Gas prices: A slight decrease at the pumps to end the weekend

Gas prices slightly decreased on Sunday, with the average price of a gallon of regular gas falling to $3.506, according to AAA. This was a slight decrease from Saturday’s average cost of $3.511 per gallon. It’s also cheaper than the end of last week, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.521.

The price of gas remains a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the likely Democratic nominee, will have to indicate how she would address the country’s high gas prices, energy costs, and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, there has been a decrease in the pumps in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Sunday’s prices are still slightly more expensive than a week ago when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.501. Prices are also more expensive now than a month ago when gas was $3.503.

Hawaii has the highest average price for a gallon of regular gas at $4.662 per gallon on Thursday. Mississippi remained the state with the lowest average price at $2.979 per gallon.

Tennis phenom chosen as female flag bearer for US Olympic team

Earlier this week, it was announced that NBA superstar LeBron James would be the male flag bearer for the U.S. Olympic team in Paris during Friday’s opening ceremony. On Wednesday, the team found their woman. Coco Gauff has been selected as the female flag bearer and will join James in carrying the U.S. flag.

Cori Dionne “Coco” Gauff is the first tennis player ever selected to carry the U.S. flag during an Olympic opening ceremony, the Associated Press reported. At only 20 years old, she is the defending U.S. Open champion and has already won seven singles and nine doubles titles. In Paris, she will be making her Olympic debut. Gauff made her professional tennis debut in 2019 at the age of 15.

“I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the opening ceremony,” Gauff said in a statement. “I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is.”

Like James, Gauff was chosen in a vote among other U.S. Olympians, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee said. Fellow NBA superstar Stephen Curry nominated James.

Sarah Hirshland, USOPC CEO, reflected on the honor of being chosen by an athlete’s peers to carry the flag at the Olympics.

“To be nominated by your teammates for this honor speaks volumes about the way in which Coco approaches her sport and her role as a member of Team USA,” Hirshland said.

Earlier this year, the tennis superstar commented on participating in the Olympics. She was enthusiastic about the potential opportunity to do so, comparing it to competing in one of professional tennis’s prestigious competitions.

“I mean, for me, the Olympics is a top priority. I would say equal to the Grand Slams. I wouldn’t put it above or below, just because I’ve never played before. This is my first time,” Gauff said. “Obviously, I always want to do well, try to get a medal.”

Gas Prices: Increase for the second straight day after Harris becomes presumptive Democratic nominee

Gas prices increased again on Wednesday, with the average price of a gallon of regular gas rising to $3.513, according to AAA. This was an increase over Tuesday’s average price of $3.502.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, there has been a decrease in the pumps in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

The price of gas remains a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the presumptive nominee, will have to indicate how she would address the country’s high gas prices, the overall cost of energy, and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

Moreover, Wednesday’s price for gas was slightly more expensive than the price of regular gas last week, when it was $3.512 per gallon. Prices are also more expensive now than a month ago when the average cost for a gallon of regular was $3.448.

Gas prices vary significantly among states. For the second day in a row, Hawaii has the highest average price for a gallon of regular gas, at $4.685 a gallon on Wednesday. Mississippi remained the state with the lowest average price, at $2.99.
