Trump team slams ‘absolutely absurd’ attacks on Vance as VP pick takes flak for ‘cat lady’ comments

After Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) caught flak for controversial comments about “childless cat ladies,” former President Donald Trump’s campaign is hitting back with a spirited defense.

“The fact of the matter is, it’s been blatantly taken out of context,” Trump campaign advisor Chris LaCivita said during a Brian Kilmeade Show segment that aired on Friday. Asked if the Trump campaign was against “childless women,” Lacivita retorted, “No, that’s absurd. It’s absolutely absurd.”

Lacivita’s support for Trump’s running mate comes after a media firestorm erupted over comments Vance made several years ago. During a 2021 Fox News interview, the Ohio senator made observations about Vice President Kamala Harris — and other notable members of President Joe Biden’s administration — not having biological children.

“We are effectively run in this country, via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they wanna make the rest of the country miserable, too,” Vance told then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

“It’s just a basic fact — you look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC — the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children,” Vance continued. “How does it make any sense that we’ve turned our country over to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?”

After the interview resurfaced on social media this week, critics were quick to note Harris has two stepchildren, while labeling Vance as sexist and extreme.

“What a normal, relatable guy who certainly doesn’t hate women having freedoms,” former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton mocked in a post to X.

During an interview on Friday, Vance said his comments should be interpreted as “sarcasm” as he responded to the backlash. “The point is not that she’s lesser. The point is that her party has pursued a set of policies that are profoundly anti-child,” the Ohio senator told conservative commentator Megyn Kelly.

“This is not about criticizing people who, for various reasons, didn’t have kids. This is about criticizing the Democratic Party for becoming anti-family and anti-child,” he added.

However, some in his own party disagree with Vance, warning that his remarks alienate women voters.
Meghan McCain, a conservative commentator and the daughter of late Republican Sen. John McCain, posted on X “I have been trying to warn every conservative man I know – these JD comments are activating women across all sides, including my most conservative Trump-supporting friends. These comments have caused real pain and are just innately unchristian. This is not who we are.”

Vance has sought to characterize himself as the defender of the family, supporting in vitro fertilization (IVF) protection legislation in the Senate, expressing concern about the U.S.’ historically low birth rate, and supporting the childcare tax credit.

As he defended Vance, Lacivita tried to deflect criticism about Trump’s running mate back onto the attackers.

“As a matter of fact, there was a discussion today, where the follow-up — the Democrat follow-up attack is that JD Vance believes that only people with children should get certain tax breaks,” the Trump spokesman noted.

“Well, that’s called the childcare tax credit,” he continued. “So now we have the Democrat Party and the Kamala Harris campaign on record as opposing something that has been law for years which is, you know, the childcare tax credit.”

Harris makes small but steady gains over Biden’s numbers in swing states: Polls

The race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is tightening, according to polls conducted after President Joe Biden’s historic campaign exit.

While a Wall Street Journal poll shows Trump leading Harris by 2%, the GOP nominee’s performance is lagging from a 6-point lead he held against Biden before the Democrat dropped his reelection bid.

With members of Biden’s own party warning he couldn’t pull off a win against Trump this November, President Joe Biden nodded goodbye to a second term on Sunday. As Biden’s heir apparent launches her own campaign, new data indicates Harris may be regaining some lost ground.

According to a Fox News poll released Friday, Harris is 6 points ahead of Trump in Minnesota. Before Biden made his historic campaign exit, one poll conducted in June indicated he was in a dead heat with Trump, with both candidates polling at 45%.

Harris appears to have made gains in Wisconsin and Michigan as well. Earlier this month, Trump led Biden in both states by 5% and 3%, respectively, according to an Emerson College poll. The Fox News poll now shows Trump leading in Wisconsin by just 1%, and shows a tie in Michigan. Another survey conducted this week by Emerson College Polling/the Hill polling shows Trump retained a slight lead in Michigan, while he’s tied with Harris in Wisconsin.

Harris and Trump are also shooting a close race in Pennsylvania, a state critical to securing an Electoral College win. According to the Fox News poll, the two appear to be tied in the battleground state, while the Emerson College/the Hill survey shows Trump snagging a two-point lead. Before Biden dropped out of the presidential race, a New York Times poll reported the GOP leader was leading by 3 points.

Harris’s early moves show where she expects vulnerabilities thumbnail

Harris’s early moves show where she expects vulnerabilities

With just a hundred days until the presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris is moving to shore up support in critical voting blocs and swing states that could make the difference between a win and a loss this November.

From campaigning in Wisconsin and Georgia to gearing up enthusiasm from black voters and unions, here are a few ways the presumptive Democratic nominee is working to turn vulnerabilities into assets.

Stumping in Wisconsin

Two days after President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid, Harris held her first presidential campaign rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Vice President’s decision to hold the event, which was on the books before Biden made his campaign exit, indicates that she agrees Democrats need to shore up support in the swing state. While Harris’s boss narrowly flipped Wisconsin blue in 2020, former President Donald Trump is currently leading by a razor-thin margin in the battleground race.

Keeping Georgia Blue

If the Harris campaign considers Wisconsin vulnerable to Republican gains this November, it’s also gearing up for a fight in Georgia. Biden’s heir apparent is set to rally voters at the end of July in the state’s largest city. Although Georgia leans red at the state level. Biden squeaked out a win in Georgia during the 2020 presidential elections with a 49.47% to 49.24% margin of victory.

On July 30, Harris is scheduled to fire up her base in Atlanta, a Democratic stronghold that Trump has also made two visits to this year.

Pulling the black Vote

As Harris stumps to win battleground states such as Georgia and Minnesota, her visits to majority-minority cities, including Atlanta and Milwaukee, also come as an effort to boost Democratic support among black voters.

Biden’s tenure as the presumed Democratic nominee oversaw stinging losses of black support. A survey from the Cut in July showed only 64% of black women supported Biden, down from 95% who supported the Democrat in 2020.

As she steps into Biden’s shoes, Harris has been quick to focus on the voting block that has traditionally been a Democrat stronghold. Days after she appeared to become Biden’s successor in the race for the White House, Harris chose to hold one of her first campaign events at the historically black sorority Zeta Phi Beta in Indianapolis. Speaking to black voters, Harris encouraged the audience to “make history” with their support for Democrats this November.

Unions for the Win

Unions are another critical component of the Democratic coalition. During his time in the Oval Office, Biden has enjoyed critical support from big labor, and has touted himself as “the most pro-union president in American history.” The eighty-one-year-old even made history by becoming the first president to join a labor union on strike.

As he passes the torch to Harris, the vice president has moved to make her own appeal to unions. This week, she addressed the American Federation of Teachers convention in Houston, warning attendees that Trump wants to “return America to a dark past.”

Harris has also pledged she would work to sign the PRO Act into law, which expands protections for workers when unionizing or collectively bargaining.

Meanwhile, the AFT, one of the most powerful teachers unions in the country, swiftly endorsed after she declared she would make a bid for the White House.

Next Moves

As Harris stares down a deadline to create a winning campaign, she will also likely gear up outreach to Latino voters in a bid to stop GOP inroads into the minority voting block. In July, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) launched a multimillion-dollar Spanish advertising campaign in his state. While Texas is considered a token win for Trump, Harris will need to focus on outreach to Hispanics in battleground areas such as Nevada and Arizona.

Meanwhile, picking Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) as a vice presidential candidate could shore up support for Harris in Pennsylvania. The swing state will be crucial to a Democratic victory this November.

The swing state will be crucial to a Democratic victory this November.

, With just a hundred days until the presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris is moving to shore up support in critical voting blocs and swing states that could make the difference between a win and a loss this November.  From campaigning in Wisconsin and Georgia to gearing up enthusiasm from black voters and unions, here are a few ways the presumptive Democratic nominee is working to turn vulnerabilities into assets.  Stumping in Wisconsin Two days after President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid, Harris held her first presidential campaign rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Vice President Kamala Harris poses for a selfie with Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez as Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., right, and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, watch, after Harris arrived in Milwaukee, Tuesday, July 23, 2024. (Kevin Mohatt/Pool via AP) Keeping Georgia Blue If the Harris campaign considers Wisconsin vulnerable to Republican gains this November, it’s also gearing up for a fight in Georgia. Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump, left, hugs Michaelah Montgomery, a local conservative activist, as he visits a Chick-fil-A eatery, Wednesday, April 10, 2024, in Atlanta. (AP Photo/Jason Allen) Pulling the black Vote As Harris stumps to win battleground states such as Georgia and Minnesota, her visits to majority-minority cities, including Atlanta and Milwaukee, also come as an effort to boost Democratic support among black voters. Vice President Kamala Harris hugs Dr. Stacie NG Grant as she is introduced during the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.’s Grand Boulé, Wednesday, July 24, 2024, in Indianapolis. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings) Unions for the Win Unions are another critical component of the Democratic coalition. This week, she addressed the American Federation of Teachers convention in Houston, warning attendees that Trump wants to “return America to a dark past.”  Harris has also pledged she would work to sign the PRO Act into law, which expands protections for workers when unionizing or collectively bargaining. Meanwhile, the AFT, one of the most powerful teachers unions in the country, swiftly endorsed after she declared she would make a bid for the White House.  CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER Next Moves As Harris stares down a deadline to create a winning campaign, she will also likely gear up outreach to Latino voters in a bid to stop GOP inroads into the minority voting block. Social Security update: First round of August payments worth $4,873 to go out in 18 days

The first round of August’s Social Security payments will go out to retirees on Aug. 14.

Here is everything to know about this month’s Social Security payments, which are worth up to $4,873 for the highest-income earners who retire at age 70,

What is it?

Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law in 1935, creating the Social Security Administration to manage it. The agency sends monthly checks to retirees, meant to reduce or replace their incomes once they stop working.

When does the check arrive?

Social Security payments typically begin on the second Wednesday of every month, and the following checks go out in the subsequent weeks. The distribution of payments depends on which day of the month a retiree was born.

Retirees born between the first and 10th of a month receive their payments on Aug. 14. Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th of a month will receive their checks on Aug. 21, while retirees born on or after the 21st of a month will receive their payments on Aug. 28.

How can I maximize my check?

The amount beneficiaries receive depends on when they retire, the amount paid into Social Security, and the number of years paid into Social Security.

Payments largely depend on the recipients’ retirement age. According to the SSA, retiring at the youngest age, 62, allows up to $2,710 per month, while delaying retirement until age 70 can allot up to $4,873 per month.

Beneficiaries can see a personalized estimate of how much they can expect each month through the SSA’s calculator.

When am I eligible?

Starting at 62 years old, citizens are eligible for Social Security payments.

How is it financed?

Social Security is financed by a payroll tax that is paid by both employers and employees.

Social Security payment amounts are set to shrink unless Congress takes action to prevent it. Analysts estimate the SSA will no longer be able to give out full payments to recipients as early as 2034 due to a rising number of retirees and a shrinking number of workers.

On Aug. 1, the first payments will be distributed to those living with a debilitating disability that affects one’s income, according to the Social Security Administration.

To be eligible, filers need to be at least partially blind or have a “physical or mental condition(s) that seriously limits their daily activities for a period of 12 months or more, or may be expected to result in death.”

Applicants who file individually can receive up to $943 per month, couples filing jointly can receive up to $1,415, and essential persons receive up to $472. Inflation has increased these amounts by 3.2% since last year.

The maximum amount received is affected by how they apply, with varying amounts given to individual filers, joint filers, and essential persons who provide SSI recipients with needed care.

SSI payments and regular Social Security benefits are separate. Those who receive Social Security payments don’t automatically qualify for SSI payments and vice versa. Recipients can use a calculator from the SSA to figure out their payment in total.

Trump’s attacks on Kamala Harris come into focus thumbnail

Trump’s attacks on Kamala Harris come into focus

Former President Donald Trump honed attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris during a speech to Christian conservatives, weighing in on her record on a range of issues from faith to the border.

On Friday evening, the GOP nominee spoke to crowds at Turning Point USA Faith’s Believers’ Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida.

“Americans of faith are the soul of our country,” Trump said to cheers.

As he spoke at the faith-themed event, the former president was quick to criticize Harris for her stance on religious liberty.

Trump asked the crowd, “Does everyone here understand the radical left ideology Kamala supports is really militantly hostile towards Americans of faith?”

The former president told the conservatives that Harris “viciously attacked highly qualified judicial nominees simply because they were members of the Knights of Columbus, suggesting that their Catholic faith disqualified them from serving on the federal bench.”

Trump referenced an interaction Harris had with judicial nominee Brian Buescher in 2019. At the time, Harris asked Buescher, “Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?”

Trump continued the religious theme as he criticized Harris for not attending Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress on Wednesday. Harris did meet with Netanyahu on Thursday, but her comments reportedly drew the ire of Israeli officials.

“She doesn’t like Jewish people; she doesn’t like Israel,” he claimed on Friday evening.

The former president told the crowd he asked Netanyahu, “How does a Jewish person vote for a Democrat?” Trump met with the Israeli leader at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort earlier on Friday.

“We came to a conclusion that it was mostly tradition,” Trump said.

Calling Harris “a bum,” Trump switched gears to attack his Democratic opponent on the border

“She was the border czar. Now they’re trying to say she never was the border czar,” Trump said. “They’re deleting it all over the palace because we have the worst border in history.”

His words come as media outlets such as CNN, ABC News, and MSNBC are backpedaling the label networks often used to describe Harris’s role in overseeing U.S. relations with Central America in 2021.

Meanwhile, the White House says Republicans are the ones thwarting immigration reform. During a press briefing this week, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre slammed Trump for thwarting a border deal in February.

“Why are Republicans so sensitive about actually not owning up to them getting in the way of a border deal?” Jean Pierre asked. “Why won’t they own up to that? Why won’t they own up to the last president who told them not to move forward?”

Five factors Kamala Harris is using to narrow down her VP pick thumbnail

Five factors Kamala Harris is using to narrow down her VP pick

Pressure is building for Vice President Kamala Harris to pick a running mate as she stares down a tight deadline to clinch a win this November.

A new report from NOTUS has indicated she is looking for somebody with executive experience “at the highest level” and someone who can help balance the ticket.

Govs. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), Roy Cooper (D-NC), Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), Tim Walz (D-MN), and Andy Beshear (D-KY), along with Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) are all rumored to be vying for the coveted vice presidential spot.

Here’s how each of them could help Harris win over voters.

Executive experience

As Biden’s number two, Harris has faced criticism that she lacks the portfolio to lead the country. Harris could bolster her standing with voters by selecting a running mate with extensive experience. The presumed Democratic nominee could very well pick a governor, who operates as an executive at the state level, as her veep.

Several candidates fit the bill. Cooper has been elected twice as North Carolina’s chief executive. With nearly 40 years of experience in state politics, the swing state governor could have the resume Harris is looking for. Meanwhile, Beshear, Walz, and Shapiro also bring executive experience to the table. Although Shapiro has only two years of gubernatorial experience under his belt, the swing state Democrat padded his resume by serving as Pennsylvania’s attorney general between 2017 and 2023. Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) has also been floated as a running mate.

Whitmer is also widely speculated as a vice presidential candidate, but the Michigan governor has been fairly adamant that she wishes to finish her gubernatorial term.

Balance

Once rated by GovTrack as the United States’s most liberal senator, Harris shares progressive views on issues including abortion, climate change, and student loans, Selecting a centrist running mate could be critical to helping Harris win independent and swing voters this November.

Beshear could fill the slot perfectly. The moderate two-term governor beat a Trump-endorsed Republican for reelection in a red state last year. He has indicated he would be open to serving as vice president.

“I think if someone calls you on that, you at least listen,” Beshear said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Monday.

Shapiro could be another option for Harris to mull. Shapiro handily defeated the Trump-backed Doug Mastriano in 2022, 56.5% to 41.7%. Shapiro, who is Jewish, could help bridge the growing gap in Harris’s party over the Israel-Hamas conflict and win over voters alienated by progressives’ stance on the war.

Meanwhile, potential running mates such as Walz could be ruled out should Harris choose to focus on adding a moderating force to the ticket. The Minnesota Democrat is backed by progressives such as “Squad” Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and has taken a far-left stance on abortion and transgender issues.

Money

A winning campaign takes money. With just 101 days left to campaign until the election, Harris could use every dollar to her advantage. NOTUS claims Kelly is the favorite of the donor class while multibillionaire Pritzker could also be a monetary asset. A top surrogate when Biden headed the Democratic ticket, Pritzker is worth roughly $3.5 billion.

Electoral College

Winning the White House comes down to winning the Electoral College. Hailing from swing states Pennsylvania and Arizona, Shapiro and Kelly could deliver exactly that for Harris. Cooper could do the same in North Carolina, standing as the only Democratic governor to win a state that Trump also won in 2020.

Relationship

Cooper brings the electoral and executive cards, and he also checks the relationship box. Several sources told NOTUS that Harris’s relationship with Cooper is “real,” and he’s been faithful to stand by her during campaign stops in his state.

Kelly also has the added draw of a personal connection to Harris. The vice president is reportedly close with the Arizona senator and his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords.

Gabby Giffords.

, Pressure is building for Vice President Kamala Harris to pick a running mate as she stares down a tight deadline to clinch a win this November. Executive experience As Biden’s number two, Harris has faced criticism that she lacks the portfolio to lead the country. Harris could bolster her standing with voters by selecting a running mate with extensive experience. The presumed Democratic nominee could very well pick a governor, who operates as an executive at the state level, as her veep.  Several candidates fit the bill. Dan Crenshaw joins chorus questioning Trump VP pick, saying he was ‘surprised’ by Vance

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) indicated he doesn’t hold a high opinion of former President Donald Trump’s choice of a running mate during an interview with a top Democratic strategist.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) has faced a chorus of criticism since he was tapped to be Trump’s running mate. During an interview with David Axelrod released Thursday, Crenshaw voiced his own rebuke to the vice presidential candidate.

Crenshaw questioned whether someone who once called Trump Hitler should be the GOP leader’s vice president. The comment was in reference to a 2016 text Vance sent to a friend that read, “I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical a**hole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler.” Vance has since clarified that he’s changed his mind.

“It’s an interesting choice,” Crenshaw began before he referenced Vance’s controversial comment. “You know, Trump almost got assassinated recently, as we all know. I think it’s logical to say that rhetoric can lead to making crazy people even crazier. And calling Trump Hitler? What do you do with Hitler? You should kill him,” the Texan said on the Axe Files with David Axelrod.

“Wait a second; J.D. Vance calls him that,” Axelrod interrupted.

“That’s my point,” Crenshaw retorted. “I don’t understand it because I think he meant it at the time. So I think that’s concerning.”

After the former president survived an assassination attempt, some Republicans speculated that Trump-Hitler comparisons from public figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), comedian Kathy Griffin, and actor Robert DeNiro fueled the political violence.

“Democrats and liberals in the media have called Trump a fascist. They’ve compared him to Hitler,” Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) said in a post to X following the assassination attempt. “This isn’t some unfortunate incident. This was an assassination attempt by a madman inspired by the rhetoric of the radical left.”

Some Republicans have also voiced concerns over Trump’s selection of Vance since he doesn’t provide much electoral benefit or balance to the ticket.

“He was the worst choice of all the options. It was so bad I didn’t even think it was possible,” one House Republican told the Hill. “Anti-Ukraine, more of a populist. He adds nothing to the Trump ticket. He energizes the same people that love Trump.”

Conservative commentator Tomi Lahren also called the pick a “bad move,” warning that his past comments, particularly calling some in the Democratic Party “childless cat ladies,” will alienate suburban women.

Trump and other Republicans, however, have remained steadfast in their support of Vance on the ticket.

When asked if he would pick Vance again now that Harris has become the likely Democratic nominee, Trump said “No, I would do the same thing. He’s doing really well. He’s really caught on.”

WATCH LIVE: Trump speaks at Turning Point USA Faith’s Believers’ Summit

Former President Donald Trump is addressing religious conservatives at Turning Point USA Faith’s Believers’ Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump is set to deliver the keynote address for the summit on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern.

According to the summit website, the event is aimed at helping Christians “live out their faith boldly and counteract the prevailing ‘woke’ narratives” during “a pivotal moment in history.”

In a statement announcing the summit, TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk said Trump survived a recent assassination attempt only “by the Grace of Almighty God.”

Trump has used similar language to describe his brush with death. As he accepted his party’s nomination last week, Trump said, “I’m not supposed to be here tonight. I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of Almighty God. And watching the reports over the last few days, many people say it was a providential moment. Probably was.”
