh Shapiro (D-PA), and Tim Walz (D-MN), and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The rally will be occurring in Shapiro’s home state.

Biden rates Josh Shapiro highly but thinks Tim Walz is a ‘blast’

President Joe Biden has reportedly touched on Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate prospects, expressing preferences for Govs. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) and Tim Walz (D-MN).

Biden has mostly remained mum on who he favors in the vice presidential sweepstakes, telling reporters on Friday, “I’ll let [Harris] work that out.” He has shown clear favorites behind the scenes, however, with a senior adviser telling CNN that his favorites are Shapiro and Walz.

Biden is a “big fan of Shapiro’s,” the adviser said, partially due to his help during the 2020 election, and his role in handing the Democratic Party victories in the key swing state. He successfully defended the state in 19 lawsuits before the election and over 20 filed after the Nov. 3 Election Day, guarding Biden’s victory in the state.

Despite his appreciation for Shapiro, however, the senior adviser suggested that he likes Walz even better.

“He’s just a blast,” the adviser said.

He pointed to a January infrastructure event in Wisconsin, where Walz and Biden mingled with voters over beers.

“Biden was in the best mood ever,” the adviser suggested and recalled others joking that the Minnesota governor should be brought around more often “because he always put him in such a great mood.”

The one other candidate mentioned was Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), whom Biden isn’t close with personally but reportedly appreciates.

Harris is set to choose her running mate ahead of a Philadelphia rally on Tuesday. The top contenders are expected to face their final interviews over the weekend. In addition to the candidates mentioned by the Biden adviser, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) are seen as leading candidates.

Harris is set to choose her running mate ahead of a Philadelphia rally on Tuesday. The top contenders are expected to face their final interviews over the weekend. In addition to the candidates mentioned by the Biden adviser, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) are seen as leading candidates.

, President Joe Biden has reportedly touched on Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate prospects, expressing preferences for Govs. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta) Biden is a “big fan of Shapiro’s,” the adviser said, partially due to his help during the 2020 election, and his role in handing the Democratic Party victories in the key swing state. “Biden was in the best mood ever,” the adviser suggested and recalled others joking that the Minnesota governor should be brought around more often “because he always put him in such a great mood.” CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER The one other candidate mentioned was Sen. Kamala Harris came within 20 feet of pipe bomb on Jan. 6, report finds

Vice President Kamala Harris came within 20 feet of a pipe bomb at the Democratic National Committee headquarters on Jan. 6, 2021.

The Secret Service released an 81-page report on its response to the Jan. 6 riot, detailing its preparations and actions around the event. A still-unidentified individual placed pipe bombs outside the DNC and Republican National Committee headquarters the night before. The bombs went unnoticed by the Secret Service canine unit sent to clear the premises before her arrival.

Harris traveled from the Capitol to the DNC headquarters shortly before noon, hours before the riot. According to the report, she got within 20 feet of the pipe bomb while entering the headquarters through a ramp. She remained in the building for one hour and 40 minutes.

The report added that the Secret Service had not used all of the explosive detection tactics and measures for its sweep of the DNC headquarters due to a lack of adequate policies for the president and vice president-elect. The pipe bomb was ultimately discovered by two plainclothes U.S. Capitol Police officers.

“Two USCP plainclothes agents who were searching the DNC building after a similar device was discovered at the Republican National Committee building ultimately discovered the pipe bomb 1 hour and 40 minutes after the Vice President-elect’s arrival,” the report read. “The two USCP agents notified the Secret Service, who then evacuated the Vice President-elect from the DNC building.”

The two pipe bombs didn’t detonate but have puzzled investigators and observers since. Despite an extensive investigation, no suspects have been identified.

“Over the past three years, a dedicated team of FBI agents, analysts, data scientists, and law enforcement partners has worked thousands of hours conducting interviews, reviewing physical and digital evidence, and assessing tips from the public about who may have placed pipe bombs on Capitol Hill,” David Sundberg, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, said in a January statement.

Surveillance footage showed an individual wearing baggy clothes, a hoodie, and a mask placing the bombs outside the headquarters the night before. The FBI is offering a $500,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
