US Olympic superstars Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky make Olympic history thumbnail

US Olympic superstars Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky make Olympic history

U.S. Olympic superstars, gymnast Simone Biles and swimmer Katie Ledecky, added to their medal tally on Thursday night. Each athlete won another medal in their respective competitions and made a bit of Olympic history along the way.

Biles, who already won a gold medal earlier this week when the U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastic team won the gold medal in the team competition, won the gold in the gymnastics individual all-around competition. It was the sixth Olympic gold medal for Biles and her ninth Olympic medal overall. She is just the third Olympic gymnast to win the individual all-around competition multiple times and the first gymnast in history to accomplish this feat in nonconsecutive Olympic competitions.

Ledecky, meanwhile, won a silver medal in the 4x200m relay on Thursday, earning her 13th Olympic medal. She has eight gold medals, four silver medals, and one bronze medal in her Olympic career. With her silver medal, Ledecky became the most decorated female athlete in Olympic history, according to ESPN.

Ledecky’s gold medal total is just one short of the total achieved by Larisa Latynina, a gymnast from the former Soviet Union, who last competed in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo.

Both Ledecky and Biles may not be finished quite yet in getting medals. Both can add to their medal totals at these Olympic games as each are scheduled, and favored to win medals, in other competitions later this week.

Gas prices: A decrease at the pumps to start August thumbnail

Gas prices: A decrease at the pumps to start August

Gas prices decreased again on Thursday, beginning the month of August slightly cheaper than at the beginning of July.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in the country was $3.483 on the first of the month, according to AAA. This was a slight decrease from Wednesday, the last day in July. It is also a slight decrease from exactly a month ago when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.491.

Gas prices remain an important issue heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the likely Democratic nominee, will have to indicate how she will address the country’s high gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, prices have decreased in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Gas prices vary significantly among states. To see how expensive gas is in each state, click here. Here are the gas prices for a gallon of regular-grade gas in and around Washington, D.C.

U.S. swimmer wins gold and sets Olympic record

U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky reminded the world that two American Olympic legends are competing in this year’s games in Paris. After the world saw gymnast Simone Biles dominate on Tuesday, Ledecky won her eighth gold medal in her career on Wednesday.

Ledecky turned in a masterful performance in Wednesday’s 1,500-meter freestyle competition. She set an Olympic record, finishing the event in 15:30.02, an astounding ten seconds of her next closest competitors, France’s Anastasiia Kirpichinikova, who finished in 15:40.35, and Germany’s Isabel Gose, who finished in 15:41.16.

The victory puts Ledecky in elite company. It was her 12th Olympic medal overall, which tied her with former U.S. swimmers Natalie Coughlin, Jenny Thompson, and Dara Torres for the most medals ever awarded to a female swimmer.

“Each means a lot, and each one is challenging in its own way, and I try not to really dwell on history or the magnitude of things again; I’ll just let you guys do that,” the Olympic champion said. “But yeah, I mean those women that I’m up there with now, they’re people that I’ve looked up to for so many years. I consider many of them friends, supporters, people that I was watching swim when I was just starting out in the sport, so that’s very special to me to share that with them, and they definitely inspired me, so I hope that some little girl out there is watching and will come along and get up there with all of us someday too.”

This is Ledecky’s second medal at the Paris Games. She won a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle on July 27. Ledecky is expected to compete in two more swimming events at these Olympics, the 800m freestyle and the 4x200m relay. Moreover, Ledecky, 27,  said she has no plans of slowing down or retiring after these games. She said she plans to compete again in the 2028 Olympics, when the games will be in Los Angeles.

“I’ve been consistent over these last few months and last few years in saying that I would love to compete in L.A. and that hasn’t changed,” Ledecky said. “That could change. I mean, you never know. So, I really just take it year by year at this point and I really haven’t thought much beyond this week in terms of what my fall is going to look like, what my next year is going to look like. But yeah, I don’t feel like I’m close to being finished in the sport yet.”

I consider many of them friends, supporters, people that I was watching swim when I was just starting out in the sport, so that’s very special to me to share that with them, and they definitely inspired me, so I hope that some little girl out there is watching and will come along and get up there with all of us someday too.” CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER This is Ledecky’s second medal at the Paris Games. But yeah, I don’t feel like I’m close to being finished in the sport yet.”, , U.S. swimmer wins gold and sets Olympic record, https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/YL.ledecky.webp, Washington Examiner, Political News and Conservative Analysis About Congress, the President, and the Federal Government, https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/cropped-favicon-32×32.png, https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/feed/, Washington Examiner Staff,

Gas prices: Consecutive days of decreases at the pumps to end July

Gas prices decreased again on Wednesday to officially end the month of July with a string of decreases at the pumps.

The average price of a gallon of regular gas fell to $3.492, according to AAA, matching a low from a month ago. The latest gas prices mark a week of price drops, with the cost of a gallon of regular gas going from $3.513 a week ago to the current price.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, there has been a decrease in the pumps in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

US women’s gymnastics team wins the gold at the Olympics

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team won the gold medal at the Olympics on Tuesday.

It was the first time since 2016 that the team won the gold medal and the fourth time overall for U.S. women’s gymnastics. They finished ahead of the surprising silver medalists Italy, who received a medal in Olympics gymnastics for the first time since 1928. The U.S. finished with 171.296 points, while Italy had 165.494. Brazil took third place and the bronze medal with 164.497 points.

The U.S. team was led by gymnastics superstar Simone Biles, now in her third Olympics. Despite a few routine mishaps, the U.S. team dominated the competition. The team’s lead was so large that those mistakes did not wind up mattering much in the final result.

While the spotlight was undoubtedly on Biles, teammate Sunisa “Suni” Lee might have been the unsung hero of the competition.

Lee, who won the gold medal in the all-around competition in the last summer Olympics in Tokyo, overcame a serious kidney disease in 2023. The condition was so severe that it caused her entire body to swell up, and she was unsure if she would ever be able to compete again. Her performance on the uneven bars on Tuesday helped the U.S. clinch the gold.

On Tuesday, after the victory, Lee mentioned that she was nervous about the competition on Monday night and sought guidance from team leader Simone Biles and fellow teammate Jordan Chiles, ESPN reported.

“We’re just really trying to support and lean on one another,” Lee said. “So that’s kind of the nature of the conversation, just letting each other know that we can lean on each other because we’ve been there. It’s really hard to be doing what we are doing, and it’s easier if we can lean on each other.”

Next up for the women’s gymnastics team is the all-around competition and the individual event finals for the balance beam, vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise. Biles, who won her fifth gold medal and eighth medal overall with the victory on Tuesday, has the opportunity to add to her collection.

The team’s win on Tuesday made Biles the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history. Now, she has the opportunity to add to her legend and become the American gymnast awarded the most gold medals ever in Olympic competitions.
