President Donald Trump has revived a major Alaska infrastructure project with an executive order approving the Ambler Road, a 211-mile industrial route that will open access to one of America’s richest mineral regions.
Trump signed the order at the White House on Friday, calling the move “a big win for Alaska and a big win for America.” The road, which cuts through remote terrain to link existing highways with mineral deposits in northwest Alaska, had been shelved by the Biden administration in 2023.
“We’re making Alaska greater, bigger, and more powerful and job-producing,” Trump said during the signing. “It’s an economic gold mine, so to speak.”
The Ambler Road Project is expected to generate billions in new revenue by unlocking copper, zinc, and rare-earth deposits vital to both manufacturing and national defense. Trump blasted his predecessor for halting the plan, saying it “should have been long operating and making billions of dollars for our country.”
Under the order, the Bureau of Land Management will also expand energy exploration in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska, rolling back restrictions set by President Biden.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who joined Trump at the ceremony, said the move was critical for U.S. security. “This means we can rely on our resources, not on resources controlled by others,” he said, noting that China still dominates global production of key minerals.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright called the project “a win for Alaska, for American workers, and for our national economy.” He slammed Biden-era policies that limited domestic production. “Biden thought it was appropriate to offshore both of these industries outside of our country. That has not left us in a strong place,” Wright said.
Construction on the Ambler Road is scheduled to begin by spring 2026. Federal officials anticipate that the route will become a crucial corridor for mineral transportation and industrial development across northern Alaska.
The project’s revival signals Trump’s push to restore energy independence and reverse what he has described as “anti-American resource policies.” Supporters argue that it will create jobs, reduce reliance on foreign supply chains, and revitalize Alaska’s struggling economy.
“This is about unleashing America’s strength again,” Trump said. “We are going to power our own future.”
