Schumer praises MTG move to support Obamacare tax credits in floor speech

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was “absolutely right” after she signaled support for extending Obamacare tax credits.

Greene supported extending Obamacare subsidies in a post on X on Tuesday morning, bucking her own party’s position that the debate should not be a part of shutdown negotiations. Schumer praised Greene’s X post, reading it aloud on the Senate floor Tuesday morning.

“Hold on to your hat,” Schumer said. “I think this is the first time I’ve said this, but on this issue, Rep. Greene said it perfectly. Rep. Greene is absolutely right.”

After calling Greene “one of the hardest-right MAGA loyalists,” Schumer quoted a portion of Greene’s statement in which she discussed how her own children’s insurance premiums will double in 2026.

“I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district,” Greene wrote. “I’m absolutely disgusted that health insurance premiums will DOUBLE if the tax credits expire this year.”

Schumer used Greene’s stance to pressure House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) as the shutdown entered its seventh day. Johnson has repeatedly claimed that Republicans have put forward a clean continuing resolution and blamed Democrats for not voting it through like they did in March.

Schumer said Johnson has a divided caucus between Republicans who share his stance and those who share Greene’s.

“There’s also a growing number of House Republicans who realize something needs to be done to fix this mess,” Schumer said. “If the speaker doesn’t relent and these credits expire, people will go bankrupt.”

Johnson rebuked Greene’s comments during a press conference on Tuesday.

“Congresswoman Greene does not serve on the committees of jurisdiction that deal with those specialized issues, and she’s probably not read in on some of that because they’ve still been sort of in their silos of the people who specialize in those issues,” Johnson said to reporters. “When we get the conference back, and when everybody’s back together, we’ll go through a lot of that.”
