The Republican-dominated Indiana State Senate voted to reject a proposed Congressional map redraw that would have netted Republicans two additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives come next year’s midterm elections.
Republicans would have required 26 votes to pass the measure in the 50-member chamber, which includes 10 Democrats, 39 Republicans and one independent. After a contentious, weeks-long debate, the measure ultimately came up short in a floor vote on Thursday.
The vote was not particularly close, as just 19 Republicans voted for the Trump-backed map in a state the president carried by 19 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.

The proposed map (House Bill 1032) was designed to create a Republican-friendly outcome, effectively eliminating the two districts currently controlled by Democrats. It would split Indianapolis into four districts extending into rural Republican areas and divide a Democrat-leaning district near Lake Michigan.
Under the proposed map, Republicans would have gained a projected 9-0 advantage in Indiana’s congressional delegation, up from the current 7-2 split.
The Indiana House of Representatives passed the redistricting bill by a vote of 57-41 last week, which sent it to the Senate. A total of 12 Republicans joined all Democrats in opposition, despite the chamber’s Republican supermajority.
President Donald Trump has urged Republican-controlled states to redistrict in order to counter Democrat gerrymanders in states like Massachusetts, California and elsewhere, as well as to correct census “errors” that rewarded Democrats 14 unearned seats in blue strongholds.
“The weak and ineffective Republicans in the Indiana State Senate are putting their own interests ahead of the Country’s. They are refusing to Redistrict, which would give us at least 2 more Congressional Seats in a State that I won by almost 19 Points! The Democrats are laughing at these Republicans who are afraid of their own shadows,” the president posted on Truth Social last month after Republicans initially refused to back the measure.
“If they don’t Redistrict, they will be PRIMARIED, and I will personally endorse challengers who will get the job done. Indiana Republicans – DO YOUR JOB!”

While Republicans have opted to reject the map, Democrats in Virginia have vowed to advance a 10-1 map that would draw out all but one Republican-controlled seat in a state former Vice President Kamala Harris carried by single digits.
Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas posted a meme in support of the effort with the caption, “F*ck you, I’m gonna win that race.”
