President Donald Trump is partnering with legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus to renovate the President’s Golf Course at Joint Base Andrews, adding it to his ongoing list of high-profile construction initiatives.

During an aerial tour of the base aboard Marine One on Saturday, Trump announced plans to “fix up” the facility, which he described as a “great place that’s been destroyed over the years through lack of maintenance.” The project focuses on restoring two of the three 18-hole courses, which are currently in poor condition.

Niklaus’ design firm, which has renovated 425 golf courses worldwide, will be leading the effort.

Trump emphasized that the revamp could be achieved “for very little money,” aiming to reinstitute the recreational facilities and enhance the base’s overall upkeep, though details on funding are unclear as of this report. The project will likely not use any taxpayer funds and will be privately funded, as evidenced by the president’s privately-funded White House renovations.

Joint Base Andrews, located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, approximately 10-15 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., is a major U.S. military installation that serves as the primary departure and arrival point for the President and Vice President via Air Force One. Established in the 1940s and renamed in 1947 after Lt. Gen. Frank M. Andrews, it merged with Naval Air Facility Washington in 2009 to form the current joint base.

The President’s Golf Course is situated directly on Joint Base Andrews in Camp Springs, Maryland, about 15 miles from the White House, making it a convenient recreational spot for presidents. Managed by the 11th Force Support Squadron, the facility includes three 18-hole championship courses, three practice putting greens, two private practice areas, and a driving range.

Trump noted that at least two courses are in “very bad shape” and ripe for restoration.

“We’re doing some fix-up of the base, which it needs. We’re gonna try and reinstitute the golf courses. I’m meeting with the greatest Jack Nicklaus,” the president said on Saturday. “So we’ll fix that up, and Jack will be the architect and he’ll design it.”

Trump’s Andrews golf course revamp aligns with his broader White House and off-site renovation efforts.

President Trump announced earlier this month that he had authorized construction of a formal ballroom, which is set to be the first in White House history. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt previously announced back in July that the finished product will be a 90,000-square-foot ballroom that can accommodate approximately 650 seated guests and will stay true to the classical design of the executive residence.

“The White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders in other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building’s entrance,” Leavitt said, adding that the new ballroom will be “a much-needed and exquisite addition.”

Trump has made a number of additional upgrades to the White House, including the introduction of gold accents in the Oval Office and Cabinet Room, a “walk of fame” that includes portraits of former presidents, as well as a photo of an autopen to commemorate former President Joe Biden’s time in office.

In addition, Trump recently unveiled plans for a new national monument for the nation’s 250th birthday celebration next year. Models shared by the president depict a near identical construction of Paris’ iconic Arc de Triomphe.
