California’s $20 minimum wage leads 89% of fast-food restaurants to reduce hours

The minimum wage for fast-food workers in California jumped to $20 an hour on April 1, a $4 pay bump for 553,000 fast workers.

However, restaurant chain owners raised concerns that the minimum wage increases would hurt their bottom line, and owners have cut workers’ hours, raised food prices, and even shut down some locations.

In June, Rubio’s Coastal Grill announced it was closing 48 restaurants and filed for bankruptcy, citing the minimum wage increase as one of the reasons for its financial troubles.

Now, more than a month after the Mexican restaurants’ announcement, the Employment Policies Institute published a report revealing that 67% of fast-food restaurants said the minimum wage increase will cost $100,000 per location every year. One in four owners said it would cost more than $200,000 per year.

The survey was filled out by 200 business owners across the Golden State.

Since April, 89% of restaurant owners said they’ve reduced hours, 73% have limited employee pickup or overtime opportunities, and 70% said they have reduced or consolidated staff positions.

“Even before the $20 wage went into effect, fast-food restaurants made it clear they would not be able to survive,” Rebekah Paxton, EPI research director, said. “Now after just a few months, the policy has been a disaster, killing jobs and shuttering restaurants. Gov. Newsom and state lawmakers should be listening to small business owners and their employees instead of trying to sugarcoat the truth.”

While restaurant owners have had difficult decisions to make, fast-food jobs in Southern California have hit a record high.

From high-top shoes to Bibles and even cryptocurrency, the 2024 election cycle has produced the most obscure and odd Trump memorabilia. Most recently to top the list are two bobbleheads, one of which shows former President Donald Trump moments after a bullet grazed his ear as a result of a July 13 assassination attempt on his life.

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled two limited-edition Trump bobbleheads Wednesday.

One bobblehead displays Trump with blood splashed across his face with his fist raised in the air in the now iconic fight pose following the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, during a rally, and the other bobblehead shows Trump with a bandage over his ear at the Republican National Convention.

“We have received a flood of requests for bobbleheads to commemorate these two historic images that are sure to be among the most iconic moments in history,” said Phil Sklar, National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO. “Political bobbleheads have grown in popularity since debuting in the 1960’s, and bobbleheads commemorating historic moments like these have been among the most popular.”

The two bobbleheads are available for pre-order for $30 plus an $8 shipping fee.

Hydrothermal explosion at Yellowstone shocks visitors: ‘Grateful to be alive’

A hydrothermal explosion occurred at Yellowstone National Park’s Biscuit Bay on Tuesday, shocking visitors.

Tourists walking along the boardwalk captured the explosion on video, with people closest to the eruption running away as smoke and debris engulfed part of the boardwalk.

Vlada March posted a video of the explosion to social media. The blast appeared to originate near the Black Diamond Pool.

“Boardwalk destroyed, my mom got some of the debris but everyone is safe. Unbelievable and grateful to be alive,” March wrote.

No injuries were reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported Biscuit Bay is currently closed.

Hydrothermal explosions are not a result of volcanic activity but instead occur when superheated water rapidly flashes to steam underground. It is a common occurrence at Yellowstone, USGS reported.

“Hydrothermal explosions like that of today are not a sign of impending volcanic eruptions, and they are not caused by magma rising towards the surface,” USGC wrote.

Sunday hottest day since the start of the last ice age, scientists say thumbnail

Sunday hottest day since the start of the last ice age, scientists say

Sunday was the hottest day ever recorded on Earth  — breaking the previous record set last July.

Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European Union’s climate monitor, recorded the temperature on Sunday to be an average of 62.76 degrees Fahrenheit. The service has been recording the Earth’s temperature since 1940.

The recent development comes as the planet has experienced 13 months of record-setting temperatures.

“We are in truly uncharted territory,” Copernicus Director Carlo Buontempo said in a statement. “And as the climate keeps warming, we are bound to see records being broken in future months and years.”

Scientists say Sunday’s temperature record was statistically indistinguishable from the recorded temperature in 2023. However, scientists found that in the past year, the average global temperature exceeded the previous high of 62.24, set in August 2016, by 57 days.

“What is truly staggering is how large the difference is between the temperature of the last 13 months and the previous temperature records,” Buontempo said.

The National Centers for Environmental Information found that 550 places around the planet set records for high daily temperatures in the last seven days, according to the Washington Post.

Sunday’s temperature coincided with wildfires that broke out in the northwestern United States, and temperatures around large parts of Antarctica were about 22 degrees above normal.

The average temperature for the year so far is predicted to exceed 2.7 degrees above pre-industrial levels — which has frightened scientists.

Scientists have gone so far as to say Sunday was the hottest day on Earth since the start of the last ice age over 100,000 years ago. They based this finding on research by paleoclimate scientists who examined tree rings, ice cores, and lake sediments and found that current temperatures would not have been possible over the past 100,000 years.

Some climate scientists are pointing the blame for rising temperatures on humans. Researcher Peter Thorne found in an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report that human beings were responsible for all observed rises in temperatures since the 1850s. To mitigate the damage caused by rising temperatures, the IPCC is calling for steep cuts for fossil fuels to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Harris team flips the script and puts Trump’s age at center of campaign thumbnail

Harris team flips the script and puts Trump’s age at center of campaign

President Joe Biden forfeited his reelection bid, now making former President Donald Trump the oldest presidential nominee of a major political party, and now Democrats expect Vice President Kamala Harris to attack his age.

Prior to Biden dropping out, his campaign team worked to sooth voters’ concerns that the 81-year-old president was too old, too frail, and too weak to run the country for another four years.

Even before his disastrous debacle at the first presidential debate, which prompted calls for him to end his reelection bid, Biden released an ad in March that looked to prove that all he had accomplished shouldn’t be negated by his age.

“Look, I’m not a young guy,” Biden said. “That’s no secret. But here’s the deal, I understand how to get things done for the American people.”

But now with Kamala Harris, who is 20 years younger than Trump, as the frontrunner to replace Biden, the campaign team will likely play into voters’ concerns as Trump is just three years younger than Biden.

“She can make the issue of age and readiness to serve a four-year term a liability for Donald Trump,” Ben Wikler, Wisconsin’s Democratic Party chairman, told reporters. “This is a reset in the presidential election.”

However, while Trump is 78 years old, his campaign team has amplified the strength and rigor he showed when a bullet shot him in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The photo of Trump with blood across his face while pumping his fist in the air garnered praise from some of the most unexpected sources. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg called Trump’s actions “the most badass things [he] has ever seen in his life.”

Trump’s campaign never honed in on Biden’s age. Instead, it focused on his countless gaffs and his record, framing him to be incompetent. According to press secretary Karoline Levitt, they are going to continue to take this same approach with Harris.

“It’s not about age, it’s about competence, and Kamala Harris has proven to be just as incompetent and ineffective as Joe Biden,” Levitt told the Wall Street Journal. “President Trump is stronger than ever, as proven by his relentless work ethic and remarkable resolve following the gruesome attempt on his life.”

Mace swears at Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle during heated exchange thumbnail

Mace swears at Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle during heated exchange

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle was “full of s***” and called her response to her question “bulls***” during the House Oversight Committee hearing investigating the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Mace first asked Cheatle if she would like to spend the allotted five minutes she has for questioning her to draft a resignation letter. Cheatle said no.

When Mace brought up the fact that Cheatle’s statement was leaked to several news outlets, including Politico, Punchbowl News, and the Washington Post hours before the committee received it, Cheatle said she had no idea how that happened.

“Well, that’s bulls***,” the congresswoman said.

Mace continued her questioning by asking Cheatle whether the Secret Service director had submitted a laundry list of documentation about the agency’s protocols, planning, and communication on the day of the assassination attempt. When Cheatle responded that she would “have to get back” to Mace about whether her agency had turned in the paperwork, Mace blasted her again.

“That is a no,” the South Carolina Republican said. “You are full of s*** today. You are being completely dishonest.”

Mace was then interrupted by Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-MD).

“We have to maintain decorum in this committee,” Mfume said.

Cheatle struggled to answer Mace’s questions about the investigation that has been conducted since Trump was shot on July 13.

“You’re just dodging and talking around it in generalities,” Mace said. “And we had to subpoena you to be here, and you won’t even answer our questions.”

Both Democrats and Republicans have stood united in holding the Secret Service accountable for the security breakdown during Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, that left one person dead and two people severely injured.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said it was absolutely unacceptable for the Secret Service to take 60 days for the law enforcement agency to finalize a report on the incident.

“So the idea that a report will be finalized in 60 days, let alone prior to any actionable decisions that would be made, is simply not acceptable,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “It has been 10 days since an assassination attempt on a former president of the United States, regardless of party. There need to be answers.”

Trump stays away from Republican calls for Secret Service director’s resignation after assassination attempt thumbnail

Trump stays away from Republican calls for Secret Service director’s resignation after assassination attempt

While Republican lawmakers and Trump loyalists call for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign, former President Donald Trump has not weighed in on the discussion.

Cheatle, who was appointed by Joe Biden as head of the Secret Service in 2022, made an appearance at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. She was confronted by multiple senators on the convention floor.

“This was an assassination attempt! You owe the people answers. You owe President Trump answers,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) shouted at Cheatle as she walked past her at the convention.

Cheatle had met privately with Trump on Tuesday to brief him on the security breakdown that gave a 20-year-old gunman the opportunity to take multiple shots at the former president.

While many, such as Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), are pointing the blame at the security breakdown to diversity, equity, and inclusion mandates, Trump praised his security detail for bravery during the failed assassination attempt.

“Bullets began to fly as very brave Secret Service agents rushed to the stage, and they really did,” Trump said in his acceptance speech at the RNC on Thursday. “They rushed to the stage. These are great people at great risk, I will tell you.”

Trump described how the agents pounced on top of him, shielding him as bullets flew by.

“I felt very safe because I had God on my side,” Trump said.

Trump’s son Eric shared in an interview with MSNBC’s Katy Tur at the Republican National Convention that he had the utmost respect for his father’s Secret Service security detail, particularly for the female agent who is pictured in the now iconic photo of Trump pumping his fist in the air.

“The female that is in the picture, she’s been with me for a very long time,” Eric Trump said. “I’d do anything for her. She’s one of the greatest human beings you’ll ever meet. I’d do anything for her.”

It’s the last day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, and former President Donald Trump is set to accept his nomination for president.

On the first day of the convention, Trump announced Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who is serving his first term in office, as his vice president pick.

Lara Trump, Trump’s daughter-in-law and RNC co-chairwoman, said people may be surprised to see a different version of Trump following the failed assassination attempt on his life at a Pennsylvania rally last Saturday. In an exclusive interview with the Washington Examiner, Trump said he completely rewrote the speech he had prepared.

“The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger,” Trump said. “Had this not happened, this would’ve been one of the most incredible speeches. Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now.”

In addition, professional wrestler Hulk Hogan and political commentator Tucker Carlson will be speaking this evening. Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White will be introducing Trump.
