New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is heading to Washington on Friday for his first sit-down with President Donald Trump, a routine White House ritual for the incoming boss of America’s largest city.
Mamdani says he’s marching into the meeting with three big priorities for New Yorkers: public safety, economic security, and “the affordability agenda that over 1 million New Yorkers voted for.”
Public safety has been his opening drumbeat. On Wednesday, he confirmed NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch will stay on as the city’s top cop. The pair made their first public appearance together after striking that deal, with Tisch walking Mamdani through the NYPD’s memorial honoring fallen officers.
Gov. Kathy Hochul, who pushed Mamdani to stick with Tisch, argued the move strengthens the city’s case to the Trump administration that New York has things under control and does not need federal backup like the National Guard.
In an exclusive interview with PIX11 News anchor Dan Mannarino, Mamdani praised Tisch for driving crime down and stabilizing the number of uniformed officers.
“I’ve said time and again that the amount we had budgeted for through the course of this campaign, that’s the amount we need in New York City. And, frankly, the issue we’re facing is not the question of how many more officers we’ll hire… but how many officers we’ll be able to keep,” Mamdani said.

He argued that the burden of dealing with homelessness and mental illness should fall on the city, not its police force.
Mamdani has also promised aggressive progressive action the moment he takes office. He says he will freeze rents on day one for the 2 million New Yorkers living in rent-stabilized apartments, make buses faster and free, and roll out free child care.
To fund it, he has floated new taxes targeting residents making more than $1 million and boosting corporate taxes for companies operating in the city.
