Meghan Hays, who previously served as director of message planning on former President Joe Biden’s staff, became the latest Democrat to call on Jay Jones, the Democratic Party nominee for attorney general of Virginia, to drop out of the race. Jones has been facing intense scrutiny over the emergence of disturbing text messages in which he fantasized about murdering his political opponents and their children.
In 2022 text messages to a colleague, Jones stated that he wanted to put “two bullets” in the head of then-Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert. He then doubled down and threatened Gilbert’s wife and children over the phone, according to a report from the National Review.
“I’ve told you this before. Only when people feel pain personally do they move on policy,” the Democrat nominee told Republican House Delegate Carrie Coyner. Jones then directed his violent rhetoric towards Gilbert’s children. “I mean do I think Todd and Jennifer are evil? And that they’re breeding little fascists? Yes,” he went on.
A number of prominent Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have called on Jones to suspend his campaign over the disturbing messages. Prominent Democrats in Virginia, including gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger and Senator Mark Warner, have condemned his comments but stopped short of calling on him to drop out.
A handful of Democrat pundits, including Hays and “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough, have also called on Jones to step aside. “He should not be in the race,” the former Biden official said during an appearance on Fox News Monday.
“I mean, people can vote for him if they want to vote for him, if he’s going to stay in. It’s abhorrent language. It’s disgusting. He should not be in the race. It makes the Democratic Party look bad by not condemning this,” Hays continued. “It’s just not something that I think that Democrats want to stand for or should be standing for. And most Democrats do not stand for. So I think there needs to be a tone change here. And I’m not from Virginia. I know that you live in Virginia. You know that the elect is much more than I do,” she went on, further predicting that additional Democrats will call on Jones to drop out in the coming days.
Host John Roberts then asked the panel about statements from Rep. Spanberger, who said, “Virginians deserve a leader who learns, grows, and stands for everyday people. And Jay is that leader.” He then pointed to statements from Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, who said the embrace of Jones is an example of how Democrats have lost touch with the American people.
“Yeah, and I agree with what the Virginia Dems said. I just think that he shouldn’t be in the race. And I don’t think that, I just think that he should step out of this race much before the people have to call for him to step out. I mean, that is like an honorable thing to do,” Hays responded.
“What he said is, he has admitted it’s wrong. And I want leaders to admit that they’re wrong. But this is like what you said. This is very too far. It’s across the line. It is not appropriate for political rhetoric. It’s just, it’s disgusting. I don’t want a leader that acts like that.”
