Fetterman denies reaching out to Harris campaign with concerns about Shapiro

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has denied claims he lobbied against the selection of Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.

“No, I never directed anyone on my team or anyone to do that. So that’s just not true,” Fetterman told MSNBC’s Ali Vitali when asked if his team had reached out to the Harris campaign with concerns about a potential Shapiro pick.

He added that any concern that “ever existed with the current governor has nothing to do with anything that’s been talked about or any kind of public baggage.”

Fetterman’s comments came in the wake of a Politico report published Saturday alleging that the senator’s advisers had contacted the vice president’s team to voice concerns about a Harris-Shapiro ticket.

The advisers reportedly suggested that Fetterman believed his fellow Pennsylvania Democrat was “excessively focused on his own personal ambitions,” the report stated.

One of the pair’s reported disagreements involved their time serving on Pennsylvania’s Board of Pardons together, where they clashed on the commutation process for convicts.

“Is this just one of those old political rivalries in the same state or deeper policy issues like ones you reference on sentencing?” Vitali asked Fetterman.

“If you’d like to ask, you can ask [Shapiro]. But I thought I was here to talk about, you know, where we’re at now,” Fetterman responded.

“I just don’t understand why we’re talking about a choice that was already made,” he added when asked about speculation that Shapiro was passed over due to his pro-Israel stance. “I was very clear that the vice president is perfectly capable of picking whoever they want. They have effectively unlimited funding. She has access to every Democratic expert, and she made her choice, and that’s where we’re at right now, and he’s right out on that stage right now in Wisconsin.”

“Why are we talking about this weird stuff? I don’t understand that,” he added.

Virginia school district launches pilot program banning cellphone access thumbnail

Virginia school district launches pilot program banning cellphone access

Seven Virginia public middle schools will participate in a pilot program to ban students’ access to cellphones during the school day.

Starting in the 2024-25 school year, students at select Fairfax County schools will receive a personal cellphone storage pouch known as a Yondr pouch.

At school each morning, each student will lock his or her cellphone inside a magnetic pouch and keep it in his or her backpack for the duration of the school day. At the end of the day, the students will use a Yondr unlocking station to open the pouches and retrieve their phones.

Teachers will be instructed not to use cellphones for class activities, and parents can contact the front office if they need to reach their child in an emergency, Fairfax County Public Schools said on its website. Students who forget their pouches will have to store their phones in the front office during the school day.

“The purpose of the pilot program is to create a more engaged learning environment for students, free of distraction from cellphones and social media,” FCPS said. “Studies show that students who use their cellphones during instructional time focus less, learn less, and achieve lower grades.”

“FCPS has rules against students using cellphones in class, but having to constantly enforce these rules takes time, energy, and focus away from teaching,” the school district added. “By locking cell phones, our teachers can spend more time teaching and less time asking students to put their phones away.”

The schools participating in the pilot program include Frost Middle School, Irving Middle School, Jackson Middle School, Poe Middle School, Robinson Secondary School, Thoreau Middle School, and Twain Middle School.

It comes a month after Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) signed an executive order to establish “cellphone-free education” in Virginia public K-12 schools, citing concern over a youth mental health crisis driven by social media and cellphone usage.

School districts across the country have also experimented with Yondr pouches as a way of curbing cellphone use in classrooms. In the past eight years, school districts in 41 states have spent $2.5 million to buy Yondr pouches, NBC News reported at the end of last year.

Nearly 100 Ohio dispensaries can begin recreational marijuana sales Tuesday thumbnail

Nearly 100 Ohio dispensaries can begin recreational marijuana sales Tuesday

Nearly 100 Ohio dispensaries will be allowed to sell recreational marijuana starting Tuesday.

The Ohio Division of Cannabis Control announced Monday it will issue its first set of dual-use certificates of operation to 98 eligible dispensaries across the state. It plans to issue certificates to all remaining eligible dispensaries later this week.

“Once an entity has received its COO, it is legally authorized to begin the sale of non-medical cannabis in addition to medical cannabis,” the DCC said. “However, the issuance of COOs does not necessarily mean non-medical sales will begin immediately at every dispensary, as each licensee must determine when they will start sales based on factors including staffing, stock and other business considerations.”

The announcement comes nine months after a majority of Ohio voters approved a November 2023 ballot initiative allowing adults aged 21 and older to grow up to six plants per person (or 12 plants per household) at home, as well as buy and possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis.

Non-medical marijuana sales will be subject to a 10% tax, with the revenue to be distributed between a social equity and jobs program, substance abuse and addiction services, local governments, and administrative costs.

In order to be certified, dispensaries must demonstrate their ability to process adult use and medical sales properly, validate that their security system meets legal requirements, and agree to ensure that inventory remains available for medical patients, among other requirements, according to the DCC.

Maryland police officer facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly mistreating his K-9 companion

A Maryland police canine officer is being charged with animal cruelty after allegedly mistreating the dog assigned to him, police said Thursday.

Cpl. David Acosta of the Prince George’s County Police Department is facing three animal cruelty charges, one of which is a felony, in connection with the mistreatment of a two-year-old bloodhound named Daisy.

Acosta was suspended earlier this month for an unrelated incident, police said. During the suspension process, canine handlers were ordered to pick up Daisy and Acosta’s other dog, a Belgian Malinois named Spartacus.

After they retrieved the dogs, the handlers noticed injuries related to an e-collar on Daisy’s neck, according to police. The bloodhound was taken to a veterinarian for treatment. In addition to the collar-related injuries, she had other medical conditions requiring care.

The department launched an investigation that led to the charges against Acosta.

“This situation involving Daisy is appalling. She is a part of the PGPD family,” Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz said in a statement. “I expect that all of our handlers treat their canine partners with the utmost care and concern.”

Acosta has been with the PGPD since 2006 and is currently assigned to the special operations division. He will be suspended without pay.

The department has also implemented new policies to ensure the proper treatment of its canines moving forward, including weekly visual inspections of the dogs, bimonthly in-depth inspections, and biannual kennel inspections.

Aziz said Daisy is “doing well and back to work.”

“To the best of our knowledge, this is the first incident of animal mistreatment in the 60-year history of the Canine Section,” the police chief said.

“Bloodhounds play a crucial role in our agency’s service to the community, primarily with assisting in searches for missing people,” he added.

UAW endorses Kamala Harris ahead of vice president’s Detroit rally

The United Auto Workers has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president ahead of Harris’s visit to Detroit next week.

The UAW said its executive board voted to endorse the president on Wednesday.

“Our job in this election is to defeat Donald Trump and elect Kamala Harris to build on her proven track record of delivering for the working class,” UAW President Shawn Fain said in a statement. “We stand at a crossroads in this country. We can put a billionaire back in office who stands against everything our union stands for, or we can elect Kamala Harris who will stand shoulder to shoulder with us in our war on corporate greed.”

“This campaign is bringing together people from all walks of life, building a movement that can defeat Donald Trump at the ballot box. For our one million active and retired members, the choice is clear: We will elect Kamala Harris to be our next President this November,” Fain added.

The UAW said Harris walked the picket line with striking autoworkers in 2019 and cited her work to combat corporate price gouging.

It said Harris will travel to Detroit next Wednesday to rally with UAW members, as well as meet directly with union members and leaders.

The UAW is one of the largest labor unions in the United States and has more than 400,000 active members, according to its website.

The union had previously endorsed President Joe Biden in January before Biden dropped his reelection bid earlier this month.

Its endorsement of Harris comes after Fain and former President Donald Trump have repeatedly traded jabs, with Trump calling for Fain to be fired at the Republican National Convention and the union calling Trump a “scab and a billionaire” in a post on X in July.

Trump slams FBI Director Wray for suggesting he may have been hit by shrapnel

Former President Donald Trump slammed the FBI director’s testimony that he may have been struck by shrapnel instead of a bullet in the July 13 assassination attempt on his life.

“FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress yesterday that he wasn’t sure if I was hit by shrapnel, glass, or a bullet (the FBI never even checked!), but he was sure that Crooked Joe Biden was physically and cognitively ‘uneventful’ — Wrong!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Thursday.

“No, it was, unfortunately, a bullet that hit my ear, and hit it hard,” the former president continued. “There was no glass, there was no shrapnel. The hospital called it a ‘bullet wound to the ear,’ and that is what it was. No wonder the once storied FBI has lost the confidence of America!”

Wray testified about the attempted assassination before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

During his testimony, he expressed uncertainty about whether Trump had been hit by a bullet when a shooter opened fire at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.

“With respect to former President Trump, there’s some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel that, you know, hit his ear,” Wray said at the hearing.

His statement sparked a backlash from some Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

“We’ve all seen the video, we’ve seen the analysis, we’ve heard it from multiple sources in different angles that a bullet went through his ear. I’m not sure it matters that much,” Johnson said.

Who is Roy Cooper? Meet one of the six top names on Harris’s VP short list

Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) is among the top names being floated as a running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris if she secures the Democratic presidential nomination.

The North Carolina governor, whose political career spans decades, has never lost an election in the battleground state and has received relatively strong job approval ratings during his time as governor.

He’s also a longtime friend of Harris, dating back to when the two were both attorneys general of their respective states.

Cooper endorsed Harris in a post on X on Sunday evening, saying the vice president “has what it takes to defeat Donald Trump.”

Here are a few things to know about the North Carolina Democrat.

Age

Cooper was born on June 13, 1957. He is 67 years old.

Hometown

Cooper was born and raised in Nash County, North Carolina. He lives in Raleigh, where the Executive Mansion is located.

Education

Cooper earned his undergraduate and law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Time in office

Cooper has served as the 75th governor of North Carolina since 2017. Because North Carolina law prohibits governors from serving more than two consecutive four-year terms, he is not eligible to run for office again in November.

Career

Before being elected governor, Cooper served as North Carolina’s attorney general for nearly 16 years. He previously served in the state Senate from 1991 to 2001, where he was majority leader his final 3 1/2 years, and the state House from 1987 to 1991. He practiced law prior to his time as a lawmaker too.

Religion

Cooper is a member of the Presbyterian Church. He has taught Sunday school and served as an elder and deacon in his church.

Family

Cooper is married to fellow attorney Kristin Cooper. They have three daughters: Hilary, Natalie, and Claire.

Major policy initiatives

Cooper’s power has largely been limited by a Republican-controlled state legislature during his time in office.

Still, he expanded Medicaid last year to hundreds of thousands of North Carolina residents, a move praised by President Joe Biden.

He lists public education as one of his top priorities and signed legislation authorizing pay raises for teachers earlier this month.

Cooper also vetoed legislation banning nearly all abortions after 12 weeks of gestation, but his veto was overridden by state lawmakers.

Comments on vice presidential candidacy

When asked on MSNBC’s Morning Joe about being Harris’s running mate, Cooper said, “I appreciate people talking about me, but I think the focus right now needs to be on [Harris] this week.”

“The vice presidential conversation needs to occur later,” he added. “I want to make sure that Kamala Harris wins. I’m going to work for her all over this country and do what I can to make sure we stop Donald Trump. And that’s what I’m concentrating on right now.”

Neo-Nazi leader of ‘Maniac Murder Cult’ plotted to poison Jewish children in NYC: DOJ

The alleged leader of a violent neo-Nazi extremist group plotted to hand out poisoned candy to Jewish and minority children in New York City, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

Georgian national Michail Chkhikvishvili, nicknamed “Commander Butcher,” was charged with soliciting hate crimes and acts of mass violence by a federal grand jury in Brooklyn.

Chkhikvishvili allegedly led the “Maniac Murder Cult,” or MKY, an international white supremacist group that follows a “neo-Nazi accelerationist ideology and promotes violence and violent acts against racial minorities, the Jewish community, and other groups it deems ‘undesirables.’”

The group’s goal is to challenge social order and governments via terrorism and violent acts that promote fear and chaos, according to the DOJ.

Since July 2022, Chkhikvishvili is alleged to have repeatedly encouraged others to commit violent hate crimes and other acts of violence on behalf of MKY.

An undercover FBI employee messaged Chkhikvishvili in September 2023 asking whether there was an application process to join MKY, to which Chkhikvishvili reportedly responded, “Well, yes, we ask people for brutal beating, arson, explosion, or murder vids on camera.”

Beginning in November 2023, Chkhikvishvili allegedly solicited the undercover employee to commit violent crimes for the purpose of harming racial minorities and Jewish people.

Chkhikvishvili began plotting a mass casualty attack for New Year’s Eve that involved an individual dressing up as Santa Claus and handing out poisoned candy to racial minorities in New York City. He gave the undercover FBI employee detailed instructions on creating and mixing lethal poisons, according to prosecutors.

Some of the materials Chkhikvishvili shared have been linked to radical Islamist jihadist groups and designated foreign terrorist organizations such as ISIS, prosecutors said.

“As alleged, the defendant sought to recruit others to commit violent attacks and killings in furtherance of his neo-Nazi ideologies,” Breon Peace, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement. “His goal was to spread hatred, fear, and destruction by encouraging bombings, arson, and even poisoning children, for the purpose of harming racial minorities, the Jewish community, and homeless individuals.”

If convicted, Chkhikvishvili faces up to 20 years in prison for solicitation of violent felonies, five years in prison for conspiring to solicit violent felonies, 20 years in prison for distributing information pertaining to the making and use of explosive devices, and five years in prison for transmitting threatening communications.

Trump Media stock spikes following assassination attempt

Trump Media & Technology Group’s stock soared on Monday after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

Shares in Trump Media, Truth Social’s parent company, spiked by more than 30% after trading began Monday morning. The stock is now valued at around $40 per share — up from $30.88 on Friday, the day before Trump was shot at a Pennsylvania rally.

The former president is the company’s largest shareholder, with 114.75 million shares valued at more than $4 billion.

Trump Media’s stock has been volatile since its debut, with the value of shares dropping dramatically after Trump’s conviction on felony charges in May and swinging after the former president’s debate with President Joe Biden last month.

It is often described as a “meme stock,” with shareholders trading based on hype rather than the company’s fundamental value.

“DJT is effectively the Trump election win proxy,” Matthew Tuttle, the CEO of Tuttle Capital Management, told CNN last month.

A campaign spokesperson said that Trump was “fine” after the shooting on Saturday. His son, Donald Trump Jr., said he was “in great spirits.”

One spectator was killed and two were critically injured in the shooting.

The former president is set to accept his party’s nomination at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week.

“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social on Sunday. “I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin.”
