New details have emerged about the “sadistic” treatment Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-CA) gave to her ex-husband, according to recently released divorce records.
The frontrunner for governor of California is under scrutiny following viral videos that show her feuding with reporters and berating members of her staff. Now, the allegations against Porter are reaching into the realm of violence, with her former husband frequently a victim of her rage.
“Get out of the f***ing shot,” the 51-year-old single mom screams at a female staffer in a candid clip. The leaked footage followed a contentious interview between Porter and CBS News journalist Julie Watts, during which she was asked how she planned to win over Trump supporters in her bid for governor.
“How would I need them in order to win, m’am?” Porter asks with obvious disdain in her eyes.
The steady drip of unvarnished Porter clips continued with the release of another video where the liberal lawmaker shot a death stare at a staffer who couldn’t manage to get the lighting quite right for a virtual town hall.
“I need the lights off… the bright lights,” Porter says as the lights go down. “Not that dark,” she snaps before turning off the camera’s video and sound.
The Iowa native’s temper was present during her 2013 divorce when her ex-husband alleged she once poured scalding-hot mashed potatoes on his head during an argument. The couple eventually filed a restraining order against one another.
Copies of the divorce proceedings, reviewed by the Daily Mail, paint the picture of a California transplant who was never “Midwest nice.”
According to the documents, Porter flew into a rage during the spring of 2006 when she accused her husband of not cooking the potatoes right for dinner. With their oldest child, Luke, sitting nearby in his highchair, Porter allegedly screamed, “Can’t you read the f***ing instructions?”
“She then took the ceramic bowl of steaming hot potatoes and dumped it on my head, burning my scalp,” Matthew Hoffman stated.
As the sole breadwinner, Porter married Hoffman in 2003 following her graduation from law school. Hoffman cared for the couple’s only child at the time as a stay-at-home dad in their Irving, Calif., home.
But the early years of their marriage were filled with Porter’s “extreme anger” and a “history of snapping and screaming at [him] and the children,” he explained in court records. Porter would go so far as to “claw and scratch her arms” to make it appear as if Hoffman had attacked her.
Other aphorisms of Porter were frequently “you f***ing idiot!” and “you’re f***ing incompetent,” according to the filing.
“She would not let me have a cell phone because she said, ‘You’re too f***ing dumb to operate it,’” Hoffman testified.
In another example, Hoffman claimed that Porter once came home in 2012 to an unclean house, causing her to smash a glass coffeepot on the countertop, shattering it into pieces.
“This house is a mess! You f***ing slob! You’re incompetent! What the f*** do you do all day!” she screamed, he alleged. “Look how f***ing dirty this is.”
Porter faces a crowded Democratic field and holds a slim lead in most polling, according to an RCP average.
