Most support bringing US troops home from Iraq, Syria: Survey

Most Americans support bringing U.S. servicemembers home from Iraq and Syria, saying that the military should generally have less involvement in the Middle East, according to a new survey shared first with The Hill.

The Thursday poll, from Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) and YouGov, found that 62 percent of U.S. adults at least somewhat support bringing troops home from Iraq. Just over a quarter, 27 percent, neither support nor oppose it, while 11 percent at least somewhat oppose bringing troops home from Iraq.

Support for bringing troops back from Iraq was reflected among the majority of Democrats, Republicans and independents.

Most Americans, 61 percent, supported bringing back all servicemembers from Syria. Just over a quarter, 27 percent, are neither opposed nor supportive of the effort, while 12 percent at least somewhat oppose bringing troops home, according to the poll.

Like Iraq, the majority of Democrats, Republicans and independents are at least somewhat supportive of bringing troops home from Syria.

In April, the U.S. military began withdrawing hundreds of service members from Syria.

“These findings confirm what we’ve seen for years: veterans and the broader public want a foreign policy focused on restraint, accountability, and the national interest,” CVA executive director John Vick said in a statement. “Americans across the political spectrum recognize that after decades of fighting in the Middle East, our military presence in places like Iraq and Syria no longer serves a clear strategic purpose.”

Nearly six-in-10, 58 percent, of respondents said that the U.S. military should generally have somewhat less involvement in the Middle East. About 32 percent said the military should have the same amount, while 10 percent said the U.S. forces should be more involved in the region.

The majority of U.S. adults, 58 percent, at least somewhat agree with President Trump that the Iraq War was a “big, fat mistake.” Just over a quarter, 26 percent, neither agreed nor disagreed with the statement. About 16 percent at least somewhat disagreed.

“A majority of respondents, including Democrats and Republicans, agree with President Trump’s statement that the Iraq War was a mistake, and a strong majority support bringing our troops home from Iraq and Syria,” Vick said in a statement.

“Our warfighters should only be sent into harm’s way for missions that are vital to our nation’s security—and those missions simply do not exist in these conflicts at present day,” he continued.

The survey was conducted from Sept. 19-23 among 1,000 respondents, including veterans, military families and the general public. The margin of error was 3.7 percentage points.
