A Tennessee police officer assigned to Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade is clinging to life after his motorcycle slammed into a state trooper’s SUV during a Friday night escort run outside Knoxville.
Officer Justin Brown was left in critical condition after the violent collision in Maryville at 6:11 p.m., authorities said. Brown had been “providing a dignitary protection detail escort for Vice President JD Vance” when he struck a Tennessee Highway Patrol unit, according to police.
A group of stunned bystanders jumped into action, performing life-saving aid on the wounded officer before first responders arrived.
“To those individuals whose quick response saved FTO Brown’s life last night, we could never thank you enough. You are true heroes,” Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said.
Brown was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Hospital with severe injuries and underwent surgery on Saturday. He remains hospitalized as the Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. Officials have not released additional details.
Crisp said the department has been flooded with support from across the state.
“We are grateful for each and every one and appreciate the prayers and support from all over the state,” he said. “Our hearts and prayers also go out to the trooper involved in the crash.”
The chief later said Brown is showing “small improvements,” though recovery will be slow.
“We know the prayers of the community continue to cover him,” Crisp said. “His progress is expected to be gradual and he will remain hospitalized for an extended period of time, but we are grateful for the improvement we have seen since Friday.”
The Highway Patrol told the Daily Mail the trooper involved was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization. “The crash remains under investigation,” a spokesman said.
Brown is well-known in the local CrossFit community, where he’s frequently highlighted for winning fitness competitions. The CrossFit Pistol Creek gym posted a message of support after the crash, which happened on East Lamar Alexander Parkway at Merrit Road.

“The entire CrossFit Pistol Creek family is here with love and support for our fellow member, Justin Brown,” the group wrote. “We ask that you join alongside us and keep this family close to your heart.”
The Daily Mail said it also reached out to Vance’s office for comment. The vice president had been in east Tennessee for a fundraising event at Blackberry Farm in Walland. He landed at McGhee Tyson Airport around 5:30 p.m. and was en route by motorcade when the accident occurred.
