President Donald Trump hinted at the construction of a new monument in Washington, D.C., in a social media post early Saturday.
The new monument mirrors Paris’s Arc De Triomphe, and in the post appears to be across the Potomac River from Arlington National Cemetery.
The president was spotted peeking at the design, drawn up by Harrison Design, during a meeting in the Oval Office with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Trump is considering construction of the arch in celebration of America’s 250th birthday next year, the Washington Post reported.

Justin Shubow, president of the National Civic Art Society, presented the idea to the president and others, and they were enthusiastic about the project, the outlet reported.
The new arch also appears similar to the Grand Army Plaza Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch in Brooklyn. It would have two eagles with a gold-winged angel on top, with a traffic circle around it.
Nicolas Charbonneau, who works at Harrison Design, shared images of the arch last month, saying it serves as a “closer study of what the #America250 arch could be.”
The America 250 arch was intended to be temporary, but White House officials are considering plans aimed toward a permanent building.
Eric Jenkins, an architect and former educator at the University of Maryland and Catholic University, told the Architect’s Newspaper that the arch would “disrupt a symbolic connection” between “the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington House and Arlington National Cemetery’s ‘most hallowed ground.’”
“Connection is the key—linking, bridging, reconciling. That’s what the Memorial Bridge does. It unites Lincoln’s legacy with Arlington, once home to Robert E. Lee, now a site of national mourning. The arch would more than likely obscure John F. Kennedy’s eternal flame that can be seen from the Lincoln Memorial on dark nights,” Jenkins said.
“Inserting a grand, false monument into that axis and space breaks that symbolism. It risks replacing subtlety with spectacle, solemnity with show. Instead of healing, it imposes,” he added.
Trump said last month that he wants to see “beautiful buildings” in D.C. The arch plans come after the president unveiled grand plans to create a large ballroom attached to the White House, which is likely to change the appearance of the grounds vastly. It drew condemnation from Democrats, and some suggested he wants the ballroom to use for a potential third term.

It’s not the first time an arch has been proposed in the nation’s capital.
The National Monuments Foundation proposed an arch, named Millennium Gate, in 2000. The turn of the millennium was thought to be an occasion that should be enshrined in the city’s architecture.“The United States should build something at this point in time, at the height of its power, prosperity and influence,” NMF said.
