President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were left off the guest list for former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral, Fox News confirmed, marking a break from tradition.
Cheney’s funeral is set for Thursday morning at the National Cathedral in Washington. His exclusion of the president is no mystery. The Cheney family’s relationship with Trump collapsed years ago, and Axios was first to report that the White House had not been invited.
Liz Cheney, the former Wyoming congresswoman and Cheney’s eldest daughter, became one of Trump’s loudest GOP critics after helping lead the House probe into the Jan. 6 riot. Both she and her father backed former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, cementing the split.
Cheney, who rose from Casper, Wyoming, to become one of the most influential Republican power brokers of the last half-century, died earlier this month at 84.
WASHINGTON, DC – DECEMBER 3: Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney speaks at the National Press Club, December 3, 2013 in Washington, DC
“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,” his family said in a statement obtained by Fox News. “The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.”
“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States,” the statement continued.
“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing,” the family said. “We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”
Cheney battled severe heart disease for decades, surviving five heart attacks before receiving a transplant in 2012 following nearly two years on a waiting list.
He served two terms as vice president under President George W. Bush and was a dominant force in shaping the post-9/11 “war on terror,” including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
