Michigan football’s Sherrone Moore was dumped on Wednesday after the university said it uncovered “credible evidence” that the head coach carried on an inappropriate relationship with a staffer — a stunning fall for a man who took over the Wolverines just two seasons ago.
ESPN broke the news Wednesday afternoon, and the school quickly made it official. By nightfall, the scandal had deepened. Saline Police had detained Moore earlier in the day, transferring him to Pittsfield Township and then to the Washtenaw County Jail, according to reports.
Court records show Moore was arrested and booked as the investigation unfolded. Pittsfield Township Police said officers had responded to the 3000 block of Ann Arbor-Saline Road for an alleged assault, though they didn’t name Moore. The department kept details tight but said “a suspect in this case was taken into custody,” adding the incident did not appear random.

Moore, who coached full-time from 2024 to 2025, compiled a 17-8 record over two seasons. He previously served as interim coach during Michigan’s stormy 2023 stretch and returned to that role earlier this year during his two-game suspension tied to the Connor Stalions sign-stealing mess. Michigan finished the 2025 regular season at 9-3 and is headed to the Dec. 31 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Texas.
Biff Poggi steps in once again as interim coach. Poggi filled the same role when Moore was suspended earlier this season, guiding Michigan to wins over Central Michigan and Nebraska. Before returning to Ann Arbor, the former Maryland prep legend went 6-16 in parts of two seasons at Charlotte.
About 20 minutes after the firing hit headlines, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed the move in a blunt statement:
“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.
Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”
