An irate Democratic congresswoman running for higher office bristled when asked what her plan is to win over Trump supporters, creating a toe-curling moment that’s sure to haunt her campaign.
California Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), who is running to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, couldn’t hide her disdain for a question posed by CBS News investigative journalist Julie Watts about how she plans to win support from the approximately 40% of the electorate who voted for President Donald Trump last year.
“How would I need them in order to win, m’am?” Porter asks with obvious disdain in her eyes.
The awkward encounter only got more contentious from there as Porter shifted in her seat and Watts continued to follow up on her unanswered question.
“Unless you think you’re going to get 60% of the vote. You think you’ll get– all of, everybody who did not vote for Trump will vote for you,” Watts stated dubiously.
“In a general election, yes,” Porter replied without hesitation.
“What if it’s you versus another Democrat?” the journalist responds, referring to California’s “top-two” primary system, which could result in no Republican making it to the next November’s election.
“I don’t intend that to be the case,” the lawmaker said, stumping Watts. “Are you going to ask them not to run?”
Porter then touted her representation of Orange County, a Republican bastion, before the reporter cut in again.
“But you just said you don’t need them to win.”
Porter held up both hands in a sign of impatience. “I feel like this is unnecessarily argumentative.”
“Every other candidate has answered this question. This is not argumentative,” Watts countered.
She made a few more concerted attempts to pin down Porter on her appeal to Trump voters before the Democrat began to pull her lavalier microphone off and end the interview.
“I don’t wanna keep doing this. I’m gonna call it,” she said with a glare at the cameraman.
“Every single candidate has–”
“I don’t care. I don’t care,” snapped a petulant Porter. “I’ve never had to do this before, ever!”
“I don’t want this all on camera,” she later added.

As the NY Post notes, asking trap questions has been a hallmark of Porter’s time in Congress. She frequently used congressional testimony to shame witnesses in search of viral moments.
Former staffers to the Democrat have also alleged that she has a seriously dark side when the cameras are off. They have told stories of bullying and belittling, accusations backed up by her ex-husband in divorce proceedings.
Matthew Hoffman, who separated from Porter in 2013, alleged in court papers that she verbally abused him during their marriage and even threw “toys, books, and other objects” at him. One argument allegedly ended with Porter pouring scalding-hot mashed potatoes on his head.
