NEW: Secret Service Director Breaks Silence, REFUSES To Step Down Despite Admitting Shocking Mistakes

The New Atlantis

United States Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is rebuffing a chorus of calls for her resignation following the near-fatal assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump despite declaring “the buck stops with me” when it comes to the agency’s failures on Saturday.

Cheatle’s assertion came during an extended interview with ABC News immediately following the fallout from Saturday’s Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania where a 20-year-old man was able to fire eight rounds at President Trump and supporters on stage before he was shot and killed by a Secret Service sniper rifleman. Later reports confirmed that local officers were warned about the presence of Thomas Crooks on a rooftop about 400 feet away more than a minute before the bloodshed began.

“I’m being told that the shooter was actually identified as a potential person of suspicion. Units started responding to seek that individual out,” Cheatle told ABC News, according to Fox News. “Unfortunately, with the rapid succession of how things unfolded, by the time that individual was eventually located, they were on the rooftop and were able to fire off at the former president.”

Cheatle, who was appointed by President Joe Biden in 2022, accepted responsibility for the Secret Service’s failure to secure the perimeter of the rally, allowing Crooks to have a direct line of sight to the former president.

“The buck stops with me,” Cheatle said, adding, “This is an event that should have never happened.” She told ABC that her first reaction to the shooting was “shock.”

The same reaction may have occurred for several Secret Service agents in President Trump’s detail. Conservatives online have alleged that multiple female Secret Service members were ill-prepared to respond to the unfolding crisis and singled out one who appeared unable to holster her service weapon while Trump was loaded into a waiting SUV.

Cheatle explained that a decision was made to not place an agent on the roof where Crooks found his vantage due to a sloping surface. “That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point. And so, you know, there’s a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn’t want to put somebody up on a sloped roof. And so, you know, the decision was made to secure the building, from inside,” she said.

Cheatle also appeared to place the blame on local law enforcement for not securing the perimeter, according to a clip of her interview circulating online. “In this particular instance, we did share support for that particular site and that the USSS was responsible for the inner perimeter,” Cheatle said. “And then we sought assistance from our local counterparts for the outer perimeter. There was local police in that building, there was local police in the area that were responsible for the outer perimeter of the building.”

WATCH:

GOP lawmakers have promised a fresh round of investigations into the security lapses, assuring that Cheatle will have to appear before a select committee to further explain her decision-making for that day. The Hill reported on Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) pledge to conduct a “full investigation.”

“The American people deserve to know the truth. We will have Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and other appropriate officials from DHS and the FBI appear for a hearing before our committees ASAP,” Johnson wrote on X.

A spokesman for the Secret Service denied a recent report that agents were pulled off Trump’s detail just days earlier to enhance protection efforts around First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

REPORT: Elon Musk Pledges MASSIVE Monthly Donations To Trump Through Election

The New Atlantis

Elon Musk is promising to inject rocket fuel into the presidential race, offering former President Donald Trump a massive boost to his electoral prospects.

The outspoken entrepreneur announced on Monday that he would be donating a jaw-dropping $45 million per month to a super PAC set up to buttress the Trump campaign’s voter outreach. The Wall Street Journal first reported on Musk’s massive gift which comes just a few days after the Tesla founder fully embraced Trump after he survived an attempt on his life. Others contributing to America PAC include Palantir Technologies co-founder Joe Lonsdale, the Winklevoss twins, former U.S. Ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft, and her husband Joe Craft, who is chief executive of coal producer Alliance Resource Partners, the outlet added.

CAST YOUR VOTE: Should Voter ID Be Mandatory In The 2024 Election?

Since its June inception, America PAC has furiously been registering voters in key battleground states where President Trump’s lead has grown significantly since Saturday’s shooting. Among its activities, the shadow group is encouraging Trump supporters to vote early by absentee ballot or mail-in voting, mirroring a key initiative by the Republican National Committee to accomplish the same objective nationwide. A source with the PAC told the Journal that its strategy is centered around countering Democrats’ historical “get out the vote” advantage in ground operations.

Even by the money-saturated standards of America’s politics, Musk’s donation marks an eye-popping expansion of activity by the ultra-wealthy to influence elections. At a net worth of around $250 million, the South African native is by far the world’s richest man, and his promised sums, if they materialize, may represent the single greatest set of contributions by an American citizen in the history of U.S. politics.

The Journal reported that America PAC has beefed up its staff, hiring hundreds in swing states like Pennsylvania, where the latest polls show the former president leading President Joe Biden by 3%; as well as Virginia, where conflicting polls confirm that a state won by Biden by 10% four years ago is now hotly contested.

Musk’s donation is also an abrupt shift from statements he made back in March when he said he would be withholding financial support from both main presidential candidates this fall. After a bullet from a high-powered rifle nicked Trump’s ear during a speech in Butler, PA, Musk posted on his social media platform X, “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.”

“Last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt,” he added.

The Journal previously reported that talks between Trump and Musk have increased over the past year and seen the two men develop a friendlier rapport, leading some observers to speculate whether Musk would hold an influential role in a second Trump administration. It appears unlikely that the SpaceX founder would leave his three corporations to take a position in Trump’s cabinet should he win, but stranger things have happened.

WATCH: ‘Morning Joe’ Hosts MELT DOWN On Their Own Network For Pulling Show Off Air

The New Atlantis

One day after being pulled off the air by MSNBC executives afraid of what they might say, “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski kicked off Tuesday’s program with a fresh diatribe against their network overlords.

Addressing his viewers “who watch us every day,” the former Republican congressman turned liberal commentator said he was both “surprised and disappointed” to learn that his show was going to be yanked from its regular morning hour two days after a brazen assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. CNN previously reported that MSNBC feared what Scarborough or his guests might say during a delicate time when Trump allies were on high alert for any comment that could be construed as an understanding of the near-fatal shooting.

VOTE NOW: Do you blame BIDEN or TRUMP for the crashing economy?

“Let’s talk about what happened yesterday. We were told in no uncertain terms on Sunday evening that there was gonna be one newsfeed across all NBC news channels yesterday. In today’s show, Lester Holt, other people, you worked with on Sunday, were told that there was going to be one newsfeed across all NBC News channels that we were going to stay as a network in breaking news mode throughout all day yesterday. That did not happen. We don’t know why that didn’t happen. Our team was not given a good answer as to why that didn’t happen, but it didn’t happen,” Scarborough ranted.

“We were also told it was going to happen throughout the day, and I guess after there was such strong blowback about yesterday morning, I guess they changed their plans, and so those plans changed as well. So, it didn’t, um, you know, we’ve talked about it off the air, we’ll talk about it on the air, because we talk about everything on the air. We were very surprised, we were very disappointed, and if we had known there was going to be the one newsfeed for NBC News across all NBC News channels, we obviously wouldn’t have been in yesterday morning,” he continued.

Senior correspondent Willie Geist agreed with that sentiment, thanking viewers for “trusting us” to deliver the news but expressing equal disappointment after he learned about the change on short notice.

“We’d like to figure out exactly why there wasn’t that one newsfeed,” Scarborough repeated, ostensibly upset that his program was shelved after being given a plan by the network that ultimately wasn’t followed. Later in the day, MSNBC continued with its regular programming and provided live updates about the vice presidential selection of Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and the Republican National Convention.

“I think the reason why, and why this show continues 17 years later, is on being the place where you can go to have the hard conversations in a civil way. And so it seemed like now more than ever is a day, a time when we would like to be on. And I think our viewers agree with that. So we continue,” Brzezinski added lamely.

WATCH:

“Morning Joe” has consistently returned some of MSNBC’s highest ratings at a time when the network has led Fox News at times, forcing executives to make tough decisions about its overall strategy. Following the October 7th, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas, MSNBC canned longtime anchor Mehdi Hasan and terminated contracts with three Muslim correspondents, igniting fury from the left about why the network was suppressing Islamic points of view following the deadly mass murder.

Calls To Boycott Jack Black Explode After Bandmate Wishes For Trump’s Murder

The New Atlantis

Tenacious D, a longtime bandmate of actor Jack Black, is in the proverbial crosshairs of activists upset over a recent statement calling for former President Donald Trump to be murdered.

Kyle Gass, who has been Black’s bandmate dating back to 1994, was caught on camera during a recent concert in Sydney where he thanked the crowd for celebrating his birthday and made a wish that any potential assassin who takes up arms against Trump doesn’t miss their target.

“Make a wish,” Black said as he presented Gass with a birthday cake on stage. Gass then responded: “Don’t miss Trump next time.” The crowd laughed approvingly at his remark.

WATCH:

The video caught the eye of X owner Elon Musk who quickly endorsed President Trump just hours after he was grazed by a bullet from the shooter’s AR-15 rifle.

Black, a proud Biden supporter, last posted on X his endorsement of the incumbent Democrat, posting a video of his remarks at a Hollywood fundraiser hosted by George Clooney and Julia Roberts. “I’m pretty sure I’m gonna get a sweet shoutout in his victory speech for what I gave up to be here!” said Black as he sported American flag overalls. “Because when democracy is at stake, Jack Black answers the call!”

WATCH:

Working together, allies of Trump have compiled an exhaustive list of celebrities and Democrats who have wished death upon Trump at some point or another since he arrived on the scene in 2016. Most infamously, comedian Kathy Griffin was canceled in 2017 after she posed for a photograph of a bloody prop Trump head, but many outrageous statements since then have been ignored or brushed aside as hyperbole.

Last June, U.S. Delegate Stacey Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands), speaking on The Sunday Show, was nearly finished sharing her thoughts about the ongoing classified documents case against the former president when she said the latest developments “should be terrifying to all Americans, and [Trump] needs to be shot,” quickly correcting herself to stay “stopped.”

However, the unfortunate timing of Tenacious D’s latest death threat has put the band at the epicenter of recriminations about the tenor of discourse in American politics as activists on the right and left seek to diagnose what led to 20-year-old Thomas Crooks attempting to take Trump’s life.

“The people who claim to be moral and empathetic are currently celebrating an assa*sination attempt on a president,” wrote Rugg, prompting others to chime in with their agreement. “It’s insane to see all this unfolding right before our eyes,” wrote one follower. “They’ve dialed UP the rhetoric,” added another.

President Biden on Sunday attempted to reset the narrative around Democrats’ vitriol toward his opponent, saying from the Oval Office that Americans need to “bring the temperature down” this election season. “Politics must never be a literal battlefield,” Biden said, “God forbid – a killing field,” in remarks noted by Fox News.

Rather than refrain from campaigning, President Trump has emerged more ready to fight than ever before. Speaking on Monday with the New York Post, he credited his Secret Service protection with saving his life and later told Fox News’ Bret Baier that he is set to announce his pick for vice president later in the day.

JUST IN: Trump VP Finalist Spotted With ‘Secret Service-Looking’ Security Detail

The New Atlantis

A phalanx of black SUVs arrived at the home of a final contender on President Donald Trump’s vice presidential shortlist, stoking speculation that he has nabbed the role just hours before the former president is set to appear at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Two days after his brush with death, President Trump may be directing the Secret Service to the home of Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH). The Daily Mail reported that “three black trucks with US government plates” arrived outside the Ohio Republican’s home on Sunday evening. A local Democratic bigwig posted on X that he saw a “bunch of official, secret service-looking vehicles” and “two cop cars parked outside JD Vance’s house this afternoon.”

“He’s been told he’s VP already for sure,” wrote user Mark Niehaus.

VOTE NOW: Are You In Favor Of Term Limits For All Members Of Congress?

The Mail’s report about Sen. Vance potentially winning the veepstakes conflicted with a second report by NBC News where a source claims that the arrival of increased protection has nothing to do with the Trump campaign.

“A source familiar says it’s NOT Secret Service, not related to veepstakes and that the presence is strictly precautionary after yesterday,” wrote senior political reporter Henry Gomez, adding that Governor Mike DeWine claimed he directed extra security to the Vance home following the attempted assassination of President Trump.

That said, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, the two remaining members of the reported shortlist, have not been reported to have received any recent special protection. Gov. DeWine, a Republican, may very well have directed more security personnel to Sen. Vance’s home at the direction of higher-ups in the party.

Ohio State Highway Patrol and officials with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) staged Vance’s home but would not say the reason for their visit. “For safety reasons, the patrol does not discuss specific details related to security operations,” OSHP said in a statement to NBC affiliate WLWT.

Vance has been a prolific presence on the campaign trail for Trump, defending him throughout his various criminal trials and appearing in Manhattan as he sat through his conviction on 34 counts of corporate subterfuge related to a hush money payment. Following the attempted shooting of Trump by 20-year-old Thomas Crooks on Saturday, he went public with accusations that allies of President Joe Biden fanned the flames of hate, stoking unwell individuals like Crooks to reach for a gun to stop Trump from returning to the White House.

Vance, 39, would be among the youngest contenders for the second most powerful job in the world. He is surpassed by just one: John C. Breckinridge, a lawyer, politician, and soldier who became vice president in 1857 at the age of 36. Although insiders close to Trump say he is not particularly fond of Vance or any of the three men who may become his top deputy, the calculation may have changed on Saturday as Trump is known for soliciting intense loyalty from those around him. Sen. Vance has played into that desire: in February, he uncovered an anti-Trump “kill switch” establishing a multi-year commitment to provide continued funding to Ukraine, a component specifically buried in a funding bill to block President Trump’s America First brand on the world stage.

4 ‘Republicans’ Save Merrick Garland From Inherent Contempt Resolution thumbnail

4 ‘Republicans’ Save Merrick Garland From Inherent Contempt Resolution

The New Atlantis

U.S. House Republicans on Thursday narrowly failed to hold U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt over his refusal to provide an audio recording of President Joe Biden’s taped interview with special counsel Robert Hur, and four Republicans who defected are now being blamed.

A leading conservative account on X singled out the four lawmakers — Congressmen Tom McClintock (R-CA), John Duarte (R-CA), David Joyce (R-OH), and Mike Turner (R-OH) — after they voted with Democrats to protect President Biden’s top cop from being criminally charged for withholding the recording. Republicans had sought access to it since Hur released a withering memo compiled from his interview with the president about how classified documents came to be placed in the garage of his Delaware home. The account, @DC_Draino, urged followers to call the offices of the four Republicans and vent their anger.

VOTE NOW: Do you blame BIDEN or TRUMP for the crashing economy?

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was supportive of the contempt push but controls a razor-thin majority, meaning just two or more Republicans falling out of line can derail a motion or even the chamber’s entire agenda. However, conservatives ostensibly believe they can bring their four colleagues in line eventually, as Rep. Anna Luna (R-FL) has moved to schedule a second contempt vote next week when more lawmakers return to Washington.

With President Joe Biden’s campaigns remaining on the ropes, the House GOP has moved aggressively to set an agenda that benefits former President Donald Trump’s campaign and Republicans down the November ballot. The SAVE Act, which would restrict the potential for non-citizen voting in federal elections, was passed on Thursday with unanimous Republican support and even a handful of Democratic lawmakers.

“This will be one of the most important votes that members of this chamber will ever take in their entire careers,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said in a press release before the vote, according to Fox News.

“And it’s an issue we never thought we would have to actually address, but that moment has come to us now. Should Americans and Americans alone determine the outcome of American elections? Or should we allow foreigners and illegal aliens to decide who sits in the White House and in the People’s House and in the Senate?”

Returning to a Garland contempt vote next week will give Republicans another opportunity to push their message of “lawfare” brought against President Trump. The attorney general and former Supreme Court nominee has faced the GOP’s wrath on a number of fronts over the past years; a deputy in his office left only to join the case against Trump brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, suggesting a coordinated attempt to charge the former president. Last year Garland fumbled the appointment of special counsel David Weiss to prosecute Hunter Biden, backtracking after allegations surfaced that he initially denied special counsel powers. And Garland remains mired in Trump’s stalled federal cases, torn between granting special counsel Jack Smith independence or pushing forward on his own to try and prosecute Trump before the November election.

NEW: ‘Power-Hungry’ Jill Biden’s Deep-Seated Grudge Against Kamala Harris Is Revealed

The New Atlantis

As observers continue to try and parse who among President Joe Biden’s closest allies are urging him to stay in the race, signs are pointing to a fractious division between First Lady Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as the latter prepares for the event that she is asked suddenly lead the ticket.

The Daily Mail reported that a rupture between the two power-hungry boss women kicked into high gear during the 2020 campaign after Harris, then a candidate for president, accused Biden of racism during his 1990s-era push for increased incarceration.

VOTE NOW: Do you blame BIDEN or TRUMP for the crashing economy?

“Go f*** yourself,” Dr. Biden is reported to have said about Harris to supporters during a private campaign call. It has since only gone downhill, the outlet claims.

One Democratic operative close to the First Lady admitted that her full-throated embrace of a second term in the White House is buoyed in part by her deep-seated animosity toward Harris. The idea that Harris, a former state attorney general who campaigned hard against Biden’s record on race, could suddenly find herself in the Oval Office unnerves her greatly. It’s “One-hundred percent” part of her resistance to Biden dropping out, the source added.

Describing the vitriol over the years, the individual said Dr. Jill claimed to have “hated” Harris during a 2019 feud with then-candidate Biden when she accused him of opposing mandatory racial busing early on as a U.S. senator. “She doesn’t let things go and she has never forgiven Kamala for comments that some took to be allegations of racism,” the person said. When Biden was considering a running mate in 2020, his wife purportedly pushed him toward anyone except Harris.

“Jill was trying to stop Kamala joining the Biden ticket in 2020. She has hated her ever since the school bus thing. But she bit her tongue because Biden boxed himself into a corner by saying he would pick a black woman for his running mate,” another insider told the outlet.

The New York Times reported earlier this week that the White House had clandestinely conducted a poll testing Vice President Harris’s ability to defeat former President Donald Trump in November. The results, while marginally better than Biden’s chances, were not overly encouraging. Still, former colleagues of Harris have rushed to defend the value she brings to the Biden administration. Former Maryland Attorney General and Democrat Doug Gansler told the Daily Mail he finds it “hard to imagine someone more qualified” than Harris and said President Biden “will do the right thing” and step down in the coming days.

Wherever Harris’s relationship stands with the First Lady, Gansler added, “Joe Biden picked her and arguably in some way, he was elected President because he picked her.”

The pressure on Dr. Jill to give up the power grab appears to be adding up. On Thursday she strolled past the press while on the campaign trail for her husband, pausing only after reporters shouted several questions toward her about Biden’s fitness for office and ability to withstand another four years of the world’s most demanding job.

“How are you feeling about the state of the race?” asked a female reporter.

“Why are you screaming at me? You know me. Don’t scream at me. Just let me talk,” said a visibly frustrated first lady before turning around and entering an SUV.

One contestant in President Trump’s final round of the veepstakes is getting a major push from former First Lady Melania Trump.

Puck News reported that Melania in recent days has been speaking warmly about North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, a former primary rival of Trump’s who has gone out of his way to stump for him across multiple swing states. Sources say the former first lady believes in Burgum, 67, because of her close relationship with his wife Kathryn, who previously worked with Melania on a White House initiative. She is up against Donald Trump, Jr., who is pushing aggressively for Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).

VOTE NOW: Are You In Favor Of Term Limits For All Members Of Congress?

“If it’s Melania over Don Jr., she wins,” a source told the outlet before pausing to note that her credibility took a major hit after she urged Trump to endorse Mehmet Oz over David McCormick in Pennsylvania’s 2022 U.S. Senate race. “That was a major f***-up on her part. It cost her,” the former Trump aide said.

Supporters of Gov. Burgum cite his bonhomie, low-key demeanor as an asset to the truculent president, bringing gravitas to the ticket without outshining him. The North Dakota Republican is also fabulously wealthy, having funded his own presidential bid with $20 million in personal donations while carrying a Rolodex of high-net-worth conservatives in the business world who have largely been leery about backing President Trump.

Sources told Puck News that President Trump, for his part, doesn’t much care for any of the remaining VP contenders who are widely rumored to include Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) as well. He is reportedly “irked” at the idea his selection will somehow help him win in November. “He doesn’t much give a f*** about it. He doesn’t love any of these people; he doesn’t know these people,” said a person close to the former president. “With Burgum, he likes his look, but they haven’t actually spent a lot of time together; one-on-one, just maybe five, eight times. He doesn’t spend time with J.D. He doesn’t give a f*** about Mike Pence,” they added, referring to his former vice president’s continued condemnations of his campaign.

Earlier this week, the Republican National Committee adopted a national platform that excluded the prioritization of banning abortion, a change largely believed to be at the request of President Trump. He has confided his worry about selecting Gov. Burgum after he signed a near-total abortion ban in North Dakota, according to CNN. Asked about Burgum as a potential pick, Trump told Fox News Radio, “It’s a little bit of an issue. It’s a pretty strong ban. You know, I think Doug is great. But it is a strong, he’s taken a very strong stance, or the state has, I don’t know if it’s Doug, but the state has, so it’s an issue.”

‘DISGUSTING’: Ladies Of ‘The View’ Get Into Heated Shouting Match About Biden

The New Atlantis

Consternation about President Joe Biden’s future bubbled over on “The View” Thursday as conversation among the co-hosts descended into a shouting match about whether Democrats are tanking their chances in November by calling on him to end his campaign.

The Daily Caller reported on a back-and-forth between Sunny Hostin and her colleague Sara Haines, who stated she was “ashamed” of her fellow Democrats and found their pressure on Biden to drop out “disgusting,” comparing it to Republicans’ disciplined ability to “fall in line” behind Trump. The vitriol was sparked after Joy Behar said it was a “good idea” for Democrats to be talking about forcing Biden out of the race.

VOTE NOW: Are You In Favor Of Term Limits For All Members Of Congress?

“You [Joy Behar] said in commercial that no one knows what’s going to happen. We’re all just giving it our best guess. That’s why I would love for people within Biden’s support to bring down the temperature on those of us who are also raising the flag for the same reason, but a different idea. Because everyone is saying..,” said Haines before she was cut off.

“What do you mean?” co-host Sunny Hostin asked.

“I’m saying that people who think that it’s serious — and there are a lot of people speaking up like myself — a lot of people shut us down with ‘It was one bad night. Shut up, and fall in line.’ That is what Republicans do. As a Democrat — actually, as an independent who votes Democrat mostly — I’m ashamed that they’re telling us to put our head down and shut up. I think it’s disgusting,” Haines continued.

WATCH:

Democrats on Capitol Hill found themselves in “purgatory” after President Biden’s hour-long press conference Thursday evening. Although President Biden badly stumped twice — referring to the Ukrainian president as “Putin” and his own vice president as “Trump” — he was recognized for delivering detailed foreign policy answers in response to pointed questions about ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Later, Biden insisted once again that he is saying in the race.

The prospect of a second Trump administration has sparked recriminations about what would happen to the country if Democrats lose in November. Last month, “The View” hosted Rachel Maddow, who warned the hosts that President Trump may put all of them in detention centers.

“I don’t think anyone is safe,” Maddow asserted in one of the most outlandish episodes of the 27-year program. Her belief was shared by “View” co-host Joy Behar, who kicked off the segment speculating about how she and her fellow liberal hosts would be in danger if President Trump wins another four-year term. The only thing on Trump’s mind is “retribution,” Behar claimed, saying “There has been a lot of talk about Trump seeking retribution if he gets into office for his legal troubles, for his personal troubles, for his hair, whatever. He always has somebody to blame, you know? So you said recently that you thought that you as an outspoken critic, could be a target yourself.”

Jen Psaki Snaps At Democrat Guest In Heated Back-And-Forth: ‘What The Hell Are You Doing?’

The New Atlantis

MSNBC host Jen Psaki rushed to defend President Joe Biden after a Democratic strategist joining her for a panel accused party leaders of insinuating he isn’t fit to hold office.

Appearing on Chris Hayes’s program Thursday evening, the former White House press secretary jumped in after Columbia University professor and contributor Basil Smikle blamed Democrats for undercutting Biden’s leadership with calls to drop out.

CAST YOUR VOTE: Should Voter ID Be Mandatory In The 2024 Election?

“My issue is this: If you’re standing up, if you’re a Democrat right now and you’re standing up and you’re saying Joe Biden is not fit to run for office and therefore should not be in office in January, you’re also saying he’s not fit to be president right now. What the hell are you doing?” Smikle exclaimed as Psaki attempted to interrupt him. “That is what you’re saying,” he told her, “because you’re saying he does not have the chops to be president for the next four years starting in January, and I have a huge problem with that.”

Psaki repackaged Democrats’ fears differently, stating that many in the party feel Biden simply can’t beat former President Donald Trump a second time and don’t agree with Republicans that he should immediately step down.

“I actually think a lot of the Democrats who’ve been out there and a lot of the people who’ve been voicing concern are about whether he can defeat Donald Trump. They’re looking at the states, they’re looking at their districts, they’re looking at concerns about voters and whether he is up to the job. I have not heard a Democrat say, aside from maybe one in Washington State, that he should step down or he is not up to the job now. We’re having this conversation because Donald Trump in part is not Mitt Romney, right? Donald Trump is an existential threat to our democracy. So it’s a question, and a debate, and it’s important to have, and that’s how I feel. But I think a lot of people who are bringing forward questions are being very, very thoughtful about it. It does need to be resolved, and I agree with you on that, but it’s a question about how to be resolved,” she said.

WATCH:

Hayes broke up the verbal scuffle to say that voters are being asked to judge President Biden’s ability four years from now “when he’s 85,” and the president should also consider if he “can be the same person four years from now that I am today.”

Frequently, Democrats harken back to the Republican Party of yesterday, referring glowingly to Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign as an example of high-minded statesmanship lost following the Trump era. Ironically, a look back at Psaki’s record as a spokeswoman for the Obama campaign shows that she regarded Romney not so differently from Trump today.

In September of 2012, the former Massachusetts governor was secretly recorded suggesting that 47% of the country would automatically rule out voting for him because they receive some kind of social welfare benefit. They “are dependent upon government” and “believe that they are victims,” Romney told donors at a private retreat, remarks seized on by Psaki as an example of the Republican’s cruel view of Americans.

“Mitt Romney wrote off nearly 50 percent of the country before he was even sworn into office. This is something that is shocking and really alarming to people,” Psaki said on CNN days later. “What the governor said is very significant, because it reveals something about his value system.”

President Biden on Thursday stood for his first press conference of the year as the White House Press Corps peppered him with questions about his summit with NATO leaders and his ability to serve another four-year term. Hours earlier, the 81-year-old incumbent badly stumbled at the podium, introducing Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky as “President Putin” and saying that he is proud to serve with “Vice President Trump.”
