Live updates: Trump lauds Israel-Hamas peace deal, on brink of approval; Johnson calls out Dems on military pay lapse

Israel and Hamas are expected on Thursday to sign a deal brokered by President Trump, who lauded the first phase of peace coming to the Middle East and the team that made it happen.

“The world has come together around this deal,” Trump told Sean Hannity on Fox News on Wednesday night. There and on Truth Social, he praised the members of his administration and their work in bringing the ceasefire and hostage release to reality.

Trump has hinted he may travel to the Middle East this weekend to close the deal. He said 20 hostages would likely be freed Monday.

The president on Thursday will convene a Cabinet meeting at 11 a.m. and will welcome Finnish President Alexander Stubbe to the White House in the afternoon.

In Washington, the Senate will try for the seventh time to reopen the government with two votes on funding bills. With no resolution in sight, Democrats are feeling like they have the upper hand, at least for now.

House Speaker Mike Johnson is taking viewer calls on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” this morning, a rare event.

Lawsuits from the states of Illinois and Oregon against the Trump administration over National Guard deployments will be in two federal courts on Thursday.

And tonight in Virginia, gubernatorial candidates Abigail Spanberger (D) and Winsome Earl-Sears (R) will debate in the shadow of a texting scandal engulfing the Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones. The event is hosted by WAVY 10, an affiliate of Nexstar, the Hill’s parent company.
