Four people were killed and at least 20 others were injured in a mass shooting at a South Carolina bar early Sunday, according to police.
Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the rest were transported to nearby hospitals.
At least four victims were in critical condition following the shooting at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island before 1 a.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said.
“Upon arriving at the scene deputies made contact with a large crowd of people, several of which were suffering from gunshot wounds. It was learned that hundreds of people were at the location when the shooting occurred. Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gun shots,” the statement read.
“Several victims were transported by Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to the hospital,” the statement continued. “More victims continued to show up at area hospitals seeking medical attention from injuries sustained at the scene.”
The county sheriff’s office said the investigation into the circumstances of the incident and possible suspects is ongoing. Authorities declined to release the names of the victims at this time.
Sunday’s shooting in South Carolina comes two days after two separate shootings in Mississippi killed at least eight people, including a pregnant woman. The shootings were related to Friday’s high school homecoming football games in the state.
There was a similar third shooting in another part of the state that came under investigation, but it appeared there were no injuries from that incident.
ARREST MADE A WEEK AFTER ALABAMA MASS SHOOTING KILLED TWO AND WOUNDED 12
In Alabama, there was a shooting that left two people dead last weekend. Gunfire erupted between different parties after a college football game in downtown Montgomery.
On Friday, local police announced a suspect had been arrested and charged with capital murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. The suspect was an unnamed juvenile male. Montgomery’s mayor said authorities are searching for additional suspects in that case.
