Schumer signals Supreme Court blitz is coming if Democrats win big in November

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said there are plans to roll out major overhauls to the Supreme Court if Democrats win control of the White House and both chambers of Congress.

Calls for implementing stricter rules for the Supreme Court from the Left have escalated in recent years, as complaints about alleged corruption and ethical lapses have plagued Republican-appointed justices.

Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have been targeted by campaigns calling into question their relationships with GOP megadonors and their wives’ political involvement.

“The Supreme Court has become a morass, both ethically and substantively,” Schumer told NBC News. “We’re going to look at everything. There are lots of proposals.”

Without the support of Republicans, Democrats’ plans to implement an enforceable ethics code mandating justices disclose all gifts and financial contributions, as well as strict rules for recusing themselves from cases, are almost impossible to implement.

Schumer said Democrats also plan to pursue President Joe Biden’s stated goal of instituting 18-year term limits for justices, as well as an end to “forum shopping,” a practice in which litigants choose to have their cases heard before friendly judges in specific divisions.

The majority leader introduced a bill on Thursday called the “No Kings Act” to roll back the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling. If successful, this would mean that a president would not be immune from prosecution for “official acts.”

Republicans see Schumer and Biden’s demands as a way to play offense, juicing Democratic excitement in an election year and undermining the Republican-appointed majority.

“They [Republicans] spent three decades trying to take over the courts,” Schumer said. “They’ve achieved it.”

Even with control of the White House and both chambers, Schumer and Democrats would have to blow up the filibuster without a supermajority of 60 votes. Though that prospect may be closer to reality, as Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) and Joe Manchin (I-WV) were two members of Schumer’s caucus who refused to change the rule and are not running for reelection.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s $11M deal with UFL and Army to boost recruitment efforts may have backfired thumbnail

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s $11M deal with UFL and Army to boost recruitment efforts may have backfired

The U.S. Army is hoping to recoup $6 million from the United Football League after a $11 million sponsorship deal failed to not only bring in any new recruits but actually lead to the loss of 38 enlistments.

League owner Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was an integral part of the Army’s deal, as he agreed to make five posts promoting the Army on his social media page. However, Johnson did not hold up his end of the bargain and only made two posts.

Documents show the Army valued each post at a million dollars, Military.com reported. With over 396 million followers on Instagram, the Army saw Johnson’s popularity and high-profile status in the entertainment industry as influential in the Army’s recruitment efforts.

There was concern about partnering with UFL, the minor league version of the National Football League, given the recently created franchise’s low viewerships. A merger between the Extreme Football League and the United States Football League, the UFL boasted higher views than seen in the other two franchises, but it still failed to garner the high viewership found in the NCAA, which generates ten times the number of viewers.

Despite the concerns, Gen. Randy George, Army chief of staff, went ahead with the partnership deal.

The deal included having Army signage throughout the stadiums, the Army logo on the players’ uniforms, and the previously mentioned social media campaign with Johnson. With the UFL season running from March to June, Johnson hadn’t posted anything to his Instagram related to the Army since April. The two social media posts he posted consisted of clips of his tour of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland and photos of him surrounded by generals.

“In terms of The Rock, it’s unfortunate he was pulled away at a time when we expected him to be present with us to create content for his social media channels,” Col. Dave Butler, a spokesman for George, told Military.com in a statement. “But we’re working with the UFL to rebalance the contract. The Rock remains a good partner to the Army.”

Internal documents reveal the UFL staffing was “inexperienced” and caused many communication breakdowns between the Army in terms of rendering out marketing plans.

“UFL’s lack of experience liaising between brand/networks was very apparent during planning [the] process and created a significant amount of additional work,” the document said.

The recent recruitment bust comes as the Army and other branches struggle to meet their recruitment goals, with 70% of applicants deemed disqualified for service upon initial screening, mainly due to obesity and drug use.

Trump says he can ‘make a case’ for not debating Kamala Harris thumbnail

Trump says he can ‘make a case’ for not debating Kamala Harris

During a sit-down interview with Fox News’s Laura Ingraham, former President Donald Trump said he is leaning toward debating Vice President Kamala Harris but “can also make a case for not doing it.”

When President Joe Biden stepped out of the presidential race, and Harris immediately received the support of the majority of the delegates, Trump began to question having the next debate scheduled for Sept. 10 being hosted by “fake news” ABC News.

Trump said he wouldn’t commit to a debate with Harris until she becomes the Democratic nominee, but the Harris campaign claimed he is “scared.”

“I want to do a debate,” Trump said. “But I also can say this. Everybody knows who I am. And now people know who she is.”

Trump said it is important for the debate to be held before early voting begins.

“The answer is yes, but I can also make a case for not doing it,” he said.

Trump described Harris as “far more radical left” than Biden.

“She’s a worse candidate than him,” Trump said.

Ingraham also brought up comments that Trump made at a Christian summit in which he urged attendees to vote and promised they “wouldn’t have to vote anymore” after this election because he would “fix the country.”

Trump didn’t back down from making those comments.

“That statement is very simple,” Trump said. “I said vote for me, you’re not going to have to do it ever again. It’s true because we have to get the vote out. Christians are not known as a big voting group.”

He said he would “straighten out the country” for Christians so that they wouldn’t have to worry about voting again.

“I won’t need your vote. You can go back to not voting,” Trump added.

Ingraham asked if Trump meant they wouldn’t have to vote for him again because he would not be eligible to run again in 2028. She then brought up that Democrats were twisting his words to mean he would bring an end to democracy.

Trump said he had not heard that criticism but insisted he wanted to encourage Christian voters to come out and vote for him.

“Christians do not vote well. They vote in very small percentages. Why? I don’t know. Maybe they’re disappointed in things that are happening,” Trump said. “I say, ‘You don’t vote. I’m saying go out, you must vote.’ But I said to the Christians in the room, thousands of them. I said, typically, Christians do not vote.”

However, former Biden White House communications director Kate Bedingfield said she thinks Trump only cares about Christians voting now since this will be the time he will appear on the ballot.

“I think he is saying I won’t be on the ticket either way, so who cares,” she posted on X. “Which is hideously damning in its own right, cause this is what the Republican Party has turned itself inside out and shredded its credibility for — to become a stan account for this one awful, narcissistic guy.”

Roy Cooper takes himself out of running for Harris’s vice president thumbnail

Roy Cooper takes himself out of running for Harris’s vice president

Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC), a top contender for Vice President Kamala Harris’s vice presidential pick, withdrew himself from consideration on Monday.

It’s not immediately clear why Cooper has dropped out of being considered, who just days before was reported by some Democrats to be Harris’s top pick. His decision was reported by the New York Times. Politico has reported some influencing factors could be a potential run for Senate, his age and how his being out of the state to campaign might elevate Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who is running for governor.

Cooper confirmed the move in a post on X.

Harris expects to have her choice for vice president solidified by Aug. 7. She unofficially replaced Biden as the Democratic nominee on Sunday July 21.

The campaign team has vetted a total of 12 potential running mates but said it narrowed it down to five now that Cooper is out.

Cooper is in his second and last term as North Carolina’s governor, a battleground state that former President Donald Trump won in 2020.

Harris and Cooper have a long relationship, dating back to both of their times serving as state attorney generals.

Like Cooper, the remaining, serious vice president contenders are all white men. They are Govs. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), Tim Walz (D-MN), and Andy Beshear (R-KY), Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

With the exception of Buttigieg, all of Harris’s choices have a record for winning highly competitive elections.

Harris has yet to meet with any of her potential running meets, and initial candidate interviews are reportedly being conducted over phone calls.

Already, several of Harris’s vice president hopefuls have begun campaigning. Last Saturday, Shapiro campaigned for Harris in Philadelphia.

“I want a future that is cleaner and greener,” Shapiro said. “I want a future with better schools and safer streets, and I want a future full of freedom. I want to look the 47th president of the United States in the eye and say, ‘Madam President.’”

‘White Dudes for Harris’ Zoom fundraiser aims to shore up support among Democrats’ weakest demographic

The latest Zoom fundraiser organized for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential election campaign aims to boost support from a demographic that has historically favored Republicans: “White Dudes.”

The Zoom call, scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern on Monday, had more than 90,000 people registered. Greene’s goal was to see 10,000 signups. Famous white men will join, including Mark Ruffalo, Mark Hamill and Sean Astin. Potential vice presidential picks Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Govs. Tim Walz (D-MN) and J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) are also expected to join.

“For too long, Man Box culture has positioned white men at the top of a bullying and rigid dominance -based culture of masculinity which teaches us that the only power that matters is power we create over others,” founder Mark Greene wrote. “The result has been an economic, political and environmental disaster.”

“White Dudes for Harris” is hoping to play a “positive role” in Harris’s election efforts.

Historically, there’s been a gap between white men and white women when it comes to political affiliation. As of 2017, 48% of white women identified with the Democratic Party, compared to 37% of white men who considered themselves to be Democrats.

A recent poll found that 39% of men said they would vote for Harris while 47% said they would vote for Trump.

White male voters have been a consistently strong voting bloc for former President Donald Trump. However, compared to 2016, there was a drop in the demographic’s voter turnout in 2020 in key swing states such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Ultimately, these states were won by Biden, thus granting him the presidency.

Polling conducted in Wisconsin from late 2023 to early 2024, reveals Trump’s net favorability rating among white men dropped 22 points, from plus eight points to minus 14 points.

Part of the appeal to choosing Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) was to reignite white male voters.

“You need a white guy to get the white guys we lost. The Hillbilly Elegy guy is the one to do it,” MAGA political operative Vish Burra told the Bulwark. “Trump needs Vance because he’s good on camera and he sounds right. He’s not one of these people you can dismiss as a MAGAloid or a barbarian.”

White Dudes for Harris have stated their biggest grievances with Trump, Vance, and MAGA Republicans are “criminalizing abortion, failing to protect IVF, threatening birth control, threatening no fault divorce.”

However, the 2024 Republican Party platform states it would protect in vitro fertilization treatment, and Trump has said he is opposed to a national abortion ban.

Republicans blast newly floated Harris vice presidential contender

Though Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) has excused herself as a contender for the Democratic vice presidential pick, Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) is reportedly being considered as a possible running mate by the Harris campaign in an effort to appeal to labor unions.

Michigan is a swing state with 15 electoral votes up for grabs, and the Harris campaign is looking at the best way to win it over. Approximately 564,0000 workers in Michigan belong to a labor union, accounting for 12.4% of workers. While the number of workers in organized labor in Michigan has been on the decline since the 1980s, labor unions have long been strong supporters of Democrats. Already, Harris has received the endorsement of the AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest federation of labor unions, the United Steelworkers, and the American Federation of Teachers.

Peters was a prominent supporter of the United Automobile Workers strike against the big three auto workers last fall. Currently, the UAW has withheld its endorsement to Harris, but Peters being picked as the running mate could encourage the auto labor union, according to Axios.

“I know for sure that one of the reasons his name is in the mix is that labor really wants to have somebody who is undoubtedly pro union, and Gary fits that definition quite well,” Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI) told the outlet. The outlet also reported the senator is interested in the nomination, according to a Michigan Democratic party official.

As the chairman of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, Peters has been applauded by Democrats for helping the party retain its Senate majority back in 2022, but now the National Republican Senatorial Committee sees Peters moving for the White House as his jumping ship.

“Gary Peters knows Democrats are about to lose the Senate majority, so now he’s trying to quit on his members and become Kamala Harris’s vice president,” NRSC Spokesman Philip Letsou told the Washington Examiner. “Kamala Harris is the most far-left presidential nominee in American history and is already absolutely toxic for down-ballot Democrats.”

However, in the first week of Harris’s campaign, the vice president raised $200 million, with two-thirds of donations coming from new donors.

The DSCC raised a million dollars two days in a row last week, and Peters said the number of volunteers in Michigan doubled in the four days since Harris announced her run for president.

FBI confirms Trump hit by bullet ‘whole or fragmented’ after GOP urges correction thumbnail

FBI confirms Trump hit by bullet ‘whole or fragmented’ after GOP urges correction

The FBI released a statement seemingly course-correcting after Republicans and former President Donald Trump himself disagreed with part of FBI Director Christopher Wray’s testimony before Congress on Wednesday.

“What struck former President Trump in the ear was a bullet, whether whole or fragmented into smaller pieces, fired from the deceased subject’s rifle,” the statement read.

Wray testified about the investigation into the assassination attempt on Trump but created some confusion about what it was that struck the former president.

“I think with respect to former President Trump, there’s some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel that hit his ear,” Wray said.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called on Wray earlier in the day to correct his statement that Trump may have actually been hit by shrapnel, not a bullet, at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“I believe it is very important for you to correct your testimony before Congress on Wednesday when you indicated it is uncertain whether President Donald J. Trump was hit by a bullet, glass, or shrapnel,” Graham wrote. “It is clear to everyone that President Trump survived an assassination attempt by millimeters, as the attempted assassin’s bullet ripped the upper part of his ear.”

“This was made clear in briefings my office received and should not be a point of contention. Therefore, I urge you to immediately correct your statement and acknowledge that President Trump was hit by a bullet rather than glass or shrapnel,” Graham continued. “As head of the FBI, you should not be creating confusion about such matters, as it further undercuts the agency’s credibility with millions of Americans. Please correct this statement immediately.”

Trump also voiced his disagreement with the director’s assessment, posting on Truth Social to confirm he had suffered a gunshot wound.

“No, it was, unfortunately, a bullet that hit my ear, and hit it hard,” Trump wrote. “There was no glass, there was no shrapnel. The hospital called it a ‘bullet wound to the ear,’ and that is what it was.”

The hospital that treated Trump had not released any medical reports, leaving the internet to speculate about what caused the injury.

However, a report by Trump’s former White House physician, Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), who said he treated Trump’s wounds, and an analysis by the New York Times both support that Trump was hit by a bullet.

How Harris woke up Democrats — and Trump’s team

Following an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential nominee embraced unity and completely switched up his prepared remarks for the Republican National Convention, but now with Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee, the former president is done being nice.

At Trump’s rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, his first since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, Trump unloaded on Harris, calling her a “lunatic” and “the most liberal elected politician in American history.”

“I was supposed to be nice,” the former president said. “They said something happened when I got shot. I became nice. If you don’t mind, I’m not going to be nice. Is that OK?”

Before Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris, the Trump team was feeling like it had the election in the bag.

Even before Biden’s disastrous presidential debate and the assassination attempt, Republicans were working toward turning Virginia blue for the first time in 10 election cycles and also had hopes for Minnesota.

“We’re measuring the drapes,” someone close to Trump told the Bulwark on the sidelines of the RNC last week. “It’s just too good right now. We’re jinxing ourselves.”

While they are not necessarily putting away their tape measures, Trump’s team has been shaken out of its reverie in recent days.

None of Trump’s campaign operatives expected to see Harris receive the level of support she did once Biden dropped out of the race. Aides to the president even said one of the reasons he was so hesitant to drop out was he had doubts about Harris’s ability to beat Trump, according to Axios.

One member of Trump’s inner circle also told the Bulwark they did not expect such a smooth transition of power from Biden to Harris. Instead, they expected there to be a major battle among top Democrats for the nomination.

But that did not happen. Instead, a majority of delegates pledged their support for Harris. So far, her campaign and related groups have raised more than $150 million. On top of that, Harris has become a popular meme among young people, garnering the endorsement of pop stars Olivia Rodrigo and Charli XCX.

“The situation we find ourselves in today is totally uncharted territory and has no modern historical parallel,” Trump pollster and senior adviser Tony Fabrizio wrote in a Wednesday memo.

On Thursday, Trump announced he would not commit to sharing a debate stage with Harris, who has accused the former president of being intimidated by her.

But now Trump’s campaign is refocusing efforts on launching more TV advertisements with a particular focus on attacking Harris. Since the primary ended, his campaign has spent only $63,715.13 on TV ads, but now MAGA Inc. Super PAC is set to spend $32 million on ads exclusively attacking Harris.
