Vance slams Harris as VP makes bid to become Democrats’ standard-bearer

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) had some scathing words for Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democrat gears up to replace her boss, President Joe Biden

“Joe Biden has been the worst President in my lifetime and Kamala Harris has been right there with him every step of the way,” former President Trump’s running mate said in a post to X on Sunday. “Over the last four years she co-signed Biden’s open border and green scam policies that drove up the cost of housing and groceries. She owns all of these failures, and she lied for nearly four years about Biden’s mental capacity–saddling the nation with a president who can’t do the job.”

Minutes after President Joe Biden gave in to Democrats’ pleas on Sunday to withdraw his bid for reelection, he endorsed Harris for the presidency. Harris announced her intention to make her own run for the White House shortly thereafter.

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said in a statement to X.

Widely seen as the favorite to win the Democratic nomination, the feud between the presidential hopeful and Vance was ongoing even before Biden announced his decision to step down.

While speaking during an event in North Carolina earlier this week, Harris slammed the Hillbilly Elegy author for telling “a compelling story” during his speech at the Republican National Convention, but “not the full story.”

Vance often touts his roots as a rags-to-riches American dream story. After a difficult childhood, the Ohio Republican joined the Marine Corps, later joining forces with Big Tech in Silicon Valley as a venture capitalist. The leader of the so-called New Right is also known for his hard-line nationalist views on immigration and trade.

Harris explained her attack on Vance during her speech to North Carolina voters. “What is very telling is what he did not talk about on that stage. He did not talk about Project 2025, their 900-page blueprint for a second Trump term. He did not talk about it because their plans are extreme and they are divisive,” Harris told supporters on Thursday.

Trump has repeatedly disavowed the conservative “Project 2025” as far-right. Two days later, Vance leveled his own attack at Harris during a campaign rally with Trump in Michigan.

“The vice president — Kamala Harris — she doesn’t like me,” Vance complained to crowds.” “Kamala Harris said something to the effect that I have no loyalty to this country. Well, I don’t know Kamala. I did serve in the United States Marine Corps and built a business. What the hell have you done other than collect a check?”

Trump would welcome going against Whitmer as a possible Biden replacement

Former President Donald Trump said he’d like to have a presidential matchup against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), amid speculation she could lead the Democratic Party’s ticket should President Joe Biden drop his reelection bid.

During his first rally since surviving an assassination attempt, Trump polled crowds in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on who the Democratic presidential nominee should be.

“The Democratic nominee, we’re going to find out shortly, maybe, I don’t know,” Trump jeered as thousands of rally attendees cheered the former president. Trump slammed the Left for “frantically trying to overthrow the results of their own party’s primaries to dump crooked Joe Biden,” before he asked supporters whether they preferred a Biden candidacy or a challenge from Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Who would you most like to run against if you’re us, if we want to win?” Trump asked. While MAGA supporters booed Harris and indicated support for a continued Biden candidacy, the former president told the Michigan crowd he would fancy a run against the state’s governor this November.

“You have a terrible governor here who did a terrible job — Whitmer.” He added, “I’d like to run against her.”

The former president criticized the progressive governor for how she handled COVID-19, slamming Whitmer for her lockdown measures even as her husband allegedly went sailing during that period.

“Her husband was sailing in the middle of your lake, your beautiful lake — he’s out there sailing, and everybody else had to be locked up,” Trump lamented as rally attendees booed Whitmer.

Trump’s comments on Saturday come as Whitmer denies reports she might replace Biden.

Last month, Whitmer said her only political ambition was to finish out her term as governor, which doesn’t end until 2027.

While slapping down presidential rumors, the Democratic governor has stood by Biden as he fights to salvage his wobbling bid for a second term. However, Whitmer hasn’t slammed the door on concerns that the president might not be up to a second term.

Earlier this month, Whitmer suggested it would be in Biden’s best interests to take a cognitive test, as fallout for his incoherent performance during the first presidential debate continues.

Meanwhile, Whitmer has indicated she would be open to service as Vice President to Kamala Harris, should Biden’s No. 2 mount her own bid for the White House.

During an ABC interview on July 9, the Democratic governor said that being Harris’ running mate  wasn’t necessarily “something I am angling for,” yet told the network, “I’ll never say never.”

Social Security update: August direct payment worth $943 goes out in 11 days

Millions of eligible beneficiaries will receive their Supplemental Security Income payment, worth up to $943, in 11 days.

On Aug. 1, the first payments will be distributed. They are given to those living with a debilitating disability that affects one’s income, according to the Social Security Administration.

Applicants who file individually can receive up to $943 per month, couples filing jointly can receive up to $1,415, and essential persons receive up to $472. Due to inflation, the payments have increased by 3.2% since last year.

To be eligible, filers must be partially blind or have a “physical or mental condition(s) that seriously limits their daily activities for a period of 12 months or more, or may be expected to result in death.”

The maximum amount received is affected by how they apply, with varying amounts being given to individual filers, joint filers, and essential persons who provide SSI recipients with needed care.

SSI payments are separate from regular Social Security benefits. Individuals who receive Social Security payments may not qualify for SSI payments and vice versa.

Recipients can use a calculator from the Social Security Administration to figure out their total payment.

Social Security update: Final round of July payments worth $4,873 to go out in three days thumbnail

Social Security update: Final round of July payments worth $4,873 to go out in three days

The final round of July’s Social Security payments, worth up to $4,873 for the highest-income earners who retire at age 70, will go out to eligible retirees on July 24.

Here is everything to know about this month’s Social Security payments.

What is it?

In 1935, former President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, creating the Social Security Administration to manage it. The agency sends monthly checks to retirees, meant to reduce or replace their incomes once they stop working.

When am I eligible?

The earliest individuals can begin receiving Social Security payments is 62 years old.

How can I maximize my check?

The amount recipients receive depends on when they retire, the amount paid into Social Security, and the number of years paid into Social Security.

Beneficiaries can see a personalized estimate of what they can expect each month through the SSA’s calculator.

Payments largely depend on the age at which recipients choose to retire. According to the SSA, retiring at the youngest age, 62, allows up to $2,710 per month, while delaying to age 70 can allot up to $4,873 per month.

When does the check arrive?

Social Security payments typically begin on the second Wednesday of every month, and the following waves go out in the subsequent weeks. The distribution of payments depends on which day of the month a retiree was born.

Retirees born between the 1st and 10th of a month received their payments on July 10. Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th of a month obtained their checks on July 17, while retirees born on or after the 21st of a month will receive their payments on July 24.

How is it financed?

Social Security is financed by a payroll tax paid by employers and employees.

Social Security payment amounts are set to shrink unless Congress takes action to prevent it. Analysts estimate the SSA will no longer be able to give out full payments to recipients as early as 2034 due to a rising number of retirees and a shrinking number of workers.

AOC warns Biden-doubters want to boot Harris too

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) warned Friday that top Democrats aren’t interested in a Kamala Harris ticket, should President Joe Biden drop his reelection bid.

As she vowed to tell “the straight truth” about what Democrats are saying about Biden’s reflection bid in private, the feisty New Yorker told her Instagram live audience: “A lot of them are not just interested in removing the president. They are interested in removing the whole ticket.”

As a member of the “Squad,” a progressive group of House Democrats, Ocasio-Cortez wields significant influence within the lower chamber. While the New York congresswoman recently reaffirmed her support for a Biden-Harris ticket, her latest words come as a revealing expose into the intraparty dynamics playing out as the Left mulls a Biden replacement strategy.

In the early hours of Friday morning, Ocasio-Cortez spoke at length over “all of the craziness you see in the media about Joe Biden.” While Ocasio-Cortez ultimately says, “I don’t know what’s going to happen,” the congresswoman warned that a political “class of donors, decision-makers, power players” are calling the shots behind the scenes.

“I’m going to say what a lot of these people aren’t saying. If you think that there is consensus among the people who want Joe Biden to leave, that they will support Kamala, that they will support Vice President Harris, you would be mistaken,” Ocasio-Cortez said during an Instagram livestream that lasted nearly an hour.

Ocasio-Cortez admits that Biden is “really old” and isn’t polling well with voters, saying, “I’m not here to tell you that if Joe Biden is the nominee, he’s definitely going to win.” However, she warns, “I’m looking at a watch, and I’m looking at a clock, and I’m looking at a calendar.” Ocasio-Cortez worries that Democrats are running out of time — especially if they want to discard not just Biden but Harris.

The congresswoman from the Bronx expressed anger that Democratic leaders are having the conversation to replace Biden now after refusing to listen to concerns about Biden or allow alternative candidates to have their chance a year ago.

“This whole class of people who are coming with this other opinion [to drop Biden from the presidential ticket] now has supported the president the entire time, and many of those people are the same people who closed ranks against anyone who even wanted to raise this conversation a year ago,” the congresswoman said.

Roy Cooper should be Kamala Harris’s running mate if Biden drops out: Former DNC chairman

The former chairman of the Democratic National Committee said Vice President Kamala Harris should lead his party’s ticket with Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) by her side should President Joe Biden end his reelection bid.

Howard Dean floated the hypothetical Harris-Cooper ticket during an interview on Thursday.

“If the president decides not to run … I would favor a Harris-Cooper ticket, and I think we would pick up North Carolina as a result,” Dean told CNN’s Abby Phillip.

Dean served as the DNC chairman between 2005 and 2009. His words of support for Harris came after Phillip suggested some Democrats would prefer an open convention process instead of supplanting Harris right away.

“She happens to be black and she happens to be a woman,” Dean said on CNN. “Who are the two most important groups in the coalition the Democrats need to win? They are women and they are people of color.”

The former top Democrat believes proposals to push an open convention and kick Harris off the top of the ticket are absurd.

“We’re going to kick out a black woman from the perceived No. 1 slot; she’s in the No. 2 slot?” Phillips rhetorically asked. “I don’t think so. That would really roil the party.”

Biden says Trump’s Vance VP selection means MAGA politics will be ‘future’ of GOP

President Joe Biden believes Donald Trump’s decision to pick Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate has cemented the Republican Party into the mold of “Make America Great Again” politics.

“He’s decided that MAGA Republican politics is going to be the future of the Republican Party,” Biden said of Trump’s running mate selection during an interview with BET News’s Ed Gordon released Wednesday evening.

Trump announced Vance would be his vice presidential candidate on Monday. The Ohio senator, known for his hard-line nationalistic policies, formally accepted the nomination to be vice president in a wide-ranging speech at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday evening.

In a raspy voice, Biden praised Vance as “a bright guy and a hard-working senator” but worried that the Ohioan is “a really, really, really conservative MAGA Republican.”

While reiterating that violent rhetoric must be “toned down” in the wake of the assassination attempt against Trump, Biden claimed that he will “take on” Trump as he has “been taking him on: based on the issues.”

“There’s no room for violence, you can’t be talking about violence,” Biden told Gordon before criticizing past comments Trump has made and then clarified. “You can’t be saying that if I lose the election, there’ll be a blood bath, which he says, that the January 6 folks were good folks and should be released from prison.”

His words came as Republican critics held the Democratic Party at least partly responsible for raising the political temperature to a degree they say fueled the assassination attempt on Trump.

Biden says political rhetoric needs to be toned down, claiming he wants to talk about the “serious, serious differences we have on the issues and the future of the country.”

In a preview of his interview with BET News released earlier on Thursday, Biden said he would consider dropping his reelection bid on one condition.

“If I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, you got this problem and that problem,” the president told Gordon.

McConnell joins long list of Republicans calling for new Secret Service leadership

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has joined the chorus of Republicans calling for a change in leadership at the Secret Service.

McConnell said the nation “deserves answers” for the massive security breach that allowed a would-be assassin to open fire on Donald Trump, killing an attendee of the former president’s rally.

“Last week’s near-assassination of former President Trump was a grave attack on American democracy,” the Senate’s top Republican said in a post to X. “The nation deserves answers and accountability. New leadership at the Secret Service would be an important step in that direction.”

McConnell’s statement comes as Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has taken heat for overseeing the agency as they failed to prevent the assassination attempt against Trump during a Pennsylvania rally. On July 13, a gunman took shots at Trump as he spoke to roaring crowds in Butler County.

The Secret Service has been slammed for failing to stop the alleged gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, allowing him to gain access to a rooftop approximately 130 yards from Trump’s podium. Reports suggested police were warned about the would-be assassin nearly 90 seconds before the shooting, as well as other perceived lapses from law enforcement present at the rally.

McConnell’s demand for new leadership comes after other top Republicans have voiced concern that the Secret Service director remains in power.

Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and John Barrasso (R-WY) are among the Senate Republicans who have been critical of Cheatle, while multiple House conservatives have asked the embattled Secret Service leader to step down.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), and Reps. Cory Mills (R-FL) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) say Cheatle should be replaced.

Biden uses COVID-19 diagnosis as fundraising ploy against Elon Musk and ‘his rich buddies’

President Joe Biden surprised his tens of millions of social media followers on Wednesday when he tweeted two words: “I’m sick.”

The White House had reported just hours earlier that the president had been diagnosed with COVID-19, but the abruptness of Biden’s tweet from his campaign account surprised many. It became clear just three minutes later that he was using his medical diagnosis as an attempted light-hearted gateway to raise money for his shaky reelection bid.

“Of Elon Musk and his rich buddies trying to buy this election,” Biden wrote in his second post, adding a link to his campaign donation site. “And if you agree, pitch in here.”

Historically, the billionaire has supported the Democratic Party, backing Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Biden’s bid for election in 2020. However, the Big Tech mogul has slipped into the arms of the Republican Party, reportedly donating millions to a pro-Trump super PAC earlier this week.

Biden’s fundraising ploy came as Republicans celebrated on the third night of the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, seeking to emphasize their unity.

A former Secret Service agent says the agency’s head should resign immediately for her “apocalyptic security failure” after former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped assassination.

As the Secret Service defends its security protocol at the Pennsylvania rally where a shooter opened fire on Trump, Dan Bongino is calling for Director Kimberly Cheatle to step down.

Bongino served in the Secret Service for 12 years. The podcast host responded to a statement the agency put out following the assassination attempt claiming it had “added protective resources & technology & capabilities as part of the increased campaign travel tempo.”

The former Secret Service agent slammed the agency’s refusal to own responsibility for the security breach.

“This is the best technology we have’? Really? To let a sniper 150 yards away from the potential next president shoot a piece of his ear off?” Bongino told Fox News. “Kimberly Cheatle has failed Donald Trump, and honestly failed Joe Biden too”

Questions are mounting over how the shooter was able to gain access to a rooftop 150 yards from the president’s podium on Saturday evening. Witnesses say they tried to warn the Secret Service detail and police officers present at the event for minutes before Thomas Matthew Crooks pulled the trigger.

Bongino expressed surprise that Secret Service counter snipers failed to kill Crooks before he opened fire on the president.

“We’re trained out to 1,000 yards in the Secret Service with the counter-sniper team. How did they miss someone at most one-fifth of the way there? It doesn’t make any sense. And even worse, it’s broad daylight on a white roof.”

While the Secret Service has emphatically denied reports that Trump’s security detail asked for, and were denied, reinforcements, Bongino says he can prove otherwise. “I can tell you actual quotes,” he said on Sunday.

“I can tell you, and absolutely confirm, from the horse’s mouth, from multiple people … there have been repeated requests to increase the security footprint, around not just the residences of Donald Trump, but the body itself,” the former Secret Service agent said.  “And they have been rebuffed.”

Bongino ended the Sunday morning interview on a somber note. “Never forget, an uneventful failure is never a success, and the fact that Donald Trump didn’t die yesterday is no reason for anybody to take some kind of victory lap,” he said.

The FBI is now leading the investigation into Trump’s attempted assassination.
