Vance says Trump showed ‘courage’ in sparring at black journalists conference

Former President Donald Trump participated in a discussion at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention and Career Fair in Chicago on Wednesday. The conference took a combative turn when the event, which was running an hour behind schedule, started with aggressive questioning of Trump when ABC News journalist Rachel Scott questioned whether it was “appropriate” for him to be there.

Trump quickly clapped back at her series of questions as “very rude.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner — first question,” he reacted. “You don’t even say, ‘Hello, how are you?’”

The Republican nominee also tore into the conference for allegedly misleading him about the details of the event that were supposed to include his Democratic opponent.

“I think it’s a very rude introduction. I don’t know exactly why you would do something like that. Let me go a step further: I was told my opponent, whether it was Biden or Kamala, I was told my opponent was going to be here. It turned out my opponent isn’t here; you invited me under false pretenses,” Trump said.

“I think it’s disgraceful that I came here in good spirit. I love the black population of this country, I’ve done so much for the black population of this country,” the Republican presidential nominee said.

The journalists attending the conference audibly jeered Trump after he claimed, “I have been the best president for the black population since Abraham Lincoln.”

The combative exchange between the former president and the journalists on stage received many reactions from viewers.

“I’m a lifetime member of NABJ,” influencer Tariq Nasheed said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “But they sat up here and got COOKED by Trump today by trying to act like shills for the Democrats. If they would have been more objective, their grilling would not have backfired on them.”

Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), shared that the former president was courageous for attending the event.

“President Trump walked right into the NABJ conference and showed he had the courage to take tough questions,” Vance said on X, adding that the vice president backed out of the event. “While Kamala Harris continues to hide from any scrutiny or unfriendly media like the coward she is.”

Trump supporter and television personality Amber Rose said the leading Republican presidential nominee was “absolutely crushing this interview with @NABJ.”

Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner revealed that the live audience enjoyed the conversation with the former president. She was a co-moderator.

“What I loved about what you couldn’t see today was how much of that audience was enjoying the moment of hearing from a candidate that they might not always agree with — and that is the whole point,” Faulkner, who was a co-moderator on the panel interviewing Trump, said in reaction to the event.

Comedian Terence K. Williams called Trump’s pushback of journalist questions “the best thing” on the internet.

“Trump roasted this journalist like a thanksgiving turkey after she ambushed him without saying ‘Hello. Its the best thing you will watch on the internet today,” Williams said.

The Harris campaign reacted to the event by slamming Trump’s “hostility” at the conference.

“The hostility Donald Trump showed on stage today is the same hostility he has shown throughout his life, throughout his term in office and throughout his campaign for president as he seeks to regain power,” Harris campaign communications director Michael Tyler wrote in a press statement.

Hamadeh wins competitive GOP primary to replace Rep. Debbie Lesko in Arizona

Abe Hamadeh won a six-way GOP primary to replace outgoing Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) in a safe Republican district on Wednesday despite a last-minute endorsement from former President Donald Trump of opponent Blake Masters.

Hamadeh, who unsuccessfully ran for attorney general in 2022, received 29.8% of the vote with 86% of the ballots counted when the primary was called at 8:27 p.m. Eastern, according to the Associated Press. Meanwhile, Masters, who unsuccessfully ran for Senate in 2022, received 25.3% of the vote. Former Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), who resigned in 2017 after a scandal, and state Assembly Speaker Ben Toma, who had the endorsement of Lesko, received 16.5% and 21.2%, respectively.

WHO IS MARK KELLY? MEET ONE OF THE SIX TOP NAMES ON HARRIS’S VP SHORT LIST

Hamadeh had previously been the only candidate to hold a Trump endorsement in the race, while Masters had scored an endorsement from his running mate Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH). However, Trump issued a rare duel endorsement of both candidates Saturday evening, putting an end to any possible problems the competing endorsements could have posed.

While Trump called both candidates “spectacular,” he noted that Masters was a “very successful businessman” and “an incredibly strong supporter” of the MAGA movement. He said Hamadeh was “a fearless fighter for election integrity.”

Both Masters and Hamadeh were endorsed by Trump in 2022 and lost their respective races. In 2022, Hamadeh claimed, without evidence, that U.S. elections “have been hijacked” and promised a “day of reckoning” for “those who worked to rob President Trump in the rigged 2020 election.”

Neither Masters nor Hamadeh actually reside in the 8th Congressional District, in the Phoenix area. Masters lives in Tucson, according to records from the Federal Election Commission, over a two-hour drive away. Hamadeh also does not live in district. Instead, he resides in nearby Scottsdale, according to FEC filings.

There had been limited polling for this race, but both Hamadeh and Masters had been in the lead. According to campaign finance reports, Masters spent millions, with $3.5 million of his $4 million in receipts coming from candidate loans. Hamadeh spent $1.2 million, $400,000 of which came from his own pocket. Toma raised more than $1 million in the race. Only $43,000 of the $643,000 Franks raised came from donors; the rest was a loan.

Arizona’s 8th District, which encompasses northwest Phoenix and its suburbs, has a large retiree population and largely votes Republican. Hamadeh will likely go on to win the House seat in November against Democrat Gregory Whitten.

Trump says Harris isn’t ‘tough on crime,’ only ‘guys like me’

Former President Donald Trump tore into Vice President Kamala Harris‘s track record on crime, claiming the former prosecutor is only “tough on guys like” him because she is his 2024 opponent.

Trump traveled to Hershey, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday for his first rally in the state since the attempt on his life in Butler earlier this month.

Harris has taken to propping up her record as a prosecutor and attorney general of California to contrast herself with Trump, who was found guilty in Manhattan court of 34 counts of business fraud in May.

“In those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds: predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain,” she said during a rally last week in Wisconsin. “So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type.”

Like in recent visits, the former president opened his rally with a moment of silence for Corey Comperatore, the Trump supporter killed in Butler by would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crookes, before tearing into Harris.

“She’s a defund the police radical trying to pass herself off as a tough-on-crime prosecutor,” Trump said of Harris. “She wasn’t tough on crime. She’s only tough on guys like me because they want to go after their political opponents.”

The narrative that the Biden administration and its allies are prosecuting Trump to keep him out of the White House has been a centerpiece of his reelection bid.

“They’re just weak on crime. They don’t mind if somebody murders somebody,” Trump continued. “You can kill somebody now. Our country is sick. The mindset of our country is sick, and we’re not going to let her do to Pennsylvania what she did to California.”

Despite Harris’s recent campaign tactics, her record in law enforcement hurt her during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, with progressives questioning her commitment to criminal justice reform.

Harris also flirted with the “defund the police” movement and supported ending cash bail during the 2020 blowback to the death of George Floyd, which also cost her with moderate Democrats who gravitated to President Joe Biden during her previous White House bid.

Buttigieg suggests Trump didn’t ’even pretend’ to care about how Vance would govern thumbnail

Buttigieg suggests Trump didn’t ’even pretend’ to care about how Vance would govern

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg went after former President Donald Trump’s comments on his running mate from the National Association of Black Journalists convention Wednesday, suggesting he only picked him for votes, not for the job he’d do as vice-president.

Buttigieg’s comments on MSNBC come directly after Trump received a hostile reception at the convention, which Vice President Kamala Harris could not attend.

“Trump was asked about Vance and his answer was it doesn’t matter that much to the outcome who you pick for VP,” Buttigieg said, “which means it did not occur to him to even pretend to be interested in the impact of the vice presidential choice on the country.”

Trump earlier Wednesday said, “Historically, the vice president, in terms of the election, does not have any impact,” in response to a question about whether Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) is ready for the vice presidency.

Vance has received a torrent of animosity since he became Trump’s running mate, with many on the left branding him “weird.” Old clips have also resurfaced that Democrats have used to brand Vance as anti-woman. In a 2021 interview, he said “childless cat ladies” who work for the Biden administration, mentioning Harris in particular, are running the country.

Nevertheless, the Harris campaign has used them as fuel against Vance, who is somewhat viewed as dragging down Trump, instead of lifting him up in support. One week after the running mate announcement, Vance’s favorability rating was down 6 points, according to CNN.

Trump’s remarks likely will contribute to that speculation, and he noted that voters are voting for the president, not their running mate. Now Buttigieg and other Democrats are using Vance as fodder for their attacks on Trump.

Buttigieg is a popular pick to be Harris’s running mate, even though it appears her choice may be narrowed to a governor such as Govs. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) or Andy Beshear (D-KY).

The Biden administration official, along with Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), is among the top choices for Harris outside of a Democratic governor.

Senate Republicans urge Trump to stay away from Harris DEI controversy

Senate Republicans pleaded with former President Donald Trump to focus on policy Wednesday after he accused Vice President Kamala Harris of “turning black” to benefit herself politically.

Speaking to black journalists in Chicago, Trump was asked about recent comments by a number of congressional Republicans arguing she was a “DEI hire” because President Joe Biden promised to select a woman as his vice president.

The insinuation that Harris was not qualified for the job received reprimands from GOP leaders including Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who reportedly urged his conference to focus instead on Harris’s liberal voting record as she vies to replace Biden in the White House.

But Trump declined to do the same in his interview with the National Association of Black Journalists. Asked if he found the DEI comments “acceptable,” Trump proceeded to claim falsely that Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican heritage, did not present as black until later in her career.

“You know what, I respect either one. But she obviously doesn’t. Because she was Indian all the way, then all of a sudden, she made a turn. And she became a black person. And I think somebody should look into that,” Trump said.

Harris was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus during her time in the Senate and years before that a member of a black sorority at a historically black college.

The remark received a reprimand from some corners of the GOP, most prominently former Gov. Larry Hogan, who is running for Senate in deep-blue Maryland.

“It’s unacceptable and abhorrent to attack Vice President Harris or anyone’s racial identity,” he posted on X. “The American people deserve better.”

But Senate Republicans, who are in Washington, D.C., until Thursday before a monthlong summer recess, either sidestepped the comments or stated that Republicans will lose the election if their focus is anywhere except policy.

“I think the most important thing we can talk about is the policies and statements she’s made,” Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), the chairman of Senate Republicans’ campaign arm, said of Harris. “They’re just very radical.”

Sen. Thom Tillis, a centrist Republican from North Carolina, rattled off the border, national security, and the economy as the three issues that will send Republicans to Washington in November.

“We focus on that, we win,” he said. “We shift focus away from it, we start losing.”

The statements were directed at Republicans writ large, but the plea to Trump was unmistakable and in some cases explicit.

“That’s advice to all my colleagues in North Carolina who are running for reelection and anybody else who wants to sweep this town,” Tillis said when asked if his comments were directed at Trump. “And we need to sweep this town.”

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) defended Trump, denying he was questioning Harris’s black heritage but rather “making fun of the fact that she chooses it when it’s convenient.”

But he, too, said the remarks were not helpful. “It just opens him up for this kind of questioning, even though I think, as I’ve always said, we should take him seriously, not literally.”

Even close Trump allies steered clear of the racially tinged comments.

“I don’t get into all that stuff,” Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said. “Let him talk about what he wants to talk about. I’m talking about the bad shape our country is [in] right now because of her.”

GOP lawmakers grew accustomed to fielding the periodic controversies that marked Trump’s first presidential campaign and eventually his four years in the White House. But the political fallout from Wednesday’s comments has taken on added significance as Republicans try to find their footing after Democrats swapped out Biden at the top of the ticket.

Trump has begun to home in on Harris’s record, in particular her role as Biden’s so-called border czar. But his campaign has also been criticized for a lack of message discipline. Trump doubled down on the racial attacks, calling Harris a “stone cold phony” in a Wednesday post on Truth Social.

“She uses everybody, including her racial identity!” he said.

Senate Democrats quickly fundraised off the Trump interview, highlighting his comment that Harris “could be” a diversity hire. In an email, the Senate Majority PAC invoked Trump’s past “racist attacks,” including the times he doubted the authenticity of former President Barack Obama’s birth certificate.

Harris’s campaign denounced Trump’s remarks at the NABJ conference as an “absolute disaster.”

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign accused the media of engaging in “unhinged and unprofessional commentary,” including the insinuation that the interview was cut short because it was a “train wreck.”

The View’s Whoopi Goldberg reads from notecard claiming ‘Kamala Harris was never the ‘border czar”

The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg repeated a Democratic talking point that Vice President Kamala Harris is “not the ‘border czar‘” while reading off a notecard during the ABC show Wednesday.

“Let’s also, let’s get some factual information, right? Kamala Harris was never the ‘border czar.’ Never,” Goldberg said during a show panel discussion about dueling 2024 campaign ads from Harris and former President Donald Trump about the border crisis.

She continued to read from a notecard in her explanation.

“Her job was to deal and find out the root causes of migration from Central America. That was what Biden asked her to do. To lead diplomatic efforts to reduce poverty, violence, corruption in the Northern Triangle: Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador,” Goldberg read.

“Now, if y’all ain’t sure about this, ask Joe Biden. He gave her the job. She made sure that she went to all these countries to see what was going on,” she added. “That was the job she was asked to do, and that’s what she did.”

“So, if you’re going to go after her, at least try to be factual. I know you don’t like to do — they don’t like facts. They don’t like facts. I get it. I get annoyed,” Goldberg said.

Co-host Joy Behar said that “people need to be reminded” that Trump “killed the border bill.”

The legislation that Behar referred to was a $118 billion bipartisan bill that many conservatives in Congress rejected as an “amnesty bill.” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) said the bill that the former president opposed would have accepted “5,000 illegal immigrants a day and gives automatic work permits to asylum recipients — a magnet for more illegal immigration.”

Harris had been given the informal title of “border czar” in 2021 when President Joe Biden tasked her with handling the “root causes” of mass migration coming from Central and South America.

Following Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 election and his endorsement of Harris as the Democratic candidate in the presidential race, talking points about the immigration record of the vice president began circulating among Democratic lawmakers. The White House denied knowledge of the talking points.

Elon Musk accepts Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s challenge to a fight

Billionaire Elon Musk accepted a bizarre fight challenge from Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Wednesday.

During a national television appearance, Maduro challenged Musk to a fight after the Tesla executive has been alleging the Venezuelan election results were fraudulent and social media users on his platform X, formerly known as Twitter, have been widely sharing numerous videos from inside Venezuela of protests in his country.

“Maduro, leave! Venezuelans chose to end the communist dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro. The data announce a crushing victory of the opposition, and the world is waiting for you to recognize the defeat after years of socialism, misery, decadence and death,” Musk said in a post on X.

In a long, rambling speech earlier this week, Maduro labeled Musk an “arch enemy” of Venezuela and a “representation of fascism and the extreme right.” The Venezuelan leader also claimed Musk would invade his country with “his rockets and armies.”

Musk had laughed off Maduro’s claims by posting snarky comments in Spanish such as “the donkey knows more than Maduro.”

He added, “Sorry for comparing the poor donkey with Maduro. It is an insult to the animal world.”

Venezuelan leader challenged the tech mogul to a fight in his national television remarks.

“Do you want to fight? Let’s do it. Elon Musk, I’m ready. I’m not afraid of you, Elon Musk. Let’s fight, wherever you want,” Maduro declared.

On Wednesday afternoon, Musk responded by simply writing in two words, “I accept.”

Fans of Musk shared that their “money was on Elon.”

“2024 is turning out to be one of the craziest years in history,” one social media user responded on X.

“Maduro will just rig the fight too,” another person quipped.

“If I win, he resigns as dictator of Venezuela. If he wins, I give him a free ride to Mars,” Musk said to tech entrepreneur Mario Nawfal on X.

Musk had previously accepted a challenge to a cage fight with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg but despite the war of words between billionaires, the fight never came to fruition.

Last week when Musk visited Capitol Hill as a guest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a reporter refueled fight talk with Zuckerberg by asking the tech executive about his fight.

“I’ll fight Zuckerberg any place, any time, any rules,” Musk responded with an amused tone of voice.

Zuckerberg reacted to the renewed fight speculation on his social media platform Threads, “Are we really doing this again?”

In response to talk on X about the Maduro fight, Musk joked about both the fellow tech executive and the Venezuelan leader.

“Maduro is a big guy himself and probably knows how to fight, so this would be a real fight,” the SpaceX CEO said, adding, “Zuck is a little fella, so that would be a short fight lol.”

In a long, rambling speech earlier this week, Maduro labeled Musk an “arch enemy” of Venezuela and a “representation of fascism and the extreme right.” The Venezuelan leader also claimed Musk would invade his country with “his rockets and armies.” President Nicolas Maduro gestures during a news conference at Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas, Venezuela, Wednesday, July 31, 2024, three days after his disputed reelection. (AP Photo/Matias Delacroix) Musk had laughed off Maduro’s claims by posting snarky comments in Spanish such as “the donkey knows more than Maduro.” He added, “Sorry for comparing the poor donkey with Maduro. It is an insult to the animal world.” Venezuelan leader challenged the tech mogul to a fight in his national television remarks. “Do you want to fight? Let’s do it. Elon Musk, I’m ready. I’m not afraid of you, Elon Musk. Let’s fight, wherever you want,” Maduro declared. On Wednesday afternoon, Musk responded by simply writing in two words, “I accept.” I accept— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 31, 2024 Fans of Musk shared that their “money was on Elon.” “2024 is turning out to be one of the craziest years in history,” one social media user responded on X. Zuckerberg reacted to the renewed fight speculation on his social media platform Threads, “Are we really doing this again?” In response to talk on X about the Maduro fight, Musk joked about both the fellow tech executive and the Venezuelan leader.
