President Donald Trump did little over the weekend to break a stalemate between Republicans and Democrats and resolve the government shutdown, as it appears to be a political victory for the GOP. Instead, he partook in one of his favorite pastimes: watching cable news, which sent him into a rage on Sunday after a beloved Fox News reporter aired a “politically correct” interview with a top U.S. Senate Democrat.
Supportive voices in conservative media have echoed Trump’s accusation that Democrats are to blame for extending the shutdown into its second week as they seek to reinstate healthcare subsidies for millions, including some illegal migrants. Trump and the majority leaders in the House and Senate have claimed that the only intent of their obstruction is to grant emergency healthcare treatment to illegal immigrants.
However, that allegation was not raised during an interview with Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), who was asked by Fox News’ Peter Doocy to elaborate on the importance of healthcare subsidies that Republicans have argued should be part of a separate discussion after the government is funded.
Doocy’s kid-glove treatment of Kelly sent Trump into a spiral on Truth Social, where he took credit for Fox’s recent success in the ratings sweep and warned the network to either “get on board or get off board.”
“Why is FoxNews and Peter Doocy putting on Democrat Senator Mark Kelly to talk about, totally unabated or challenged, Healthcare?” Trump wrote. “The FAKE SPIN is so bad for Republicans that it is hard to believe that we WIN.”
The president’s salvo is a new front in his war with mainstream media outlets. Much of his past ire has been directed at CBS News, ABC News, or the New York Times for their fawning coverage of Kamala Harris during the 2024 campaign.
However, Trump sued Fox owner Rupert Murdoch this year for failing to stop his other outlet, the Wall Street Journal, from releasing a story alleging Trump drew a crude birthday card for Jeffrey Epstein in 2003.
“It will be very unfair, in the future, when they don’t have ‘TRUMP’ to fight for them. Therefore, we should fix it, NOW! I’m watching this Interview. It just doesn’t end. Fox should either get on board, or get off board, NOW, but at this point, it just doesn’t make any difference to me,” the post continued.
“They suck up the Ratings because of us, and then spin them in the Democrats’ direction,” Trump said. “They refuse to put up Polls that correctly show me at 65% in Popularity, a Republican RECORD, but if I have a fake bad ‘Poll,’ many of which are done by Fox (One of the worst ‘Pollsters’ out there is the FoxNews Poll), they put them up immediately, and with gusto.
“Republicans are so tired of this fight with Fox always trying to be so ‘politically correct!’” Trump concluded. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
