Fighter jets were scrambled Sunday after four unidentified aircraft entered restricted airspace over a naval base where President Donald Trump was attending a ceremony marking the Navy’s 250th anniversary.
The president and First Lady Melania Trump were at the Titans of the Sea: A Salute to the Fleet event at Naval Station Norfolk, joined by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Navy John Phelan.
The ceremony began at 8:34 a.m., and about three hours later, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) detected the first airspace violation. Fighter jets were launched immediately to intercept the aircraft.
NORAD said the jets deployed flares to signal the pilot and escorted the plane until it landed safely. Within hours, three more civilian planes breached the restricted area, prompting additional fighter responses throughout the day.
A temporary flight restriction had been established specifically for the event, supplementing Norfolk’s normally restricted airspace, which is enforced more broadly during major military or presidential appearances.
“The identification and monitoring of the civilian aircraft demonstrate how NORAD executes its aerospace warning and control missions for the U.S. and Canada,” the command said in a statement. “General aviation pilots are reminded to verify all FAA Notices to Airmen.”
The first violation occurred around 11:55 a.m. Eastern Time, followed by another roughly 30 minutes later. Two additional incursions occurred later in the afternoon, at 4:15 p.m. and 4:46 p.m., officials stated. Each aircraft was safely escorted out of the restricted zone.
President Trump did not publicly address the airspace incidents during the event. Instead, he delivered remarks honoring service members and later energized the crowd with his signature YMCA dance, drawing cheers and laughter from Navy officers.

The president also took aim at his predecessors, referencing former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, while recalling comments from Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), his former White House physician, who once declared Trump the “healthiest” of the three men.
“A man that everybody loves — he was my doctor in the White House,” Trump told the crowd. “He was also the doctor for Barack Hussein Obama. Have you heard of him? He was a doctor for a man named Bush. And at a press conference, they asked him, ‘Who’s in the best shape?’ He said, ‘That’s easy. President Donald Trump!’ And I said, ‘I love this guy!’”
Trump’s lively appearance comes amid renewed speculation about his health after he was out of public view for several days last week. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the 79-year-old president suffers from chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in older adults that increases the risk of blood clots.
Still, Trump brushed off any doubts, telling supporters he remains in top form. Navy officers responded with loud applause as the president closed his remarks, waving to the crowd and flashing his familiar grin.
