JUST IN: Rooftop Where Shooter Fired At Trump Was Identified As Security Threat BEFORE Rally

The New Atlantis

Today, the Republican National Committee launches its convention in Milwaukee, where they are set to formally nominate former President Donald Trump as the Republican presidential candidate. This comes just two days after Trump, the presidential frontrunner, survived an assassination attempt.

The shooting occurred when a 20-year-old man from a small town in Pennsylvania fired multiple shots at Trump. Authorities are currently investigating the motivations behind the gunman’s actions, as well as how he managed to access a rooftop near the event venue.

The Secret Service, which had previously identified the rooftop as a potential security threat, is now facing backlash. Sources familiar with the agency’s operations disclosed to NBC News that the building, owned by a glass research company, was known to be a security risk.

It sits adjacent to the Butler Farm Show, the outdoor venue where Trump was speaking. In response to the incident, lawmakers are calling for a thorough review of security measures. The Secret Service chief confirmed that the agency would cooperate with an independent security review to prevent such breaches in the future.

A former senior Secret Service agent familiar with the security protocols stated, “Someone should have been on the roof or securing the building so no one could get on the roof.”

Investigators are focused on unraveling how the assailant managed to position himself on a rooftop to take aim at Trump. The Secret Service had teamed up with local police to secure the event, placing sharpshooters on surrounding rooftops to quickly address any threats, as explained by Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

“There’s an untrue assertion that a member of the former President’s team requested additional security resources & that those were rebuffed,” Guglielmi wrote Sunday. “This is absolutely false. In fact, we added protective resources & technology & capabilities as part of the increased campaign travel tempo.”

Despite these measures, there were no law enforcement officers on the particular rooftop from which the gunman operated, located outside the main security ring but a mere 148 yards from where Trump was speaking. This distance was well within the firing capabilities of the gunman’s semiautomatic weapon. The oversight of this specific rooftop had been handed over to local authorities, a routine strategy for outdoor rally security.

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger revealed that his office has an Emergency Services Unit team, which consisted of four sniper teams and four “quick response teams” present at the rally. However, Goldinger emphasized that the Secret Service took the lead on security measures outside the venue.

“They had meetings in the week prior. The Secret Service ran the show. They were the ones who designated who did what,” Goldinger explained. “In the command hierarchy, they were top, they were No. 1. To me, the whole thing is under the jurisdiction of the Secret Service. And they will delineate from there.”

The former senior Secret Service agent emphasized to NBC News that the agency bears ultimate responsibility, even if there are lapses by local law enforcement. Even if local law enforcement “did drop the ball,” it’s still the agency’s responsibility ‘to ensure that they are following through either beforehand or in the moment,’” he stated.

“Just because it is outside of the perimeter, it doesn’t take it out of play for a vulnerability, and you’ve got to mitigate it in some fashion.”

Joy Behar of “The View” managed to further embarrass herself and the show with her ill-informed comments about the recent tragic shooting at a campaign rally for former President Donald Trump. On Saturday during a speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump was shot and wounded, with a tragic loss of life and several injuries among the crowd.

Behar’s remarks came on Monday’s show when she attempted to address the issue of gun violence linked to the incident. Her commentary quickly spiraled into controversy.

“The shooter, yes, it was a 20-year-old kitchen worker from nearby Bethel Park in Pennsylvania,” Behar started “According to a CNN reporter, senior law enforcement officials said that he bought 50 rounds of ammunition from a local gun store hours before the rally. Shouldn’t that have been reported?

“Somebody buys 20-year-old white guy? I mean we’ve seen that many times now, young white men with guns and nobody reported that he bought 15 rounds of ammunition?” Behar claimed.

WATCH:

This isn’t the first time Behar, or her co-hosts, have made controversial jabs aimed at others. The liberal leaning show has long supplied outlandish, foolish takes.

Saturday’s shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, left virtually no trace of his motives before he shockingly attempted to assassinate Trump at the rally. Details surrounding Crooks’s life and intentions still remain largely unknown. According to federal authorities, Crooks had no documented mental health problems, had never made any prior threats, and was not previously on the radar of any federal law enforcement agencies.

Tragedy struck at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday when a gunman opened fire, resulting in the death of one attendee and injuries to two others. Former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped serious injury when one of the bullets grazed his ear. The injured, David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, are currently receiving medical treatment.

However, the victim identified as Corey Comperatore, a retired firefighter and father of two, was fatally struck while heroically shielding his family from the gunfire. On Monday, Comperatore’s widow revealed his final act of bravery, recounting his last words as he protected them from the bullets that ended his life.

“Get down!” were the last words Corey Comperatore, 50, the volunteer firefighter and father of two said as he protected his family from the gunman.

“He’s my hero,” Helen Comperatore said to The New York Post from their home in Sarver, Pennsylvania. “He just said, ‘get down!’ That was the last thing he said.”

Helen revealed that President Joe Biden attempted to reach out to her family following the tragic shooting, but she declined the call. “I didn’t talk to Biden. I didn’t want to talk to him,” she said. “My husband was a devout Republican and he would not have wanted me to talk to him.”

Helen shared that she and her husband, childhood sweethearts, were about to celebrate their 29th wedding anniversary when they attended the rally as a family to support their candidate. “Me and the kids were all there as a family,” she recounted. “He was just excited. It was going to be a nice day with the family.” Sadly, the day turned tragic. “It was a bad day. He was a very loving husband.”

“He was a simple man but he put his wife and kids first all the time. I did nothing here. I didn’t lift a finger. He did everything.” A GoFundMe page set up by her family has raised $990,000. “The donations that are coming in across the community and across the country, it’s more than I can even imagine,” she said. “It’s more than I can fathom, but he deserves it all. He deserves everything.” She also noted that the family has not heard from Trump, and reiterated that Biden is not welcome.

“I don’t have any ill-will towards Joe Biden. I’m not one of those people that gets involved in politics. I support Trump, that’s who I’m voting for but I don’t have ill-will towards Biden.” She finished, “He didn’t do anything to my husband. A 20-year-old despicable kid did.”

Thomas Matthew Crooks, the shooter, was a member of a local gun club and employed as a dietary aide at a nursing facility. He was registered as a Republican and had previously made a $15 donation to a progressive political organization. Crooks was not carrying any ID, prompting investigators to use DNA and facial recognition technology for identification, according to the FBI. Authorities have yet to determine a motive. NBC News reported that more than a dozen guns were discovered during a search of the Crooks family home.

Report: Law Enforcement Spotted Suspect 30 Minutes Before Trump Assassination Attempt

Report: Law Enforcement Spotted Suspect 30 Minutes Before Trump Assassination Attempt

The New Atlantis

On Saturday, an assassination attempt was made on former President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The attack occurred when a gunman, later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, opened fire. Trump, who reported being shot in the ear, was quickly whisked away from the scene with visible blood on his face.

The chaotic episode resulted in the deaths of the assailant and an audience member. Additionally, two other rally attendees sustained injuries but are now reported to be in stable condition, according to officials.

The FBI said that Crooks acted independently and is currently delving deeper into his background, including efforts to unlock his phone as part of the ongoing investigation. The motive behind the brazen attack remains a mystery for law enforcement as they continue to piece together the event.

On Monday Channel 11 News revealed startling new details surrounding the events that led up to the recent assassination attempt. Law enforcement officials reportedly observed Crooks on the rooftop approximately 30 minutes before he opened fire.

Nicole Ford reported that the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit, which included snipers and spotters, was present at the rally. At 5:45 p.m., one of the spotters identified a suspicious individual on a nearby roof, immediately reported the sighting, and captured a photo. The individual has now been confirmed as Thomas Crooks. It remains uncertain whether Crooks was armed at the time of the sighting.

“According to multiple sources, a law enforcement officer had also previously seen Crooks on the ground and called him in as a suspicious person with a picture prior to 5:45 p.m. Our sources tell us an officer checked the grounds for Crooks at that point, but did not see him where the first picture was taken,” the outlet reported. “26 minutes after the second picture of Crooks was taken by law enforcement and the information called in, shots were fired from the roof of the American Glass Research building. Seconds later, a Secret Service sniper returned fire and killed Crooks.”

Crooks also bought 50 rounds of ammunition just mere hours before the rally. The purchase was made at Allegheny Arms and Gun Works located in Bethel Park, as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

A spokesperson for Allegheny Arms told the outlet: “As a responsible member of our community it is our prerogative to cooperate with law enforcement in every way. We are thankful that President Trump was not assassinated and our hearts and prayers go out to all victims of this horrible incident. Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and that of those affected we will not make any further statements.”

As of Monday, almost 48 hours after the assassination attempt, the FBI has not yet determined a motive for Crooks’ actions. Law enforcement is actively trying to access Crooks’ cellphone to further understand his background and potential motivations as he remains an enigma. Despite being two years out of high school and having targeted a major political figure, no discernible online footprint or social media presence has shed light on his motives.

Donald Trump Jr. forcefully rebuffed MSNBC reporter Jacob Soboroff at the Republican National Convention, directing him to leave the event following questions about his father’s policies and leadership. This comes just days after the assassination attempt on Trump Sr., who has now secured enough votes to become the GOP’s presidential nominee once more.

“Your father as president, I think you would even say was a divisive figure. What’s it going to look like in the second term?” Soboroff asked, putting the microphone in his face. “I don’t think he was a divisive figure at all,” Trump Jr. chirped back.

“I think the media created divisiveness around him. They lied about Russia collusion. They said he was a traitor. They went after him in every which way is possible.” As Soboroff pressed on about the potential continuation of policies like family separation, Trump Jr. dismissed the framing of the questions as biased and accused MSNBC of perpetuating falsehoods.

“It’s MSDNC, so I expect nothing less from you clowns. Even today, even 48 hours later, you couldn’t wait. You couldn’t wait with your lies and with your nonsense. So just get out of here,” he yelled, signaling the end of the interview.

WATCH:

Trump Jr. is scheduled to speak on Wednesday at the RNC.

Former President Trump announced on Truth Social over the weekend that he had thought about postponing his trip to the RNC, but said he “decided that I cannot allow a ‘shooter,’ or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else.”

The GOP once again chose Trump as their presidential candidate following the roll call vote Monday afternoon. This marked the third time Trump has received the nomination since 2016. He is slated to formally accept this nomination during his speech on Thursday evening.

The 2024 favorite also officially selected Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his 2024 running mate. Vance, a celebrated author and former Marine, will play a key role in Trump’s bid to reconnect with the heartland and working-class voters across America.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” Trump continued.

“As Vice President, J.D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our Troops, and will do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Congratulations to Senator J.D. Vance, his wife, Usha, who also graduated from Yale Law School, and their three beautiful children. MAGA2024!”

Next month, the Democrats are set to host their own convention in Chicago.

NEW: Investigators STILL ‘Can’t Determine’ Trump Shooter’s Motive Nearly 48 Hours Later

On Saturday, former President Donald Trump was swiftly escorted off stage with blood visible on his face after being shot in the ear. The incident led to immediate chaos, resulting in the deaths of the gunman and one audience member. Additionally, two other attendees were injured but have since been stabilized, according to statements from law enforcement officials.

The FBI has identified the perpetrator as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Authorities have confirmed that Crooks acted independently. As of Monday, almost 48 hours after the assassination attempt, the FBI has not yet determined a motive for Crooks’ actions.

The investigation is in its early stages, and law enforcement is actively trying to access Crooks’ cellphone to further understand his background and potential motivations. The Secret Service, however, is now under intense scrutiny over its security protocols during the rally. There are growing calls from various quarters for a comprehensive congressional investigation into the significant security failures that allowed the shooting to occur.

The FBI described Saturday “as an assassination attempt and potential domestic terrorism.”

“While the investigation to date indicates the shooter acted alone, the FBI continues to conduct logical investigative activity to determine if there were any co-conspirators associated with this attack. At this time, there are no current public safety concerns,” the department wrote in a statement on Sunday.

“The FBI has not identified a motive for the shooter’s actions, but we are working to determine the sequence of events and the shooter’s movements prior to the shooting, collecting and reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, and following up on all leads. We have also obtained the shooter’s telephone for examination.”

“The FBI has searched the shooter’s home and vehicle to collect additional evidence. Suspicious devices found at both locations have been rendered safe by bomb technicians and are being evaluated at the FBI Laboratory. The firearm used in the shooting was purchased legally. The shooter was not known to the FBI prior to this incident.”

Today, the FBI said their technical specialists have accessed the phone of Crooks and are analyzing his electronic devices for clues. Additionally, searches of Crooks’ residence and vehicle have been completed. The agency has also received hundreds of digital media tips, including photos and videos from the scene, and continues to sift through new information as it comes in.

Over the weekend an FBI official also revealed that Crooks’ phone had been sent to the agency’s forensic lab in Quantico, Virginia, in an attempt to unlock its contents. The semiautomatic rifle used in the attack was legally purchased. Initially, the FBI suggested the weapon might have been bought by Crooks’ father, although it remains unclear how the 20-year-old came into possession of the firearm.

As for Crooks, the man remains an enigma. Despite being two years out of high school and having targeted a major political figure, no discernible online footprint or social media presence has shed light on his motives. The lack of digital clues complicates efforts to understand why he would assault the potential next president.

Jason Kohler, 21, a former classmate of Crooks in high school, shared his insights with CNN. According to Kohler, Crooks was frequently bullied by his peers and was known to keep to himself. “Crooks had ‘no facial expression’ when he walked through the school hallways,” Kohler recounted. “He wasn’t, like, with the clique, so he always had, I guess, a target on his back.”

BREAKING: Trump Officially Announces VP Pick

The New Atlantis

Former President Donald Trump has selected his vice presidential candidate.

The announcement, delivered via Trump’s Truth Social account, revealed Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his 2024 running mate. Vance, a celebrated author and former Marine, will now play a key role in Trump’s bid to reconnect with the heartland and working-class voters across America.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote.

Highlighting Vance’s robust credentials, Trump praised his vice presidential pick for his service in the Marine Corps, academic excellence at The Ohio State University and Yale Law School, and successful career in technology and finance. Vance’s bestselling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which was adapted into a major motion picture, resonates deeply with the American working class, capturing the struggles and aspirations of many in the Rust Belt states.

“J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” Trump continued.

MAGA2024!” Trump finished.

Trump’s choice reinforces his strategy to target key battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Minnesota—regions that could be crucial for a 2024 victory. Vance’s role in the campaign, as outlined by Trump, will focus intensively on American workers and farmers, a demographic that both candidates have vocally championed in the past.

WATCH:

In 2021, Vance entered politics, running for the U.S. Senate from Ohio as a Republican. He has positioned himself as a populist conservative, with a platform that has included strong anti-immigration stances and criticism of the political establishment. In the buildup to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday, he was spotted departing his Cincinnati, Ohio home in a motorcade, fueling speculation about his eventual nomination.

WATCH:

“I’m human, right?” Vance said in an interview with Fox News in late June about the vice presidency. “So, when you know this thing is a possibility, if it doesn’t happen… there is certainly going to be a little bit of disappointment. They’ll ask me if they ask me, and if they don’t, that’s fine.”

BREAKING: Multiple VP Contenders Told They Will NOT Be Trump’s Pick

The New Atlantis

Former President Donald Trump, more reinvigorated than ever following his brush with death on Saturday, confirmed that he will be announcing his vice presidential running mate on Monday. The former president must present his VP pick before delegates formally nominate him on Thursday.

As speculation grows, sources close to the situation have revealed that multiple contenders for the coveted selection have been informed they will not be Trump’s vice-presidential pick. On Monday, Gram Slattery of Reuters confirmed Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s exclusion from the VP race, stating, “Florida Senator Marco Rubio has been informed he will not be Trump’s VP, sources say.”

A source also informed Fox News’ Paul Steinhauser that North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has received a call notifying him that he is not Trump’s choice for running mate. Burgum’s exclusion further narrows the field.

Known for his eloquence and experience on the national stage, Rubio was considered a strong contender. However, insiders suggested that Trump was looking for a running mate who not only aligns with his vision but also brings fresh energy to the ticket. Rubio, while respected, may not have fit the bill in this regard.

There is also the growing possibility of a dark horse candidate.

The announcements come after possible Secret Service vehicles were spotted at the home of Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH), one of the few Republicans rumored to remain on the president’s VP shortlist. The arrival of increased protection for Vance was chalked up to routine security enhancements by Governor Mike DeWine following the attempted assassination of Trump on Saturday, though DeWine, could be following orders from higher-ups in the GOP to put a ring around Vance before he joins Trump in Milwaukee.

Former President Donald Trump was rushed off stage on Saturday after an apparent assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania. The incident, which occurred just minutes into his address, left the former president with injuries.

The ordeal began abruptly when gunfire erupted amidst the crowd, initially mistaken for firecrackers by attendees. Chaos ensued as the reality of the situation unfolded, with former President Trump visibly injured, having blood on the side of his head and ear. He was swiftly escorted into an SUV by his security detail, managing to acknowledge the crowd with a raised fist before being whisked away.

Jake Rosen of CBS News spoke to an attendee who is also emergency room doctor. “I heard the shots. I thought it was firecrackers to begin with,” the doctor explained. “Somebody over there was screaming, ‘he’s been shot, he’s been shot.’ So I made my way over. I said, I’m an emergency department physician.”

As the doctor navigated through the panicked crowd, he found the injured individual, severely wounded and trapped between benches. “Let me help you,” he recounted saying. “The guy had spun around and was jammed between the benches. He had a head shot here. There was lots of blood. And he had brain matter there.”

WATCH:

“Was it the only one person shot that you saw?” Rosen asked.

“Yeah,” the doctor said.

U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) was in the front row alongside Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Senate candidate Dave McCormick at the time of the incident. The congressman reported that he heard 8-10 shots and believed to see multiple people down in the front row.

Just minutes into the former president’s speech, what sounded like gunfire erupted just after 6 p.m. Eastern Time. Secret Service agents immediately dove on the former president, who appeared to be grabbing his ear. He was then helped to his feet by Secret Service agents before giving a thumbs up to the crowd. The president’s ear appeared to be bleeding, though it is unclear if he has sustained any additional injuries at this time.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said, “Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable,” adding that he had been briefed on the situation in Butler County. A spokesperson for Trump said, “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”

The individual responsible for the shooting was not a participant at the rally and was killed by U.S. Secret Service agents, according to officials.

“This horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned,” said Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA)

During a rally on Saturday night, former President Donald Trump was shot in the ear and promptly escorted off stage, visibly bleeding. The assassination attempt resulted in the deaths of the assailant and one atendee, while two others sustained injuries but are now in stable condition.

The alarming security breach has ignited urgent inquiries and demands for a congressional investigation into the Secret Service’s protocols. Meanwhile, the ongoing concerns surrounding Joe Biden’s candidacy have temporarily receded among congressional Democrats, who are now prioritizing the safety of themselves and their staff over party politics, providing a respite for the president amidst his challenges.

“We’re all just focused on expressing condolences … and keeping our teams safe,” commented a House Democrat known for his critical stance on Biden, according to Axios. Meanwhile, a senior House Democrat described the current environment within the party following the shooting as too “chaotic” to engage in any internal disputes over leadership.

A second senior House Democrat conveyed that the shooting has inadvertently eased some pressure, noting it would “be bad form to make any statements against President Biden” at this time. When another Democrat, who has been skeptical of Biden was questioned about the ongoing concerns surrounding the his candidacy, they responded with, “I don’t think that’s the focus right now.”

Most legislators who spoke with Axios believe it is premature to determine if the current easing of tensions will persist until the Democratic National Convention next month. However, a second senior House Democrat suggested a potential reason for a sustained calm, stating, “We’ve all resigned ourselves to a second Trump presidency.”

The White House has announced that Biden’s planned trip to Austin, Texas, scheduled for Monday, will be postponed.

Assassination attempts on U.S. presidents have been grim episodes in American history, reflecting not only the vulnerabilities of these high-profile leaders but also the social and political tensions of their times. Most famously, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer, in April 1865 at Ford’s Theatre.

After Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency, during a 1912 campaign stop in Milwaukee, Roosevelt was shot by John Schrank, a saloonkeeper. The bullet lodged in his chest after penetrating his steel eyeglass case and a thick copy of the speech he was carrying. Remarkably, Roosevelt delivered his speech with the bullet still in his body.

In 1933, before his inauguration, Franklin D. Roosevelt was targeted in Miami by Giuseppe Zangara. Zangara missed Roosevelt but killed Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak and wounded several others. Zangara claimed his motive was hatred of all rulers.

In 1950, two Puerto Rican nationalists attempted to storm Blair House, where Harry S. Truman was residing during White House renovations. The attackers and White House police exchanged gunfire, resulting in the death of one officer and one attacker.

John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas, a tragic event that has spawned numerous conspiracy theories. Prior to his death, Kennedy was reportedly the target of a thwarted attempt in December 1960 in Palm Beach, Florida.

President Gerald Ford survived two assassination attempts in September 1975, both by women associated with the radical group the Symbionese Liberation Army. Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme attempted to shoot Ford in Sacramento, but her gun failed to fire. Later that month, Sara Jane Moore fired a shot at Ford in San Francisco but missed.

In 1981, Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley Jr. outside a Washington D.C. hotel. The bullet punctured a lung and narrowly missed Reagan’s heart. Hinckley’s motive was reportedly to impress actress Jodie Foster.
