JUST IN: Former RNC Chair Endorses Kamala Harris, Gets RIPPED

The New Atlantis

The former chair of the Republican National Committee who touted Mitt Romney as the party’s ideal presidential nominee back in 2012 is now in the crosshairs of conservatives for bailing on his party and supporting Vice President Kamala Harris in November.

Following the landslide loss of Romney to former President Barack Obama as he sought a second term, the RNC conducted a much-touted “autopsy” report on why the Republican Party struggled to win over young and minority voters despite years of concerted outreach. Much of the report focused on the years leading up to the election, especially the 2009-2011 period chaired by Michael Steele, a former lieutenant governor of Maryland and a prominent Black Republican. While he rode a red wave in 2010 thanks in large party to the Tea Party movement, Steele was unceremoniously ousted the following year by Reince Priebus.

(FREE RED HAT: “Impeached. Arrested. Convicted. Shot. Still Standing”)

Since leaving center stage, Steele has refashioned himself into an anti-Trump political pundit, sitting on panels on mainstream media outlets and lamenting the sea change that’s taken place in the GOP since the 2016 election of former President Donald Trump. Now that the 45th president appears poised to defeat Harris, Steele is showing his true colors, endorsing Harris just days after she succeeded President Joe Biden on the ticket.

In a post on X, the former Republican leader shared a picture of Harris dressed in a Captain America outfit and trolled Trump’s old account, writing “Hey @realDonaldTrump. You ready for this?”

The post, spotted by the Western Journal, mirrors similar ones posted by influential liberal accounts on the social network, indicating what Steele has been reading since leaving his old party in the rearview. Brian Krassenstein, an influencer who has been paid to prop up Biden’s flailing campaign before it was ended, also shared the AI-generated image of Harris, asking followers if it was “weird” and predicting the Democrat would be leading in the polls within five weeks.

To be sure, Steele was a vocal anti-Trump opponent long before this year. He joined the Lincoln Project in 2020, whose stated goal was to unite Republicans against President Trump’s reelection, endorsing Biden and appearing in the group’s advertisements. For his years of undermining conservatives, Steele was granted a recurring role in MSNBC’s new weekend lineup alongside the former spokeswoman for Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

If Steele thought his post was a flex, he might have miscalculated judging by the flood of critical comments he received. “Omg – No dignity, cringe AF,” wrote a prominent conservative poster. “I’m so embarrassed for you,” said Federalist contributor David Harsanyi in his own reply. And a Twitchy curator laughed on the inside, saying Trump “broke” Steele’s brain.

Following the attempted assassination of Trump earlier this month, Steele was slammed for pushing a far-left conspiracy theory that the Republican leader wasn’t actually shot at the rally when he questioned whether Trump was actually hit with the bullet, according to Fox News.

“From running the RNC to debasing himself on MSNBC and posting AI-generated Dem fan fiction. Gives you a good glimpse at how the Republican Party was run for a couple of decades, and why voters were so hungry for someone like Donald Trump to start fighting,” posted Christopher Bedford, senior politics editor and DC correspondent for The Blaze.

“The former RNC chairman, ladies and gentlemen. I’ll hand it to him: he is incapable of embarrassment,” political commentator Tom Woods said.

NEW: Left-Wing Rioters Storm Capitol, Violently Bang On Doors

The New Atlantis

Don’t call it an insurrection.

Far-left protestors stormed the Capitol building on Tuesday, banging on doors and forcing lawmakers to barricade themselves inside their offices while the mob expressed its anger over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivering a speech before a joint session of Congress. The Jewish leader has been denounced globally for atrocities committed during the nation’s war against Hamas in response to the horrific October 7, 2023 attack, including by many Democratic members of the U.S. House and Senate who are boycotting his visit. The liberal vitriol was even more pronounced among rioters.

(FREE RED HAT: “Impeached. Arrested. Convicted. Shot. Still Standing”)

Fox News reported that approximately 200 anti-Israel protestors gathered in the Cannon building’s Rotunda hall, chanting pro-Palestinian slogans as police officers worked to apprehend many participants. Video of the rally shows most protestors clad in matching red shirts with corresponding slogans including “Jews Say Stop Arming Israel,” “Stop Arming Israel,” and “Not in Our Name.”

A source within the office of Democratic Congressman Dan Kildee (D-MI) said the Michigan lawmaker and his staff and interns locked the doors to their offices and barricaded entryways after protestors began “violently beating on all three of the doors.”

WATCH:

“Hundreds of protesters outside the office became disruptive, violently beating on the office doors, shouting loudly, and attempting to force entry into the office,” Kildee’s chief of staff told Fox in a statement. “U.S. Capitol Police and Sergeant at Arms responded immediately to the incident and have made several arrests.”

“Congressman Kildee is safe and his staff are all accounted for,” the statement added.

U.S. Capitol Police characterized the mob as “peaceful demonstrators.” In a statement on X, the agency wrote, “The Cannon Rotunda is now clear of demonstrators. We will provide [the] number of arrests tonight when we get the final number.” Among the crimes committed by protestors were crowding, obstructing, or incommoding, according to the Capitol Police.

A steady stream of Democratic lawmakers has decided to skip Netanyahu’s speech in solidarity with far-left activists who say Washington and the White House aren’t doing enough to limit civilian casualties in the conflict. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) was set to preside over the joint session but on Tuesday announced that she would be passing up the opportunity. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), who has generally supported Israel and called for a peaceful resolution, will preside instead.

Speaking with reporters in advance of his speech, Netanyahu said President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign does not dampen his enthusiasm to work with whoever will serve as the United States’ next president. “In this time of war and uncertainty, it’s important that Israel’s enemies know that America and Israel stand together,” the leader said.

The riot comes more than three years after the January 6, 2021 riots at the Capitol where pro-Trump protestors entered the building in an attempt to delay certification of the 2020 election. In the time since, the Department of Justice has overseen the conviction of hundreds of participants, though a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision narrowing the scope of the crimes means many now have the opportunity to challenge their sentences.

Legendary PGA Tour Winner Dies Suddenly At 64

The New Atlantis

Mark Carnevale, the legendary PGA Tour winner who later went on to establish a second chapter in his career as a broadcaster for the organization, has died at 64.

Golf’s leading body announced that Carnevale died suddenly though didn’t disclose the cause, according to the New York Post. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan called his friend a “beloved part of the TOUR family.”

“He was a member of that elite club, a PGA Tour winner, and then he held numerous roles within the industry, most recently as a significant voice in PGA Tour Radio’s coverage,” Monahan said in a statement. “Mark knew the game and did a terrific job of conveying insights from his unique point of view — and with an engaging wit and sense of humor.”

(FREE RED HAT: “Impeached. Arrested. Convicted. Shot. Still Standing”)

Carnevale’s career spanned more than three decades going back to 1992 when he nabbed the coveted Rookie of the Year award for his exceptional play and victory in the Chattanooga Classic at the age of 32. He played in 212 PGA-sanctioned events during that time and held the director post at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Virginia Beach Open in 2003.

In 2005, the Annapolis, Maryland native traded in the clubs for a seat in the booth, narrating PGA events during the early days of SiriusXM satellite radio. His last assignment was two weeks ago when he covered the Scottish Open, and he was slated to host during the upcoming 3M Open in Minnesota.

“Mark Carnevale was an integral part of live coverage on our streaming platforms and PGA TOUR Radio coverage. He was a consummate professional, who was respected by the PGA TOUR players he covered, and his insightful analysis and humor will be greatly missed,” Greg Hopfe, PGA TOUR Entertainment senior vice president and executive producer, said in a statement.

Athletics were in Carnevale’s blood, though golf wasn’t always front and center in his career prospects. His father, Ben Carnevale, coached the United States Naval Academy men’s basketball team. The family later moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, and Carnevale played college golf at James Madison.

Speaking with CBS News following his transition to broadcasting, Carnevale welcomed the opportunity but admitted he still felt a twinge when watching his friends continue to tee up. “I can’t tell you how many times people have said, ‘Are you playing in your own tournament?’” Carnevale said. “I miss the competitive part of it. But I don’t miss the travel, and I don’t miss being out there grinding when you’re not playing well. I hope this will be a good substitute. It won’t replace playing golf but it will add to my understanding as a whole of professional golf. That’s in a sense what drives me. I feel like I can make a difference to the tournament and the Nationwide Tour as a whole.”

JUST IN: Trump Reveals What Biden Said On Call After Assassination Attempt

The New Atlantis

President Donald Trump has opened up about a call he received from President Joe Biden shortly after he was nearly killed in an assassination attempt on July 13.

During a joint sit down with his vice presidential pick, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Trump retold the conversation he had with Biden after turning his head during a rally and narrowly avoiding a round from an AR-15 rifle. Re-creations of the shooter’s angle show that President Trump would likely have been struck in the side and back of the head if he hadn’t turned to look at a chart during his speech.

(FREE RED HAT: “Impeached. Arrested. Convicted. Shot. Still Standing”)

“It was good. It was a nice conversation,” Trump told Fox News host Jesse Watters in his first interview since the incident. “He said ‘You’re lucky you turned to the right.’ Obviously someone briefed him, but he did say that to me. ‘You’re lucky you turned to the right.’”

Watters was quick to add to the lighthearted moment: “The country is lucky if it turns to the right.”

“Wouldn’t it be nice?” Trump responded.

Earlier in the interview, President Trump recounted the rapid response of his Secret Service agents and recalled a brief dispute over their desire to carry him from the stage on a stretcher. Instead, Trump rose to his feet after getting nicked by the bullet and pumped his fist in the air, a historic moment that captured the public’s imagination and landed him on the cover of Time Magazine.

“They thought I was hit in this area,” Trump said, pointing to his chest, “and I said ‘No, I’m okay. I’m fine. I’m going to get up. I’m not going to be taken out on a stretcher.’ We had a little argument while I had six guys lying on top of me.”

A bipartisan outpouring of sympathy for President Trump has catapulted him to his highest approval ratings in some polls, and on Tuesday Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned after publicly accepting responsibility for the shooting. On Sunday, President Biden ended his bid for a second term, a not-so-tacit acknowledgment that Trump was in the driver’s seat if the two faced off in November. Instead, he will likely face Vice President Kamala Harris, who has energized Democrats but polls barely better against Trump than her boss.

Last week’s Republican National Convention was a moment for the GOP to coalesce behind Trump’s candidacy and welcome Vance to the ticket. Delegates and guests were spotted wearing cotton bandages over their right ears, a show of solidarity with the Republican. Pop culture figures like Joe Rogan and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg have remarked on the “badass” moment by Trump, the first current or former president to survive a shooting since President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.

BREAKING: Secret Service Director RESIGNS In Disgrace After Trump Assassination Attempt

The New Atlantis

Sources close to the Secret Service say Director Kimberly Cheatle has tendered her resignation one day after an incendiary congressional hearing marked by accusations of dereliction and her mea culpa for allowing an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

NBC Homeland Security Correspondent Julia Ainsley was first to report on two sources who said that the director resigned Tuesday morning and that an official announcement would be coming later in the day. Cheatle previously declined to resign in an interview she gave just days after Trump was struck by a bullet while speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The shooting nearly became a constitutional crisis and prompted a reckoning among lawmakers about the state of today’s political dialogue as well a bipartisan calls for increased security around presidential candidates.

The steady drip of revelations about how the Secret Service handled Trump’s presidential campaign may ultimately have contributed to Cheatle’s departure. Last week major outlets reported that the service declined previous requests to staff Trump following death threats he had received, and on Monday Cheatle attempted to deflect when challenged to state how many requests she had denied.

Instead, the director told Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) that the Secret Service often relied on partnerships with local law enforcement to fill gaps in its coverage, especially during election years. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) was the first to report that the Secret Service had staffed President Trump with personnel who were not trained agents.

On Monday Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) claimed to have produced evidence from an agency whistleblower showing that the Secret Service assigned three “post” officers to Trump’s Butler, Pennsylvania rally on July 13, or additional detail members responsible for securing a certain segment of the perimeter. In contrast, Jill Biden’s visit to Pittsburgh drew 12 post officers. The disclosure was uncovered as part of Sen. Grassley’s investigation into correspondence within the Secret Service about how to staff both Trump and Jill Biden, who were just 33 miles apart that day.

Specifically under investigation is how the Secret Service partnered with law enforcement organizations in and around Butler to establish a protective presence along the perimeter of the rally. Cheatle and a spokesman for the Secret Service both claimed that the area was under guard by local authorities but said during Monday’s hearing that the building where the gunman fired from was outside that zone, contradicting previous findings. Lawmakers are also seeking to understand why the Secret Service determined that an agent could not be placed on the roof of the building due to its sloped incline, which Cheatle said would have disrupted an agent’s ability to monitor Trump.

Earlier in the day, authorities reported seeing 20-year-old gunman Thomas Crooks canvassing the area where he later took the shot, though was not determined to be suspicious. During the rally, another local officer encountered Crooks crawling along the ground with a rangefinder and reported it to headquarters only for agents to find Crooks missing when they returned. The FBI is investing why another officer backed away from Crooks on the roof seconds before he fired at Trump, striking the former president’s ear before agents shot and killed him.

CNN’s Harry Enten Crushes Democrat Hopes, Breaks Down Kamala’s ‘Difficult’ Path To Victory

The New Atlantis

Democrats might be popping the champagne bottles a little too early in celebrating Vice President Kamala Harris’s rise to the top of the ticket, according to CNN’s Harry Enten.

The senior data analyst broke down Harris’s “difficult” path to victory against former President Donald Trump, pointing out that her polling numbers aren’t much better than her boss, who was essentially shoved aside by fellow leaders in the Democratic Party who feared President Joe Biden’s numbers would drag down contests for the U.S. House and Senate.

VOTE NOW: Do you blame BIDEN or TRUMP for the crashing economy?

“This has been the craziest month in American politics that I can recall,” Enten said, referencing the attempted assassination of Trump and how last month’s debate seems to have happened a lifetime ago. “But here’s the thing — for all of the excitement that Democrats have over Kamala Harris, it is going to be difficult to beat Donald Trump.”

The first hurdle, he said, will be Trump’s favorability ratings. While he has consistently remained a polarizing figure among the electorate, the Republican leader now carries his highest rating on record since he was nearly shot and killed less than two weeks ago. After speaking at the Republican National Convention, Trump carries a 40% approval by ABC/Ipsos and a 46% approval according to Quinnipiac, both records for him.

“The fact is, Donald Trump is more popular now than he ever has been before. So yes, Democrats can make this switcheroo, but they’re still going to have to beat Donald Trump – a Donald Trump who is stronger than he has ever been before,” Enten added.

WATCH:

The second obstacle is Harris’s own poll numbers against the former president. She draws a marginally better showing among voters than President Joe Biden but is still well behind the defiant frontrunner. Today, Trump leads Harris by 1%, “within the margin” of error and indicating a “close race,” said the analyst.

“But remember of course, in a national popular vote Democrats tend to do better there than they do in the Electoral College, at least when Donald Trump is running for president. So last time around when Joe Biden barely won in the Electoral College, he actually won the national popular vote by four points. So at this point, Donald Trump is running five points better… than he was four years ago against Joe Biden.”

He added. “So at this point, whether you look at the favorable rating, whether you look at horse race polling, we see that Donald Trump is doing significantly better than he was doing four years ago at this point. Kamala Harris is going to have to do better than this, of course, if she wants to win the popular vote but more than that if she wants to win the Electoral College where she’ll likely have to outperform how she’s done nationally because the fact is if you’ve got a tie in the national popular vote that is probably not good enough if you Kamala Harris and you want to win the election against Donald Trump.”

Enten’s figures are backed up by a number of polls conducted before and after President Biden announced on Sunday that he was ending his bid for a second term. The first poll conducted entirely since the weekend shows the Republican besting Harris by 2% nationally while a number of polls started before Sunday show Trump ahead by as much as 10%

BREAKING: Trump WALLOPS Kamala In EVERY Post-Drop-Out Poll

The New Atlantis

The hope of a post-dropout polling bump for Vice President Kamala Harris was dashed on Tuesday, and a slew of new numbers showed former President Donald Trump standing strong against his new opponent.

The first poll conducted fully since President Joe Biden ended his campaign on Sunday shows Trump carrying a healthy 2% lead over Harris in a national matchup. The vice president’s showing is an improvement from Biden’s last position before dropping out when he was behind Trump by 6%.

CAST YOUR VOTE: Should Voter ID Be Mandatory In The 2024 Election?

The results only get worse from there when factoring in polls that began post-dropout and continued into this week. Quinnipiac reported that Trump leads Harris 45% to 41% among 1,257 registered voters surveyed from July 19th – two days before Biden dropped out – through Sunday. Among independents, Trump holds a commanding 14-point lead.

A poll conducted by Harris and Forbes during that same period shows Trump with an even more remarkable 10-point lead over Harris among 2,169 likely voters, a margin that slims down to 9% when undecided voters are asked to choose one candidate.

And before President Biden dropped out of the race, the left-leaning Public Policy Polling reported Harris trailing Trump in four of the most pivotal battleground states of the election. Between July 11 and 12, Trump led the new presidential nominee by 6% in Pennsylvania, 8% in Arizona, 2% in Michigan, and 1% in Wisconsin.

Democrats breathed a collective sigh of relief with the prospect of Vice President Harris reenergizing the party’s base just over 100 days before Election Day. However, the latest results underscore fears that she will not be able to shake the baggage of Biden’s three and a half years in office, a period marked by increased prices on gas, groceries, and most household goods and services across the economy. Among 11 national polls Since Biden’s disastrous first debate on June 27th, Trump has led Harris by an average of 1.5%, only marginally lower than the 1.9% he averaged against Biden, the Washington Post reported.

Also weighing on Harris will be her record as vice president. She scored the lowest approval rating ever recorded by a vice president back in June, according to NBC, with 32% approval and 49% disapproval. Among several high-profile missteps is also the question about her accomplishments: she has oscillated between various roles in the administration, at some points serving as the point person for immigration, artificial intelligence, or foreign policy in Africa. None seemed to have stuck, making it harder for Democrats to point to a significant record for her to run on.

Instead, notable allies like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have pointed to Harris’ record on abortion or time as an attorney general. “I endorse Kamala Harris for President. She is a proven fighter who has been a national leader in safeguarding consumers and protecting access to abortion. As a former prosecutor, she can press a forceful case against allowing Donald Trump to regain the White House. We have many talented people in our party, but Vice President Harris is the person who was chosen by the voters to succeed Joe Biden if needed. She can unite our party, take on Donald Trump, and win in November,” Warren said two days after Biden announced he was ending his campaign.

‘WHERE IS HE?’: Martha MacCallum Grills Eric Swalwell On Biden’s Mysterious Disappearance

The New Atlantis

President Joe Biden hasn’t been seen in public since announcing he would end his reelection campaign, forcing allies to issue vague or deflective answers about his well-being as calls for his resignation ramp up.

One of those allies is liberal Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who on Monday took questions from Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum about where Biden has been since he was last seen boarding Air Force One on Friday. On Sunday he released a letter on social media stating that he was dropping out of the race and hours later endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Nine months went by without a cabinet meeting, and when there were cabinet meetings they were somewhat scripted,” said MacCallum. “I mean the things that are coming out now about what we were told about ‘Oh he’s fine, he runs circles around everyone.’” She noted that White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre canceled the daily press briefing and instead will appear on ABC’s liberal “The View” program Tuesday.

“Just for the American people, Eric, what should they think about all of this? That, I mean, a lot of people go, ‘This is crazy!’ Where is he?” MacCallum asked in remarks reported by the Daily Caller.

“Well, they should think that for the past 43 months, he hasn’t had any cabinet controversies,” Swalwell quipped, conveniently ignoring Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s mismanagement of major train derailments and widespread scheduling outages at the nation’s leading airlines.

“Because they’re not meeting apparently!” MacCallum joked. “You can’t have controversies if you don’t meet and tell everybody what to say when they walk in the room.”

WATCH:

Swalwell goes on to list the accomplishments he sees Biden leaving behind after one term in office, citing infrastructure projects along the nation’s roads and bridges and the CHIPS Act, which expands national efforts to produce semiconductors and wean off reliance on the necessary minerals and resources exported by China.

“Don’t they deserve to hear from the president then?” MacCallum asked.

“He’s going to speak to the American people,” the Democrat responded, with no intention of sharing when that might be.

Apart from his letter declining to seek a second term, President Biden has not addressed the nation, a promise initially made to reporters by the White House but has since languished. The 81-year-old has reportedly shown signs of improvement after a bout with Covid and on Monday called into a Harris rally for a brief few minutes.

“But again, his cabinet will show up at Kamala Harris’ acceptance of her nomination speech. Donald Trump wasn’t able to say that,” Swalwell said.

Washington lawmakers have increased their calls for President Biden to resign, citing his deteriorating health and decision to drop out. On Monday Sen. Steve Daines (R-MO), who chairs the Senate GOP’s campaign arm, urged the Democrat to do what’s best for the country and immediately step aside.

“If Joe Biden is no longer capable of running for re-election, he is no longer capable of serving as President. Being President is the hardest job in the world, and I no longer have confidence that Joe Biden can effectively execute his duties as Commander-in-Chief. It is out of concern for our country’s national security that I am formally calling on President Biden to resign from office,” Daines said in a statement.

Jim Jordan SCORCHES Kimberly Cheatle, Forces Her To Make Shocking Admission

Jim Jordan SCORCHES Kimberly Cheatle, Forces Her To Make Shocking Admission

The New Atlantis

A fiery congressional committee hearing on Monday saw Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle charged with failing to secure the rally site where former President Donald Trump was struck in the ear by a rifle round and nearly killed. Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) took his time with the microphone to pin Cheatle down on whether or not her agency diverted resources away from the rally to instead staff First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

Jordan, a staunch ally of President Trump, joined a chorus of calls from Republican lawmakers calling for the director’s resignation two weeks after the shooting by 20-year-old gunman Thomas Crooks. In previous interviews, Cheatle has defended her decision to not place a serviceman on the roof where Crooks was positioned, and the agency was forced to backtrack on a previous claim that it did not weaken Trump’s security force.

(VOTE NOW: Should SS Director Cheatle RESIGN Immediately?)

“The day after President Trump was shot, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said, ‘The assertion that a member of the former president’s security team requested additional resources that the U.S. Secret Service or the Department of Homeland Security rebuffed is absolutely false.’ The next day [DHS] Secretary Mayorkas said ‘That is an unequivocally false assertion. We had not received any requests for additional security measures that were rebuffed,” Jordan stated, pointing out that the Washington Post had uncovered just five days later that indeed Trump’s team had requested additional protection.

“Were you guessing or lying when you said you didn’t turn down additional requests from President Trump’s detail,” he asked.

“Neither, sir, and I appreciate the question,” started Cheatle. “What I can tell you is, for the event in Butler there were no requests that were denied,” prompting Jordan to fire back, “Well maybe they got tired of asking!”

“How many times did you turn them down ahead of that?” he asked.

“A denial of request does not equal a vulnerability,” the director responded as she flailed to defend her agency’s handling of the shooting. “There are a number of ways that risks of threats can be mitigated, with a number of different assets whether that be through personnel, whether that be through technology.”

Visibly agitated, the Republican lawmaker continued to challenge Cheatle on why her spokesman made a “huge change” in the agency’s public statements just five days later. “That’s pretty darn frustrating not just for me but for the American people!” he exclaimed.

“I hear your frustration,” she replied.

WATCH:

A viral clip of the interaction underscored the tension evident in the committee room as Republicans sought to cast the Secret Service as more interested in protecting the First Lady than Trump, forcing the clandestine presidential detection agency on the defense over the worst security failure since the shooting of President Ronald Reagan in 1981. A number of other lawmakers, including Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) have called for Cheatle’s resignation.

WATCH: Secret Service Director Gets GRILLED By House Oversight, Stumbles Over EVERY Question

The New Atlantis

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle sat for intensive questioning before a congressional committee on Monday as lawmakers sought to understand why the agency failed to prevent the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) homed in on the agency’s decision to not place an agent on top of the roof where 20-year-old Thomas Crooks was able to fire multiple rifle shots at Trump while he stood on a stage approximately 400 yards away. Cheatle had previously defended the lack of placement, saying the slope of the roof would have interfered with a sniper rifleman’s ability to protect the former president.

(VOTE NOW: Should SS Director Cheatle RESIGN Immediately?)

“At any point Saturday, did the Secret Service have an agent on top of that roof?” Comer asked the director.

“Sir, as you can imagine we’re just nine days out from this, uh, incident, and there’s still an ongoing investigation, and so I want to make sure that any information we are providing you is factual,” Cheatle replied. Asked a second time why no agent was placed on the roof, she largely repeated her answer, saying the agency was still looking into the “advanced process” for how it coordinated with local law enforcement to secure the perimeter of the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“Wasn’t that building within the perimeter that should be secured?” Comer continued, which Cheatle disputed. “The building was on the outside of the perimeter during the visit, but again that is one of the things during the investigation we want to take a look at and determine whether or not other decisions should have been made,” she responded.

WATCH:

Other Republican lawmakers have cited whistleblower testimony that the Secret Service diverted resources away from Trump’s rally to bolster the security staff around First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, who was just 33 miles away at an event in Pittsburgh. Cheatle is also expected to answer questions about staffing levels following denials from an agency spokesman that Trump was provided with lower levels of support than requested. However, that revelation came to light on Sunday after the Wall Street Journal reported that the service indeed rebuffed multiple requests from the Trump world over the years to increase his level of official protection.

Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman, was seen stalking the perimeter of the rally hours before it was set to begin but was not confronted, according to previous reports. During the rally, local law enforcement discovered him crawling along the ground with a rangefinder as he searched for a vantage point to take the shot, but by the time further response to the site came Crooks was already gone. The FBI is also investigating why a local police officer backed away from confronting Crooks on the roof literally seconds before he fired the first shot at Trump, narrowly grazing his ear before Secret Service agents tackled him to the ground.
