Former First Lady Michelle Obama is under fire for making several disparaging comments about white Americans during a promotional event for her new book; “The Look.”
Obama made the comments while speaking with Hollywood actress Tracee Ellis Ross for conversation on “beauty, culture and confidence” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The event was aimed at promoting Obama’s new book, “The Look,” which “chronicles the former First Lady’s style evolution from her husband’s 2004 U.S. Senate campaign through her White House years and beyond.”
Midway through the discussion, Obama erupted into a lengthy tirade aimed at White Americans, whom she accused of consistently meddling in “black folks’” business and livelihoods. “Let me explain something to white people. Our hair comes out of our head naturally in a curly pattern. So when we’re straightening it to follow your beauty standards, we are trapped by the straightness,” the former First Lady ranted.
“That’s why so many of us can’t swim and we run away from the water. People won’t go to the gym because we’re trying to keep our hair straight for y ‘all. It is exhausting and it’s so expensive and it takes up so much time,” she continued as Ross enthusiastically agreed. “Braids are for y ‘all so we can work harder and focus on the work. So why do we need an act, an act of law to tell white folks to get out of our hair? Don’t tell me how to wear my hair. Don’t wonder about it. Don’t touch it. Just don’t. It just hurts.”

Despite the former First Lady’s evident disdain for white Americans, nearly half of them voted to make her husband the first African American president in U.S. history in 2008. Official exit polls from CNN and the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research measured Obama’s support among white voters at 43 percent in 2008, which dipped slightly to 39 percent in 2012.
Elsewhere in the discussion, Obama was asked whether she would ever consider a run for office, particularly a White House bid. Her name has long been floated as a potential presidential candidate by a number of prominent left-wing pundits, lawmakers and Democratic Party strategists, though she has yet to formally express any interest in a 2028 run.
This is not changing, she said, as Obama ruled out the possibility of a presidential campaign while suggesting the country is sexist.
“Well, as we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready. That’s why I’m like, don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. You are not. So don’t waste my time,” Obama declared, drawing applause from the crowd. “You know, we got a lot of growing up to do. And there’s still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman. And we saw it.”
