NEW: Trump Admin Gives Ultimatum To Portland Mayor If Unrest Continues

The New Atlantis

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Tuesday that the number of federal agents deployed to Portland will “quadruple” if local authorities fail to combat unrest and violence from Antifa-linked extremists targeting federal buildings and facilities.

On Tuesday afternoon, Noem travelled to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility that has been consistently attacked by far-left rioters for more than 100 nights. Videos shared inside the facility showed Noem meeting with local officials before taking a few moments to pray for the agents stationed there.

Prior to making her way to the facility, the secretary had a heated meeting with Oregon Governor Tina Kotek at the Portland airport, the governor’s office confirmed. Kotek said she personally requested the meeting after hearing “through unofficial channels” that Noem planned on visiting the city.

“Today, in my meeting with Secretary Noem, I reiterated again that there is no insurrection in Oregon,” Kotek wrote in a statement. “Twice now, a federal judge has affirmed that there is no legal basis for military deployment in Portland. I was clear that I have confidence in local law enforcement to meet the moment.”

The governor added that she requested DHS and ICE “obey Oregon laws when they engage in federal operations.”

“I reiterated that I continue to be focused on doing whatever I can to protect Oregonians from military intervention or harmful federal law enforcement tacticsm” Kotek wrote. “Oregon is united against military policing in our communities.”

While speaking with Fox News’ Jesse Watters, Noem stated that she gave both Governor Kotek, as well as Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, an ultimatum if the continue to fail to reign in the extremist mobs besieging federal facilities.

I met with him and also the superintendent of the state police. I told them what we wanted; we wanted more security here at the building a bigger buffer zone to keep our officers safe. We wanted to have their streets opened up again and not let the anarchists run this city anymore,” the secretary said of her meeting with the mayor. Ultimately, Noem left the meeting feeling as though the mayor would continue to “play politics” and allow violence to continue.

“He did not commit to any of those promises and said that he’d give me an answer by tomorrow. And I’m hopeful that he will. What I told him is that if he did not follow through on some of these security measures for our officers, we were going to cover him up with more federal resources. And that we were going to send four times the amount of federal officers here so that the people of Portland could have some safety.”

A federal judge last week placed a temporary restraining order against President Trump’s decision to deploy 200 Oregon National Guard personnel to Portland in order to defend the facilities. Trump responded by deploying California National Guard personnel instead, though this was also denied.

A federal appeals court is set to hear arguments in the case starting Thursday.
