Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., opened a House Homeland Security Committee hearing Thursday by demanding that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem step down, accusing her of tearing apart the agency she leads.
“You have systematically dismantled the Department of Homeland Security, put your own interests above the department, and violated the law. You are making America less safe,” Thompson said. “So rather than sitting here and wasting your time and ours with more corruption, lies and lawlessness, I call on you to resign. Do a real service to the country and just resign. That is, if President Trump doesn’t fire you first.”

As Noem began her opening remarks, protesters erupted in the hearing room, shouting “Get ICE off our streets” and “Stop terrorizing our community” before Capitol Police removed and detained them.
Noem appeared unfazed. She noted that one of her grandchildren, who was sitting in the audience, started crying during Thompson’s attack. “I don’t think she agreed with him,” Noem joked.
Joined by National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent and FBI National Security Branch operations chief Michael Glasheen, Noem defended her tenure at DHS and said the administration has strengthened border security and cracked down on international crime.
“DHS is eradicating transnational organized crime and the stopping of deadly drugs from continuing to be funneled into our communities,” she told lawmakers. “We’re ending illegal immigration, returning sanity back to our immigration system, and we’re defending against cyberattacks against our critical infrastructure.”
She warned that the U.S. faces rising threats both foreign and domestic as the nation heads into a year packed with major international events, including the 2026 World Cup and America’s 250th anniversary. “These large-scale events will be potential targets for a range of bad actors, and they come with an increased level of risk,” she said.
The tense hearing came amid rumors that President Donald Trump was weighing whether to replace Noem, speculation he rejected on Wednesday. Trump told reporters she has been “fantastic.”
Noem dismissed the chatter as well. “Oh, that’s absolutely not true,” she told Fox News ahead of the hearing. “President Trump and I are doing wonderfully. I’m so proud to work for him, and I’m going to continue to serve at his pleasure.”
