Two football players at the from the University of Alabama at Birmingham were allegedly stabbed by a teammate at the team’s training facility on Saturday, just hours ahead of their game against South Florida.
The two UAB football players were stabbed by a teammate during what the university described as an altercation inside the facility. The victims were promptly taken to a local hospital and reported to be in stable condition, with the university emphasizing their recovery and the availability of counseling support for the team.
One player was arrested as a result of the incident, but the team ultimately decided to proceed with the game, which they lost 48-18 to drop to an overall record of 3-8 on the year.
The names of the two stabbed players have not been publicly released by UAB or authorities, citing patient privacy and the ongoing investigation. Several players were deeply affected by the incident, a number of whom opted to sit out Saturday’s game, according to a report form ESPN.
UAB is located in downtown Birmingham, Alabama
The suspect has been identified as Daniel Israel Mincey, a 20-year-old redshirt freshman offensive lineman. He was taken into custody by campus police shortly after noon on the day of the attack.
Mincey, who stands 6-foot-4 and hails from Pompano Beach, Florida, transferred to UAB from the University of Kentucky in May 2025 ahead of the season. He was booked into Jefferson County Jail on charges of aggravated assault with attempt to murder, authorities told Fox News.
No motive has been publicly stated, and UAB officials have not confirmed his involvement, while attempts to reach his family were unsuccessful. Mincey appeared to be the only player arrested in connection with the event.
The football program, under interim coach Alex Mortensen, discussed the incident with his team ahead of Saturday’s game, while the university is offering counseling services to all players and staff in order to help process the traumatic incident.
Mortensen explained that the decision to play was driven by the players themselves, particularly to honor the graduating seniors on Senior Day, the team’s final home game of the season. After a team meeting, the group collectively agreed to compete as a way to provide closure and a sense of normalcy amid the chaos, Mortenson explained.
“More than anything, I’m grateful that those two players are in stable condition, and we will make sure that they have the support that they need. I hope you will join me in lifting them and their families in your thoughts and prayers, as our team is doing right now too,” the coach said post-game.
Some players opted to sit out, a decision that was respected by the team.

“We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition. Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect — another player — remains in custody, and an investigation is taking place. The team elected to play today’s game,” the university announced Saturday.
UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”
