A massive explosion ripped through a Tennessee bomb factory Friday morning, leaving multiple people dead and at least 13 others missing, officials said, in what authorities are calling a “devastating blast.”
The fiery explosion erupted around 7:45 a.m. at the Accurate Energetic Systems facility — a major munitions manufacturer located on the Hickman-Humphreys County line, roughly 65 miles west of Nashville. Witnesses described a thunderous boom that rattled windows and sent plumes of smoke rising high above the rural countryside.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed to reporters that there were “some” fatalities and that several employees remain unaccounted for, though he did not release an exact number. “We’re trying to take as much time as is needed right now. We’re prioritizing people that are involved, their families and trying to be very compassionate toward them,” Davis said.
Officials said the explosion completely leveled “one whole building” at the site, which sits miles from any nearby homes or businesses. Hickman County Mayor Jim Bates told ABC News that at least 13 people remain missing, while Humphreys County EMA Director Odell Poyner told WKRN that 19 employees were believed to be inside at the time — and none have been located.

Emergency crews are keeping a safe distance as they assess the scene, with officials warning that a secondary explosion remains a serious concern. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has joined local authorities to investigate the cause of the disaster.
Security footage from a residence more than 20 miles away captured the terrifying moment a single, ear-splitting “boom” echoed through the region, shaking the ground and jolting the camera, according to News Channel 5.
Authorities have urged the public to stay clear of the area and expect road closures for several days as investigators sift through the wreckage in search of answers.
Accurate Energetic Systems describes itself as “a leader in the energetics and explosives industry,” according to its website, which states that the company has been in operation since 1980. “Whether for military acquisition offices, defense and aerospace primes, or commercial demolition sectors, AES is your partner in achieving superior energetic solutions,” the company’s site states.
