After months of intense jabs and threats traded on both sides, President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani had a cordial meeting at the Oval Office on Friday that was described by President Trump as productive and encouraging,
During the campaign cycle, President Trump slammed Mamdani for endorsing communist groups and policies in the past, referring to him as a “communist lunatic” who would destroy New York City. Mamdani’s rhetoric was similar, as the mayor-elect has repeatedly referred to the president as a “fascist” and has vowed to oppose him at all costs.
Trump endorsed Mamdani’s rival, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and has vowed to withhold federal funding from the city if Mamdani interferes with ICE operations or defies the federal government in other ways, which he has vowed to do.
Despite being vehemently opposed to each other, the two men struck a positive tone ahead of the meeting. President Trump told Fox News that he was optimistic for the meeting, while Mamdani stated that he was open to working with the White House on any matters that could improve New York City.
The 90-minute private discussion, followed by a joint press availability, continued with the cordial atmosphere, with the two laughing off past insults and focusing on common ground like housing, groceries, utilities, crime reduction, and the cost of living.

Trump warmly patted Mamdani on the arm and praised his “incredible race,” saying, “We’ve just had a great meeting. A really good, very productive meeting. We have one thing in common — we want this city of ours that we love to do very well,” and congratulating him on beating “a lot of smart people.”
Mamdani echoed the positivity, describing it as “a productive meeting focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City,” and adding, “I appreciated the time with the president” while emphasizing their talks on rent and food prices.
When reporters asked the two about the previous barbs traded between each other, both men laughed them off.
One notable moment occurred when Mamdani was asked about his comments describing Trump as a fascist. As the mayor-elect began to give a roundabout answer, Trump told him it was “ok to say yes” before slapping him on the arm once again.

It is unclear whether the warm relationship will last, as both leaders are vehemently opposed to each other on a policy level.
Mamdani has vowed to resist federal immigration operations by any means necessary and has advanced a number of controversial policies, including a rent freeze, government-owned grocery stores and more.
He has also doubled down on his promise to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit New York, including during the annual United Nations General Assembly. Mamdani has claimed that he will transform New York into a “city of international law” by pursuing an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant against Netanyahu, which is not recognized by the United States.
