Harris helps torch your finances, then pretends she’s a firefighter thumbnail

Harris helps torch your finances, then pretends she’s a firefighter

Watching Vice President Kamala Harris talk about her economic record would make even Pinocchio blush. It’s bad enough that she’s the second-highest member of an administration that has financially gutted the middle class. But she has the gall to claim that reversing her mistakes would somehow make the problem worse. That’s the definition of projection.

With a straight face, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee has claimed the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 would weaken middle-class America. Of course, she offered no specifics to support her claim, nor any evidence to defend her own record.

So here are the facts about how the middle class has fared while Harris helped (mis)manage the nation’s economy.

Annual inflation went from 1.4% in January 2021 to over 9% in June 2022. Just 1 1/2 years after the Biden administration took power and began implementing its radical agenda, prices were rising about as much in a single month as they did in the entire year before Harris was sworn in as vice president.

Because inflation has far outpaced wage growth, the average person can buy much less today than in January 2021, despite having a much larger paycheck. For the typical family, this has amounted to a loss of $4,000 in annual purchasing power.

The impetus behind this inflationary wave has been unprecedented overspending by the government, which Harris not only helped oversee but for which she also repeatedly advocated over the last 3 1/2 years.

Since she took office, the federal debt has exploded by over $7 trillion. The Treasury has burned through about another $1 trillion in cash reserves, for a total cumulative deficit of over $8 trillion. By January 2025, that number will breach $9 trillion, according to her own administration’s estimates.

The Treasury’s unparalleled need to borrow money has pushed up interest rates, including for the $35 trillion federal debt. Taxpayers are now shelling out an annualized $1.6 trillion just to finance this burgeoning debt.

For context, the Treasury paid $140 billion in June just for interest on the debt. That was over 75% of all the personal income taxes collected that month. Harris has helped oversee the worst deterioration of federal finances since at least World War II.

But family finances are also being crushed by higher interest rates, hitting everything from mortgages to credit cards.

With home prices and interest rates launching higher, the nation has been thrown into a housing affordability crisis. The monthly mortgage payment on a median-priced home has more than doubled since Harris took office, rising over 115%. That’s an extra $14,000 per year for the same house.

People are also drowning in $1.1 trillion of credit card debt, even as the average interest rate on those outstanding balances is near a record high. Families are now paying $240 billion annually just in credit card interest, without putting a dime toward principal.

These are just some of the reasons people widely disapprove of the current administration’s handling of the economy. Families can’t make it from paycheck to paycheck with today’s stratospheric cost of living. They’re going into debt and depleting their savings just to make ends meet. In fact, the national savings rate is now less than half what it was before the pandemic.

Harris refuses to take any accountability for her role in this disaster. Worse, she claims that a conservative agenda would do precisely what her agenda has already done: eviscerate middle-class finances.

Far from hollowing out the middle class, conservatives aim to hollow out the unelected government bureaucracy that has morphed into a fourth branch of government, actively subverting the other three.

Instead of more spending and borrowing by the government, conservatives want this largess reined in and inflation ended. Conversely, Harris was one of just 13 senators who voted against Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell because she thought he was too tough on inflation — the same Powell who let inflation hit 40-year highs before raising interest rates above 1%.

Harris is an arsonist playing firefighter, simultaneously pushing for more government spending and taxes on the middle class while claiming conservatives are the ones to blame for her failures. People would be wise to remember who set the inflationary fire that burned their finances to ash.

The Left needs single women more than single women need the Left thumbnail

The Left needs single women more than single women need the Left

The presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris has seized on Sen. J.D. Vance’s (R-OH) comments regarding childless women, and it makes perfect sense, demographically speaking: Single women are now the most important voter bloc for the Democratic Party.

While married men, married women, and unmarried men all trend at least narrowly Republican, unmarried women overwhelmingly vote for Democratic candidates. Moreover, the proportion of women who have never married has grown from 20% in 1950 to 30% today, while the percentage of women who are currently married has decreased from 70% to less than 50% in the same period. The number of married households with children has similarly declined.

There are about 42 million single women in the United States, making them one of the largest voting blocs in the country. As marriage and birth rates have fallen, so has the desire among women to enter serious relationships. While nearly two-thirds of single men say they are on the dating market, only one-third of single women say they are currently looking for a relationship. This has also resulted in more isolation for a considerable number of young men, but that is a whole other problem.

The rise of single women as a voting group was accompanied by the rise of identity politics. Married men and married women largely believe that women are treated fairly, while unmarried women still hold on to older feminist ideas about gender gaps. Furthermore, single women identify with each other as a group, while married women identify more with their families, husbands, and children. Again, this is in contrast to single men, who are increasingly isolated from each other.

Women now make up about 59% of all college graduates and earn more than half of all advanced degrees. As women trend to the left, they increasingly embrace radical left-wing ideas, such as Black Lives Matter’s explicit rejection of the nuclear family. The number of women’s and gender studies degrees has increased 300% since 1990, while diversity, equity, and inclusion offices have strengthened their institutional power across the country.

The saddest part about this trend is that the policies, ideas, and behavior promoted by the Left actively harm single women.

The economic programs embraced by the Democratic Party since at least former President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” have promoted dependence on the state, sometimes explicitly so. However, Democrats have been unable to counter the fact that married women actually do far better economically and professionally than their single counterparts. They are much more likely to earn promotions or be homeowners, for example.

Modern “hookup culture,” which is especially prevalent on college campuses, has a devastating effect on the individuals involved and society more generally. Most people who engage in casual sexual encounters have reported “negative mental and emotional consequences,” and a larger number of hookup partners is correlated with more instances of depression and anxiety. Casual sex harms future relationships, as having multiple sexual partners before marriage drastically increases the likelihood of divorce.

Social liberalism and economic progressivism trap young men and women in a cycle of despair. In contrast, getting married and having children makes them more conservative. Even in extremely liberal (usually urban) areas, married people trend to the right. Married women are much happier than unmarried women, and mothers are much happier than non-mothers.

The collapse of the nuclear family as the fundamental building block of society has been the second most damaging trend of the last century, second only to the closely related decline of religion and church attendance.

Conservatives need to do a better job of articulating the importance of family life. The greatest mistake social conservatives made in the last few decades was hyper-focusing on specific problems, such as abortion or gay marriage, instead of a broader defense of the nuclear family and traditional values as a unified front. This has resulted in accumulating numerous small losses and few successes.

Right-wing public policy needs to foster the development and prosperity of nuclear families above all else, and it needs to be framed in a manner that rewards family life. This is necessary for men, women, and the nation as a whole.

Local boards call for poll worker sign-ups on Election Day thumbnail

Local boards call for poll worker sign-ups on Election Day

Local Boards of Elections are urging people to sign up to work the polls for the election on Nov. 5.

Established in 2020 by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, Aug. 1 is National Poll Worker Recruitment Day.

This day is dedicated to encouraging people to sign up as poll workers and help ensure a smooth voting process.

In Washington, D.C., the Election Day staff work from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and earn approximately $250 to $300.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and attend a four-hour training session, while supervisory workers are required to complete a full day of training.

To be eligible, poll workers must be residents of D.C., and supervisory workers must be both residents and registered voters.

Among other duties, workers are also expected to assist in preparing the precinct for two to three hours the day before the election.

“By encouraging more people to become poll workers in their communities, National Poll Worker Recruitment Day aims to address the critical shortage of poll workers, strengthen our democracy, inspire greater civic engagement and volunteerism, and help ensure free and fair elections in November and beyond,” their website says.

In 2022, EAC also launched “Help America Vote” to support recruitment efforts for election officials.

For more details on how to become an election poll worker, click here.

According to a 2022 Election Administration and Voting Survey, more than half of election officials find recruiting poll workers challenging, while nearly a quarter find it somewhat or very easy.

The data also showed that the average poll worker is 61 or older, with a decrease in younger age groups from 2020 to 2022.

In this same period, in-person voting increased from 30.5% to 49%.

While specific responsibilities and wages vary by jurisdiction, poll workers are typically assigned to set up and arrange the polling place, assist voters, confirm voter registrations, and distribute ballots.

They also support voters by assisting with voting equipment and explaining voting procedures.

If interested, people should check if they need to be a registered voter, meet age or residency requirements, or have a political party affiliation.

Where’s Joe Biden? No one cares now

Has anyone out there seen President Joe Biden recently? It’s a question that has been asked a lot over the years. Back in 2020, when he was running for president, it came up repeatedly. But that was during America’s pandemic madness, which gave Biden a veneer of plausibility for being holed up in his basement.

He doesn’t have that excuse anymore, so where is he? Not out and about. Do you see him on TV? A Wall Street Journal issue this week, to cite just one token of the situation, didn’t mention Biden in a headline until the bottom of Page 13. Even then, it was coupled to the word “feeble,” not to an official act. This wasn’t a bad news decision by the paper but an accurate reflection of the facts of Biden’s utter irrelevance.

So, who is running the country and leading the free world? It’s a bit disingenuous of me to ask that as though this is a sudden change. Some of us have been pointing out for years that Biden was never really in charge.

But what until recently was a minority view (assailed by the Democratic machine whenever uttered) has now become a general and incontrovertible understanding. Our nation knows it, and so do our enemies. Perception has caught up with reality. Democrats fraudulently pretended otherwise for years, but three months before the election and nearly another three before the end of Biden’s presidency, the United States is without a chief executive and commander in chief.

Still, just because Biden’s ineffectiveness has long been a fact doesn’t mean nothing has changed since Democrats admitted it and dumped him. It’s gotten a lot worse. That’s the point; the party coup didn’t fix the problem, for Biden is still president. That Democrats are willing to leave an empty suit notionally in charge until Jan. 20 is not reassuring about their interest in actual governance.

Biden’s meltdown wasn’t restricted to his June debate with former President Donald Trump. The vaporization of his authority has continued, and it sharply accelerated after he bowed out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Lame duck” doesn’t even begin to describe it. There has never been a collapse of presidential authority as instantaneous as this. He has sunk without a trace, dwindled to the foot of Page 13, and entirely disappeared from the national stage.

So, back to the question of who is running the country. Clearly, left-wing apparatchiks in the White House and engine room of the Democratic machine will oversee a simulacrum of democratic government. But who is running them?

The question is answered by looking at the way the party endorsed Harris. If you want to know who the most important person is in a meeting, look at who took his seat last.

The first person to endorse Harris was Biden himself, and it was his last exercise of genuine power in a five-decade political career. It forced the hand of the other Democratic bigwigs, some of whom wanted a better candidate than Harris. Initially, several congressional small fry swam into position behind her. Then came bigger fish. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) endorsed the veep, and that was a big deal but not the biggest. Harris’s anointing became a certainty after the charade of her meeting with the Democrats’ official top two, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (also NY).

But even then, the last Democrat to take his seat at the celebratory gathering of joyful anti-Biden plotters held out for two more days, building tension and underscoring his continued dominance over the party of the Left and the subordination of whomever it chooses as its figurehead.

Barack Obama, who has served his maximum two terms in the White House, took his seat at the Kamala party, at which point everyone could breathe a sigh of relief, secure in the knowledge that no one else mattered. Obama hadn’t wanted her, but he wasn’t going to relinquish the levers of power in a fit of pique.

He and Michelle called their newly accepted subordinate, and Harris was taped wreathed in smiles of gratitude. “Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” Obama said with characteristically sonorous dissimulation.

Note that even in his congratulations, the former president pointed out that it would be he and Michelle who would get the credit if Harris made it to the Oval Office. The subtext, unspoken publicly, was, “Don’t think you built this yourself. If you make it to the presidency with the help of our well-oiled election engine and our coalition, you will owe us.”

Harris got the message and answered dutifully, “Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me. I’m looking forward to doing this with the two of you.” That’s it. She knows her place in the hierarchy. She is happy and grateful for the opportunity to be the face of Obama’s fourth term in office.

Social media condemns ‘glorified male violence against women’ in Olympic boxing match

The 2024 Paris Olympics have received major pushback online after allowing a boxing match with an athlete believed by many to be a biological male to commence, which ended less than a minute after the biological female opponent forfeited the fight.

The fight between Imane Khelif of Algeria and Angela Carini of Italy ended after only a couple of punches were thrown, one of which hit Carini in the face. As the match ended, Carini could be seen on her knees visibly upset over forfeiting the match.

“Call me crazy, but It’s almost as if women don’t want to be punched in the face by a male as the world watches and applauds,” women’s sports activist and Outkick host Riley Gaines wrote on X. “This is glorified male violence against women.”

Author J.K. Rowling, a vocal critic of transgender women, spoke very harshly against the International Olympic Committee in the wake of the match, writing that Carini “just had everything she’s worked and trained for snatched away” because the IOC “allowed a male to get in the ring with her.”

“You’re a disgrace, your ‘safeguarding’ is a joke and #Paris24 will be forever tarnished by the brutal injustice done to Carini,” the Harry Potter author wrote.

On Tuesday, the IOC defended its policy to allow transgender athletes to compete in the Games, arguing it is following rules previously used by the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. IOC spokesman Mark Adams contended that Khelif competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and has been boxing “for a very, very long time.”

Former Democratic lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard has spoken against the IOC’s decision, arguing that it is “the consequence of the insane trans ideology.” She added that the IOC is “putting actual women in danger” by allowing transgender athletes to compete against them.

In the wake of Carini forfeiting her match, #IStandWithAngelaCarini reached the top trending spot on the social media platform X.

Transgender issues will be a factor in the presidential election, which is expected to be between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party. Harris has been endorsed by the Advocates for Trans Equality organization and has also received the backing of the Human Rights Campaign.

Trump, meanwhile, has stated in 2022 that he would implement a “ban on men participating in women’s sports” should he become president again. The former president has also vowed to end transgender surgeries for minors in a second presidency.

California is less safe today because of Kamala Harris thumbnail

California is less safe today because of Kamala Harris

For three and a half years, we have experienced the ramifications of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s disastrous administration, which has left people less safe as crime has surged. In California, we’ve had a front-row seat to Harris’s soft-on-crime policies for two decades. Having suffered from her far-left, extreme agenda that for years prioritized criminals over Californians, we know better than anyone that the last thing Harris deserves is a promotion to the White House.

As California’s attorney general, Harris wrote ballot summaries for ballot initiatives that California voters would consider before casting their votes. Two specific ballot initiatives that passed with the help of Harris had devastating impacts on crime in the state.

In 2014, Proposition 47, the horribly mistitled “Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act,” infamously made theft of up to $950, along with a series of other crimes, a misdemeanor and enabled criminals not to fear consequences for their actions. In the aftermath of its passage, then-Attorney General Harris was criticized for her summary that left out critical information and failed to offer voters a full picture of the problematic initiative.

She did not inform voters that Prop. 47 would restrict DNA collection from criminals, which is often used to solve other unrelated, and at times more serious, crimes. She also prevented independent analysts from writing a thorough and transparent impact statement on the proposition for voters considering the initiative when she refused to give the analysts access to critical information on gun thefts.

Today, the impacts of Prop. 47 are more prevalent than ever, with smash and grabs and rampant theft regularly dominating the nightly news. It’s so bad that more than 900,000 California voters helped qualify a new ballot initiative for this November’s ballot to clean up much of the mess created by Prop. 47. Harris bears real responsibility for the lasting effects of this dangerous law, which to this day empowers criminals across the state.

Proposition 57, the equally misleading “Public Safety and Rehabilitation Act,” also received a glowing ballot summary from Harris in 2016. As she put it, the law “allows parole consideration for persons convicted of nonviolent felonies.” What she doesn’t tell you is nonviolent felonies include such atrocious and blatantly violent acts as raping an unconscious person, human trafficking involving sex acts with a child, and domestic violence involving trauma, to name a few. Even prominent California Democrats have called out this harmful omission from the summary.

In 2022, in a horrific event so close to the California Republican Party’s Sacramento office that a stray bullet went through our window, Smiley Martin participated in a shootout with rival gang members that killed six people. He was free on that day because his previous domestic violence conviction was somehow considered a nonviolent offense, and he had been released from prison early.

Harris’s atrocious soft-on-crime record in California extends far beyond ballot language. As San Francisco district attorney, she refused to seek the death penalty against a gang member who murdered a police officer, Isaac Espinoza, despite pressure from fellow Democrats to do so. The late Sen. Dianne Feinstein even expressed support for the death penalty at Espinoza’s funeral.

Harris again did not seek the death penalty against an illegal immigrant gang member who murdered a father and his two sons. Separately, San Francisco police at the time accused Harris of being slow to prosecute in murder cases, while in drug cases, she offered favorable deals to avoid trial and refused to prosecute entirely in other cases.

As one of California’s U.S. senators, her radical, soft-on-crime stances grew. She supported defunding the police, including then-Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s plan to slash $150 million from the Los Angeles Police Department’s budget. She repeatedly called to “reimagine” the role of police in our communities.

As Biden’s “border czar,” Harris allowed millions of illegal crossings into our country as the border sat wide open, but her failure is hardly a surprise if you saw her record in California. As district attorney, she expressed support for the city’s sanctuary city status. As senator, she advocated “starting from scratch” with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement while saying we should “reexamine” ICE. She also supported decriminalizing illegal border crossings and signed onto a letter arguing that Title 42, which temporarily closed the border, violated federal law.

Today, Harris is gleefully touting her background in public safety as a reason she should be our nation’s next president. But trust a Californian who has seen firsthand the disastrous consequences of Harris’s real record on public safety: It is absolutely disqualifying, and she should not be anywhere near the White House.

Menendez used campaign funds to finance stay at luxury hotel during trial

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) used a campaign credit card to fund his stay at the luxury Millenium Downtown New York hotel during his corruption trial, racking up a near-$2,600 bill, according to FEC records reviewed by the Washington Examiner.

According to the New Jersey Globe, Menendez spent most weeknights at the hotel and received a government employee discount for his stay. The nightly rate was nearly $189.

Menendez only lives 16 miles away from the hotel in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. His campaign account can be self-funded or funded by outside donors such as everyday New Jerseyans.

The high-rise hotel is located in the financial district near the One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial Museum. It has views of the city’s skyline, the Hudson River, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Menendez was recently convicted in his corruption trial of 16 counts, including bribery, extortion, wire services fraud, obstruction of justice, and acting as an agent of a foreign government. He faces decades in prison, though he plans to appeal. The senator has since resigned his position effective on Aug. 20.

His successor hasn’t been named yet by Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ), but that person will take Menendez’s seat until the November election. It’s unclear whether Menendez, who is currently running for reelection as an independent, will drop his bid. If Menendez fails to take office this fall, it will be the first time since 1993 that he’s out of Congress.

If he does, it will leave Democratic nominee Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ), who is favored to win in the blue state, and Republican nominee Curtis Bashaw to duke it out for the seat.
