U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, following up on a move that has been considered over the past several weeks.
“It will be done in the strongest and most powerful terms,” Trump told Just The News editor John Solomon. “[The] Final documents are being drawn.”
The Muslim Brotherhood, which boasts millions of members worldwide, advocates for the implementation of Sharia Law in society. The multi-national group was established in 1928 by Egyptian schoolteacher Hasan al-Banna in Ismailia, Egypt, has emerged as a leading transnational Sunni Islamist movement aimed at promoting Islamist principles in society and politics.
It is designated as a terrorist group in countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates due to its historical involvement in violence and opposition to secular governance.
According to Just The News, the designation will follow through with a plan Trump has been eying since his first term in office. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously revealed that plans were being drafted to move forward with the designation earlier this year.
“Yeah, all of that is in the works, and obviously there are different branches of the Muslim Brotherhood, so you’d have to designate each one of them,” the secretary said back in August, emphasizing that the process takes time.
“But let me just tell you that there’s a process which I didn’t fully appreciate till I came into this job, and I know people don’t want to hear about processes, but because these things are going to be challenged in court, right? Any group can say, ‘Well, I’m not really a terrorist – that organization is not a terrorist organization,’ so you have to show your – you have to show your paperwork.”

The move comes just days after Texas Governor Greg Abbott moved to designate the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), as terrorist organizations in the Lone Star state.
“The Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR have long made their goals clear: to forcibly impose Sharia law and establish Islam’s ‘mastership of the world. The actions taken by the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR to support terrorism across the globe and subvert our laws through violence, intimidation, and harassment are unacceptable,” Abbott announced in a press release.
Both groups and their affiliates will now be prohibited from buying or owning land in Texas, among other restrictions. “These radical extremists are not welcome in our state and are now prohibited from acquiring any real property interest in Texas,” the governor said.
Tuesday’s press release brought attention to the decades-long history of violence and extremism associated with the Muslim Brotherhood. “WHEREAS, Hassan al-Banna, who founded the Muslim Brotherhood almost 100 years ago, professed that ‘Jihad is an obligation from Allah on every Muslim and cannot be ignored nor evaded’ and that Jihad means ‘the fighting of the unbelievers, and involves all possible efforts that are necessary to dismantle the power of the enemies of Islam including beating them, plundering their wealth, destroying their paces of worship and smashing their idols,” Abbott wrote.
In addition to President Trump’s federal designation, a bipartisan group of lawmakers have introduced legislation to codify the designation in the House. A Senate version of the legislation has also been introduced by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX).
