U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced Friday that she will be resigning from congress, bringing an abrupt end to an eventful tenure in Washington just days after President Donald Trump rescinded his endorsement and vowed a primary challenge amid mounting tensions between the two.
In a 10-minute video statement, Greene said she explained her decision and said she’s “always been despised in Washington, D.C., and just never fit in.” Her last day will be January 5, 2026, leaving a vacancy in a deep red district that will need to be filled through a special election.
Greene’s announcement follows a dramatic break with President Donald Trump after several weeks of mounting criticism. The congresswoman drew the ire from some sections of the president’s base for embarking on a media tour across several left-wing outlets and programs, throughout which she attacked the Trump agenda on the economy, the government shutdown, foreign policy and more.
She also praised former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), suggested that Trump was prioritizing “foreign countries” over the American people and criticized his mass deportation agenda.
President Trump eventually weighed in on the situation in dramatic fashion, announcing last week that he would be rescinding his endorsement of a once staunch ally and supporting a primary challenge against her. Greene responded by insinuating that Trump was in the “Epstein files” after vehemently defending him against false allegations the issue for years.
“Americans are used by the political -industrial complex of both political parties, election cycle after election cycle, in order to elect whichever side can convince Americans to hate the other side more. And the results are always the same. No matter which way the political pendulum swings, Republican or Democrat, nothing ever gets better for the common American man or woman,” the congresswoman said in her video announcement Friday.
She went on to criticize the Republican House majority for lack of legislative action, noting that she has brought several bills to the floor in line with the Trump agenda that never advance.
“My only goal and desire has ever been to hold the Republican Party accountable for the promises it makes to the American people and put America first. And I have fought against Democrats’ damaging policies like the Green New Deal, wide -open, deadly, unsafe border policies, and the trans agenda on children and against women. With that has brought years of nonstop, never ending personal attacks, death threats, lawfare, ridiculous slander and lies about me that most people could never withstand even for a single day,” she went on to say.
“It has been unfair and wrong, not only to me, but especially to my family, but it’s been wrong to my district as well. I have too much self -respect and dignity. I love my family way too much, and I do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president that we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms and in turn be expected to defend the president against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me.”

Greene’s resignation will further thin the Republican House majority, which could grow by one next month based on the results of a special election to replace former Rep. Mark Green in Tennessee. Republicans are favored in the district that went to President Trump by 22 points last November, though Democrats will be hoping to capitalize on solid election turnout in New Jersey and Virginia this past Election Day.
As for Greene’s future prospects, some political analysts have linked her to a potential White House bid in 2028. The congresswoman has not yet provided any details on future plans, while the president has not yet commented on her resignation.
