George Clooney didn’t receive pushback after running anti-Biden op-ed by Obama before publishing

Actor George Clooney ran his op-ed calling for President Joe Biden to step down by former President Barack Obama, who reportedly didn’t give any pushback.

Following a rough week after his debate performance, Biden appeared to have quelled a rebellion within his party, resulting in most lawmakers closing ranks behind him. This wall of unity began to crack after a series of blows on Wednesday, one of which was an op-ed from Clooney, who said Biden wasn’t mentally capable of running for reelection and that Democrats must move to replace him.

The actor had run the piece by Obama before sending it in — to which he received no major pushback, according to Politico.

People familiar with the exchange said the former president hadn’t encouraged or advised him on writing the op-ed, but the lack of any pushback is likely to be seen as a betrayal within the Biden camp.

The reveal had been predicted by the Daily Mail’s Charlie Spiering shortly after Clooney’s op-ed was published.

“Few celebrities are closer with Obama than George Clooney – You can bet he ran this statement about Biden by Barack before it went public,” he posted on X.

Obama had been one of the stars of the glitzy fundraiser hosted by Clooney last month. In his op-ed, the actor said Biden’s alleged cognitive decline was on full display and that he was “the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”

A Biden campaign official undercut the basis for Clooney’s op-ed, saying Clooney only appeared at the fundraiser briefly for a photo, while Biden was there for more than three hours.

The Washington Examiner reached out to Obama for comment.

In response to a request for comment, Biden campaign spokesman Seth Schuster referred the Washington Examiner to the president’s letter on Monday in which he pledged to stay in the race.

Though close friends with Obama, Clooney has had a more tense relationship with Biden. Last month, he called the White House to complain about Biden’s attacks on the International Criminal Court’s issuing arrest warrants for Israeli leaders — cases his wife, Amal Clooney, had worked on.

Obama has been publicly supportive of Biden since the debate rocked the political world, tacking it down to simply a bad night.

“Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know,” he posted on X. “But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit. Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November.”

But behind closed doors, reports quickly emerged of a harsher analysis from Biden’s former boss. Despite the glowing public statement after the debate, a report from the Washington Post said Obama was privately voicing concerns.

Ben Shapiro trolls Democrats for focus on Project 2025

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro trolled Democrats over their focus on the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 in an appearance before the House Judiciary Committee.

While testifying in front of the House Judiciary Committee over the Global Alliance for Responsible Media’s alleged targeting of his company, the Daily Wire, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) redirected the conversation toward Project 2025. Pointing out renewed popular interest in it, the California Democrat asked Shapiro if he agreed with its suggestions.

“Like President Trump, I haven’t looked all that deeply at Project 2025, but it seems that Democrats on this committee are sort of like Peter Pan and Tinker Bell,” Shapiro responded. “If they say Project 2025 enough, their presidential candidate becomes alive again.”

The remarks drew laughter from the crowd and a brief smile from Swalwell.

Swalwell then moved to ask about certain parts of Project 2025, adding that he agreed with wanting to cut bureaucracy and increase government efficiency.

“Congrats on becoming a Republican,” Shapiro quipped.

“My parents would be proud,” Swalwell responded, chuckling.

Shapiro was testifying following a report from the committee showing that GARM had likely illegally colluded to silence conservative figures and outlets.

Project 2025 has taken on an almost mythic position in the eyes of Democrats, with fears over its policy suggestions becoming a cornerstone of President Joe Biden’s 2024 campaign. The severity of attacks on the Heritage Foundation‘s project led to former President Donald Trump publicly disavowing it last week.

The group issued a clarification of its proposals on Tuesday, rebutting allegations that it was proposing anything radical.

Fresh off high-stakes interview, Stephanopoulos doubtful Biden ‘can serve four more years’

ABC News host George Stephanopoulos said he doesn’t believe President Joe Biden can serve another four years as president.

The former Clinton communications director made the remarks answering a question from a passerby, seemingly not knowing he was being recorded. Though the audio was hard to make out, he indirectly confirmed his remarks in a statement to Puck News.

“Earlier today I responded to a question from a passerby. I shouldn’t have,” he told the outlet in a statement through a spokesperson.

An ABC News spokesperson distanced the company from the remarks, saying, “George expressed his own point of view and not the position of ABC News.”

Footage showing Stephanopoulos in workout clothes on the streets of New York was published by TMZ on Tuesday, in which a passerby asked the host, “Do you think Biden should step down? You’ve talked to him more than anybody else has lately.”

“I don’t think he can serve four more years,” he appeared to respond.

The ABC News host’s interview with Biden was viewed by 8.5 million people. It was seen by Biden and his team as a crucial test to show off his cognitive abilities, assuring a frightened Democratic Party that he was still up for the job after a disastrous debate performance.

Despite hyping up the interview, his performance didn’t impress many. Particularly harsh in his criticism was top Democratic strategist and former Obama adviser David Axelrod.

“Biden could be excused for wanting to put his awful debate performance in the rear view mirror. That was his purpose Friday in sitting down for the interview —  to try and quell the panic that has gripped the Democratic Party,” he wrote in an op-ed for CNN. “He didn’t succeed.”

Barron Trump makes first appearance at campaign rally as Donald builds him up

Barron Trump made his first campaign rally appearance at a Trump rally near Miami.

Trump, 18, was introduced by his father, former President Donald Trump, as part of a wider series of shoutouts to family members and supporters at the rally.

“And a very young man. This is a young man. He just turned 18,” the former president said, taken aback by the loud applause that accompanied him.

“A very young man who’s now going to college, got into every college he wanted to, and he made his choice,” Donald Trump continued. “And he’s a very good guy, I’ll tell you. You know, I’m not allowed to call them boy, but he is my boy. He’s my boy. They’re all my boys, right? When you have sons, it could be any age. They’re your boy, they’re always going to be, and he’s a very special guy, Barron Trump!”

“This is the first time he’s done this. Barron!” he added, with further emphasis. “Stand up, look at him.”

Barron Trump was met with extended applause, standing up and waving to the crowd.

“That’s the first time he’s done it. That’s the first time, right? You’re pretty popular,” the former president said. “He may be more popular than Don and Eric; we’ve got to talk about this. Hey, Don, we’ve got to talk about this, huh?”

“All right, so Barron, it’s good to have you,” he continued. “Welcome to the scene, Barron! I don’t know, he had such a nice, easy life. Now it’s a little bit changed. Anyway, special guy, right?”

Barron Trump’s campaign introduction reflects his growing visibility, having made one of his first public appearances at a dinner this spring. He was also seen golfing with his father in a leaked video showing the former president deriding President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris shortly after the Trump-Biden debate.

Notably, Ivanka Trump, a major part of the first administration, was absent from the event, reflecting her stated desire to withdraw from politics largely. Barron Trump’s mother, former first lady Melania Trump, was also absent.

Barron Trump was asked to be a Florida delegate at the Republican National Convention but declined.

United Airlines Boeing plane loses wheel during takeoff from Los Angeles

A United Airlines Boeing plane lost a wheel while taking off from Los Angeles.

The detached wheel landed on an aircraft in an airport employee parking lot, smashing a car window. No casualties were reported, however, and the plane safely landed in Denver.

The aircraft was a Boeing 757-200 with 174 passengers on board, according to FlightRadar24 data reviewed by the Guardian. Production of the aircraft ceased in 2004.

“The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,” United said in a statement on Monday.

The incident is the latest of several technical problems with Boeing aircraft that started in January when a door plug blew off an Alaskan Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 midflight. The company has since been plagued by technical problems and whistleblower complaints.

Boeing agreed to plead guilty to defrauding the government in a lawsuit over two crashes of the 737 Max plane in 2018 and 2019, according to a court filing released on Sunday.

Project 2025 clarifies its policy proposals in ‘myths vs. facts’ rebuttal

The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 issued a rare, detailed rebuke of its critics, clarifying its policy suggestions.

Project 2025 has taken on an almost mythic position in the eyes of Democrats, with fears over its policy suggestions becoming a cornerstone of President Joe Biden’s 2024 campaign. The severity of attacks on the Heritage Foundation’s project led to former President Donald Trump publicly disavowing it last week. While the project has been mostly silent regarding its critics, its X account issued a public rebuttal of a slew of accusations that were shared by liberal actor Mark Hamill.

Hamill shared a list of the supposed agenda of Project 2025, including a complete abortion ban, banning contraceptives, ending no-fault divorce, eliminating labor protections, raising taxes on the working class, cutting Social Security and Medicare, condemning single mothers, banning gay marriage, raising prescription drug prices, ban books and curriculum about slavery, and ending civil rights protections in government.

“With fear for our Democracy, I dissent,” Hamill said about the list.

Of the 31 items listed, Project 2025 said only five were true or partially true — eliminating the Department of Education, using taxpayer money for religious schools, increasing Arctic drilling, deregulating big businesses and big oil, and expediting capital punishment. The rest of the items were labeled false, mostly false, or misleading.

While many items on the list were found to be mischaracterizations, others were completely made up with no mentions from Project 2025, including ending no-fault divorce, banning contraceptives, a Muslim ban, and banning gay marriage.

Other items on the list were mentioned in policy proposals, but the opposite of them was suggested, such as raising taxes on the working class. Project 2025 said it advocates lower taxes on all people.

Project 2025 also clarified that it was not affiliated with Trump.

Despite Trump’s disavowal, Democrats have only intensified their efforts to link Trump with the project.

“Trump is so desperate to distance himself from Project 2025 as the American people are grappling with the terrifying truth about his second term agenda that he and his team overhauled the Republican platform process to keep the public and the press in the dark, all caps-ed 20 bullet points behind closed doors, and blasted it out to divert attention from his real plans: a national abortion ban, handouts for his billionaire donors on the backs of middle-class Americans, cuts to Medicare and Social Security, and to be a dictator on ‘day one,’” DNC National press secretary Emilia Rowland said in a Monday statement.

Trump first commented on the project last week, saying he knew nothing about it but thought some aspects were “ridiculous and abysmal.”

“Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them,” he said.

James Carville says Democrats will lose presidency unless last-ditch mini-primary held thumbnail

James Carville says Democrats will lose presidency unless last-ditch mini-primary held

Democratic strategist James Carville predicted Democrats are guaranteed to lose the presidential election if they don’t remove President Joe Biden and replace him with a candidate selected from a last-ditch mini-primary.

Carville joined the growing chorus of Democrats calling for Biden to step down and ruled out replacing him immediately with Vice President Kamala Harris, instead laying out a detailed plan for how to replace him in a mini-primary of sorts, as floated by Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) and others. Carville’s spin would have former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton select a group of nominees who would then be voted on.

Michael Bennet (D-CO) at a campaign stop at the Spotlight Room at the Palace, Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, in Manchester, New Hampshire. (AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)

“We’re going to nominate a new ticket in a highly democratic and novel way, not in the backrooms of Washington, D.C., or Chicago,” Carville wrote in an op-ed for the New York Times.

“I want to see the Democratic Party hold four historic town halls between now and the Democratic National Convention in August — one each in the South, the Northeast, the Midwest, and the West,” he continued. “We can recruit the two most obvious and qualified people in the world to facilitate substantive discussions: Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.”

He then suggested that the two former presidents would select eight candidates, with one being Harris. Carville argued that eight was the maximum in order to make the town hall manageable.

“Town halls will give Americans a fresh look at Ms. Harris and introduce them to our deep bench of smart, dynamic, tested leaders,” he said. “In addition, Democratic delegates will get to further grill and stress-test these leaders in public and private meetings before a formal vote of all the delegates at the Democratic convention.”

Carville compared the enthusiasm that would be whipped up by the hypothetical matchup to the Super Bowl.

Though being open to changing some details, the leading strategist argued that what he outlined was the best way to proceed forward.

“A super democratic process, the opposite of what Mr. Trump and his MAGA minions would do, is how we’re going to honor that wisdom in our own ‘Will democracy prevail?’ moment,” Carville concluded.

The suggestion is one of the most thorough outlines of how Biden could be replaced not by Harris.

Most Democrats have remained lockstep behind the president, with only a handful of congressmen openly calling on Biden to drop out. The president, for his own part, has declared his intention to stay on the Democratic ticket in a letter published Monday.

Matt Gaetz to announce creation of Congressional El Salvador Caucus thumbnail

Matt Gaetz to announce creation of Congressional El Salvador Caucus

EXCLUSIVE — Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is set to announce the creation of a bipartisan Congressional El Salvador Caucus.

Gaetz traveled to El Salvador last month to attend the second inauguration of President Nayib Bukele, alongside Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) and other members of Congress. Gonzalez will be the inaugural co-chairman of the caucus.

In a press release from Gaetz’s office, the new caucus was described as aiming to better promote understanding of the relationship between El Salvador and the United States, strengthen bilateral relations, and promote understanding of the country among members of Congress and their constituents.

Gaetz has given high praise to Bukele both before and after his trip, holding him up as a model for American conservatives to follow.

Recently, Gaetz introduced legislation that would require the Internal Revenue Service to accept bitcoin as payment for federal income taxes. His move was credited to his trip to El Salvador, where he met with Bukele. One of Bukele’s first efforts was adopting bitcoin as legal tender in the country, an embrace that Gaetz wants to recreate in the U.S.

Bukele’s approach to governance has also earned him some critics in the U.S., however. The Salvadoran president’s strongman approach to gangs has earned him criticism from some U.S. Democrats, such as Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who has voiced concerns about his human rights record. Gaetz was one of the first to defend Bukele from Omar’s criticism in January.

Bukele won the 2019 election on an anti-establishment platform, particularly around promises to crack down on gang violence, which had paralyzed the country. Years into his administration, a massive statewide crackdown on gangs in 2022 effectively destroyed the infamous MS-13 and 18th Street gangs, which had de facto ruled the country for more than a decade. Roughly 75,163 suspected gang members were arrested, according to Al Jazeera, and thrown in specially designed prisons.

For all its criticism, the policy has led the Massachusetts-sized country to go from the most violent country on Earth to one of the safest, boasting the second-lowest murder rate in the Western Hemisphere behind only Canada.

Though the murder rate had declined for several years since an all-time peak in 2015 of 106 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, largely due to government negotiations with, and appeasement of, the two leading gangs, Bukele’s approach effectively broke the power of the gangs. El Salvador’s current murder rate is 92% lower than that of 2015, while the number of Salvadorans attempting to illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico border declined by 44%, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Count Binface, a stunt-obsessed Davey, and a returning Farage: Big players in the UK election thumbnail

Count Binface, a stunt-obsessed Davey, and a returning Farage: Big players in the UK election

Voters in the United Kingdom will head to the polls on July 4 to choose their next government, with polls indicating that the results will be historic.

After 14 years of Conservative rule, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to lead the party into one of the greatest defeats in electoral history, going from a majority to its lowest share of votes since being established in 1834. The party has managed to whip up the anger of the left-wing and center parties through its economic policies while enraging further right-wing voters by failing to follow through with promises to reduce immigration, instead sending it to record highs.

The next prime minister will be decided by which party, or coalition of parties, wins the majority of seats.

Here are all the key players to know in the U.K. election:

Rishi Sunak — Conservatives

Sunak took over as prime minister in October 2022 after the record-short tenure of former Prime Minister Liz Truss. He was credited with providing a degree of much-needed stability to the government and bringing some modest economic gains. However, it was a string of unfulfilled promises that cratered his perception.

Upon his accession to the premiership, Sunak delivered five promises: to halve inflation, grow the economy, reduce debt, cut National Health Service waiting lists, and “stop the boats,” referring to the trafficking of illegal immigrants coming to Britain across the English Channel.

Nearly two years later, Sunak only accomplished a single goal, more than halving inflation, while failing on the rest. One of the failures was spurring economic growth, one of the U.K.’s worst economic malaise.

One of the most important issues that has helped bleed support was his handling of illegal immigration. He oversaw a small decrease in illegal boat arrivals in 2023, after a record high in 2022, but the first half of 2024 saw a resurgence of arrivals.

He staked much of his immigration plan on a scheme to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda. As of the election, not a single migrant had been deported to Rwanda. The result was disappointment from the Right and Left.

His move to call early elections in May baffled observers, as the polls were already clear and he still had until the end of the year to wait – time he could have spent improving his record.

Sunak’s perception has been further crippled by a series of gaffes, particularly one surrounding the 80th commemoration ceremony of the D-Day landings. After some initial commemorations, the prime minister left Normandy to fly back to the U.K. to record an interview. He left before the main event featuring surviving World War II veterans, leaving one of the key participants of the landings out of the central photos with President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron. Nearly all segments of British society roundly decried the episode, made worse after a half-hearted apology.

His series of missteps, along with longstanding dissatisfaction with Conservative rule, has set the table for what appears could be the greatest electoral defeat in U.K. history.

Keir Starmer – Labour

Following a blistering defeat in the 2019 elections, the Labour Party underwent a period of soul-searching. Sir Keir Starmer seized control from the former party head Jeremy Corbyn, whose socialism had turned off much of the electorate, in 2020. He spent the next four years rebranding Labour into a moderate, center-left party. He cracked down on long-standing allegations of antisemitism and departed from the far-left leanings of the party.

His efforts appear to have largely been successful, given the expected sweep from Labour. Starmer has touted his remolding of the party as one of his prime accomplishments.

“I have changed this Labour Party, dragged it back to service, and I will do exactly the same for Westminster,” he said.

He has pushed Labour to take positions at odds with its traditional standing, such as becoming tougher on crime, but which translate to a greater appeal to swing voters. Starmer’s stress on law and order can be found in his former career as a lawyer and prosecutor.

But Starmer himself represents something of an enigma – he is best characterized by his pragmatism, flexibility, and desire to get Labour back into power. One descriptor never found alongside his name is “charismatic.” The New York Times described his rhetorical style as “bland,” and the Telegraph described his manifesto as the “dullest on record.”

Starmer’s cautious approach to campaigning has drawn him heavy criticism, especially from his left flank. But the strategy appears to have pulled off – a WeThink/Economist “mega-poll” found that Labour is expected to win 465 of the 632 total parliamentary seats, a stunning turnaround from their embarrassing 2019 loss. He is expected to become the U.K.’s next prime minister.

For all its criticism, the Labour leader’s reserved, cautious approach will likely serve as a vindication of Napoleon Bonaparte’s famous maxim – “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”

Ed Davey – Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats, liberal economically and socially, are in an odd position in U.K. politics, seen by many as the eternal loser. The last Lib Dem (in the form of the then-Liberal Party) prime minister departed office before the Soviet Union was established. They have played roles in some governments since, but have remained a clear minority party.

Sir Ed Davey, 58, took over as head of the party in 2020 and has gambled on a series of publicity stunts, perhaps hoping to inject fun and dynamism into the bland campaigns of Labour and the Tories.

In one recent stunt, he went bungee jumping, yelling “Do something you’ve never done before: vote Liberal Democrat!” as he bounced on the cord.

In another, he raced a farmer in a yellow tractor – the color of the Lib Dems. He’s purposefully fallen off a paddle board, gone down water slides, played Jenga, baked bread, rode bicycles, done group exercises in a pool, and tried “Wipeout” style obstacle courses.

In an op-ed for the Guardian, Davey said that his stunts were meant to show he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

“The ‘stunts’ hopefully show that I do not take myself too seriously,” he wrote. “But what I do treat with the utmost importance are the issues that people have raised with me and the stakes at this election, which could not be higher.”

While it can’t be guaged how much of the likely impending success can be owed to the amusing publicity stunts, the Lib Dems are set to see their best electoral results since 2010. The Economist even estimated that there’s a chance they could win more seats than the Tories, a historic accomplishment.

Nigel Farage – Reform U.K.

Nigel Farage used his charisma and populist sentiments to become one of the most influential politicians in the U.K., playing a key role in pushing the biggest geopolitical development in recent U.K. history – Brexit. After the successful vote, Farage resigned as head of the U.K. Independence Party, arguing that he never wanted to be a career politician.

He kept a lower profile in U.K. politics since, departing Parliament in 2020 and announcing his official retirement in March 2021. He spent his retirement partly by making paid Cameo videos exalting Irish Republicans, “Big Chungus,” and other memes upon user request.

Then, in a shock move, Farage announced his surprise return to politics on June 3, 2024, running as head of the Reform Party and the minister of Parliament for the coastal constituency of Clacton.

The move will likely go down as one of the final nails in the coffin of Sunak and the Tories – offering disgruntled conservatives a further-right alternative to the Conservatives, especially those angry over the party’s failure on immigration.

Farage has been speaking to packed crowds denouncing the Tories and forcing the insecure Conservatives further right.

With Farage’s leadership, Reform, which hasn’t won a seat before, is expected by the Economist to win 14% of the national vote and three seats.

Count Binface – Independent

Sunak faces a daunting, direct challenge in his constituency in the form of the supposed 5,900-year-old space warrior, Count Binface.

The satirical candidate is the doing of comedian Jonathan David Harvey, who ran in earlier elections as Lord Buckethead. He was forced to retire the persona amid a copyright dispute.

Count Binface, dressed in a cartoonish space costume and trash-bin-looking mask, has touted outlandish electoral promises, such as nationalizing the musician Adele, price-capping croissants at £1.10, and to “make water bosses take a dip in British rivers, to see how they like it,” 1843 Magazine reported.

His first election showing was against Boris Johnson in 2019.  In a surprise defeat in the 2021 London mayoral election, he earned just 1% of the vote, 24,775 votes, losing to Labour’s Sadiq Khan.

One of Binface’s primary motives is the procedure of all candidates being photographed beside one another, meaning the prime minister of one of history’s greatest empires will be pictured next to a man wearing a trash can.

The British political system requires that candidates only need to pay a £500 fee and get the signatures of 10 constituents, making prank candidates a common occurrence.

In a self-aware moment, Harvey expressed pride in his native country over his ability to pull off the stunt.

“I want to prove to the omniverse that it’s still possible for anyone from any planet to stand for election, whatever your platform,” Binface told the 1843 Magazine. “And I just think that says everything about what makes Britain great.”

Trump campaign backs loyalists over anti-abortion activists for RNC positions thumbnail

Trump campaign backs loyalists over anti-abortion activists for RNC positions

Former President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign backed loyalists for Republican National Committee positions while blocking two hard-line anti-abortion activists.

The move reflects the campaign’s concerns over abortion in November, an issue that tends to favor Democrats in popularity on the national stage. Several members of the RNC revealed the blocking of South Carolina convention delegates LaDonna Ryggs and Chad Connelly for the platform committee to Politico.

Delegates will gather in Milwaukee to decide on the RNC’s platform beginning Sunday. Ryggs and Connelly pledged not to “water down” the party’s positions on abortion, marriage, and Israel, while the delegates favored by the Trump campaign pledged to support his positions.

The Washington Examiner reached out to Trump and the RNC for confirmation and comment.

The fear among anti-abortion hard-liners is that Trump will push through a change in the platform to his publicly favored leave-it-to-the-states position, in contrast to the current nationwide ban after 20 weeks. Ryggs and Connelly believe that a softening on abortion could cost the former president the election.

“I would strongly urge the leadership of the Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign to proceed with great caution on the platform and avoid doing anything that would discourage or in any way deflate the enthusiasm of pro-life and evangelical voters,” Faith & Freedom Coalition Chairman Ralph Reed said. “Right now, sitting here today, they are prepared to crawl across broken glass, to do everything in their power to see President Trump reelected. I don’t want to see anything happen that would change that current dynamic.”

Danielle Alvarez, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign and the RNC, maintained that the specific language regarding abortion is still undecided.

After Democrats fought off a much-anticipated “Red Wave” in 2022, largely using the energy from abortion-rights activists angered over the repeal of Roe v. Wade, Trump has sought to establish a centrist stance on abortion.
