Jewish entrepreneur faces death threats after report detailing funding effort to oust Ilhan Omar

EXCLUSIVE — When the leading pro-Israel PAC chose not to support Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) primary challenger, Don Samuels, financially, one wealthy entrepreneur stepped up to mobilize Jewish voters against the anti-Israel Minnesota “Squad” member.

Michael Sinensky, co-founder of Israel Friends, a charity that has raised over $26 million for Israel since Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre, told the Washington Examiner he is facing death threats and accusations of Nazi affiliation following a report on his last-minute funding push for Omar’s opposition.

A handful of messages from a WhatsApp group chat were leaked in a Sunday report from the Intercept which detailed the efforts of Sinensky and others to infuse cash into the race. The Washington Examiner obtained every message from the group chat dating back to Oct. 23, 2023.

‘Weaponize our terror’: Setting the record straight on Sinensky

The outlet wrote that Sinensky, who has donated to several Democratic campaigns, “justified his support for the far-right” in messages where he framed the 2024 election landscape as a battle between parties whose fringe groups include “alt right Christian Neo Nazis” in the GOP and “socialist, Marxist, anarchists who are supporting radical Islam” among the Democratic ranks, in which the right-wing radicals are currently the lesser of two evils for Jewish Americans.

The messages were from July 12, a couple of weeks after the June 25 New York Democratic primary, when the group chat was called “Jews for Richie Torres.” The WhatsApp group has undergone three name changes and involved several different groups of people over the course of nine months. It was titled “Zionists for Don Samuels Against Ilhan Omar” during the Minnesota primary campaign, and the group’s name has changed again since.

Omar chided the group for what she described as “discussing their preference for ‘alt right Christian Neo Nazis’” in a Sunday press release responding to the report.

“The media often sensationalizes or mischaracterizes snippets of conversation to support the story they want to tell, and this case was no exception,” Sinensky said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “The outlet took screenshots from a private chat without providing the full and honest scope of the larger discussion.”

In his statement and in an interview with the Washington Examiner, he stressed that he was not claiming that the majority or entirety of either party are the extremists that he mentioned, nor does he support any group of extremists listed, but that he was referring to fringe groups in both parties. He believes that the left-wing extremists who align with “radical Islam” present a more imminent threat to Jews in America than the right-wing extremists do.

Sinensky said his statement to the Intercept, despite being “demanded” and provided on the Jewish Sabbath, was “largely ignored” in their coverage. As a result, he chose to “clarify and contextualize what I said” in his statement to the Washington Examiner in addition to sharing his entire original statement.

He explained, “The bottom line is that no Jew wants to support people who hate us. Unfortunately, we are currently living in a nation — and world — where antisemitism has exploded on every side of the political spectrum.”

“The awful position we as Jews find ourselves in is to identify the less imminent threat and hedge for our own survival, distasteful as it may be, in the short term,” he added. “That is how dire and serious the situation is.”

The Jewish entrepreneur said that Omar and her anti-Israel colleagues have “actively contributed to the firestorm that has bred” the rise of hate crimes against Jews following Oct. 7. He mentioned two recent examples of anti-Jewish stabbings in New York, as well as an incident caught on video where his wife was chased into his apartment building by a man yelling, “Die, Jews, die!”

“Instead of having empathy for American Jews, whom the country has put in a position to choose the party whose fringe is the lesser enemy, or unpacking their own role in creating such a horrific zeitgeist,” Sinensky said, “This publication chose to weaponize our terror to further vilify us, only further fanning the flames of antisemitism and hate in general.”

“While I am disappointed, I am not surprised, and in fact, this only further illustrates the need for American Jews to organize and act in our own political interests. Our very survival depends on it,” he added.

AIPAC largely absent from ‘most hateful’ Squad member’s primary

Tuesday’s 14-point victory for Omar fell short of the bigger blowout some were expecting after Lake Research Partners, a polling company associated with her campaign, had the incumbent up 27 points before the election.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee ramped up spending in other efforts to oust fellow “Squad” members such as Reps. Cori Bush (D-MO) and Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), but as of Aug. 7, AIPAC had only spent $19,000 in advertising for Omar’s race. This came as a surprise to members of the “Zionists for Don Samuels Against Ilhan Omar” WhatsApp group chat.

On July 24, one member asked, “Is AIPAC helping Don Samuels?”

An activist answered, “Not right now which is why this grassroots effort is very important. Thanks to everyone for your support!”

Through a campaign staffer, Samuels addressed the group on the matter. He assured that AIPAC was “absolutely aware of this race, [and] they have engaged with us on a regular basis.”

On July 25, one member speculated that AIPAC may have been hesitant due to “this myth that Ilhan is unbeatable,” as well as “the real possibility that public involvement by AIPAC would backfire.”

She explained that there is “a lot of latent antisemitism” in Minneapolis, which she noted was once known as the most antisemitic city in the United States. ‘“AIPAC’ is a dog whistle, a stand-in for ‘Jews and their $$ control of the world.’ Ilhan knows this and weaponizes it.”

With AIPAC focused on other races, Sinensky and company stepped up to help defeat Omar, who Samuels has referred to as a “pawn for Hamas” due to her anti-Israel statements and positions.

“Don only lost by less than 2,500 votes or 2% in 2022,” Sinensky told the group on July 28. “We do not need millions from AIPAC. We can win this with $100k in donations from all of us.”

He continued, “We cannot stand by while the leader of the squad — the most hateful one — is vulnerable without a last ditch effort to fire her from American politics.”

On Aug. 8, Sinensky responded to another member inquiring if AIPAC will be supporting Samuels, “They are not, they don’t think their $ can help defeat her. They think it will hurt the grass roots effort that is more strong in this district as proven by the last race.”

He added, “We have collectively raised more than what AIPAC put in last race.”

AIPAC contributed $350,000 to Omar’s opposition in 2022 through the United Democracy Project. However, according to Jewish Insider, AIPAC felt that “Don [Samuels] has reached his capacity” after he lost the 2022 primary against the anti-Israel Democrat.

While AIPAC mostly watched Omar’s 2024 race from the sidelines, Sinensky and his group worked tirelessly to get thousands of Republicans to switch parties to vote for Samuels in addition to raising hundreds of thousands toward the effort to oust Omar.

“In the case of unseating Omar,” Sinensky said they had “a unicorn of an opportunity” in Samuels, who he described as “a candidate who stands for values I (and most Americans) support, who also represents a place in the Democratic Party in which Jews are not excluded from social justice.”

“I will not apologize for exercising my democratic right to support him,” he said.

The media often sensationalizes or mischaracterizes snippets of conversation to support the story they want to tell, and this case was no exception. The outlet took screenshots from a private chat without providing the full and honest scope of the larger discussion. A statement I provided to the outlet prior to publication was largely ignored, despite being demanded on the Jewish Sabbath and being promptly delivered. I am taking this opportunity to clarify and contextualize what I said: The bottom line is that no Jew wants to support people who hate us. Unfortunately, we are currently living in a nation—and world—where antisemitism has exploded on every side of the political spectrum. The awful position we as Jews find ourselves in is to identify the less imminent threat and hedge for our own survival, distasteful as it may be, in the short term. That is how dire and serious the situation is.

Here is our reality living as a Jew today. Not long after the horrors of October 7th, my wife was chased into our apartment building by a man yelling, “Die, Jews, die.” Just this past weekend, two visibly Jewish men, in separate incidents, were stabbed—one by a man yelling, “Free Palestine.” I, and many fellow Jews, believe wholeheartedly that rhetoric perpetuated by Ilhan Omar and ‘The Squad’ has actively contributed to the firestorm that has bred these dangerous hate crimes. I believe this growing brand of Jew hate is an imminent threat to the Jewish people. Of course, I find Nazis abhorrent—almost my entire family was exterminated in the Holocaust—but there is no side on either end of the current political spectrum that is truly safe for Jews. We have been forced into the position of siding with whomever is less unsafe at this particular moment. And that is not “The Squad.”

Even in the published screenshot, I offered the example of Ukraine, where our humanitarian contributions have supported the resistance to Russia’s invasion, despite having to accept the cooperation of the Azov Brigade (and their long-held Neo-Nazi ties) because their resistance is actively protecting Ukrainian Jews right now.

Instead of having empathy for American Jews, whom the country has put in a position to choose the party whose fringe is the lesser enemy, or unpacking their own role in creating such a horrific zeitgeist, this publication chose to weaponize our terror to further vilify us, only further fanning the flames of antisemitism and hate in general. While I am disappointed, I am not surprised, and in fact, this only further illustrates the need for American Jews to organize and act in our own political interests. Our very survival depends on it.

For American Jews who disagree with my assessment, that is entirely their (and nobody else’s) prerogative, and I encourage them to support whichever candidates they believe best ensure our safety, which is exactly what I am doing.

In the case of unseating Omar, we have a unicorn of an opportunity: a candidate who stands for values I (and most Americans) support, who also represents a place in the Democratic Party in which Jews are not excluded from social justice. That unicorn is Don Samuels, and I will not apologize for exercising my democratic right to support him.

Trump blasts Tim Walz over ties to Muslim cleric who shared pro-Hitler film

Former President Donald Trump took aim at Democratic vice presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) on Thursday over the governor’s ties to a Muslim cleric who promoted a pro-Hitler movie.

“He’s praised a Hitler-supporting radical Muslim iman named Asad Zaman, calling him a ‘master teacher,’” Trump said in a speech in New Jersey to Jewish community leaders, citing exclusive reporting from the Washington Examiner.

“He knew him for a long time,” Trump said, referring to Walz’s relationship with Asad Zaman of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota that the Harris campaign has sought to dismiss. “He’s a ‘master teacher.’ If Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are elected, the radical-left flag burners and Hamas sympathizers will not just be causing chaos on our streets. They’ll be running U.S. foreign policy in the White House, and Israel will be gone.”

This week, the Washington Examiner published footage showing that Walz praised the cleric at a 2018 event hosted by his group, the Muslim American Society of Minnesota.

“I am a teacher, so when I see a master teacher, I know it.

DNC scheduling coincidence gifts governor hopeful her dream job for a day

The Democratic National Convention will throw at least one state’s executive branch into disorganization as high-ranking state Democrats flock to Chicago.

It could be of little surprise that the one state, Massachusetts, which has a Democratic trifecta and is a party stronghold, would be heavily affected by the party’s extravaganza.

State Auditor Diana DiZoglio, fifth in the state’s gubernatorial line of succession, will take the reins as acting governor for a day with every Democrat except state Treasurer Deb Goldberg, who is traveling for a wedding, at the DNC.

DiZoglio’s office told the Washington Examiner that “the Governor’s Office informed us this week that Auditor DiZoglio will be serving as Acting Governor next Tuesday, August 20.” It could present an interesting and rare situation for the state as DiZoglio, normally far removed from the governorship, will have the same powers as Healey for a day.

DiZoglio does not lack in state legislative experience. She was a state legislator for 10 years before taking over as the state’s chief accountability officer. Healey only had eight years of experience as an elected official, as attorney general, before taking the governorship.

The 41-year-old has been floated as a potential future governor given her extensive legislative experience. For a day, she could understand what it will be like if she ever takes the position of the state’s top executive.

According to Politico, she could push an issue like Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn did during his stint as the city’s acting mayor, or she could serve as a administrative stopgap. She’s backed a ballot campaign to let her office audit the state legislature, which could be an issue she pushes.

“I think that folks are fed up with not being able to get access to what’s happening up on Beacon Hill, oftentimes finding out about legislation only after it’s passed, and not having the opportunity to weigh in regarding their opinion,” DiZoglio told WAMC.

The one-day promotion appears to be a unique scenario and an insight as to what happens when a major political convention draws a single-party dominated state’s officials away.

If the presidential line of succession underwent a similar scenario, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen would be the acting president. Nine vice presidents have taken the presidential mantle, but no House speakers, the second-in-line position to be president, have ascended to the presidency.

A prominent Republican governor was criticized by Democrats for his recent absence. Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) was on a trip to east Asia when Hurricane Beryl struck in July. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick was active governor and took a major role in the state’s response.

Top five takeaways from Trump press conference at Bedminster

Former President Donald Trump‘s press conference at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey featured a roughly 46-minute monologue with frequent attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris while repeating key topics from the campaign stump.

This is Trump’s second press conference in about a week as he aims to pressure Harris into sitting down for a substantial press interview, which she has so far avoided. Last week’s press conference was held at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The former president claimed Harris is “not smart enough” to face media questioning.

Trump has struggled to adapt to a newly energized Democratic ticket and party after President Joe Biden suspended his campaign last month. The former president, flanked by a table full of food and coffee, blasted Harris as a “radical-left person” who “wants to put price controls all over the place.”

In a surprise moment of kindness toward journalists, Trump praised CNN’s Dana Bash and Jake Tapper for their hosting duties during the June debate against Biden. “I have to say Jake Tapper and Dana Bash were unbelievably straight and honest. I give them a lot of credit for that,” Trump said of the debate where Biden did so poorly he was pressured into bowing out of the race.

Before Trump’s press conference, the Harris campaign mocked the former president in an email with the subject line “Donald Trump To Ramble Incoherently and Spread Dangerous Lies in Public, but at Different Home.”

Citing previous cases where Trump’s preference for incendiary comments overshadowed his message, the campaign warned readers that “Donald Trump intends to deliver another self-obsessed rant full of his own personal grievances to distract from his toxic Project 2025 agenda, unpopular running mate, and increasing detachment from the reality of the voters who will decide this election.”

Here are the Washington Examiner’s five takeaways from the press conference.

Trump tells Israel’s prime minister to end the war

The last time Trump spoke with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was during a 2 1/2 hour meeting at his Mar-a-Lago resort in late July, Trump told reporters Thursday. The assertion rebuts reporting that the two leaders spoke by phone Wednesday about the Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal.

Trump did, however, encourage Netanyahu to hurriedly end the war against Hamas that has claimed the lives of thousands of civilians and led to 115 hostages still in the hands of Hamas.

“He knows what he’s doing. I did encourage him to get this over with,” said Trump. “You want to get it over with. It has to get over with fast but have victory, get your victory, and get it over with. It has to stop. The killing has to stop.”

Officials from the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Israel are in the midst of high-level negotiations in Doha to bring out a deal that would end the fighting between Israel and Hamas.

Trump calls early voting ‘ridiculous’

One day after early voting in Florida, Trump reverted to denouncing the voting strategy even as the GOP is pushing for the base to embrace early voting.

Trump encouraged people who are struggling in credit card debt to vote for his campaign but segued into attacking early voting. “They should on Nov. 5 or sooner, if it’s early voting, which largely it is which is ridiculous, we should have one-day voting paper ballots,” Trump said. “We should have voter ID, and we should have proof of citizenship because people are voting.”

On Wednesday, Trump cast an early vote ballot in Florida as a convicted felon. Trump was convicted of 34 felonies for falsifying business records, but depending on sentencing in New York and other legal cases, his right to vote could be curtailed.

Trump ‘entitled’ to personal attacks against Harris

For weeks, Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), have poked fun at Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), via Generation Z-inflected memes, harsh campaign emails, and media appearances brandishing the GOP as “weird.”

These attacks, according to Trump, allow him to lob criticisms right back at Democrats. “I think I’m entitled to personal attacks,” Trump said when asked about a more disciplined approach.

“I don’t have a lot of respect for her. I don’t have a lot of respect for her intelligence, and I think she’ll be a terrible president, and I think it’s very important that we win,” Trump added. “And whether the personal attacks are good, bad, I mean, she certainly attacks me personally. She actually called me weird. ‘He’s weird.’ It was just a sound bite, and she called J.D. and I weird. He’s not weird. He was a great student at Yale. He went to Ohio State, graduated in two years at the top of his class, and all of these different things.”

The GOP has continued to implore Trump to move away from attacks against Harris’s race and gender and focus more on pocketbook issues, to mixed results.

Trump keeps commenting on Harris’s Time magazine cover

In a Monday interview with Elon Musk on X, Trump claimed that Harris’s Time magazine cover reminded him of his wife and former first lady, Melania. Two days later, Trump brought up the magazine cover again at a rally in Asheville, North Carolina.

“And now they’re putting her on the covers of Time magazine with an artist sketch. They don’t use a picture, they don’t use a picture, they use an artist sketch,” Trump said as the crowd booed. “I want to use that artist. I want to find that artist. I like him very much.”

Thursday marked the third time that Trump publicly referenced the cover. “What was that all about? The whole thing is crazy. I just want to win for the country,” Trump said. “Some people say, ‘Oh, why don’t you be nice?’ But they’re not nice to me.”

Trump’s openness to Nikki Haley

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley recently slammed Trump’s attacks against Harris as “whining” and urged the campaign to focus on the liberal policies that Harris has endorsed and times pivoted away from.

When asked about Haley’s comments, Trump appeared agreeable to his former primary rival joining him on the campaign trail.

“Sure,” Trump said when asked about Haley as a campaign surrogate. “I think that we’ve done very well. I think that we’re hitting a nerve. I think this is a different kind of a race. All we have to do is define our opponent as being a communist or a socialist or somebody that’s going to destroy our country.”

The former president then segued into discussing how he defeated the South Carolina lawmaker in her home state during the primary season.

“I beat her in her own state by legendary numbers, and I get along with her fine. I appreciate that she endorsed me and all of that,” he said. “I think, relatively to what they’re doing and how radical they are and how, in many ways how sick they are. I think I’m doing a very calm campaign.”

Trump has spent several campaign events attacking Harris but also engaging in rambling moments that diluted the impact of his criticisms. “I’m a very calm person, believe it or not. If I wasn’t, probably wouldn’t be around anymore you know,” he emphasized.

But ultimately, while Trump appreciated Haley’s advice, he said, “I have to do it my way.”

Vance (R-OH), via Generation Z-inflected memes, harsh campaign emails, and media appearances brandishing the GOP as “weird.” These attacks, according to Trump, allow him to lob criticisms right back at Democrats. He went to Ohio State, graduated in two years at the top of his class, and all of these different things.” The GOP has continued to implore Trump to move away from attacks against Harris’s race and gender and focus more on pocketbook issues, to mixed results. Trump keeps commenting on Harris’s Time magazine cover In a Monday interview with Elon Musk on X, Trump claimed that Harris’s Time magazine cover reminded him of his wife and former first lady, Melania. I like him very much.” Thursday marked the third time that Trump publicly referenced the cover. “What was that all about? The whole thing is crazy. I just want to win for the country,” Trump said. “Some people say, ‘Oh, why don’t you be nice?’ But they’re not nice to me.” Trump’s openness to Nikki Haley Former U.N. All we have to do is define our opponent as being a communist or a socialist or somebody that’s going to destroy our country.” The former president then segued into discussing how he defeated the South Carolina lawmaker in her home state during the primary season. “I beat her in her own state by legendary numbers, and I get along with her fine. I appreciate that she endorsed me and all of that,” he said. “I think, relatively to what they’re doing and how radical they are and how, in many ways how sick they are. I think I’m doing a very calm campaign.” CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER Trump has spent several campaign events attacking Harris but also engaging in rambling moments that diluted the impact of his criticisms. “I’m a very calm person, believe it or not. If I wasn’t, probably wouldn’t be around anymore you know,” he emphasized. But ultimately, while Trump appreciated Haley’s advice, he said, “I have to do it my way.”, , Top five takeaways from Trump press conference at Bedminster, https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/AP24228751858841.webp, Washington Examiner, Political News and Conservative Analysis About Congress, the President, and the Federal Government, https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/cropped-favicon-32×32.png, https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/feed/, Mabinty Quarshie,

Social Security update: Second round of August payments worth $4,873 to go out in six days thumbnail

Social Security update: Second round of August payments worth $4,873 to go out in six days

The second round of August’s Social Security payments, worth up to $4,873 for the highest-income earners who retire at age 70, will go out to the second group of retirees on Aug. 21.

Here is everything you need to know about this month’s Social Security payments, which go out in three rounds.

What is it?

The Social Security Act was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935. The Social Security Administration was created to manage it. The agency sends monthly checks to retirees to reduce or replace their incomes once they stop working.

When does the check arrive?

Social Security payments typically begin on the second Wednesday of every month, and the following waves go out in the subsequent weeks. The distribution of payments depends on which day of the month a retiree was born.

Retirees born between the 1st and 10th of a month receive their payments on Wednesday. Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th of a month received their checks on Aug. 21, and retirees born on or after the 21st of a month will receive their payments on Aug. 28.

How can I maximize my check?

Beneficiaries receive different amounts depending on when they retire, the amount paid into Social Security, and the number of years paid into Social Security.

Payments largely depend on recipients’ retirement age. According to the SSA, retiring at the youngest age, 62, allows up to $2,710 per month, while delaying retirement until 70 can allot up to $4,873 per month.

Beneficiaries can see a personalized estimate of how much they can expect each month through the SSA’s calculator.

When am I eligible?

Citizens are eligible for Social Security payments beginning at 62 years old.

How is it financed?

Social Security is financed by a payroll tax paid by employers and employees.

Social Security payment amounts are set to shrink unless Congress takes action to prevent it. Analysts estimate the SSA will no longer be able to give out full payments to recipients as early as 2034 due to a rising number of retirees and a shrinking number of workers.

Harris to propose construction of 3 million new homes as part of economic agenda thumbnail

Harris to propose construction of 3 million new homes as part of economic agenda

Vice President Kamala Harris’s housing plan involves pushing for the construction of millions of new homes while incentivizing the construction of homes for first-time buyers.

Harris is set to unveil her economic and affordability plan Friday, but the details of what her economic policy agenda might look like are beginning to emerge. As part of the plan, she will call for the construction of 3 million new housing units over the course of her first term in office, according to Harris campaign officials.

The push for more housing comes amid a bruising housing shortage in the United States that has featured decades of undersupply. Harris’s plan appears to build off President Joe Biden’s previous call for the construction of 2 million new homes.

Harris will also unveil a new tax incentive for builders that will reward them for building homes for first-time homebuyers, although there are little details about that plan as of Thursday evening.

Harris will also pitch a $40 billion fund to help local governments find solutions to housing undersupply. Biden had proposed a $20 billion fund to do the same thing.

During this year’s State of the Union address, Biden proposed providing a $5,000 tax credit for middle-class first-time homebuyers for two years, which he described as a form of mortgage relief. He also pitched a $10,000 credit for those who sell their starter homes.

But critics of that plan contend that doing so would backfire by increasing demand and putting upward pressure on home prices.

Harris is now proposing that families who have paid their rent on time for two years and are first-time homebuyers receive up to $25,000 in down-payment assistance, with more generous support for first-generation homeowners.

Biden has also pushed for Congress to make it so corporate landlords have to cap rent increases on existing units at 5% or lose prized tax breaks, something that Republicans in Congress would certainly not support.

That proposal would apply only to corporate landlords with over 50 units in their portfolios and would cover more than 50 million units across the country, according to the White House.

Also on Thursday, Harris unveiled a plan to target food inflation at the grocery store. As part of it, Harris would try to enact the “first-ever federal ban on corporate price-gouging,” something that critics argue would not work and could lead to food shortages.

Kevin O’Leary argues Harris must ‘distance herself’ from Biden to win election

Shark Tank star and international businessman Kevin O’Leary advised Vice President Kamala Harris on several steps she needs to take to win the 2024 election, including ditching President Joe Biden.

O’Leary wondered if Harris could run a campaign that is more centrist, which could win over voters who do not align with a specific party. He cautioned that if Harris’s strategy is simply to “bash big pharma” and “big business,” it would make her appear as “a leftist,” as she has throughout her vice presidency and make a loss more likely.

“So my prediction is, and we’ll know more next week after the convention, she has to get rid of Biden,” O’Leary said on Fox News’s The Story with Martha MacCallum. “I understand the heritage thing and everything, but she’s got to distance herself from Bidenomics, that is radioactive waste for voters! So, if she doesn’t bring some daylight in and go to the center, she’ll just lose, and I’m sure she knows that. That’s free fodder for Trump. And I’m not trying to diss Biden or be partisan, but that’s a losing strategy.”

O’Leary also stressed the need for Harris to establish her policies and how she plans to address the topics that voters face, including taxes, border security, and energy. He also argued that Harris must demonstrate she can discuss her policies without a teleprompter, as being able to conduct interviews and defend her policies live is very important.

“Has she learned anything about how to deal with it in a one-on-one basis?” O’Leary said. “That’s going to be where the tire hits the road.”

Virginia schools receive guidance for cellphone-free classrooms thumbnail

Virginia schools receive guidance for cellphone-free classrooms

The Virginia Department of Education released draft guidance Thursday afternoon for school districts to implement measures to remove cellphones from “bell to bell” in classrooms.

The guidance comes after Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) signed an executive order directing the department to find ways for schools to achieve a “cellphone-free education.”

“This draft guidance is the result of Virginians coming together and saying, ‘enough.’ Virginia parents and teachers have witnessed first-hand the damage cellphones in schools has had on our youth’s academic, mental and physical health and social development,” Commonwealth Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera said. “Communities are committed to implementing common sense approaches to restore vibrant and healthy learning environments for all our children throughout the Commonwealth. The Youngkin administration stands ready to support public schools, families, and communities as we change the culture around cellphones.”

The goal of the guidance is for students to have their cellphones off and stored away from “bell to bell,” meaning from the moment the first class bell rings in the morning to the last bell in the afternoon.

The guidance also varies for different age groups. If parents determine that elementary children should bring a cellphone to school, the device must be off and stored away all day and should not be used in the school building or on campus before or after school.

Middle school students should not have their device “easily accessible” during the school day, and the guidance leaves it up to individual school districts to determine cellphone use policies in the school building and on campus both before and after school.

High school students have a similar requirement during the school day, but they are permitted to use the devices in the school building and on campus before and after school.

The guidance makes exceptions for students who have certain medical needs.

While removing cellphones from class time is relatively popular among most parents, one of the major sticking points for some parents who are skeptical of such policies is being able to contact their child in the case of an emergency.

The guidance requires school districts to create family contact plans for both school emergencies and family emergencies.

The guidance is not final and is open for feedback for the next 30 days. Final guidance will be issued Sept. 16.

Marco Rubio compares Kamala Harris to Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) compared Vice President Kamala Harris to former Cuban President Fidel Castro and former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez after she announced her plans to implement the first-ever federal ban on “corporate price-gouging” in grocery stores and the food industry.

The policy proposal, announced on Wednesday, is one of the most progressive economic policies suggested by Harris so far, leading to harsh criticism from Republicans, who drew parallels with socialist governments.

“Kamala wants to bring to America the policies of leaders and countries millions of people have fled #PriceControls,” Rubio posted on X with a picture of Chavez and Castro.

Trump echoed Rubio’s sentiment in a Thursday press conference, saying Harris was trying to implement “communist price controls,” which would cause food shortages.

“She’s running on the Maduro plan,” he continued, referring to the current president of Venezuela. “Like something straight out of Venezuela or the Soviet Union.”

Nicolás Maduro is the president of Venezuela and a member of the United Socialist Party. Price controls were first implemented in 2003 and expanded under Maduro in 2014. The practice is related to socialism since it is the political theory that promotes government control of the means of production.

In a statement, the Harris campaign said the vice president would implement “the first-ever federal ban on price gouging on food and groceries — setting clear rules of the road to make clear that big corporations can’t unfairly exploit consumers to run up excessive corporate profits on food and groceries.”

The price of groceries as of June was up 1.1% from June 2023. In all of 2023, food prices were up 5.8%.
