The Nobel Committee will announce on Friday who it has chosen to receive its annual Peace Prize, perhaps the most distinguished among its laureate categories and one that President Donald Trump has sought since his first term in office.

While it’s not expected that Trump will receive the award this year, given the brief time between the committee’s announcement and his historic peace agreement with Israel and Hamas, the possibility is there nonetheless. Now, calls are growing for the 47th president to be rushed to the front of the line among an impressive list of nominees who have each contributed in their own way to global peacekeeping efforts.

The 79-year-old’s quest for the Peace Prize is a reflection of the injustice he doubtlessly feels at watching former President Barack Obama receive the award during his first year in office, a jaw-dropping decision with scant justification. Trump has been the most vilified wartime president since perhaps George W. Bush at the height of the Iraq war.

But his breakthrough with Israel and Hamas could negate the hatred he has received continuously since returning to office, and his selection on Friday would place him among exalted peers who he’s long felt were less deserving.

“We settled seven wars. We’re close to settling an eighth. And I think we’ll end up settling the Russia situation, which is horrible,” Trump said Wednesday when asked about the possibility of his receiving the Peace Prize. “I don’t think anybody in history settled that many. But perhaps they’ll find a reason not to give it to me.”

If he doesn’t win, Trump added, “it’ll be a big insult to our country, I will tell you that.”

“I don’t want it. I want the country to get it,” he told the Washington Post while insisting he is not politicking for the prize, which those familiar with the award process say can taint the chances of a nominee. Still, Trump’s obvious interesting in getting his own Nobel has pushed enemies like Israel and Hamas to the bargaining table, a development unthinkable under the Biden administration.

One Israeli source said the timing of the Nobel announcement may have pushed both sides to the bargaining table as it became apparent that Trump wanted to beat the buzzer.

The “Friday morning deadline is shaping the timeline, the announcement of the Nobel Committee in Oslo,” Col. Doron Hadar, who until last year commanded the Israeli Defense Force, told the outlet. “Everyone understands this timeline, and that’s why I believe that by [Thursday] evening, there will already be a declaration that the sides have reached agreements.”

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted an artificial image of Trump with the Nobel Prize around his neck.

“Give @realDonaldTrump the Nobel Peace Prize – he deserves it!” it wrote on Thursday on X.
