Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who is currently running to secure the Republican nomination for governor of California, said during a recent interview with Fox News’ Lara Trump that California’s elections processes are “completely rigged” to keep Democrats in power.
“Our election process has been rigged to keep the Democrat Party in power, honestly, since the 60s. And every 20 years, people get so fed up with it, they elect a Republican governor. And that’s where we are right now,” Bianco said.
Bianco went on to criticize the recent passage of Proposition 50, an ambitious gerrymandering project introduced by Governor Gavin Newsom that draws out five seats currently controlled by Republicans. California voters opted to back the proposal after national Democratic Party organizations and senior leaders, including President Barack Obama, flooded the Golden State with support for the measure.
Newsom’s plan has drawn significant criticism from Republicans due to the reality of the state’s previous maps, which were drawn by an independent commission at the behest of voters, when compared with the new maps.
Under the maps created by California’s “independent” redistricting commission, Republicans control just 17 percent of the state’s congressional districts despite the fact that 40 percent of voters went for President Donald Trump back in November. Under the new Texas maps — which Newsom claimed Proposition 50 was in “retaliation” to — Democrats will control 21 percent of the available seats after receiving 42 percent of the vote.
“The gerrymandering, districting, really, for me, being at the head of law enforcement, the leader of law enforcement, the Constitution and the constitutional rights of Californians actually matter. And our current government, they despise both the state constitution and the federal constitution,” Bianco told Fox News.
“So this gerrymandering of this election to keep them in power, it made no sense. We know that there was a lot of dishonesty in the advertising. I think it’s going to backfire on what they did here because it’s one more nail in the coffin of we’re tired of being lied to.”

While Bianco or any other eventual Republican nominee will be facing an uphill battle in the blue stronghold, some recent polling has indicated that the state’s gubernatorial race could be somewhat competitive due to voter concerns on cost of living, homelessness and other issues.
A new UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll released earlier this month found support for Rep. Katie Porter, the Democratic Party frontrunner, losing support after a series of public tirades and instances of verbal abuse directed towards her staff.
Once the clear front-runner, the Democrat now trails Sheriff Bianco, the poll shows. But the race remains wide open, as nearly half of California voters still have not picked a candidate.
“She’s the leading Democrat among the various ones that are in there right now,” said poll director Mark DiCamillo. “But it’s because nobody really on the Democratic side has really jumped out of the pack. It’s kind of a political vacuum at the moment.”
